¹² Now therefore, please swear to me by the LORD, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a true token;

³ I will make you swear by the God of heaven and earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.

⁹ The servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.

¹³ The blood shall be to you for a token on the houses where you are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and there shall no plague be on you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

¹³ and that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death."

¹⁸ Look, when we come into the land, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which you did let us down by. You shall gather to yourself into the house your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father's household.

¹⁵ Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The leaders of the congregation swore to them.

¹⁸ The children of Israel did not strike them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation murmured against the leaders. ¹⁹ But all the leaders said to all the congregation, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel; and now therefore we may not touch them. ²⁰ This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them."

¹⁴ And if I am still alive, deal loyally with me. But if I die, ¹⁵ do not cut off your loyalty from my house forever. And when the LORD cuts off the enemies of David, each one from the face of the earth, ¹⁶ if the name of Jonathan be cut off from the house of David, then may the LORD require it at the hand of the enemies of David." ¹⁷ And Jonathan swore to David again, because he loved him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

²¹ Swear now therefore to me by the LORD, that you will not cut off my descendants after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father's house." ²² David swore to Saul. Saul went home; but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

¹⁵ David said to him, "Will you bring me down to this troop?" He said, "Swear to me by God that you will neither kill me, nor deliver me up into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this troop." And he swore to him.

¹³ He also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD, the God of Israel.

⁶ For how can I endure to see the disaster that would come to my people? How can I endure to see the destruction of my relatives?"

¹⁶ It shall happen, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, "As the LORD lives;" even as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built up in the midst of my people.

Then they began at the old men that were before the house.

⁴⁴ Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I will kiss, that is he. Seize him, and lead him away safely."

³¹ foolish, promise-breakers, heartless, unforgiving, unmerciful;

⁸ But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.

¹⁶ May the Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain, ¹⁷ but when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently, and found me ¹⁸ (the Lord grant to him to find the Lord's mercy in that day); and in how many things he served at Ephesus, you know very well.

¹³ For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
