And the sons of Imna: ³⁷ Bezer, and Hod, and Shamma, and Shilshah, and Jether, and Beera. ³⁸ The sons of Jether: Jephunneh, and Pispa, and Ara. ³⁹ The sons of Ulla: Arah, and Hanniel, and Rizia. ⁴⁰ All these were the people of Asher, heads of ancestral houses, choice and mighty men of valor, chief of the princes. The number of them reckoned by genealogy for service in war was twenty-six thousand men.

²³ The descendants of Issachar after their families: of Tola, the family of the Tolaites; of Puah, the family of the Puites; ²⁴ of Jashub, the family of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the family of the Shimronites.

¹ Again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, "Go, number Israel and Judah." ² The king said to Joab and the captains of the army, who were with him, "Now go back and forth through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number the people, that I may know the sum of the people." ³ Joab said to the king, "Now may the LORD your God add to the people, however many they may be, one hundred times; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king delight in this thing?" ⁴ Notwithstanding, the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the army. Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king, to number the children of Israel. ⁵ They crossed over the Jordan and began at Aroer, and from the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad; then on to Jazer. ⁶ Then they came to Gilead, and to the region of the Hethites, to Kedesh; and they came to Dan, and around to Sidon, ⁷ and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beersheba. ⁸ So when they had gone back and forth through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. ⁹ Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people to the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

¹ And an adversary up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel. ² And David said to Joab and to the leaders of the people, "Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know the sum of them." ³ Joab said, "May the LORD make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren't they all my lord's servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?" ⁴ Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem. ⁵ Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew sword: and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew sword.

¹ Now the children of Israel after their number, the heads of ancestral houses and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers who served the king, in any matter of the divisions which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year—of every division were twenty-four thousand.

²³ But David did not take the number of them from twenty years old and under, because the LORD had said he would increase Israel like the stars of the sky. ²⁴ Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but did not finish; and there came wrath for this on Israel; neither was the number entered in the scroll of the chronicles of King David.

³² Of the people of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their heads were two hundred; and all their brothers were at their commandment.

²¹ And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, and Beker, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, and Ahiram, and Shuppim, and Huppim, and Ard.

³⁸ The descendants of Benjamin after their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites; ³⁹ of Shuppim, the family of the Shuppimites; of Huppim, the family of the Huppimites. ⁴⁰ The sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the family of the Ardites; of Naaman, the family of the Naamanites. ⁴¹ These are the descendants of Benjamin after their families; and those who were numbered of them were forty-five thousand six hundred.

¹⁰ The sons of Jediael: Bilhan. The sons of Bilhan: Jeush, and Benjamin, and Ehud, and Kenaanah, and Zethan, and Tarshish, and Ahishahar. ¹¹ All these were sons of Jediael, heads of their fathers' houses, mighty men of valor, seventeen thousand and two hundred, who were able to go forth in the army for war.

¹ And Benjamin became the father of Bela his firstborn, Ashbel the second, and Aharah the third, ² Nohah the fourth, and Rapha the fifth. ³ And Bela had sons: Ard, and Gera, the father of Ehud. ⁴ These are the sons of Ehud: Abishua, and Naaman, and Ahijah, ⁵ and Gera, and Shephuphan, and Huram. ⁶ They are the heads of ancestral houses of the inhabitants of Geba, and they carried them captive to Manahath. ⁷ And Naaman, and Ahijah, and Gera, he sent them into exile. And Gera became the father of Uzza and Ahihud. ⁸ And Shaharaim became the father of children in the field of Moab after he had sent away his wives Hushim and Baara. ⁹ He became the father of Hodesh his wife, Jobab, and Zibia, and Mesha, and Malkam, ¹⁰ and Jeuz, and Sachia, and Mirmah. They also lived with their brothers in Jerusalem, over against their brothers. ³³ Ner became the father of Kish; and Kish became the father of Saul; and Saul became the father of Jonathan, and Malkishua, and Abinadab, and Ishbaal. ³⁴ The son of Jonathan was Mippibaal; and Mippibaal became the father of Micah. ³⁵ The sons of Micah: Pithon, and Melech, and Tarea, and Ahaz. ³⁶ Ahaz became the father of Jehoaddah; and Jehoaddah became the father of Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri became the father of Moza. ³⁷ Moza became the father of Binea; Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son. ³⁸ Azel had six sons, whose names are these: Azrikam, his firstborn, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Azariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel. ³⁹ The sons of Eshek his brother: Ulam his firstborn, Jeush the second, and Eliphelet the third. ⁴⁰ The sons of Ulam were mighty men of valor, archers, and had many sons, and sons' sons, one hundred fifty. All these were of the sons of Benjamin.

