⁶ But shall not all these take vp a prouerbe agaynst hym, & mocke hym with a byworde & saye: Wo vnto hym that heapeth vp other mens goodes? Howe longe wyll he lade hym selfe with thicke claye?

⁷ And he began hys parable and said: Balac the king of Moab hath fette me from Mesopotamia out of the mountaynes of the east, sayinge: come and curse me Iacob, come & defye me Israel.

¹⁸ And he toke vp hys parable and said: rise vp Balac and heare, & herken vnto me thou sonne of Ziphor.

¹⁵ The ryches that he deuoureth, shall he perbreake agayne, for God shal draw them out of his bely ¹⁶ he shal sucke the serpentes head, & the adders tonge shal slaye hym: ¹⁷ so that he shall nomore se the ryuers & brokes of honye & butter: ¹⁸ But laboure shall he, and yet haue nothinge to eate. Greate trauayle shall he make for ryches, but he shall not enioye them. ¹⁹ And why? he hath oppressed the poore, and not helped them: houses hath he spoyled, and not builded them. ²⁰ Hys bely could neuer be fylled, therfore shall he perish in his coueteousnesse. ²¹ He deuoured so gredely that he lefte nothinge behinde, therfore hys goodes shall not prospere. ²² Thoughe he had plenteousnesse of euery thynge, yet was he poore, and therefore he is but a wretche on euery syde. ²³ For though the wicked haue neuer so much to fyll his bely, yet God shall send his wrath vpon hym, and cause hys battaill to raygne ouer him: ²⁴ so that yf he fle the yron wepens, he shall be shott with the stele bowe. ²⁵ The arow shal be taken forth, and go out at hys backe, and a glistering swearde thorow the gall of him, feare shall come vpon him. ²⁶ There shal no darcknes be able to hyd him. And vnkindled fyre shall consume him, and loke what remayneth in his house, it shalbe destroyed. ²⁷ The heauen shal declare his wickednesse, and the earth shall take parte agaynst hym. ²⁸ The substaunce that he hath in hys house, shalbe taken away and peryshe, in the daye of the Lordes wrath. ²⁹ This is the porcyon that the wycked shall haue of God, and the heretage that he may loke for of the Lorde.

⁶ thou hast taken the pledge from thy brethren for nought and robbed the naked of their clothing. ⁷ To suche as were wery, hast thou geuen no water to drincke, thou hast withdrawen bread from the hungry. ⁸ Shoulde suche one then as vseth violence, wrong and oppression (doing al thing of parcialite, and hauinge respecte of personnes) dwel in the lande? ⁹ Thou hast sent wyddowes away emptye and oppressed the poore fatherlesse. ¹⁰ Therfore art thou compased aboute wyth snares on euery side, and sodenly vexed with feare.

³ Lorde how longe shall the vngodly, how longe shall the vngodly triumphe?

¹⁶ Who so doth a pore man wrong to increase his owne riches, geueth (commenly) vnto the rych, & at the last commeth to pouerte him selfe.

⁴ then shalte thou vse thys mockage vpon the Kynge of Babylon, and saye: Howe happeneth it, that the oppressoure leaueth of? Is the goulden trybute come to an ende? ⁵ Douteles the Lorde hathe broken the staffe of the vngodlye, and the scepter of the lordly. ⁶ Whyche when he is wrothe, smyteth the people with durable strokes, and in his wonders he persecuteth them, and tameth them continually. ⁷ And therfore the whole worlde is now at reste and quyetnesse, and men sing for ioye. ⁸ Yea, euen the Fyrre trees and Cedres of Libanus reioyse at thy fall, sayinge: Nowe that thou arte laide doune, there come no mo vp to destroye vs. ⁹ Hell also trembleth at thy commynge, all myghtye men, and Prynces of the earth, steppe forth before the. All Kynges of the earth stande vp from their seates, ¹⁰ that they may all (one after another) synge & speake vnto the. Art thou wounded also as we? art thou become lyke vnto vs? ¹¹ Thy pompe and thy pryde is gone doune to hell. Mothes shalbe layde vnder the, and wormes shalbe thy coueringe. ¹² How art thou fallen from heauen (O Lucifer) thou faire mornyng childe? hast thou gotten a fal euen to the ground, thou that (not withstanding) diddest subdue the people. ¹³ And yet thou thoughtest in thyne herte: I wyll climme vp into heauen, and make my seate aboue the starres of God, I wyl syt vpon the glorious mounte toward the North, ¹⁴ I wyll climme vp aboue the cloudes, and wylbe like the hyghest of all. ¹⁵ Yet darre I saye, that thou shalt be brought doune to the depe of hel. ¹⁶ They that se the, shal narowly loke vpon the, and thinke in them selues, sayenge: Is thys the man, that brought all landes in feare, and made the kyngedomes afrayde. ¹⁷ Is this he that made the worlde in a maner waste, and layde the cytyes to the grounde, whyche let not his prisoners go home? ¹⁸ How happeneth it, that the kynges of all people lye, euery one at home in his owne palace, with worshyppe, ¹⁹ and thou art cast oute of thy graue, like a wild braunch: like as dead mens raiment that are shot thorow wyth the swerde: as they that go doune to the stones of the depe, as a deade coarse that is troden vnder fete:

