¹ These are the sermons that were shewed vnto Amos (whiche was one of the shepeherdes at Thecua) vpon Israel, in the tyme of Osiah kynge of Iuda, and in the tyme of Ieroboam the sonne of Ioah kynge of Israel, two yeare before the earthquake. ² And he sayde: The Lorde shall roare oute of Syon, and shewe hys voyce from Ierusalem: so that the pastures of the shepherdes shalbe in a myserable case, and the tope of Charmell dryed vp. ³ Thus sayth the Lord: for thre & foure wyckednesses of Damascus, I wil not spare her, because they haue throshed Galaad with yron flales: ⁴ But I wyll sende a fyre into the house of Hazael, the same shal consume the palaces of Benadab. ⁵ Thus wyll I breake the barres of Damascus, and rote out the inhabyter from the felde of Auen, & hym that holdeth the scepter, out of the pleasaunt house: so that the people shalbe dryuen oute of fayre Syrya, sayeth the Lord. ⁶ Thus saith the Lord: For thre and foure wyckednesses of Gaza, I wyll not spare her: because they make the presoners yet more captyue, & haue driue them into the lande of Edom. ⁷ Therfore wyl I send a fyre into the walles of Gaza, whiche shall deuoure her houses. ⁸ I wyl rote out them the dwel at Asood & hym the holdeth the scepter of Ascalon, and stretche oute myne hande ouer Accaron, that the remnaunte of the Phylystines shal peryshe sayth the Lorde. ⁹ Thus sayeth the Lorde: For thre and foure wyckednesses of the cytye of Tyre, I wil not spare her, because they haue increased the captyuite of the Edomytes, and haue not remembred the brotherly couenaunt. ¹⁰ Therfore wil I sende a fyre into the walles of Tyre, that shal consume her palaces. ¹¹ Thus sayth the Lorde: For thre and foure wickednesses of Edom I wyl not spare him, because he persecuted hys brother wyth the swearde, destroyed his mothers wombe, bare hatred very longe, and so kepte indignacyon alwaye by hym. ¹² Therfore wyll I sende a fyre into Theman, which shal deuoure the palaces of Bosra. ¹³ Thus sayeth the Lorde: For thre and foure wyckednesses of the children of Ammon I wil not spare them, because they rypte vp the wemen greate with childe in Galaad, to make the borders of theyr landes the wyder. ¹⁴ Therefore I wyl kyndle a fyre in the walles of Rabbath that shal consume her palaces: with a great crie, in the daye of batel, in tempest & in the daye of storme, ¹⁵ so that their kinge shall go into captyuyte he and hys prynces together, sayeth the Lorde.

⁴⁰ And with thy swerd shalt thou liue, & shalt be thy brothers seruaunt. But the time wil come, when thou shalt get the mastry, & louse hys yocke from of thy necke. ⁴¹ And Esau hated Iacob, bicause of the blessyng that hys father blessed hym with all, & sayed in hys hert. The dayes of my fathers sorowes are at hand, for I wyll slea my brother Iacob.

¹¹ And the sonnes of Eliphas were. Theman, Omar, Zepho, Gaetham and Kenas.

³³ And when Bela dyed, Iobab the sonne of Serah oute of Bezara, reigned in his steade.

¹ Moyses kepte the sheepe of Iethro hys father in lawe prieste of Madian, and he droue the flocke to the backesyde of the deserte, and came to the mountayne of God, Horeb.

¹⁴ And Moses sente messengers from Cades vnto the kyng of Edom. Thus sayeth thy brother Israel. Thou knowest al the trauel that hath happened vs, ¹⁵ how our fathers went downe into Egypt, and how we haue dwelt in Egypt a longe tyme, and how the Egypcians vexed both vs and our fathers. ¹⁶ Then we cried vnto the Lorde and he hearde oure voyces, and sent an angell & hath fet vs oute of Egypte. And beholde, we are in Cades a city harde by the borders of thy contry ¹⁷ let vs go a good felowshype thorow thy contrey we wil not go thorow thi feldes nor thorow the viniyardes, neither wyl we drinke of the water of the fountaynes, but we wyll go vp the hye way, & neyther turne vnto the righte hand nor to the lift, vntyl we be past thy contrye. ¹⁸ And Edom answered him: Se thou come not by me, least I come out against the with the swerde. ¹⁹ And the chyldren of Israel sayed vnto him: we wyl go by the beaten way: and if eyther we or our cattell drynke of thy water, we wyll pay for it, we wyll do no more but passe thorow by fote onelye. ²⁰ And he said ye shal not go thorow. And Edom came out against hym with much people and wyth a mighty power. ²¹ And thus Edom denied to giue Israel passage thorow his contrie. And Israel turned away from him.

