¹ The worde of the Lorde came vnto me, sayinge: ² Thou sonne of man, thou dwellest in the myddest of a frowarde housholde: whiche haue eyes to se, and yet se not: eares haue they to hear, & yet heare thei not, for they are an obstinate housholde. ³ Therfore (O thou sonne of man) make thy gere ready to flyt, and go forth by fayre daye lyghte, that they may se. Yea euen in theyr syght shalt thou go from thy place to another place: yf peraduenture they wyll consydre, that they be an vnobedyente housholde. ⁴ Thy gere that thou hast made redy to flyt withal, shalt thou bear oute by fayre daye lyghte, that they maye se: and thou thy selfe shalte go forth also at euen in theyr sighte, as a man doeth when he flytteth. ⁵ Dygge thorowe the wall, that they may se, & beare thorowe it the same thing, that thou tokest vp ⁶ in theyr sight. As for thy selfe, thou shalte go forth in the darcke. Hyde thy face that thou se not the earthe, for I haue made the a shewtoken vnto the house of Israel. ⁷ Nowe as the Lorde commaunded me, so I dyd: the gere that I had made ready, brought I oute by daye. At euen I brake doune an hole thorowe the wall with my hande: & when it was darcke, I toke the gere vpon my shoulders, and bare them oute in theyr syghte. ⁸ And in the mornynge, came the worde of the Lorde vnto me, sayinge: ⁹ Thou sonne of man, yf Israell that frowarde houshold aske the, and saye: what doest thou there? ¹⁰ Then tel them: Thus saith the Lorde God: Thys punyshmente toucheth the chefe rulers at Ierusalem, & all the house of Israell, that dwel amonge them: ¹¹ Tell them: I am youre shewtoken: lyke as I haue done, so shall it happen vnto you: Flyt shall ye also, and go into captyuyte. ¹² The chefest that is amonge you, shall lade hys shoulders in the darcke, and get him awaye. He shall breake doune the wal, to cary stuf there thorowe: He shall couer hys face, that he se not the grounde, with his eyes. ¹³ My lyne wyll I sprede oute vpon hym, & catche him in my net, & carye hym to Babylon, in the lande of the Caldees: whiche he shall not se, and yet shall he dye there. ¹⁴ As for al his helpers, & all hys hostes, that be aboute hym, I wyll scatre them towarde all the wyndes, and drawe out a sweard after them. ¹⁵ So when I haue scatred them amonge the Heathen, and strowed them in the landes, they shall knowe, that I am the Lorde. ¹⁶ But I wyll leaue a lytle nombre of them from the swearde, hunger and pestilence: to tell all theyr abhomynacyons amonge the Heathen, where they come, that they maye knowe, howe that I am the Lorde. ¹⁷ Moreouer, the worde of the Lorde came vnto me, sayinge: ¹⁸ Thou sonne of man: wyth a fearfull tremblynge shalte thou eate thy breade, with carefulnesse & sorowe shalte thou drincke thy water. ¹⁹ And vnto the people of the lande, speake thou on thys maner: Thus sayeth the Lorde God, to them that dwell in Ierusalem, & to the lande of Israel: Ye shall eate youre breade with sorowe, and drincke youre water with heuynesse: Yea the lande with the fulnesse therof shalbe layde waste, for the wickednesse of them that dwell therin. ²⁰ And the cyties that nowe be well occupyed, shall be voyde, and the lande desolate: that ye maye knowe, how that I am the Lorde. ²¹ Yet came the worde of the Lorde vnto me agayne, sayinge: ²² Thou sonne of man, what maner of byworde is that, whiche ye vse in the lande of Israel, sayinge: Thus, seynge that the dayes are so slacke in commynge, all the visyons are of none effecte: ²³ Tell them therfore: thus sayth the Lorde God: I wil make that by worde to ceasse, so that it shal no more be commonlye vsed in Israel. But saye this vnto them: The dayes are at hande, that euery thinge whiche hath bene prophecyed, shalbe fulfylled. ²⁴ There shal no visyon be in vayne, neyther anye prophecye fayle amonge the chyldren of Israel: ²⁵ For it is I the Lorde, that speake it: and whatsoeuer I the Lorde speake, it shall be perfourmed, & not be slacke in commynge. Yea euen in youre dayes (O ye frowarde housholde) wyll I deuyce some thynge, and brynge it to passe, sayeth the Lord God. ²⁶ And the worde of the Lorde came vnto me, saying: ²⁷ Beholde, thou sonne of man: The house of Israel saye in this maner: Tushe, as for the vysion that he hath sene, it wil be many a day or it come to passe: Is it farre of it, the thyng that he prophecyeth. ²⁸ Therfore say vnto them: Thus sayth the Lorde GOD: All my wordes shall no more be slacke: Loke what I speake, that same shall come to passe, sayeth the Lorde.

And lo, I wyl destroye them with the erth.