²⁰ The kepyng of dust, and folishnesse of herte hath turned them asyde: so that none of them can haue a fre conscience to thyncke maye not I erre?

² Wherfore do ye laye oute youre moneye, for the thing that fedeth not, and spende youre laboure aboute the thynge that satisfyed you not. But herken rather vnto me, & ye shall eate of the beste, & youre soule shall haue her pleasure in plentuousnes.

²² And all the presonners of Iuda that are in Babylon, shall take vpon them thys terme of cursynge, and saye: Now God do vnto the, as he dyd vnto Zedekiah & Ahab, whome the kynge of Babylon rosted in the fyre,

¹³ No man shall be able to dwell there, for the feare of the Lorde, but she shall be whole desolate. All they that go by Babylon, shall stande styll, & be abashed, and shall wondre at all her plages.

³⁴ Nabuchodonosor the kynge of Babylon hath deuoured & destroyed me, he hath made me an emptye vessell. He swalowed me vp lyke a dragon, and filled his bely with my delycates: he hath cast me oute, ³⁵ he hath taken my substaunce awaye and the thynge that was lefte me, hath he caryed vnto Babylon, sayeth the doughter that dwelleth in Syon: yea and my bloude also vnto the Caldees, sayeth Ierusalem.

²¹ The myghtye worthyes and hys helpers, that be gone doune, and lye wyth the vncyrcumcysed, and with them that be slayne wyth the swearde, shall speake to hym oute of the hell.

⁴ In that daye shall thys terme be vsed, and a mournynge shalbe made ouer you on thys maner: We be vtterly desolate, the porcyon of my people is translated. When wyll he parte vnto vs the lande, that he hath taken from vs?

⁹ They come all to spoyle: oute of them commeth an easte wynde, whiche bloweth and gathereth theyr captyues, lyke as the sande. ¹⁰ They shall mocke the kynges, and laughe the princes to scorne. They shal not set by any stronge holde, for they shall laye ordynaunce agaynst it, and take it.

¹⁵ They take vp all with theyr angle, they catche it in theyr net, and gather it in theyr yarne: whereof they reioyce, and are glad,

¹³ Shall not the Lorde of hostes brynge thys to passe, that the laboures of the people shal be brent wyth a greate fyre, & that the thynge wherevpon the people haue weeryed them selues, shall be lost?

²⁰ But God sayed vnto hym: Thou fole, thys nyghte wyll they fetche awaye thy soule agayne from the. Then whose shall these thinges be which thou haste prouyded?

²⁹ This saye I brethren the tyme is short. It remaineth that they which haue wiues, be as though they had none, ³⁰ and they that wepe be as though they wept not, and they that reioyse be as though they reioysed not: & they that bye, be as though they possessed not: ³¹ and they that vse this worlde, be as though they vsed it not. For the fashion of this world goeth away.

¹ Go to nowe ye ryche men. Weepe, and howle on your wretchednes that shal come vpon you. ² Youre ryches is corrupte youre garmentes are motheaten. ³ Your gold and your siluer are cankered, & the ruste of them shal be a witnes vnto you, and shall eate your fleshe, as it were fyre. Ye haue heaped treasure together in your laste dayes: ⁴ Beholde the hyre of the labourers which haue reped doun your fieldes (which hyer is of you kept backe by fraude) crieth: & the cryes of them whiche haue reped, are entred into the eares of the Lorde Sabaoth

⁷ The ende of al thinges is at hande. Be ye therfore discrete and sober, that ye maye be apt to prayers.
