Moses the servant of the LORD gave it for a possession to the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. ⁷ These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the children of Israel struck beyond the Jordan westward, from Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon even to Mount Halak, that goes up to Seir. ¹³ From there they traveled, and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that comes out of the border of the Amorites: for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

²⁴ Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the people of Ammon; for the border of the people of Ammon was strong.

²⁴ "Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the Valley of the Arnon: look, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

⁸ We took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon. ⁹ (The Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir.)

⁴⁸ from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, even to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon),

⁴ Now the LORD your God has given rest to your brothers, as he spoke to them. Therefore now return and go to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan.

³ like the dew of Hermon, that comes down on the hills of Zion: for there the LORD gives the blessing, even life forevermore.

² For it will be that as wandering birds, as a scattered nest, so will the daughters of Moab be at the fords of the Arnon.

²² He got up that night and took his two wives, and his two female servants, and his eleven sons and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok.

²³ Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel. ²⁴ Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the people of Ammon; for the border of the people of Ammon was strong. ²⁵ Israel took all these cities: and Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its towns. ²⁶ For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even to the Arnon. ²⁷ Therefore those who speak in proverbs say, "Come to Heshbon. Let the city of Sihon be built and established; ²⁸ for a fire has gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon. It has devoured Ar of Moab, swallowed up the high places of the Arnon. ²⁹ Woe to you, Moab. You are undone, people of Chemosh. He has given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, to Sihon king of the Amorites. ³⁰ And we shot at them. Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon. And we have laid waste as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba."

²⁴ "Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the Valley of the Arnon: look, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle. ²⁵ This day will I begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole sky, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of you." ²⁶ I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, ²⁷ "Let me pass through your land: I will go along by the highway, I will turn neither to the right hand nor to the left. ²⁸ You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only let me pass through on my feet, ²⁹ as the people of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me; until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which the LORD our God gives us." ³⁰ But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for the LORD your God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as at this day. ³¹ The LORD said to me, "Look, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before you: begin to possess, that you may inherit his land." ³² Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. ³³ The LORD our God delivered him up before us; and we struck him, and his sons, and all his people. ³⁴ We took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones; we left none remaining: ³⁵ only the livestock we took for a prey to ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we had taken. ³⁶ From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the valley, even to Gilead, there was not a city too high for us; the LORD our God delivered up all before us: ³⁷ only to the land of the people of Ammon you did not come near; all the side of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the LORD our God forbade us.

All the region of Argob, with all Bashan, was called the land of Rephaim. ¹⁴ Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, to the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called them, even Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth Jair, to this day.) ¹⁵ I gave Gilead to Makir. ¹⁶ To the Reubenites and to the Gadites I gave from Gilead to the Valley of the Arnon, the middle of the valley, and its border, even to the river Jabbok, which is the border of the people of Ammon; ¹⁷ the Arabah also, and the Jordan and its border, from Kinnereth even to the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah eastward.

¹³ And the king of the people of Ammon answered the messengers of Jephthah, "Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan. Now therefore restore it peaceably, and I will depart."

²² They possessed all the territory of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.

²² Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you allotted according to their portions. So they possessed the land of Sihon king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

¹¹ Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan,

¹⁹ Sihon king of the Amorites; for his loving kindness endures forever; ²⁰ Og king of Bashan; for his loving kindness endures forever;

³ All these joined together in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).

²⁵ He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew on the ground.

²⁰ and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks down on the desert.

¹⁷ the Arabah also, and the Jordan and its border, from Kinnereth even to the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah eastward.

⁴⁹ and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even to the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

¹⁶ that the waters which came down from above stood, and rose up in one heap, a great way off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those that went down toward the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, were wholly cut off. Then the people passed over right against Jericho.

² and to the kings who were on the north, in the hill country, in the Arabah south of Kinnereth, in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west,

³³ They turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. ³⁴ The LORD said to Moses, "Do not fear him: for I have delivered him into your hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon." ³⁵ So they struck him, and his sons and all his people, until there was none left him remaining: and they possessed his land.

⁴ after he had struck Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei.

¹ Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. ² The LORD said to me, "Do not fear him; for I have delivered him, and all his people, and his land, into your hand; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon." ³ So the LORD our God delivered into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we struck him until none was left to him remaining. ⁴ We took all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them; sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. ⁵ All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars; besides the unwalled towns a great many. ⁶ We utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones. ⁷ But all the livestock, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.

³⁷ But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day.

⁸ For your servant vowed a vow while I stayed at Geshur in Aram, saying, 'If the LORD will bring me back to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD in Hebron.'"

³⁴ Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai the Maacathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,

²³ Now when all the captains of the forces, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

²⁹ Moses said to them, "If the people of Gad and the people of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every man who is armed to battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you; then you are to give them the land of Gilead for a possession.