¹⁶ And I wyll make thy sede, as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can numbre the duste of the earth, then shall thy sede also be numbred.

²⁶ And when I haue broken the staffe of your bread: that .x. wyues shall bake your breade in one ouen and men shall deliuer you youre bread agayne by wayght, then shall ye eate and not be satisfied.

³³ And I wyl strawe you among the Heathen, and wyl draw out a swerde after you, and youre land shal be waste, and your cityes desolate.

³⁶ And vpon them that are left a liue of you I wyl sende a fayntnes into theyr hertes, in all the land of their enemies: so that the sound of a leaf that falleth, shall chase them & they shall flee as though they fled a swerde, and shall fal, no man folowyng them.

⁴⁰ And they shall confesse theyr misdeades and the mysdeades of theyr fathers in theyr trespaces, which they haue trespaced agaynst me, & for that also that they haue walked contrary to me. ⁴¹ Therfore I also wyl walke contrarye vnto them, and wyl brynge theym into the lande of theyr enemies. And then at the least waye theyr vncircumcised hertes shalbe tamed, & then they shall make an atonement for theyr mysdeades.

²⁸ I haue hearde the murmurynges of the chyldren of Israell whych they murmure against me. Tel them that the Lorde sayeth. As truely as I lyue, I wyl do vnto you euen as ye haue spoken in myne eares. ²⁹ Your carkesses shal lye in thys wyldernesse, nether shal any of these nombres whych were nombred from .xx. yere & aboue of you which haue murmured agaynste me ³⁰ come into the land ouer which I lyfted mine hande to make you dwel therin, saue Caleb the sonne of Iephune, and Iosua the sonne of Nun. ³¹ And your children which ye said should be a praye, them I wyl bryng in, and they shall knowe the lande which ye haue refused, ³² and youre carkesses shall lye in this wyldernesse ³³ And your chyldren shall wandre in this wildernesse .xl. yeres and suffer for your whoredome vntil your carkesses be wasted in the wildernesse, ³⁴ after the nombre of the daies in which ye serched out the land .xl. daies, & euery daye a yere: so that they shall beare your vnryghteousnes .xl. yere, & ye shal fele my vengeaunce

²⁹ Oh that they had such an hert wyth them to feare me and kepe al my commaundementes alway, that it myght go wel with them & with theyr children foreuer.

⁷ Remembre & forget not how thou prouokedest the lord thy God in the wildernes: for sence the day that thou camest out of the land of Egipt vntil ye came vnto this place, ye haue rebelled against the Lorde.

²⁴ Thus ye haue bene disobedient to the Lord, sence the daye that I knew you.

⁴⁸ therfore thou shalt serue thyne enemye which the Lord shall sende vpon the: in hunger and thrust, in nakednesse and in nede of all thynge: & he shall put a yocke of yeron vpon thyne necke, vntyll he haue broughte the to nought.

⁶⁵ And amonge these nacyons thou shalt be no small ceason, and yet shalt haue no reste to the sole of thy foote. For the Lorde shall geue the there a tremblynge herte & dasynge eyes & sorowe of mynde.

⁴ & yet the Lord hath not geuen you an herte to perceyue, nor eyes to se, nor eares to heere vnto thys daye.

²⁴ And then shal al nacions also say: wherfore hath the Lorde done of this facion vnto this lande? O how fearse is this great wrath? ²⁵ And men shal saye: because they lefte the testament of the Lorde God of their fathers which he made with them, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. ²⁶ And they went & serued straunge goddes & worshipped them: goddes which they knew not and which had geuen them nought. ²⁷ And therfore the wrath of the Lorde waxed whote vpon that lande to bryng vpon it all the curses that are written in this boke. ²⁸ And the Lorde cast them out of their lande in angre, wrath and greate furyousnesse, and cast them in to a straunge land, as it is come to passe this day.

²⁷ I for knowe thy stubburnes and thy styffe necke: beholde whyle I am yet a lyue wyth you thys daye, ye haue bene disobediente vnto the Lorde: & howe much more after my death?

⁴ My herte smytten doune and wythered lyke grasse, so that I forgette too eate my bread. ⁵ For the voyce of my gronynge, my bone wil scarse cleue to my flesh. ⁶ I am be come lyke a Pellicane in the wildernes, and lyke an owle in a broken wal. ⁷ I wake, and am euen as it were a sparow sittinge alone vpon the house toppe. ⁸ Myne enemyes reuyle me all the daye longe, they laugh me to scorne, & are sworne together agaynst me. ⁹ I eate ashes with my bread, and myngle my drynke with wepynge.

³⁴ A frutefull lande maketh he baren, for the wickednesse of them that dwell therin.

⁹ And excepte the Lord of hostes had lefte vs a fewe alyue: we shulde haue ben as Sodoma, and lyke vnto Gomorra.

²³ Thy prynces are traytours and companyons of theues. They loue gyftes altogether, & folowe rewardes. As for the fatherles, they helpe hym not to hys ryght, nether wyll they let the wydowes causes come before them.