¹⁷ Of Benjamin: Eliada a mighty man of valor, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield; ¹⁸ and next to him Jehozabad and with him one hundred eighty thousand ready prepared for war.

¹⁵ But when the children of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised them up a savior, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. ¹⁶ Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, eighteen inches in length; and he girded it under his clothing on his right thigh. ¹⁷ He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man. ¹⁸ When he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people who bore the tribute. ¹⁹ But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, "I have a secret message for you, O king." The king said, "Keep silence." All who stood by him went out from him. ²⁰ Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, "I have a message from God to you, O king." He arose out of his seat. ²¹ And it happened as he rose up that Ehud put forth his left hand and took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into his belly. ²² And the handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn't draw the sword out of his belly; and it came out behind. ²³ Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them. ²⁴ Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and look, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, "Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room." ²⁵ They waited until they were ashamed; and look, he did not open the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened them, and look, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth. ²⁶ Ehud escaped while they waited, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped to Seirah. ²⁷ It happened, when he had come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he before them. ²⁸ He said to them, "Follow after me; for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand." They went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and did not allow a man to pass over. ²⁹ They struck of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man. ³⁰ So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Then the land had rest eighty years. And Ehud judged them until he died.

¹³ He had many works in the cities of Judah; and men of war, mighty men of valor, in Jerusalem. ¹⁴ This was the numbering of them according to their fathers' houses: Of Judah, the captains of thousands: Adnah the captain, and with him mighty men of valor three hundred thousand; ¹⁵ and next to him Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred eighty thousand; ¹⁶ and next to him Amasiah the son of Zikri, who willingly offered himself to the LORD; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valor. ¹⁷ Of Benjamin: Eliada a mighty man of valor, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield; ¹⁸ and next to him Jehozabad and with him one hundred eighty thousand ready prepared for war. ¹⁹ These were those who waited on the king, besides those whom the king put in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.

³⁸ The descendants of Benjamin after their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites; ³⁹ of Shuppim, the family of the Shuppimites; of Huppim, the family of the Huppimites.

¹⁵ And Makir took a wife of Huppim and Shuppim, whose sister's name was Maacah; and the name of the second was Zelophehad: and Zelophehad had daughters.

³ She said, "Look, my servant Bilhah. Sleep with her, so that she will bear children for me, that I too may have children through her." ⁴ So she gave him Bilhah her servant as a wife, and Jacob slept with her. ⁵ Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son. ⁶ Rachel said, "God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son." Therefore she called his name Dan. ⁷ Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son. ⁸ Rachel said, "I have wrestled mightily with my sister, and have prevailed." So she named him Naphtali.

²² It happened, while Israel lived in that land, that Reuben went and slept with Bilhah, his fatherʼs secondary wife, and Israel heard about it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.

²⁴ And the sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem. ²⁵ These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel; and these she bore to Jacob: all the persons were seven.

⁴⁸ The descendants of Naphtali after their families: of Jahzeel, the family of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the family of the Gunites; ⁴⁹ of Jezer, the family of the Jezerites; of Shillem, the family of the Shillemites.

²³ Joseph saw Ephraimʼs descendants to the third generation. The children also of Makir, the son of Manasseh, were counted as Josephʼs own.

²⁹ The descendants of Manasseh: of Makir, the family of the Makirites; and Makir became the father of Gilead; of Gilead, the family of the Gileadites. ³⁰ These are the descendants of Gilead: of Abiezer, the family of the Abiezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites; ³¹ and Asriel, the family of the Asrielites; and Shechem, the family of the Shechemites; ³² and Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites; and Hepher, the family of the Hepherites. ³³ Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters; and these are the names of the daughters of Zelophehad: Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. ³⁴ These are the families of Manasseh; and those who were numbered of them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred.

¹ Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.

