⁵ "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: 'Like these good figs, so will I regard the captives of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans, for good.

¹⁶ who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know; that he might humble you, and that he might prove you, to do you good at your latter end:

¹² Blessed is the man whom you discipline, LORD, and teach out of your Law; ¹³ that you may give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit is dug for the wicked. ¹⁴ For the LORD won't reject his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

⁶⁷ Before I was afflicted, I went astray; but now I observe your word.

⁷¹ It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn your statutes.

⁷ The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows those who take refuge in him.

⁹ I will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say, 'It is my people;' and they will say, 'The LORD is my God.'"

¹² But he answered, 'Truly I tell you, I do not know you.'

²⁷ As I said to you, my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

²⁸ And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

³ But if anyone loves God, the same is known by him.

⁹ But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, why do you turn back again to the weak and miserable elemental principles, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again?

¹⁹ However God's firm foundation stands, having this seal, "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness."

⁵ and you have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with children, "My son, do not take lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose heart when you are corrected by him. ⁶ For whom the Lord loves he disciplines, and punishes every son he accepts." ⁷ If you are enduring discipline, God is dealing with you as children. For what child is there whom his father does not discipline? ⁸ But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not children. ⁹ Furthermore, we had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we paid them respect. Should we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed, for a few days, disciplined us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. Be zealous therefore, and repent.