⁹ And so he sayde: go, and tell thys people: ye shall heare in dede, but ye shall not vnderstande, ye shall playnelye se, & not perceyue. ¹⁰ Harden the hart of thys people, stoppe theyr eares, and shutte theyr eyes, that they se not with theyr eyes, heare not wyth theyr eares, and vnderstande not wyth theyr hertes, and conuerte and be healed. ¹¹ Then spake I: Lorde, howe longe? he aunswered: vntyll the cytyes be vtterlye without inhabytours, and the houses wythoute men, tyll the lande be also desolate, & lye vnbuylded.

¹³ Neuertheles, the tenthe part shall remayne there in, for it shall conuerte and be frutefull. And lykewyse as the Terebyntes and Oketrees brynge forthe theyr frutes, so shall the holye sede haue frute.

¹⁸ But lo, as for me, and the children whiche the Lorde hath geuen me: we are a token and a wondre in Israel, for the Lorde of hostes sake, whiche dwelleth vpon the hill of Syon.

²² For thoughe thy people (O Israel) be as the sande of the sea, yet shall but the remnaunt of them onely conuerte vnto hym. Perfecte is the iudgement of hym that floweth in ryghteousnesse,

And shall discouer the shame of Egipt.

³ Yea miserably shall the worlde be wasted & clean destroied. For the Lorde hath so determed in him selfe.

¹⁷ And therfore (O thou that dwellest vpon the earth) there is at hand for the, feare, pyt and snare. ¹⁸ Who so escapeth the terrible crye, shal fal into the pyt. And yf he come out of the pit, he shalbe taken with the snare. For the wyndowes aboue shalbe opened, and the foundacion of the earth shall moue.

¹⁴ Wherfore heare the worde of the Lorde, ye mockers that rule the Lordes people, whiche is at Ierusalem. ¹⁵ For ye comforte youre selues thus: Tushe, death & we are at a poynte, and as for hell, we haue made a condicyon with it, that thoughe there breake out anye sore plage it shall not come vpon vs. For wyth disceyte wyll we escape, and with nymblenes wil we defende oure selues.

²² And therfore make no mockes at it, that youre captiuite increase not: for I haue hearde the Lorde of Hostes saye, that there shall come a soden destruccyon & plage vpon the whole earthe.

⁹ But ye shalbe at youre wyttes ende, ye shall be abashed, ye shall stackre, and rele to & fro. Ye shalbe droncken, but not of wyne. Ye shall fall, but not thorowe dronckennes. ¹⁰ For the Lorde shall geue you an harde slepynge spryte, and holde doune youre eyes: namelye youre Prophetes and heades which shuld se, them shall he couer. ¹¹ And all vysyons shalbe vnto you, as the wordes that stande in a sealed lettre, when one offereth it to a man that is learned, and sayeth: reade vs thys lettre. Then he aunswereth: I cannot read it, for it is shut. ¹² But yf it be geuen to one that is not learned, or sayd vnto him: reade this lettre: Then saith he: I can not reade.

¹ Wo be to those shrynkynge children (sayeth the Lorde) whiche seke councell, but not at me: whiche take a webbe in hande but not after my wil: that they may heape one synne vpon another.

⁹ For it is an obstynate people, vnfaythful children children that will not heare the lawe of the Lord.

¹⁹ But who is blinder, then my seruaunt? Or so deaf, as my messaungers, whom I sent vnto them? For who is so blinde as my people, & they that haue the rule of them? ²⁰ They are lyke, as yf thou vnderstodest moch, & keptest nothyng: or yf one herde well, but were not obedient.

¹¹ So the worde also that commeth oute of my mouthe shall not turne agayne voyde vnto me, but shall accomplysh my wil & prospere in the thinge, whereto I sende it.

¹⁰ The cytyes of thy Sanctuary lye waste, Sion is a wildernesse, and Ierusalem a deserte. ¹¹ Oure holy house whiche is oure bewty, where oure fathers praysed the, is brent vp: yea all oure commodities & pleasures are wasted awaye.

² For thus longe haue I euer holden out my handes to an vnfaithfull people, that go not the ryght waye, but after their owne ymaginacyons:

²⁴ Confusion hath deuoured oure fathers laboure from our youth vp: yea their shepe and bullockes, their sonnes and doughters. ²⁵ So do we also slepe in oure confusyon, and shame couereth vs: for we and oure fathers from oure youth vp vnto thys daye haue sinned agaynste the Lorde oure God, and haue not obeyed the voyce of the Lord oure God.

⁷ For the spoyler of the Gentyles is broken vp from his place, as a lyon oute of his denne, that he may make the land waste, and destroie the cities, so that noman maye dwell therin.

¹² They haue denyed the Lord, & sayde: it is not he. Tush, there shall no mysfortune come vpon vs, we shall se nether swerd nor hunger. ¹³ As for the warnynge of the Prophetes, they take it but for wynde, yea there is none of these, which wyll tell them, that suche thynges shall happen vnto them.