⁴ And warne the people saying Ye shall go thorow the costes of youre brethren the chyldren of Esau whyche dwell in Seir, and they shalbe afrayed of you: But take good heade vnto youre selues ⁵ that ye prouoke them not, for I wyl not geue you of their lande, no not so moch as a fote breade: because I haue geuen mount Seir vnto Esau to possesse. ⁶ Ye shal bye meate of them for money to eate, and ye shall bye water of them for money to drinke. ⁷ For the Lord thy God hath blessed the in al the workes of thyne hand & knewe the as thou wentest thorowe thys great wyldernesse. Moreouer the Lorde thy God hath bene wt the this .xl. yeres, so that thou hast lacked nothyng. ⁸ And when we were departed from our brethren the chyldren of Esau whyche dwelt in Seir by the feld way from Elath and Ezion Gaber, we turned and went the waye to the wyldernesse of Moab.

¹⁹ & shalt come nye vnto the children of Ammon: se that thou vexe them not, nor yet prouoke them. For I wil not geue the of the land of the children of Ammon to possesse,

¹¹ For only Og king of Basan remayned of the remnaunt of the geauntes: behold, his yron bed is yet at Rabah among the children of Ammon .ix. cubytes longe & .iiij. cubites brode, of the cubites of a man.

³ The Ammonites and the Moabites shall not come in to the congregacyon of the Lord, no not in the tenth generacion, no they shall neuer come in to the congregacyon of the Lorde, ⁴ because they met you not wyth bread and water in the waye when ye came out of Egypt, & because they hyred agenst the Balaam the sonne of Beor the interpreter of Mesopotamia, to curse the.

⁷ Thou shalt not abhorre an Edomite, for he is thy brother: nether shalt thou abhorre an Eygpcian, because thou waste a straunger in his lande.

³⁵ Vengeaunce is mine, and I wyll reward: theyr fete shall slyde, when the tyme cometh. For the tyme of theyr destruccion is at hand, & the tyme that shal come vpon them maketh hast.

⁴¹ If I whett the edge of my swerd, & mine hand take in hand to do iustice, I wil shewe vengeaunce on myne enemyes & wyl reward them that hate me. ⁴² I wyl make myne arowes dronken with bloud, and my swerde shal eate fleshe of the bloude of the slayne & of the captyue and of the bare head of the enemy. ⁴³ Prayse ye heathen hys people, for he wil auenge the bloude of hys seruauntes, & wyl auenge hym of his aduersaries, and wyll be merciful vnto the land of hys people.

¹⁹ yf then ye haue dealte purelye and truelye wyth Ierobaal & wyth hys house this day: then reioyce ye in Abimelech, and let hym also reioyce in you. ²⁰ But yf you haue not dealte trulye, then I praye God a fyre maye come oute of Abymelech & consume the cytezens of Sichem and the house of Mello. And that there come a fyre out of the cytezens of Sichem, and oute of the house of Mello, and consume Abimelech.

⁵⁷ & therto al the wyckednesse of the men of Sichem, God dyd bryng vpon theyr heades: And vpon them came the curse of Ioatham the sonne of Ierobaal.

⁷ And the Lord was wroth wyth Israell, & solde them into the handes of the Philistines, and into the handes of the chyldren of Ammon: ⁸ which pyld & oppressed the chyldren of Israel in those dayes .xviij. yeare, all that were on the other syde Iordan in the lande of the Amorytes in Galaad. ⁹ Moreouer the chyldren of Ammon went ouer Iordan to fyghte agaynste Iuda, Beniamin, and the house of Ephraim: so that Israel was sore combred.

