¹⁴ Ye haue sayed. Is it but lost labour, to serue God? What profyt haue we for keping his commaundementes, and for walkinge humbly before the Lorde of Hostes?

¹⁴ They say vnto God: go from vs: we desyre not the knowledge of thy wayes. ¹⁵ What maner of felow is the Almightye, that we shoulde serue him? What profyt should we haue, to submitte oure selues vnto hym?

¹⁷ whiche say vnto God: go from vs, and after this maner: Tush, what wyll the Almyghty do vnto vs?

⁹ For he sayeth: Thoughe a man be good, yet is he naughte before God.

³ Seynge, thou sayest so, howe doest thou knowe it? What thynge haste thou more excellente then I, that I am a synner?

⁸ Corrupte are they, and speake blasphemyes maliciouslye, proude and presumpteous are their wordes. ⁹ They stretche forth their mouthe vnto the heauen, and their tongue goeth thorow the worlde. ¹⁰ Therfore fall the people vnto them, and thereout sucke they no small auauntage. ¹¹ Tush (saye they) howe shoulde God perceiue it? is there knowlege in the most hyest? ¹² Lo, these are the vngodly, these prospere in the worlde, these haue ryches in possession. ¹³ Shoulde I then clense my herte in vayne (thougt I) and washe my handes in innocency?

³ Wherfore fast we (saye they) and thou seist it not? we put oure lyues to straytnesse, & thou regardest it not?

¹² Now therfore sayeth the Lorde: Turne you vnto me wyth all youre hertes, wyth fastynge, wepynge and mournynge,

¹² At the same tyme will I seke thorowe Ierusalem with lanternes, and vpset them that contynue in theyr dregges, and saye in theyr hertes. Tushe, the Lorde wil do neyther good nor euyll.

³ & that they should say vnto the priestes, which were in the house of the Lord of hostes, & to the prophetes: should I wepe in the fyfte moneth, and absteyne, as I haue done now cerrtain yeares? ⁴ Then came the word of the Lorde of hostes vnto me, saying: ⁵ Speake vnto all the people of the land, & to the priestes, and saye: when ye fasted and mourneth in the .v. & .vij. moneth (now this .lxx. yeares) dyd ye fast vnto me? ⁶ When ye ate also and droncke; dyd ye not eate & drincke for youre owne selues?

⁹ Suffer afflictyons: sorowe ye and wepe. Let youre laughter be turned to mornynge and youre ioye to heauynes.