²¹ Heare thys (thou folyshe and vndiscrete people) ye haue eyes, but ye se not: eares haue ye, but ye heare not.

²³ But thys people hath a false and an obstinate herte, they are departed & gone awaye fro me.

⁷ Lyke as a conduyte aboundeth in water, euen so thys cytye aboundeth in wyckednes. Robberye and vnrightuousnesse is heard in her, sorow and woundes are euer there in my sight.

¹ O who wil geue my heade water ynough, and a wel of teares for myne eyes: that I may wepe night and day, for the slaughter of my people? ² Wold God that I had a cotage some where farre from folcke that I myghte leaue my people, & go from them for they be all aduoutrers and a shrynkynge sorte. ³ They bende theyr tunges lyke bowes, to shute oute lyes. As for the trueth, they may nothynge awaye with all in the worlde. For they go from one wyckednes to another, & hold nothinge of me, sayeth the Lorde. ⁴ Yea one must kepe him selfe from another no man maye safely truste his owne brother: for one brother vndermyneth another, & one neyghboure begyleth another. ⁵ Yea one dyssembleth with another, & they deale wyth no trueth. They haue practysed theyr tunges to lye, and taken greate paynes to do myschefe. ⁶ They haue set theyr stole in the myddest of dysceyte, and for very dyssemblynge falshede they wyll not knowe me, sayeth the Lorde.

¹⁰ Vpon the mountaynes wyl I take vp a lamentacyon and sorowfull crye, and a mournynge vpon the fayre playnes of the wyldernes: Namely, howe they are so brente vp, that no man goeth there anye more. Yea a man shall not heare one beaste crye there. Byrdes and catell are al gone from thence. ¹¹ I wyll make Ierusalem also an heape of stones, and a denne of venymous wormes. And I wyll make the cytyes of Iuda so wast, that no man shall dwell therein.

²² Beholde, the noyse is harde at hande, and greate sedycyon out of the north: to make the cytyes of Iuda a wyldernesse, and a dwellynge place for Dragons.

¹⁰ Dyuerse herdmen haue broken downe my vyneyarde, and troden vpon my porcyon. Of my pleasaunt porcion, they haue made a wyldernes & deserte. ¹¹ They haue layed it waste: and now that it is waste, it sygheth vnto me. Yee the whole lande lyeth waste, and no man regardeth it. ¹² The destroyers come ouer the heeth euery waye, for the swearde of the Lorde shall consume from the one ende of the lande to the other, & no flesh shall haue reste.

¹ Moreouer, thus sayde the Lorde vnto me: go thy waye, and gett the a lynen breche, and gyrde it aboute thy loynes, and let it not be wet. ² Then I got me a breche, accordynge to the commaundement of the Lorde, and put it about my loynes. ³ After this, the Lord spake vnto me agayn: ⁴ Take the breche that thou hast prepared and put aboute the, and gett the vp, and go vnto Euphrates, and hyde it in a hole of the rock. ⁵ So went I, and hydde it, as the Lorde commaunded me. ⁶ And it happened longe after this, that the Lorde spake vnto me: Vp, and get the to Euphrates, and fet the breche from thence, which I commaunded the to hyde there. ⁷ Then went I to Euphrates, & dygged vp, & toke the breche from the place where I had hyd it: & beholde, the breche was corrupt, so that it was profytable for nothinge. ⁸ Then sayde the Lorde vnto me: ⁹ Thus sayeth the Lord: Euen so wyll I corrupte the pryde of Iuda, & the hye mynde of Ierusalem. ¹⁰ This people is a wycked people, they wyll not heare my worde, they folowe the wicked ymagynacyons of their owne herte, & hange vpon straunge Goddes, them haue they serued & worshypped: & therfore they shalbe as this breche, that serueth for nothynge. ¹¹ For as straytelye as a breche lyeth vpon a mans loynes, so strately dyd I bynde the whol house of Israell, and the whole house of Iuda vnto me, sayeth the Lorde: that they myght be my people: that they myght haue a gloryous name: that they myght be in honoure: but they wolde not obeye me.

¹³ Then answerede I: O Lorde God, the prophetes saye vnto them: Tush, ye shal se no swearde, and no honger shall come vpon you, but the Lorde shall geue you continuall rest in this place. ¹⁴ And the Lorde sayde vnto me: The prophetes preach lyes vnto them in my name. I haue not spoken wyth them, nether gaue I them eny charge, nether dyd I sende them: yet they preach vnto you false visions, charming vanite, & disceytfulnesse of their owne herte. ¹⁵ Therfore thus saieth the Lorde: As for those prophetes that preache in my name (whom I neuertheles haue not sent) and that saye: Tush, there shall nether batell ner honger be in this lande: Wyth swearde and with honger shall those prophetes perysh, ¹⁶ and the people to whom they haue preached shalbe cast out of Ierusalem, dye of honger, and be slayne wyth the swearde (and there shallbe no man to burye them) buth they and their wyues, their sonnes and their daughters. For thus wyll I poure their wyckednes vpon them.