³⁰ But if they will not pass over with you armed to battle before the LORD, then you are to bring over their children and their wives and their flocks before you into the land of Canaan, and they are to have possessions among you in the land of Canaan." ³¹ The people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, saying, "As the LORD has said to your servants, so will we do. ³² We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan." ³³ Moses gave to them, even to the people of Gad, and to the people of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to its cities and borders, even the cities of the surrounding land. ³⁴ The people of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer, ³⁵ and Atrothshophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah, ³⁶ and Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran: fortified cities, and folds for sheep. ³⁷ The people of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo, and Baal Meon, (their names being changed), and Sibmah: and they gave other names to the cities which they built. ³⁹ The descendants of Makir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. ⁴⁰ Moses gave Gilead to Makir the son of Manasseh; and he lived in it. ⁴¹ Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth Jair. ⁴² Nobah went and took Kenath, and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

¹³ and the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, gave I to the half-tribe of Manasseh. All the region of Argob, with all Bashan, was called the land of Rephaim. ¹⁴ Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, to the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called them, even Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth Jair, to this day.) ¹⁵ I gave Gilead to Makir.

³¹ Half Gilead, Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the descendants of Makir the son of Manasseh, even for the half of the descendants of Makir according to their families.

¹ This was the lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph. As for Makir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan. ² So this was for the rest of the descendants of Manasseh according to their families: for the descendants of Abiezer, for the descendants of Helek, for the descendants of Asriel, for the descendants of Shechem, for the descendants of Hepher, and for the descendants of Shemida: these were the male descendants of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families. ³ But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

¹⁴ From Ephraim those who uprooted Amalek came out, following you, Benjamin, among your peoples; out of Makir leaders came down, and out of Zebulun those that handle the staff of office.

²¹ Afterward Hezron slept with the daughter of Makir the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was sixty years old; and she bore him Segub. ²² Segub became the father of Jair, who had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. ²³ Geshur and Aram took the towns of Jair from them, with Kenath, and its villages, even sixty cities. All these were the descendants of Makir the father of Gilead.

³³ Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters; and these are the names of the daughters of Zelophehad: Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

¹ Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah. ² They stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, at the door of the Tent of Meeting, saying, ³ "Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah: but he died in his own sin; and he had no sons. ⁴ Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he had no son? Give to us a possession among the brothers of our father." ⁵ Moses brought their cause before the LORD. ⁶ The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ⁷ "The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: you shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers; and you shall cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them. ⁸ You shall speak to the children of Israel, saying, 'If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter. ⁹ If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. ¹⁰ If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. ¹¹ If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his kinsman who is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be to the children of Israel a statute and ordinance, as the LORD commanded Moses.'"

¹ The heads of the ancestral houses of the family of the people of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the leaders, the heads of the ancestral houses of the children of Israel. ² And they said, "The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. ³ If they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong: so will it be taken away from the lot of our inheritance. ⁴ When the jubilee of the children of Israel shall be, then will their inheritance be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong: so will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers." ⁵ Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, "The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks right. ⁶ This is the thing which the LORD does command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them be married to whom they think best; only into the family of the tribe of their father shall they be married. ⁷ So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall all keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers. ⁸ Every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may possess every man the inheritance of his fathers. ⁹ So shall no inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of the children of Israel shall each keep his own inheritance." ¹⁰ The daughters of Zelophehad did as the LORD commanded Moses: ¹¹ for Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to their father's brothers' sons. ¹² They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

¹¹ The LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Barak, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and you lived in safety.

³⁰ These are the descendants of Gilead: of Abiezer, the family of the Abiezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites;

¹¹ The angel of the LORD came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

²⁴ Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it "The LORD is Peace." To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

³⁴ But the Spirit of the LORD came on Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

² He said to them, "What have I now done in comparison with you? Isn't the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

³⁵ These are the descendants of Ephraim after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; of Beker, the family of the Bekerites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites. ³⁶ These are the descendants of Shuthelah: of Eden, the family of the Edenites.

³⁴ Then Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth around his waist, and mourned for his son many days.

¹¹ Now when Job's three friends heard of all this adversity that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.

⁵ Most certainly my house is not so with God, yet he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure, for it is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he doesn't make it grow.

¹⁰ The LORD confused them before Israel, and he killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth Horon, and struck them to Azekah and to Makkedah.

³ and it went down westward to the border of the Japhletites, to the border of Lower Beth Horon, even to Gezer; and ended at the sea.

⁵ This was the border of the descendants of Ephraim according to their families. The border of their inheritance eastward was Ataroth Addar, to Upper Beth Horon.

¹⁷ Solomon built Gezer, and Lower Beth Horon,

⁵ Also he built Upper Beth Horon, and Lower Beth Horon, fortified cities, with walls, gates, and bars;

⁹ Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us, and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with God's rod in my hand." ¹⁰ So Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. ¹¹ It happened, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. ¹² But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset. ¹³ Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. ¹⁴ The LORD said to Moses, "Write this for a memorial on a scroll, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under the sky."