¹⁵ & sayde vnto hym: thus sayth Iephthah. Israel toke not awaye the lande of Moab, nor the land of the chyldren of Ammon. ¹⁶ But when Israel came out of Egypt, they walked thorow the wyldernesse, euen vnto the red sea & came to Cades, ¹⁷ & sente messengers vnto the kynge of Edom sayinge: let vs we praye the go thorow thy lande. But the kynge of Edom wolde not agre therto. And in lyke maner they sente vnto the Kynge of Moab, but he wolde not consent. And so Israel abode styll in Cades. ¹⁸ And then they wente a longe thorowe the wildernesse, and compased the lande of Edom, & the lande of Moab, and came a longe by the eastsyde of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other syde the riuer of Arnon, and came not wythin the coastes of the Moabites: for Arnon was their vtmost border. ¹⁹ And then Israel sent messengers vnto Sehon, Kynge of the Amorites, and Kynge of Hesbon, and said vnto him: Let vs passe thorow thy land vnto our owne countreye. ²⁰ But Sehon trusted not Israel, to go thorow hys coastes, but gathered all his people together and pytched in Iazah, and fought wyth Israell. ²¹ But the Lord God of Israel delyuered Sehon and al his folcke into the handes of Israel. And so Israel smote them and conquered al the lande of the Amorites, the enhabiters of the sayde countreye. ²² And they conquered al the coastes of the Amorites, from Arnon vnto Iabok, and from the wyldernesse vnto Iordan. ²³ So now seyng the Lorde God of Israel hath cast out the Amorites before his people, shouldeste thou possesse the land? ²⁴ Naye, but what people Camos thy God dryueth out, that land possesse thou. But whatsoeuer nacyons the Lorde oure God expelleth, that land ought we to enioye. ²⁵ And therto art thou better then Balack the sonne of Zephor Kynge of Moab? dyd he stryue wyth Israell or fyghte againste them? ²⁶ all the wyle Israell dwelte in Hesbon and her tounes, and in Aroer and her tounes, and in all the cytyes that be a longe by the coastes of Arnon .iij. hundred yeres? why dydest thou not recouer them in all that space, ²⁷ wherfore I haue not synned agaynste the. But thou doest me wronge, to warre agaynste me. The Lorde therfore be iudge this daye, betwene the chyldren of Israel, and the children of Ammon. ²⁸ How be it the Kynge of the children of Ammon harkened not vnto the wordes of Iephthah, which he sent him.

¹⁷ These are the golden arsses with Emerodes whiche the Philistines gaue to amendes for a trespace offeryng, to the Lord: for Asdod one: for Gaza one: for Askalon one: for Geth one: & for Akaron one.

¹ Then Nahas the Ammonite came & beseged Iabes in Galaad. And al the people of Iabes sayd vnto Nahas: make a couenaunte wyth vs & we wylbe thy seruauntes. ² And Nahas the Amonite said: herto will I make a couenaunt wt you, euen to thrust oute all youre ryght eyes, that I may bring that shame vpon al Israel.

² And there was a man in Maon, whose catel was in Carmell, and the man was excedynge myghtye, and had thre thousand shepe and a thousande gootes. And he was sheringe his shepe in Carmel.

¹¹ And Hiram Kynge of Tyre sent messengers to Dauid wyth Cedar trees and carpenters & Masons, to buyld Dauid an house.

¹ It happened after this, that the kynge of the chyldren of Amnon dyed, & Hanon his sonne raygned in hys steade. ² Then sayde Dauid: I wyl shew kyndnesse vnto Hanon the sonne of Nahas, as hys father shewed kyndnesse vnto me. And thervpon Dauid sente to conforte hym by the hande of hys seruauntes ouer the death of hys father. Now when Dauids seruauntes were come into the land of the chyldren of Amnon: ³ the Lordes of the chyldren of Amnon sayde vnto Hanon theyr Lorde: thynkest thou that Dauid doth honoure thy father, because he hath sent to comfort the? Naye, he hath rather sent hys seruauntes vnto the, to searche the cytye and to spye out, euen to ouerthrow it. ⁴ Wherfore Hanon toke Dauids seruauntes and shaued of the one halfe of euerye mannes bearde & cut of theyr garmentes euen in the myddle, euen harde by the buttockes of them and sent them awaye. ⁵ When it was tolde Dauid he sent against them (for they were men excedyngly ashamed) & saide: tarye at Iericho vntyll your beerdes be growen, & then returne. ⁶ And when the chyldren of Amnon sawe that they stancke vnto Dauid, they sent & hyred the sonnes of Bethrehob & of the Syryans of Zobah .xx. thousande fote men & of kyng Maacah a thousande men, & of Istob twelue thousande men. ⁷ And when Dauid hearde of it, he sent Ioab & all the host of strong men. ⁸ And the chyldren of Amnon came out & waged battell before the gate & the Syryens of Zobah, of Rehob, Istob and Maacah were by themselues in the feldes.