² And yf they saye vnto the: Whyther shall we go? Then tell them: The Lorde geueth you thys answere: Some vnto death, some to the swearde, some to honger, some in to captyuyte.

⁹ For thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes the God of Israell: Beholde, I shall take awaye out of this place, the voyce of myrth and gladnesse, the voyce of the brydegrome and of the bryde: yee & that in youre dayes, that ye maye se it.

² Aryse, and go downe into the Potters house, and there shall I tell the more of my mynde. ³ Now when I came to the Potters house, I founde hym makynge his worcke vpon a whele. ⁴ The vessell that the Potter made of claye, brake amonge hys handes: So he beganne a new, and made another vessell, accordynge to hys mynde. ⁵ Then sayde the Lorde thus vnto me: ⁶ Maye not I do with you, as this Potter doth, O ye house of Israel, sayeth the Lord? Beholde, ye house of Israell: ye are in my hande, euen as the claye in the Potters hande. ⁷ When I take in hande to rote out, to destroye, or to waste awaye eny people or kingdome: ⁸ yf that people (agaynst whom I haue this deuysed) conuerte from their wickednes: Immediatly, I repente of the plage, that I deuysed to brynge vpon them. ⁹ Agayne. When I take in hande, to buylde, or to plante a people or a kyngdome: ¹⁰ yf the same people do euell before me, and heare not my voyce: Immediatly, I repente of the good, that I deuyse to do for them. ¹¹ Speake now therfore vnto whole Iuda, and to them that dwell at Ierusalem: Thus sayeth the Lorde: Beholde, I am deuysynge a plage for you, and am takynge a thynge in hande agaynst you. Therfore let euery man turne from hys euell waye, take vpon you the thinge that is good, and do ryght. ¹² But they saye: No more of this, we wyll folowe oure owne ymagynacyons, and do euery man accordyng to the wylfulnesse of his owne mynde.

¹ Moreouer, thus sayde the Lorde vnto Ieremy: Go thy waye, and bye the an erthen pytcher, & bringe forthe the Senatours, & chefe preastes ² in to the valley of the chyldren of Hennon, which lieth before the porte that is made of bryck, & shewe them there the wordes, that I shall tell the, ³ & saye thus vnto them: Heare the worde of the Lorde, ye kynges of Iuda, and ye cytesyns of Ierusalem: Thus sayeth the Lord of Hostes the God of Israel: Beholde, I will bring soche a plage vpon this place, that the eares of all that heare it, shall glowe. ⁴ And that because they haue forsaken me, and vnhalowed this place, and haue offred in it vnto straunge goddes: whome nether they, their fathers, ner the kynges of Iuda haue knowne. They haue fylled this place also with the bloude of innocentes, ⁵ for they haue sett vp an aulter vnto Baall, to burne their children for a burntofferynge vnto Baall, which I nether commaunded, ner charged them, nether thought ones there vpon. ⁶ Beholde therfore, the time commeth (saieth the Lorde) that this place shall nomore be called. Topheth, ner the valley of the children of Hennom, but the valley of slaughter. ⁷ For in thys place wyll I slaye the Senatours of Iuda and Ierusalem, and kyll them downe with the swearde in the syght of their enemyes and of them that seke their lyues. And theyr deed carcases wyll I geue to be meate for the foules of the ayre, and beastes of the felde. ⁸ And I wyll make this cytie so desolate, and despysed, that who so goeth ther by, shall be abashed and ieast vpon her, because of al her plages. ⁹ I wyll fede them also with the fleshe of their sonnes and their daughters. Yee euery one shall eate vp another in the besegynge & straytnesse, wherwith their enemyes (that seke their lyues) shall kepe them in. ¹⁰ And the pytcher shalt thou breake in the syght of the men, that shalbe wyth the, and saye vnto them: ¹¹ Thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes: Euen so wyll I destroye thys people and cytie: as a Potter breaketh a vessell, that can not be made whole agayne. ⁷ And after this (sayeth the Lorde) I shall delyuer Zedekiah the kynge of Iuda, & hys seruauntes, his people (& soch as are escaped in the cytie, from the pestilence, swearde, and honger) in to the power of Nabuchodonosor kynge of Babylon: yee in to the handes of their enemyes, in to the handes of those that folowe vpon their lyues, whiche shall smyte them with the swearde: they shall not pytie them, they shall not spare them, they shall haue no mercye vpon them.

⁸ And all the people that go by this cytie, shall speake one to another: Wherfore hath the Lorde done thus vnto thys noble cytye? ⁹ Then shall it be answered: because they haue broken the couenaunt of the Lorde their God, & haue worshipped & serued straunge goddes.