¹³ Moses rose up with Joshua, his servant, and Moses went up onto God's Mountain.

¹⁷ When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, "There is the noise of war in the camp."

²⁸ Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his chosen men, answered, "My lord Moses, forbid them."

⁸ Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.

¹⁶ These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

⁶ Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes:

¹⁸ The LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;

²³ He commissioned Joshua the son of Nun, and said, "Be strong and courageous; for you shall bring the children of Israel into the land which I swore to them: and I will be with you."

⁴⁵ which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers, to the days of David,

⁸ For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day.

¹⁹ He called the name of that place Bethel, though previously the city was named Luz.

² It went out from Bethel to Luz, and passed along to the border of the Archites at Ataroth; ³ and it went down westward to the border of the Japhletites, to the border of Lower Beth Horon, even to Gezer; and ended at the sea.

²² And the house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them.

⁶⁶ Some of the families of the descendants of Kohath, of the Levites, even the rest of the descendants of Kohath, had cities of their borders out of the tribe of Ephraim. ⁶⁷ They gave to them the cities of refuge, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim with its suburbs; Gezer also with its suburbs,

¹ The lot came out for the descendants of Joseph from the Jordan at Jericho, at the waters of Jericho on the east, even the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill country to Bethel. ² It went out from Bethel to Luz, and passed along to the border of the Archites at Ataroth; ³ and it went down westward to the border of the Japhletites, to the border of Lower Beth Horon, even to Gezer; and ended at the sea. ⁴ The descendants of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their inheritance. ⁵ This was the border of the descendants of Ephraim according to their families. The border of their inheritance eastward was Ataroth Addar, to Upper Beth Horon. ⁶ The border went out westward at Michmethath on the north of Termah. The border turned about eastward to Taanath Shiloh, and passed along it on the east of Janoah. ⁷ It went down from Janoah to Ataroth, to Naaratah, reached to Jericho, and went out at the Jordan. ⁸ From Tappuah the border went along westward to Wadi Kanah; and ended at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the descendants of Ephraim according to their families; ⁹ together with the cities which were set apart for the descendants of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the descendants of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages. ¹⁰ They did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell in the midst of Ephraim to this day, and have become servants to do forced labor.

⁷ The border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, which is before Shechem. The border went along to the right hand to Jashub and to En Tappuah. ⁸ The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh; but Tappuah, on the border of Manasseh, belonged to the descendants of Ephraim. ⁹ The border went down to Wadi Kanah, southward of the wadi. These cities belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the wadi, and ended at the sea. ¹⁰ Southward it was Ephraim's, and northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea was his border. They reached to Asher on the north, and to Issachar on the east. ¹¹ And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher, Beth Shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; three regions.

²² And the house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them. ²³ And the house of Joseph sent out spies to Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.) ²⁴ And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they captured him, and they said to him, "Please show us the entrance into the city, and we will show you mercy." ²⁵ He showed them the entrance into the city; and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family. ²⁶ The man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day. ²⁷ Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its towns, nor Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. ²⁸ It happened, when Israel had grown strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and did not utterly drive them out. ²⁹ Ephraim didn't drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

¹⁹ The kings came and fought, then the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of Megiddo. They took no plunder of silver.

¹⁰ They put his armor in the house of the Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.

¹² Baana the son of Ahilud, in Taanach and Megiddo, and all Beth Shean which is beside Zarethan, beneath Jezreel, from Beth Shean to Abel Meholah, as far as beyond Jokmeam;

¹⁵ This is the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised, to build the house of the LORD, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.

²⁷ But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. Jehu followed after him, and said, "Shoot him also." And they shot him in the chariot at the ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. He fled to Megiddo, and died there.

²⁹ In his days Pharaoh Necoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Perath: and king Josiah went against him; and Pharaoh Necoh killed him at Megiddo, when he had seen him.

²² Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and did not listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo.

¹¹ In that day there will be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.

¹⁶ He gathered them together into the place which is called in Hebrew, Har Megiddo.

¹⁷ And the sons of Asher: Jimnah, and Jishvah, and Jishvi, and Beriah, and Serah their sister. And the sons of Beriah: Heber, and Malkiel.

⁴⁴ The descendants of Asher after their families: of Imnah, the family of the Jimnaites; of Jishvi, the family of the Jishvites; of Beriah, the family of the Berites. ⁴⁵ Of the descendants of Beriah: of Heber, the family of the Heberites; of Malkiel, the family of the Malkielites. ⁴⁶ The name of the daughter of Asher was Serah.
