¹⁴ Therto all the rulers of the preastes with the people trespaced a pace after all maner of abhomynacyons of the hethen & poluted the house of the Lorde which he had halowed in Ierusalem. ¹⁵ And the Lord God of theyr fathers sent to them by his messengers, sendynge them be tymes: for he had compassyon on hys people & on his dwellynge place. ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God & despised theyr wordes & mysse vsed his prophetes, vntyll the wrath of the Lord so arose agaynst hys people that it was past remeadie.

⁴ What more coulde haue bene done for it, that I haue not done? Wherfore then hath it geuen thornes, where I loked to haue had grapes of it? ⁵ Well, I shall tell you how I wyl do with my vineyarde: I will take the hedge from it, that it maye perishe, & breake doune the wall, that it maye be troden vnder fote. ⁶ I wyl laye it waste, that it shall neyther be twisted nor cut, but beare thornes and breares. I wil also forbydde the cloudes, that they shall not raine vpon it.

¹³ For the people turneth not vnto hym, that chastyseth them, nether do they seke the Lorde of Hostes. ¹⁴ Therfore the Lorde shal rote oute of Israel bothe head & tayle, braunch and twigge in one daye. ¹⁵ By the heade, is vnderstande the Senatoure and honorable man, and by the tayle, the Prophet that preacheth lyes. ¹⁶ For al they whiche enfourme the people that they be in a righte case, suche be disceyuers. Suche as men thyncke also to be perfecte amonge these, are but cast awaye. ¹⁷ Therfore shall the Lorde haue no pleasure in their yonge men, neyther fauoure their fatherlesse and wyddowes. For they are all together ypocrytes and wicked, and all their mouthes speake foly. After all this shall not the Lordes wrathe ceasse, but yet his hande shalbe stretched oute still.

²⁸ For they are al vnfaythfull and fallen awaye, they hange vpon fylthy lucre, they are cleane brasse & yron for they hurte and destroye euerye man. ²⁹ The bellous are brent in the fyre, the lead is consumed, the melter melteth in vayne, for the euyll is not taken awaye from them. ³⁰ Therfore shal they be called naughtye syluer, because the Lorde hath caste them oute.

³ From the .xiij. yeare of Iosiah the sonne of Amon kynge of Iuda, vnto this present daye (that is euen .xxiij. yeare) the worde of the Lorde hath bene commytted vnto me. And so I haue spoken to you, I haue rysen vp early I haue geuen you warnyng in season, but ye wolde not heare me. ⁴ Though the Lorde hath sent his seruauntes, all the prophetes vnto you in season: Yet wolde ye not obeye, ye wolde not enclyne youre eares to heare. ⁵ He sayde: turne agayne euery man from hys euell waye, & from your wicked ymaginacions, and so shall ye dwell for euer in the lande, that the Lorde promesed you & youre forefathers: ⁶ And go not after straunge goddes serue them not, worshipe them not, and angre me not wyth the worckes of youre handes: then wyll not I punish you. ⁷ Neuertheles, ye wolde not heare me (sayeth the Lorde) but haue defyed me with the worckes of youre handes, to youre owne greate harme.

¹⁸ Moreouer I hearde Ephraim, that was led awaye captyue, complayne on thys maner: O Lorde, thou haste correcte me, and thy chastening haue I receyued, as an vntamed calfe. Conuerte thou me, and I shalbe conuerted, for thou arte my Lorde God:

¹³ Thus I wyll perfourme my indignacion & set my wrath agaynst them, and ease my selfe. So that when I haue fulfylled myne anger agaynst them, they shall knowe that I am the Lorde, whiche with a feruent glousye haue spoken it.

¹⁸ Therfore wyll I also do some thynge in my wrothfull displeasure, so that myne eye shall not ouerse them, nether wyll I spare them. Yea and though they crye in myne eares with loude voyce, yet wyll I not heare them.

⁴² Shoulde I make my wrath to be styl, take my gelousy from the, be content, and no more to be displeased?

²⁴ Thou sonne of man, tell her: thou art an vncleane lande, whiche is not rayned vpon in the daye of the cruell wrath:

³⁶ The Lord sayde moreouer vnto me: Thou sonne of man wilt thou not reproue Oholah and Oholibah? Shewe them their abhominacyons: ³⁷ namelye, that they haue broken their wedlocke, and stayned their handes with bloud: yea euen with their ydoles haue they committed aduoutry, & offered them their owne children (to be deuoured) whom they had borne vnto me. ³⁸ Yea, and this haue they done vnto me: also, they haue defiled my Sanctuary in that same daye, & haue vnhalowed my Sabboth. ³⁹ For when they haue slayne their children for their Idoles, they came the same daye into my Sanctuary to defile it. Lo, thys haue they done in my house. ⁴⁰ Beside all thys, thou hast sent thy messaungers for men oute of farre countreyes: and when they came, thou hast bated, trimmed and set forth thy selfe of the best fashion: ⁴¹ thou sattest vpon a goodlye bed, & a table spred before the: whervpon thou hast set mine incense and myne oyle. ⁴² Then was there greate cheare with her, & the men that were sent from farre countreyes ouer the desert, vnto these they gaue bracelettes vpon their handes, and set glorious crounes vpon their heades: ⁴³ then thought I: no doute, these will vse their harlotry also wyth yonder old whore. ⁴⁴ And they wente into her, as vnto a comen harlot: Euen so wente they also to Oholah & Oholibah those fylthy wemen. ⁴⁵ O ye all that loue vertu & ryghteousnes, iudge them, punish them, as aduoutrers and murtherers ought to be iudged & punished. For they are breakers of wedlocke, and the bloude is in their handes. ⁴⁶ Wherfore thus sayeth the Lorde God: bringe a great multitude of people vpon them, & make them be scatred and spoyled: ⁴⁷ these shall stone them, & gore them with their swerdes. They shall slaye their sonnes and doughters and burne vp their houses with fyre. ⁴⁸ Thus will I destroye all such filthynes out of the land: that al wemen may learne, not to do after your vnclennesse.