¹⁴ I haue sene also amonge the Prophetes of Ierusalem foule aduouterye, and presumptuous lyes. They take the moste shamefull men by the hande, flatryng them, so that they can not returne from their wickednes. All these wyth their cytesyns are vnto me, as Sodom, and as the inhabitours of Gomorre. ¹⁵ Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes concernynge the prophetes: Beholde, I wyll fede them with wormwod, and make them dryncke the water of gall. For from the prophetes of Ierusalem is the sycknes and ypocrisye come in to all the lande. ¹⁶ And therfore the Lorde of Hostes geueth you this warnynge: Heare not the wordes of the prophetes, that preach vnto you, and disceyue you: for they speake the meanynge of their owne herte, and not out of the mouth of the Lorde. ¹⁷ They saye vnto them, that despyse me: The Lorde hath spoken it: Tush, ye shall prospere ryght well. And vnto all them, that walcke after the luste of their owne herte, they saye: Tushe, there shall no misfortune happen you. ¹⁸ For who hath sytten in the councell of the Lord, that he hath hearde and vnderstande, what he is aboute to do? Who hath marcked hys deuyce, and herde it? ¹⁹ Beholde, the stormy wether of the Lorde (that is his indignacyon) shall go forth, and shall fal downe vpon the head of the vngodlye. ²⁰ And the wrath of the Lorde shall not turne agayne, vntyll he perfourme and fulfull the thoughte of his herte. And in the latter dayes ye shall knowe his meanynge. ²¹ I haue not sent these Prophetes (sayeth the Lorde) and yet they ranne. I haue not spoken to them, and yet they preached. ²² But yf they had contynued in my councell and herde my wordes: they had turned my people from their euell wayes and wycked ymagynacyons. ²³ Am I then God that seyth but the thynge, whiche is nye at hande, and not that is farre of? Sayeth the Lorde. ²⁴ Maye eny man hyde hym self so, that I shal not se him? sayeth the Lorde. Do not I fulfyll heauen and earth? sayeth the Lorde. ²⁵ I haue herde well ynough, what the prophetes saye, that preache lyes in my name, sayinge: I haue dreamed, I haue dreamed. ²⁶ How longe wyll this continue in the prophetes hertes, to tell lyes, and to preach the craftye sotylete of their owne herte? ²⁷ Whose purpose is (wyth the dreames that euery one tell) to make my people forgete my name, as their forefathers dyd, when Baal came vp. ²⁸ The prophet that hath a dreame, let hym tell it: and he that vnderstandeth my worde, lett hym shewe it faythfully. For what hath chaffe and wheate to do together? sayeth the Lorde. ²⁹ Is not my worde lyke a fyre, sayeth the Lorde, and lyke an hammer, that breaketh the harde stone?

³³ If this people, ether eny prophet or preste aske the, and saye: what is the burthen of the Lorde? Thou shalt saye vnto them: What burthen? Therfore wyll I cast you fro me (sayeth the Lord) because ye youre selues are a burthen. ³⁴ And the prophet, preste or people that vseth this terme (the burthen of the Lord) hym wyll I viset, and hys house also. ³⁵ But thus shall ye saye, euery one to another: What answere hath the Lorde geuen? or, what is the Lordes commaundement? ³⁶ And as for the burthen of the Lorde, ye shall speake nomore of it: for euerye mans owne worde is his burthen, because ye haue altered the wordes of the lyuynge God the Lorde of Hostes oure God. ³⁷ Thus shall euerye man saye to the Prophetes: what answere hath the Lorde geuen the? Or, what sayeth the Lord? ³⁸ And not ones to name the burthen of the Lorde. Therfore thus sayeth the Lord: For so moch as ye haue vsed thys terme (the burthen of the Lorde) where as I not withstandinge sent vnto you and forbade you to speake of the Lordes burthen. ³⁹ Beholde therfore, I wyll repute you as a burthen, & will cast you out of my presence: yee and the cytie also, that I gaue you and youre fathers: ⁴⁰ & will brynge you to an euerlastynge confusyon, and in to soch a shame, as shall neuer be forgotten.

⁸ And lyke as thou knowest the naughtye fyges, whyche maye not be eaten, they are so euell: Euen so wyll I (sayeth the Lorde) lett Zedekiah the Kynge of Iuda (ye and all hys princes, and the resydue of Ierusalem that remayne ouer in this lande, and them also that dwell in Egypte) to be vexed & plaged in all kyngdomes & landes.

⁸ And lyke as thou knowest the naughtye fyges, whyche maye not be eaten, they are so euell: Euen so wyll I (sayeth the Lorde) lett Zedekiah the Kynge of Iuda (ye and all hys princes, and the resydue of Ierusalem that remayne ouer in this lande, and them also that dwell in Egypte) to be vexed & plaged in all kyngdomes & landes. ⁹ And wyll make them to be a reprofe, a comen by worde, a laughinge stocke and shame, in all the places, where I shall scatre them. ¹⁰ I wyll sende the swearde, honger & pestilence amonge them, vntyll I haue cleane consumed them out of the lande, that I gaue vnto them and their fathers.

