⁵ He commanded them, saying, "This is the thing that you shall do: a third part of you, who come in on the Sabbath, shall be keepers of the watch of the king's house;

⁵ and the food of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their clothing, and his cup bearers, and his burnt offerings which he presented at the house of the LORD; it left her breathless.

¹⁹ He took the captains over hundreds, and the Carites, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the Gate of the Guard to the king's house. He sat on the throne of the kings.

¹⁸ The covered way for the Sabbath that they had built in the house, and the king's entry outside, turned he to the house of the LORD, because of the king of Assyria.

²⁵ Their brothers, in their villages, were to come in every seven days from time to time to be with them:

³ The Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty-eight thousand. ⁴ David said, "Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of the LORD; six thousand were officers and judges; ⁵ four thousand were doorkeepers; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, for giving praise." ⁶ David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

³² and that they should keep the duty of the Tent of Meeting, and the duty of the holy place, and the duty of the sons of Aaron their brothers, for the service of the house of the LORD.

³ David with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to their ordering in their service. ⁴ There were more chief men found among the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; so they were divided like this: of the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen heads according to their ancestral houses, and eight according to their ancestral houses among the sons of Ithamar. ⁵ And thus were they divided impartially by drawing lots; for there were officiers of the sanctuary, and officiers of God, both of the descendants of Eleazar, and of the descendants of Ithamar. ⁶ And Shemaiah the son of Nethanel the scribe, who was of the Levites, wrote them in the presence of the king, and the officiers, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the ancestral houses of the priests and of the Levites; one fathers' house being taken for Eleazar and one being taken for Ithamar.

¹⁰ When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king's house to the house of the LORD; and they sat in the entry of the New Gate of the LORD's house.

² The LORD said to me, "This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, neither shall any man enter in by it; for the LORD, the God of Israel, has entered in by it; therefore it shall be shut. ³ As for the prince, he shall sit in it as prince to eat bread before the LORD; he shall enter by the way of the porch of the gate, and shall go out by the way of the same."

² The prince shall enter by the way of the porch of the gate outside, and shall stand by the post of the gate; and the priests shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at the threshold of the gate: then he shall go forth; but the gate shall not be shut until the evening. ³ The people of the land shall worship at the door of that gate before the LORD on the Sabbaths and on the new moons.

⁸ Now it happened, while he was performing the priest's office before God in the order of his division, ⁹ according to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