³³ Moses gave to them, even to the people of Gad, and to the people of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to its cities and borders, even the cities of the surrounding land.

⁸ But to the two tribes and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, with him the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them: ⁹ from Aroer, that is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba to Dibon; ¹⁰ and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to the border of the people of Ammon; ¹¹ and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salecah; ¹² all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (the same was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); for Moses attacked these, and drove them out. ¹³ Nevertheless the children of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites, nor the Maacathites: but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day. ¹⁴ Only he gave no inheritance to the tribe of Levi. The offerings of the LORD, the God of Israel, made by fire are his inheritance, as he spoke to him. ¹⁵ Moses gave to the tribe of the descendants of Reuben according to their families. ¹⁶ Their border was from Aroer, that is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain by Medeba; ¹⁷ Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the plain; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, ¹⁸ Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, ¹⁹ Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth Shahar in the mount of the valley, ²⁰ Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, Beth Jeshimoth, ²¹ all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. ²² The children of Israel also killed Balaam, the son of Beor, the soothsayer, with the sword, among the rest of their slain. ²³ The border of the descendants of Reuben was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the descendants of Reuben according to their families, the cities and its villages. ²⁴ Moses gave to the tribe of Gad, to the descendants of Gad, according to their families. ²⁵ Their border was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the people of Ammon, to Aroer that is before Rabbah; ²⁶ and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir; ²⁷ and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan's bank, to the uttermost part of the sea of Kinnereth beyond the Jordan eastward. ²⁸ This is the inheritance of the descendants of Gad according to their families, the cities and its villages. ²⁹ Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was for the half-tribe of the descendants of Manasseh according to their families. ³⁰ Their border was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities. ³¹ Half Gilead, Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the descendants of Makir the son of Manasseh, even for the half of the descendants of Makir according to their families. ³² These are the inheritances which Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho, eastward.

²⁹ I confer on you a kingdom, even as my Father conferred on me, ³⁰ that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel." ³¹ And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon, look, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat, ³² but I prayed for you, that your faith would not fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers." ³³ He said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death." ³⁴ He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will by no means crow today until you deny that you know me three times." ³⁵ He said to them, "When I sent you out without money bag, and pack, and shoes, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing." ³⁶ Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a money bag must take it, and likewise a pack. Whoever has none, must sell his cloak, and buy a sword. ³⁷ For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: 'And he was numbered with transgressors.' For that which concerns me has an end." ³⁸ They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." He said to them, "That is enough." ³⁹ He came out, and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him. ⁴⁰ When he was at the place, he said to them, "Pray that you do not enter into temptation." ⁴¹ He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and he knelt down and prayed, ⁴² saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."

⁶ and the Horite, in the hills of Seir, to El Paran, which is near the desert.

³ Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the region of Edom.

⁸ And Esau (also known as Edom) settled in the hill country of Seir.

²⁰ These are the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah,

³⁰ chief Dishon, chief Ezer, and chief Dishan: these are the chiefs who came of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir.

¹ Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Lake of Rushes, as the LORD spoke to me; and we encircled Mount Seir many days.

⁴ Command the people, saying, 'You are to pass through the border of your brothers the descendants of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you: take good heed to yourselves therefore;

²³ then will the LORD drive out all these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves. ²⁴ Every place whereon the sole of your foot shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness, and Lebanon, from the river, the river Perath, even to the western sea shall be your border.

³ I have given you every place that the sole of your foot will tread on, as I told Moses. ⁴ From the wilderness, and this Lebanon, even to the great river, the river Perath, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border.

¹⁷ The priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan; and all Israel passed over on dry ground, until all the nation had passed completely over the Jordan.

¹ It happened, when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the Great Sea in front of Lebanon, the Hethite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it

²³ So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD spoke to Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. The land had rest from war.

The LORD said to him, "You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed. ² This is the land that still remains: all the regions of the Philistines, and all the Geshurites; ³ from the Shihor, which is before Egypt, even to the border of Ekron northward, which is counted as Canaanite; the five lords of the Philistines; the Gazites, and the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avvim, ⁴ on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, and from Arah that belongs to the Sidonians to Aphek, to the border of the Amorites; ⁵ and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal Gad under Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath; ⁶ all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim, even all the Sidonians; them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only you allocate it to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. ⁷ Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh: from the Jordan as far as the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun, you are to give it; the Great Sea will be the boundary. ⁸ But to the two tribes and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, with him the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them: ⁹ from Aroer, that is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba to Dibon; ¹⁰ and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to the border of the people of Ammon; ¹¹ and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salecah; ¹² all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (the same was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); for Moses attacked these, and drove them out. ¹³ Nevertheless the children of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites, nor the Maacathites: but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day. ¹⁴ Only he gave no inheritance to the tribe of Levi. The offerings of the LORD, the God of Israel, made by fire are his inheritance, as he spoke to him. ¹⁵ Moses gave to the tribe of the descendants of Reuben according to their families. ¹⁶ Their border was from Aroer, that is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain by Medeba; ¹⁷ Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the plain; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, ¹⁸ Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, ¹⁹ Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth Shahar in the mount of the valley,

¹⁸ On that day God made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Perath: ¹⁹ the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, ²⁰ the Hethites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, ²¹ the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hivites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."