⁴ Though the Lorde hath sent his seruauntes, all the prophetes vnto you in season: Yet wolde ye not obeye, ye wolde not enclyne youre eares to heare. ⁵ He sayde: turne agayne euery man from hys euell waye, & from your wicked ymaginacions, and so shall ye dwell for euer in the lande, that the Lorde promesed you & youre forefathers: ⁶ And go not after straunge goddes serue them not, worshipe them not, and angre me not wyth the worckes of youre handes: then wyll not I punish you. ⁷ Neuertheles, ye wolde not heare me (sayeth the Lorde) but haue defyed me with the worckes of youre handes, to youre owne greate harme.

⁹ lo, I wyll sende out, call for all the people, that dwell in the North, sayeth the Lorde, and will prepayre Nabuchodonosor the kynge of Babylon my seruaunt, and will bringe them vpon this lande, & vpon all that dwell therin, and vpon all the people that are aboute them, & will vtterly rote them oute. I wyll make of them a wyldernesse, a mockage and a continuall deserte.

³ yf (peraduenture) they wyll herken, and turne euery man from hys wycked waye: that I maye also repente of the plage, whiche I haue determed to brynge vpon them, because of theyr wycked inuencyons.

¹¹ For I am wyth the, to helpe the, sayeth the Lorde. And thoughe I shall destroye all the people, amonge whome I haue scatred the, yet wyll I not destroy the but correcte the, and that with dyscrecion. For I knowe, that thou arte in no wyse wythoute faute.

⁸ And so Hananeel myne vncles sonne came to me in the courte of the preson (according to the worde of the Lorde) and sayde vnto me: Bye my lande (I pray the) that lyeth in Anathoth in the countreye of Beniamin: for by heretage thou hast right to lowse it oute for thy selfe, therfore redeme it. Then I perceyued, that this was the commaundement of the lord, ⁹ and so I lowsed the lande from Hananeell of Anathoth, myne Vncles sonne, and weyed him there the moneye: euen seuen sycles, and ten syluer pens. ¹⁰ I caused him also to make me a writtinge and to seale it, and called recorde therby, and weyed him there the money vpon the waightes. ¹¹ So I toke the euydence with the copye (when it was orderly sealed and read ouer) ¹² and I gaue the euydence vnto Baruch the sonne of Neriah, the sonne of Maasiah in the sight of Hananeel my cosen, and in the presence of the witnesses, that be named in the euidence, and before all the Iewes that were therby in the courte of the preson.

²⁸ Therfore thus sayde the Lorde: beholde, I shall delyuer this cytie into the power of the Caldees, and into the power of Nabuchodonozor the kynge of Babilon, they shal take it in.

²² But thorowe my commaundement (sayeth the Lord) they shall come again before this cytye, they shall fyght agaynste it, winne it, and burne it. Moreouer I wyll laye the cities of Iuda so wast, that no man shal dwell therin.

³ That when the house of Iuda heareth of the plage whych I haue deuised for them, they may peraduenture turne, euery man from his wicked waye, that I maye forgeue their offences and synnes.

⁷ Peraduenture they will praye mekely before the face of the Lord, and turne euery one from his wicked waie. For greate is the wrath and displeasure, that the Lorde hath taken agaynst this people.

¹⁸ But yf thou wylt not go forth to the kynge of Babylons prynces, then shall this cytye be delyuered into the handes of the Caldees whiche shal set fyre vpon it, & thou shalt not be able to escape them.

² And in the .xi. year of Zedekiah, in the fourth Moneth, the .ix. day of the Moneth, he brake into the citie). ³ Then al the Princes of the king of Babilon came in, and sat them doune vnder the porte: Neregel, Sarezer, Samegarnabo, Sarsachim, Rabsaris, Neregel, Sarezer, Rabmah, with all the other princes of the king of Babilon. ⁴ And when Zedekiah the king of Iuda wt his soudiars saw them, they fled, and departed out of the citie by night thorow the kinges garden, & thorow the porte that is betwene the two walles, and so they went towarde the wildernesse.

⁷ So all the soudyers brake awaye, & fled out of the cytie by myght thorow the waye of the porte betwene the two walles by the kynges garden. Now the Caldees had compassed the cytie rounde aboute, yet wente these men their waye to warde the wyldernesse. ⁸ And so the Caldees folowed vpon them, & toke Zedekiah the kynge in the felde of Ierycho, when his hoost was runne from him. ⁹ So they caryed the kynge awaye presoner to Reblath, vnto the kynge of Babylon in the lande of Hemath, where he gaue iudgement vpon hym. ¹⁰ The kynge of Babylon also caused Zedekiahs sonnes to be slayne before his face, yee & put all the princes of Iuda to death at Reblath. ¹¹ Moreouer he put out the eyes of Zedekiah, caused hym to be bounde with chynes, to be caried vnto Babylon: and lett hym lye in preson, tyll he dyed.