²⁶ And as Ioab fought agaynst Rahab the cytye of the chyldren of Amnon he toke the kynges toure,

² he sent to Thekoa, and fet thence a wyse woman, and sayde vnto her: feyne thy selfe to be a mourner, and put on mournyng apparell. And annoynt not thy selfe wyth oyle. But be as a woman that had long tyme mourned for the death of some bodye.

¹ And Hiram kynge of Tyre sente hys seruauntes vnto Salomon, for he had hearde that they had anoynted hym kyng in the roume of hys father. And therto Hiram was euer a louer of Dauids. ² And Salomon sent agayne to Hiram, sayinge: ³ thou knowest of Dauid my father, howe he could not build an house vnto the name of the Lorde his god for warre which he had on euery syde, vntyll the Lorde had put them vnder hys fote. ⁴ But nowe the Lorde my God hath geuen me rest on euery syde, so that there is neyther aduersarye nor any euyll plage. ⁵ And therfore I am disposed to buylde an house vnto the name of the Lorde my God, as he promysed Dauid my father, saying: thy sonne which I wyl put vpon thy seate for the, he shal buylde an house vnto my name. ⁶ Nowe then commaunde that they hewe me Cedar trees in Libanon. And let my seruauntes be with thine, and I will geue the hire of the seruauntes in all soche thinges as thou shalt appoynte, for thou knowest that there are not among vs that can skyll to hewe tymber lyke vnto the Sidones. ⁷ When Hiram hearde the wordes of Salomon, he reioysed greatlye & sayde: Blessed be the Lorde this daye whiche hath set Dauid a wyse sonne ouer this myghtie people. ⁸ And Hiram sent agayne to Salomon saying: I haue accept the request whiche thou sentest to me for, & wyll satisfye all thy luste, concernynge tymbre of Cedar trees & fyre. ⁹ My seruauntes shall brynge them from Lybanon to the sea. And I wyll conueye them by shippe vnto the place that thou shalt sende me worde, & wyll cause them to be discharged there, that thou mayst receyue them. And thou shalt do me this pleasure agayne, to mynistre fode for myne house. ¹⁰ And so Hiram gaue Salomon Cedar trees & fyrre trees, as moche as he desyred. ¹¹ And Salomon gaue Hiram twentie thousand quarters of wheate to fede his housholde wt al, & twentye buttes of pure oyle. And so moch gaue Salomon to Hiram yere by yere.

¹¹ because Hyram the kynge of Tyre had supported hym with Cedar, fyre & gould, as much as he desyred: therfore Salomon gaue Hiram .xx. cytyes in the lande of Galyle. ¹² And when Hiram was come from Tyre to se the cytyes which Salomon had geuen him, they pleased hym not. ¹³ Wherfore he sayd: what cytyes are these whiche thou hast geuen me, my brother? and he called them the land of Cabul vnto thys daye. ¹⁴ This Hiram had sent the kyng .vi. skore hundred wayght of gould.

¹⁵ Then the Lorde sayde vnto hym: go and turne thy waye to the wyldernesse of Damasco, and go and annoynte Hazael to be kynge of Siria.

¹⁷ And who so eskapeth the swerde of Hazael, hym shall Iehu slaye: and yf any man scape the swerde of Iehu, hym shall Elizeus slaye.

¹⁹ And he departed thence, and founde Elizeus the sonne of Saphat plowinge wyth twelue yocke of oxen before him, and he with the twelue. And Eliah went to hym and cast his mantel vpon him.