⁸ I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanites, and the Hethites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

²³ For my angel shall go before you, and bring you in to the Amorite, the Hethite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I will cut them off.

²⁸ I will send the hornet before you, which will drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hethite, from before you. ²⁹ I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land become desolate, and the animals of the field multiply against you. ³⁰ Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you have increased and inherit the land. ³¹ I will set your border from the Sea at the End even to the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the River; for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out before you.

¹ When the LORD your God shall bring you into the land where you go to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before you, the Hethite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you;

¹ Hear, Israel: you are to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to the sky,

⁴⁰ So Joshua struck all the land, the hill country, and the Negev, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded.

¹⁶ So Joshua captured all that land, the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, the Arabah, the hill country of Israel, and the lowland of the same;

² The LORD said to Joshua, "Look, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty men of valor. ³ All your men of war shall march around the city, going around the city once. You shall do this six days. ⁴ Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark. On the seventh day, you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. ⁵ It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him." ⁶ Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, "Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD." ⁷ And he said to the people, "Advance. March around the city, and let the armed men pass on before the LORD's ark." ⁸ It was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the LORD advanced, and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them. ⁹ The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the ark went after them. The trumpets sounded as they went. ¹⁰ Joshua commanded the people, saying, "You shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout." ¹¹ So he caused the ark of the LORD to go around the city, going about it once. Then they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp. ¹² Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. ¹³ The seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them. The rear guard came after the ark of the LORD. The trumpets sounded as they went. ¹⁴ The second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. They did this six days. ¹⁵ It happened on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and marched around the city in the same way seven times. Only on this day they marched around the city seven times. ¹⁶ It happened at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, "Shout, for the LORD has given you the city. ¹⁷ The city shall be devoted, even it and all that is in it, to the LORD. Only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent. ¹⁸ But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, so as not to covet and take of the devoted thing and make the camp of Israel accursed, and bring trouble on it. ¹⁹ But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, are holy to the LORD. They shall come into the LORD's treasury." ²⁰ So the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets. It happened, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. ²¹ They utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

¹ The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid, neither be dismayed. Take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Look, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land.

¹⁷ There was not a man left in Ai or Beth El who did not go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.

²⁹ He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until the evening, and at the sundown Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised a great heap of stones on it that remains to this day. ³⁰ Then Joshua built an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal, ³¹ as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, "an altar of uncut stones, on which no man has touched with an iron tool." They offered burnt offerings on it to the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings. ³² He wrote there on the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel. ³³ All Israel, and their elders and officers, and their judges, stood on this side of the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, who carried the ark of the LORD's covenant, the foreigner as well as the native; half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded at the first, that they should bless the children of Israel. ³⁴ Afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law. ³⁵ There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.

³ Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,

²³ They did so, and brought those five kings out of the cave to him: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

³⁶ Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to Hebron; and they fought against it. ³⁷ They took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with its king and all its cities, and all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls who were in it.

³ Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, ⁴ "Come up to me, and help me, and let us strike Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel." ⁵ Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their armies, and camped against Gibeon, and made war against it. ⁶ The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, "Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill country have gathered together against us." ⁷ So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. ⁸ The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands. Not a man of them will stand before you." ⁹ Joshua therefore came on them suddenly. He went up from Gilgal all night. ¹⁰ The LORD confused them before Israel, and he killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth Horon, and struck them to Azekah and to Makkedah. ¹¹ And it happened, as they fled from before the children of Israel while they were at the descent of Beth Horon, that the LORD cast down stones from the sky on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than who the children of Israel killed with the sword. ¹² Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites into the hand of Israel, when he struck them down at Gibeon, and they were struck down before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still on Gibeon. You, moon, stop in the Valley of Aijalon." ¹³ The sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Isn't this written in the book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the midst of the sky, and did not hurry to go down about a whole day. ¹⁴ There was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD listened to the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel. ¹⁵ Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal. ¹⁶ These five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. ¹⁷ Joshua was told, saying, "The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah." ¹⁸ Joshua said, "Roll large stones to the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them; ¹⁹ but do not stay. Pursue your enemies, and attack them from the rear. Do not allow them to enter into their cities; for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hand." ²⁰ It happened, when Joshua and the children of Israel had finished killing them with a very great slaughter until they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, ²¹ that all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace. None moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel. ²² Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out of the cave to me." ²³ They did so, and brought those five kings out of the cave to him: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

³¹ Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and camped against it, and fought against it. ³² The LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel. He took it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with all the souls who were in it, according to all that he had done to Libnah. ³³ Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

³⁹ Lachish, and Bozkath, and Eglon,

³⁸ Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it.

