¹⁷ For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire.

¹² Who can discern his errors? Forgive me from hidden errors. ¹³ Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins. Let them not have dominion over me. Then I will be upright. I will be blameless and innocent of great transgression.

¹ [For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.] Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. ² Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin. ³ For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me. ⁴ Against you, and you only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight; that you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge. ⁵ Look, I was brought forth in iniquity. In sin my mother conceived me.

¹⁰ Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. ¹¹ Do not throw me from your presence, and do not take your holy Spirit from me. ¹² Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Uphold me with a willing spirit.

³ Sins overwhelmed me, but you atoned for our transgressions.

⁴ You have commanded your precepts, that we should fully obey them. ⁵ Oh that my ways were steadfast to obey your statutes. ⁶ Then I wouldn't be disappointed, when I consider all of your commandments.

²⁰ My soul is consumed with longing for your ordinances at all times.

²⁴ Indeed your statutes are my delight, and my counselors. ²⁵ DALET. My soul is laid low in the dust. Revive me according to your word.

³² I run in the path of your commandments, for you have set my heart free.

³⁵ Direct me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in them.

⁴⁰ Look, I long for your precepts. Revive me in your righteousness.

¹³³ Establish my footsteps in your word. Do not let any iniquity have dominion over me.

¹⁵⁹ Consider how I love your precepts. Revive me, LORD, according to your loving kindness.

⁶ Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled.

³⁰ "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters.

¹⁷ And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

²³ But he turned, and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan. You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of humans."

³³ He said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death."

⁵⁴ They seized him, and led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter followed from a distance. ⁵⁵ When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard, and had sat down together, Peter sat among them. ⁵⁶ A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him." ⁵⁷ But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know him." ⁵⁸ After a little while someone else saw him, and said, "You also are one of them." But Peter answered, "Man, I am not." ⁵⁹ After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean." ⁶⁰ But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. ⁶¹ The Lord turned, and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord's word, how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows today you will deny me three times."

⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

⁷ What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not. However, I would not have known sin, except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness, unless the law had said, "Do not covet." ⁸ But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin is dead.

¹⁰ The commandment, which was for life, this I found to be for death; ¹¹ for sin, taking the opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me. ¹² Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good. ¹³ Did that which is good, then, become death to me? Absolutely not. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful. ¹⁴ For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin. ¹⁵ For I do not know what I am doing. For I do not practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do. ¹⁶ But if I do what I do not want to do, I agree with the law that it is good. ¹⁷ So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me. ¹⁸ For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For the desire is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. ¹⁹ For the good which I desire, I do not do; but the evil which I do not desire, that I practice. ²⁰ But if what I do not desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me. ²¹ I find then the law, that, to me, while I desire to do good, evil is present. ²² For I delight in God's law in my inner being, ²³ but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. ²⁴ What a wretched man I am. Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? ²⁵ Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So then with the mind, I myself serve God's law, but with the flesh, the sin's law.

⁵ For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. ⁶ For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace; ⁷ because the mind set on the flesh is hostile towards God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. ⁸ And those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

¹³ For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

²¹ Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not. For if there had been a law given which could give life, most certainly righteousness would have been of the law.

¹² Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect; but I press on, if it is so that I may take hold of that for which also I was taken hold of by Christ Jesus. ¹³ Brothers, I do not regard myself as having taken hold of it, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and reaching forward to the things which are ahead, ¹⁴ I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, think this way. If in anything you think otherwise, God will also reveal that to you. ¹⁶ Nevertheless, to what we have attained, let us walk by the same rule, being of the same mind.

² For in many things we all stumble. If anyone does not stumble in word, this one is a perfect person, able to bridle the whole body also.

⁵ Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit which he made to dwell in us yearns jealously"? ⁶ But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