¹ And Benhadad kynge of Siria gathered al his hoste together, and .xxxij. kinges wyth hym, with horse and charet, and went vp and beseged Samaria, and warred agaynst it. ² And he sent messengers to Ahab kinge of Israel into the citie, and sayde vnto him: thus sayth Benhadad: ³ Thy siluer & goulde is myne, and the best of thy wyues, and the best of thy children be myne. ⁴ And the kinge of Israel answered and saide: my lorde kinge accordinge to thy sayinge: I am thyne with all I haue. ⁵ And the messengers came agayne to Ahab and sayde: thus saith Benhadad: I haue therfore sent vnto the, sayinge: delyuer then thy syluer and thy goulde, and thy wiues, and thy children. ⁶ Or else I wil sende my seruauntes vnto the by to morow this tyme: & they shal cherse thyne house, and the houses of thy seruauntes, whiche shall take all that is glorious in thyne eyes, and brynge it awaye wt them. ⁷ Then the kynge of Israel sent for the elders of the lande and sayed: take hede I pray you, and se, howe this felowe goeth aboute myscheue. For he sent vnto me, for my wiues and my children, & my siluer and my goulde, and I denyed him nothinge of it. ⁸ And all the elders of Israel and all the people sayde: herken not to him, nor consent. ⁹ Whervpon he sayde vnto the messengers of Benhadad: tell my Lorde the kinge, al that he sent for the fyrst tyme, that I wyll do: but this request I maye not do. And the messengers departed and brought hym worde. ¹⁰ Then Benhadad sent vnto him and said: thus do the Gods to me and so therto, yf the dust of Samaria be ynough for al the people that folow me, that euery man maye haue an handfull. ¹¹ And the kynge of Israel answered and sayd: tell hym, let not him that putteth on hys harnesse bost him self, as he that putteth it of. ¹² And when Benhadad hearde that tidinges, as he and the kinges were drinckinge in the pauilions, he sayde vnto his seruauntes: put ye in araye. And they put them selues in araye against the cytye. ¹³ And beholde there came a Prophet vnto Ahab kynge of Israel, and saide to him: thus sayth the Lorde: Seyst thou all this greate multitude? beholde, I will delyuer them into thyne hande this daye, that thou mayest knowe that I am the Lorde. ¹⁴ And Ahab sayde: by whome? And he sayd: thus sayeth the Lorde: euen by the men of the gouernoures of the shires And Ahab sayde: who shall ioyne batayle? And he sayde: thou. ¹⁵ Then he nombred the men of the gouerners of the shires: and they were two hundred and .xxxij. And after them he nombred al the people, and al the children of Israel were seuen thousand. ¹⁶ And they went out at none when Benhadad was drinckynge stronge dryncke in the pauilions with the two and thyrtye kynges that holpe hym. ¹⁷ And the men of the shrifes of the shires went out fyrste. And Benhadad sent out, and they shewed him saying: there came men out e Samaria. ¹⁸ And he sayd: yf they come out of for peace, take them aliue. And also yf they come for warre take them yet alyue. ¹⁹ And when those men of the shrifes of the shires were come out of the citie and the host after them, they slue euery one of them his man. ²⁰ And the Siriens fled, and Israel folowed after them. And Benhadad the kinge of Siria scaped on a horsse with hys horsemen. ²¹ And the kinge of Israel went out and smote horsse and charet, & slue a great slaughter of the Sirians. ²² Then there came a Prophete to the kinge of Israel, and sayde to him: go forth and play the man, be wyse & take hede what thou doest for when the yeare is about, the kinge of Siria will come against the agayne.

²⁴ After this Benhadad kyng of Syrya gathered al the hoste, and went & beseged Samaria.

⁷ After that Elizeus went to Damasco, Benhadad the kinge of Syrya beynge sycke. And one tolde the kynge, sayinge: The man of God is come hyther. ⁸ Then sayde the kynge to Hazael: take a present wyth the and go againste the man of God, and aske the Lorde by hym whether I shal recouer of thys my dysease or no. ⁹ And Hazael went to mete hym, & toke presentes wyth hym, euen of al the good thinges of Damasco, as muche as fourtye Cameles coulde beare, and came and presented himselfe before hym and sayde: thy sonne Benhadad Kynge of Syrya hath sent me to the, sayinge: shall I recouer of thys my dysease. ¹⁰ And Elizeus sayde to hym: go, and saye to hym: thou shalte recouer, howe be it the Lord hath shewed me that he shall surelye dye. ¹¹ And the man of God beganne to loke earnestlye, in so muche that he was ashamed: and the man of God wept. ¹² And Hazael sayd: why wepeth my Lorde: And he aunswered: for I knowe that thou shalte do euyll vnto the chyldren of Israel: theyr stronge cytyes thou shalte set on fyre & theyr younge men thou shalte sleye with the swerde, and shalte dashe oute the braynes of theyr suckynge chyldren, and all to teare their wemen wyth chylde.