³⁶ and Shaaraim, and Adithaim, and Gederah, and its sheepfolds; fourteen cities with their villages.

⁴⁵ Then the Amalekite came down, and the Canaanite who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down, even to Hormah.

¹ When the Canaanite king of Arad who lived in the Negev heard that Israel came by the way of Atharim, then he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.

³ The LORD listened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and the name of the place was called Hormah.

²⁹ Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah. ³⁰ The LORD delivered it also, with its king, into the hand of Israel. He struck it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining in it. He did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.

¹ David therefore departed there, and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him.

⁸ He left from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar and called on the name of God.

¹⁹ He called the name of that place Bethel, though previously the city was named Luz.

²⁸ Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with its king. He utterly destroyed them and all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining. He did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.

²² And the house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them.

³⁴ and Zanoah, and En Gannim, Tappuah, and Enam,

¹³ From there it passed along eastward to Gath Hepher, to Eth Kazin; and it went out to Rimmon which bends toward Neah.

¹⁰ Ben Hesed, in Arubboth (to him belonged Socoh, and all the land of Hepher);

⁴ on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, and from Arah that belongs to the Sidonians to Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;

³⁰ and Acco, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty-two cities with their villages.

¹ And Samuel's words came to all Israel. And Eli grew very old, and his sons kept advancing in their wicked behavior before the LORD. And it came to pass in those days that the Philistines gathered themselves together against Israel. And Israel went out to meet them in battle, and camped beside Ebenezer, and the Philistines camped in Aphek.

⁹ The land mourns and languishes. Lebanon is confounded and withers away. Sharon is like a desert, and Bashan and Carmel are stripped bare.

¹ It happened, when Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, that he sent to Jobab king of Maron, to the king of Shim'on, to the king of Achshaph,

¹⁰ Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and struck its king with the sword: for Hazor used to be the head of all those kingdoms. ¹¹ They struck all the souls who were in it with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them. There was no one left who breathed. He burnt Hazor with fire.

² The LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth Haggoyim.

¹⁵ Kattath, Nahalal, Shim'on, Idalah, and Bethlehem: twelve cities with their villages.

²⁵ Their border was from Helkath (and Hali, and Beten, and Achshaph,

¹¹ And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher, Beth Shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; three regions.

¹⁹ The kings came and fought, then the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of Megiddo. They took no plunder of silver.

¹² Baana the son of Ahilud, in Taanach and Megiddo, and all Beth Shean which is beside Zarethan, beneath Jezreel, from Beth Shean to Abel Meholah, as far as beyond Jokmeam;

²⁹ In his days Pharaoh Necoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Perath: and king Josiah went against him; and Pharaoh Necoh killed him at Megiddo, when he had seen him. ³⁰ His servants carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo, and brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb. The people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made him king in his father's place.

²³ and Kedesh, and Hazor Ithnan,

⁵⁵ Maon, Carmel, and Ziph, and Juttah,

¹¹ Their border went up westward, and to Maralah, and reached to Dabbesheth, and it reached to the wadi that is before Jokneam.

³⁷ Kedesh, Edrei, En Hazor,

⁷ They set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.

³² Out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, Hammothdor with its suburbs, and Kartan with its suburbs; three cities.

² There was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

² It will blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing. Lebanon's glory Lebanon will be given to it, the excellence of Carmel and Sharon. They will see the LORD's glory, the excellence of our God.

¹ It happened in the days of Amraphel, king of Shinar, Arioch, king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer, king of Elam, and Tidal, king of Goiim, ² that they made war with Bera, king of Sodom, and with Birsha, king of Gomorrah, Shinab, king of Admah, and Shemeber, king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).

¹⁹ The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and camped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho.

⁹ And the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the disgrace of Egypt from off you." Therefore the name of that place was called Gilgal, to this day. ¹⁰ The children of Israel camped in Gilgal. They kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

¹ But there shall be no more gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time, he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the latter time he has made it glorious, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

²⁴ He will deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name to perish from under the sky: no man shall be able to stand before you, until you have destroyed them.

²³ In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri began to reign over Israel for twelve years. He reigned six years in Tirzah.

¹⁴ Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah, and came to Samaria, and struck Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria, and killed him, and reigned in his place.