¹⁵ As for the poore people and soch folcke as yet was left in the cytie, which also were fallen to the Kynge of Babylon, yee and what people as yet remayned: Nabuzaradan the chefe Captayne caryed them awaye presoners.

²⁸ Thys is the summe of the people, whom Nabuchodonosor ledde awaye captyue. In the seuenth yeare of hys reygne, he caried awaye of the Iewes, thre thousand and thre and twenty. ²⁹ In the .xviij. yeare. Nabuchodonosor caryed awaye from Ierusalem eight hundreth and .xxxij. personnes. ³⁰ In the .xxiij. yeare of Nabuchodonosor Nabuzaradan the chefe Captayne, toke awaye seuen hundreth .xlv. Iewes presoners. The whole summe of all the presoners, is foure thousand and syxe hundreth.

¹⁷ Phe The Lord hath fullfylled the thynge, that he was purposed to do: and perfourmed that he had dewysed longe a go: he hath destroyed and not spared. He hath caused thyne aduersary to triumphe ouer the, & set vp the horne of thyne enemye.

⁴⁷ Feare and snare is come vpon vs, yee despyte and destruccyon.

¹⁹ Koph. Oure persecuters are swyfter then the Aegles of the ayre, they folowed vpon vs ouer the mountaynes, and layed wayte for vs in the wildernesse. ²⁰ Res. The verye breth of oure mouth: euen the anoynted Lorde him self shalbe taken in oure synnes, of whom we saye: Vnder his shadowe we shalbe preserued amonge the Heythen.

³ And he sayde: Beholde, thou sonne of man: I wyll sende the to the chyldren of Israell, to those runnagates and obstynate people: for they haue taken parte agaynst me and are runne awaye fro me: both they and their forefathers vnto this daye.

⁵ that whether they be obedyent or no (for it is a frowarde housholde) they maye knowe yet that there hath bene a Prophet amonge them. ⁶ Therfore (thou sonne of man) feare them not, nether be afrayed of their wordes: for they shall rebell agaynst the, and despyse the. Yee thou shalt dwell amonge scorpions: but feare not their wordes, be not abashed at their lokes, for it is a frowarde housholde. ⁷ Se that thou speake my wordes vnto them, whether they be obedyent or not, for they are obstynate. ⁸ Therfore, thou sonne of men, obey thou all thynges, that I saye vnto the, and be not thou styfnecked, lyke as they are a styfnecked housholde. Open thy mouth and eate that I geue the.

²⁶ And I wyll make thy tunge cleue so to the rofe of thy mouth, that thou shalt be domme, and not be as a chyder wyth them: for it is an obstynate housholde. ²⁷ But when I speake vnto the, then open thy mouth, and saye: Thus sayeth the Lorde God: who so heareth, lett hym heare: who so wyll not, let hym leaue: for it is an obstynate housholde.

Then set thy face towarde it, besege it, and laye ordynaunce agaynst it, to wynne it. This shalbe a token vnto the house of Israel.

As for the false prophetes also & the vnclene spirit, I shal take them out of the land: ³ so that yf any of them prophecy any more, hys owne father and mother that begat him, shal saye vnto him: Thou shalt dye, for thou speakest lyes vnder the name of the Lord: yea his owne father and mother that begat him, shal wound him, when he prophecieth. ⁴ And then shal those prophetes be confounded, euery one of his vision when he prophecieth: neither shall they weer sackclothes any more, to disceyue men wt all.

And they haue slayne them, which shewed before of the comminge of the iuste whom ye haue nowe betrayed and mordred.

¹⁹ Wherfore kynge Agrippa I was not disobedient vnto the heauenly vision:

²⁶ and saye: wyth youre eares shall ye heare, & shall not vnderstande: and wyth youre eies shal ye se and shall not perceiue. ²⁷ For the hert of this people is waxed grosse and their eares were thicke of hearinge, and theyr eyes haue they closed: lest they should se with their eyes, and heare with their eares, and vnderstande with their hertes, and should be conuerted, and I should heale them.

²⁷ But Esayas cryeth concernynge Israell, thoughe the nomber of the chyldren of Israel be as the sande of the sea, yet shall a remnaunt be saued.

⁴ But what sayth the aunswere of God to hym agayne? I haue reserued vnto me seuen thousande men whiche haue not bowed the knee to Baal. ⁵ Euen so at thys tyme is there a remnaunte left thorow the election of grace.

⁷ What then? Israell hath not obtayned that, that he soughte. No but the electyon hath obtayned it. The remnaunte are blynded, ⁸ accordynge as it is wrytten. God hath geuen them the spirite of vnquyetnes: eyes that they should not se, and eares that they shoulde not heare euen vnto thys daye.

¹⁸ For they that are such, serue not the Lorde Iesus Christ: but theyr owne bellyes, and with swete preachynges & flatterynge wordes deceyue the hertes of the innocentes.