¹² And Hazael sayd: why wepeth my Lorde: And he aunswered: for I knowe that thou shalte do euyll vnto the chyldren of Israel: theyr stronge cytyes thou shalte set on fyre & theyr younge men thou shalte sleye with the swerde, and shalte dashe oute the braynes of theyr suckynge chyldren, and all to teare their wemen wyth chylde. ¹³ And Hazael sayde: what is thy seruaunte which am but a dogge, that I shulde do thys great thyng? And Elizeus sayde: for the Lord hath shewed me, that thou shalte be kynge of Syrya. ¹⁴ And so he departed from Elizeus and came to hys mayster, whiche sayde to hym. What sayde Elizeus to the? And he sayd: he tolde me that thou shuldest recouer. ¹⁵ And on the morowe he toke a rough clothe and dypte it in the water and sprede it on hys face, & he dyed, and Hazael raygned in hys steade.

³² In those dayes the Lorde beganne to cut Israel shorte, for Hazael slue them in all the coastes of Israell, ³³ from Iordan Eastwarde: euen al the lande of Galaad, the Gadites, the Rubenites and the Manassites, from Aroer vpon the ryuer of Arnon, with Galaad and Basan.

³ Wherfore the Lorde was angrye with Israel, and delyuered them into the hande of Hazael kynge of Syrya, and into the hande of Benhadad the sonne of Hazael all theyr dayes.

⁷ But there were left of the people to Iehoahaz, but fyfty horsmen and ten charettes, & ten thousand fotemen, for the kynge of Syrya had destroyed them and made them lyke threshed chaffe.

²⁵ And then Ioas the sonne of Iehoahaz went agayne, & toke oute of the hand of Benhadad sonne of Hazael, the cytyes which he had taken awaye oute of the handes of Iehoahaz hys father, with warre. And thre tymes dyd Ioas beate hym, and brought the cytyes of Israel agayne.

²¹ And al the people of Iuda toke Azariah, which was .xvi. yeare old, & made hym kyng for his father Amaziah.

²³ The .xv. yeare of Amaziah sonne of Iehoas kynge of Iuda, was Ieroboam sonne of Ioas made kynge ouer Israel in Samaria, & raygned .xli. yeare,

⁹ And the king of Assyrya herkened to hym, and went to Damasco, and toke it, and caried the people away to Kir, and slue Razin.

⁸ He bet the Philistines euen vnto Azah and the coastes thereof, bothe in castels of garysons and stronge cytyes to.

² And the Lorde sent vpon hym men of warre oute of Caldey, out of Siria, oute of the Moabites, & from the children of Ammon: and sent them into Iuda, to destroye it, accordyng to the sayinge of the Lorde whiche he spake by hys seruauntes the Prophetes.

⁸ And sende me also Cedar trees, fyrre trees, & Algume trees out of Lybanon. For I wote well thy seruauntes can skylle to hew timbre in Lybanon. And se, my men shalbe wyth thyne, ⁹ that they may prepare me tymbre ynough. For the house which I builde is great & wonderfull. ¹⁰ And beholde, I sente for thy seruauntes the cutters and hewers of tymbre .xx. thousande quarters of beaten whete, & .xx. thousande quarters of barleye, & .xx. thousande bathes of wyne, & .xx. thousand bathes of oyle. ¹¹ And Hyram kynge of Tyre aunswered in wrytynge & sente to Salomon: because the Lord loueth hys people, therfore he hath made the kyng ouer them. ¹² And Hiram sayde moreouer: blessed be the Lord God of Israel which hath made bothe heauen and earth, that he hath geuen Dauid the kynge a wyse sonne that hath discrecyon and vnderstandynge, to buylde an house for the Lorde, and auother for his kingdome. ¹³ And nowe I haue sente a wyse man & a man of vnderstandyng called Hyram Abi, ¹⁴ and is the sonne of a woman of the doughters of Dan (howe be it, hys father was a Tiryan) and he can skylle to worke in gould, syluer, brasse, yron, stone, tymbre, scarlet, Iacinct bysse & cremosyn: and graue all maner of grauynges, & to fynde oute all maner sotle worck that shalbe set before hym, wyth thy conning men, and with the conning men of my Lorde Dauid thy father. ¹⁵ And now the whete, barleye, oyle and wyne whiche my Lorde hath sayde: let hym sende hys seruauntes. ¹⁶ And we wyll cut wood oute of Lybane, as muche as thou shalte nede, and wyll brynge it to the in shippes by the sea to porte Iapo: & thence thou mayest carye them to Ierusalem.