¹¹ Moreouer, set the pot empty vpon the coales, that it may be warme & the metall hote: that the fylth & rustinesse maye be consumed.

¹ When I vndertake to make Israel whole, then the vngracyousnes of Ephraim and the wickednes of Samaria commeth to lyght: then go they aboute with lyes. At home, they be theues: & withoute they fall to robbinge.

⁹ straungers haue deuoured his strength, yet he regardeth it not: he waxeth ful of gray hearres: yet will he not know it, ¹⁰ and the pryd of Israell is caste doune before their fare, yet wil they not turne to the Lord their God, nor seke him for all this. ¹¹ Ephraim is lyke a doue, that is begyled, and hathe no herte. Nowe call they vpon the Egipcians, nowe go they to the Assyryans, ¹² but whyle they be goynge here and there, I shall sprede my net ouer them, and draw them doune as the foules of the ayre: & accordinge as they haue bene warned, so will I punyshe them. ¹³ Wo be vnto them, for they haue forsaken me. They must be destroyed, for they haue set me at naught. I am he that haue redemed them, and yet they dissemble with me. ¹⁴ They call not vpon me with their hertes, but lye houlinge vpon their beddes. Where as they come together; it is but for meate and drincke, and me wil they not obeye. ¹⁵ I haue taught them, and defended their arme, yet do they ymagin mischefe agaynst me. ¹⁶ They turne them selues, but not a right, and are becomen as a broken bowe. Their pryntes shal be slaine with the swerde, for the malyce of their tunges, such blasphemies haue they learned in the lande of Egipte.

⁶ Therfore haue I geuen you ydle teeth in all youre cytyes, and carnesse of bread in all your places, yet wil ye not turne vnto me, sayeth the Lorde. ⁷ When here were but thre monethes vnto the haruest I wythhelde the rayne from you: yea I rayned vpon one cytye, and not vpon another, one pece of grounde was moystured wyth rayne, and the grounde that I rayned not vpon was drye. ⁸ Wherfore two, yea thre cytes came vnto one to dryncke water: but they were not satisfyed, yet wyll ye not, turne vnto me, sayeth the Lorde. ⁹ I haue smiten you with drouth & blasting: and loke howe manye orchardes, vineyardes, fyggetrees & olyue trees ye had: the caterpyller hath eaten them vp. But yet wil ye not turne vnto me, sayeth the Lorde. ¹⁰ Pestylence haue I sente amonge you, as I dyd in Egipt: youre yong men haue I slayne with the swerd, and caused youre horses be taken captyue: I made the stynkynge sauoure of youre tentes to come vp into youre nostrels: Yet wyll ye not turne vnto me, sayeth the Lorde. ¹¹ Some of you haue I ouerthrowen, as I ouerthrew Sodome and Gomorre, so that ye were as brand plucte oute of the fyre. Yet wyll ye not turne vnto me, sayeth the Lorde. ¹² Therfore thus wyl I handle the agayn, O Israel, yea, euen thus wyl I handle the. Make the ready then to mete thy God, O Israel.

² whiche will not heart, nor be refourmed. Get trust is not in the Lord, neither wyll she holde her to her goo.

⁷ I sayde vnto them: O feare me, and be contente to be refourmed. That theyr dwellynge shulde not be destroyed, and that there shulde happen vnto them none of these thynges, wherewyth I shall vyset them. But neuertheles they stande vp earlye, to folowe the fylthynes of theyr owne ymagynacions.

³⁷ Ierusalem, Ierusalem which killest prophetes, and stone them which are sent to the: howe often would I haue gathered thy children together: as the henne gathered her chikens vnder her winges, but ye would not. ³⁸ Beholde your habitation shalbe left vnto you desolate.

⁷ Then sayde he to the dresser of hys vyneyard: Beholde thys thre yeare haue I come and sought frute in thys fygge tre, and fynde none, cut it doune: why comvreth it the grounde. ⁸ And he aunswered, & sayde vnto hym: Lorde let it alone thys yeare also, tyll I digge rounde aboute it, and dounge it, ⁹ to se whether it wyl beare frute, and yf it beare not then, after that cut it doune.

⁸ But vnto them that are rebellious and disobey the trueth, and folowe iniquitie, shall come indignacion and wrath, ⁹ tribulacion and anguishe, vpon the souls of euerye man that doeth euyll: of the Iewe fyrst, and also of the gentyll.

¹ Seynge that we haue such promyses dearely beloued, let vs cleanse oure selues from al fylthynesse of the fleshe & spyrite, and grow vp to full holynesse in the feare of God.

¹¹ He that doeth euill, let hym do euyll styll, & he whiche is filthy, let him be filthy still: & he that is ryghteous, let hym be more righteous: & he that is holy, let him be more holy
