²⁵ And one of John's disciples and a certain Jew had disputed respecting purification.

¹¹ I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance; but he that cometh after me is more powerful than I; whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

² And they saw some of his disciples eating bread, with their hands unwashed; and they censured it. ³ For all the Jews and the Pharisees, unless they carefully wash their hands do not eat; because they hold fast the tradition of the Elders. ⁴ And coming from the market-place, except they baptize, they do not eat. And there are many other things which they have received to observe, such as the baptisms of cups, and of pots, and of brazen vessels, and of couches. ⁵ And the Scribes and Pharisees asked him: Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the Elders, but eat bread with their hands unwashed?

⁸ For ye have forsaken the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men, the baptisms of cups, and of pots, and many things like these.

⁶ And there were there six waterpots of stone, set for the purification of Jews, containing each two or three quadrantalia.

² and for the doctrine of baptism, and for the laying on of a hand, and for the resurrection from the dead, and for the eternal judgment?

¹⁰ but they consisted only in food and drink, and in the ablutions of divers things; which were carnal ordinances, and were set up until the time of a reformation.

¹³ For if the blood of goats and calves, with the ashes of a heifer, was sprinkled upon them that were defiled, and sanctified them as to the purification of their flesh; ¹⁴ then how much more will the blood of the Messiah, who by the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purge our conscience from dead works, so that we may serve the living God?

²³ For it was necessary that these, the emblems of heavenly things, should be purified, with those things; but the heavenly things themselves, with sacrifices superior to them.

²¹ And ye also, by a like figure, are made alive by baptism, (not when ye wash your bodies from filth, but when ye confess God with a pure conscience,) and by the resurrection of Jesus the Messiah;
