³ And he dwelt in the place of sepulchres; and no one could confine him with chains:

¹⁸ And wherever he seizeth him, he shaketh and teareth him: and he gnasheth his teeth, and pineth away. And I spoke to thy disciples, to cast him out; and they could not. ¹⁹ Jesus answered, and said to them: O incredulous generation! How long shall I be with you? how long bear with you? Bring him to me. ²⁰ And they brought him to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately he shook him; and he fell upon the ground, and wallowed and foamed. ²¹ And Jesus asked his father, how long a time he had been thus. He said to him: Lo, from his childhood. ²² And many times it hath thrown him into the fire, and into the water, to destroy him. But, if thou canst do any thing, aid me and have compassion on me.

²⁹ For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit, to come out of the man: for, of a long time he had been held captive by him; and he had been bound with chains, and held in fetters; but he had burst the bonds, and had been driven by the demon into the desert.