And his name spreade farre abroade, for he was wonderflye holpe, vntyl he was become myghtye. ¹⁶ And in his greatnesse hys hert arose, that he was marred: & transgressed against the Lord his God. For he went into the temple of the Lorde to burne cense vpon the aulter of incense. ¹⁷ But Asariah the prieste went in after him with foure skore priestes of the Lorde that were bolde men. ¹⁸ And they stepte to Oziah the kynge & sayde to him: it pertayneth not to the Oziah to burne cense vnto the Lorde, but to the priestes the children of Aaron that are consecrate for to burne incense. Come out of the sanctuarye, for thou hast trespaced, and it shalbe no worshepe to the before the Lorde God. ¹⁹ And Oziah was wroth and had cense in hys hande to offer, and in hys indignacyon agaynste the prieste, the leprosye sprange in his forhead the priestes in the house of the Lorde, euen besyde the incense aulter. ²⁰ And Asariah the chefe priest with al the other priestes loked vpon him: and beholde he was a leper in his forhead, & they vexed him thence. And therto he was fayne to go oute, because the Lord had plaged him. ²¹ And Oziah the kynge continued a lepre vnto the daye of his death & dwelte in an house at lybertie: howe be it, he was cast out of the house of the Lord. And Ionatham his sonne had the gouernaunce of the kynges house & iudged the people of the lande. ²² The rest of the actes of Oziah both fyrste and last, did Isaiah the prophete the sonne of Amos write. ²³ And when Oziah was layde to rest with his fathers, they buryed him wt his fathers in the felde of the burial of the kinges. For they sayde: he is a leper. And Ioatham his sonne raygned in his steade.

¹⁹ But when Senabalat the Horonite, and Tobiah the seruaunte of the Ammonites, and Gesem the Arabian hearde it, they laughed vs to skorne, and despysed vs, & sayde: what is thys that ye do? Wyll ye fall away againe from the kynge?

⁷ But when Sanabalat, and Tobiah, & the Arabians, and Ammonites, and Asdodites hearde that the walles of Ierusalem were made vp, and that they had begonne to stoppe vp the gappes they were very wroth, ⁸ and conspyred all together to come & fyghte agaynste Ierusalem, and to make an hinderaunce there in. ⁹ Neuertheles we made our prayer vnto our God, and set watchemen vpon the wall daye & nyght ouer agaynst them. ¹⁰ And Iuda sayd: the strength of the bearers is to feble, & there is to muche duste, we are not able to buylde on the wall. ¹¹ And oure aduersaryes thoughte: they shall not knowe nether se, tyll we come in the myddes amonge them, and slaye them and hynder the worcke. ¹² But when the Iewes that dwelt besyde them, came out of al the places where they dwelt aboute vs, and tolde vs as good as ten tymes, ¹³ then set I the people after theyr kinredes with their swerdes, speares and bowes beneth in the lowe places behynde the wal, ¹⁴ and loked, and gat me vp, and sayde vnto the chefe men and rulers, & to the other people: be not ye afraied of them thinke vpon the greate Lord, which ought to be feared and fyghte for youre brethren, sonnes, doughters, wyues, and houses. ¹⁵ Neuertheles when oure enemyes hearde, that we had gotten worde of it, God broughte their councell to nought, and we turned all agayue to the wall, euery one vnto his laboure. ¹⁶ And from that tyme forth it came to passe, that the halfe parte of the younge men dyd the laboure, and the other halfe parte helde the speares, shyldes, bowes, and brestplates: and the rulers stode behynde all the house of Iuda, ¹⁷ whyche buylded on the wall, and bare burthens, from those that laded them. Wyth one hande dyd they the worke, and wyth the other held they theyr weapen. ¹⁸ And euerye one that buylded, had hys swerde gyrde by hys syde, and so buylded they. And the trompetters stode besyde me. ¹⁹ And I sayde vnto the pryncipall men, and rulers, and to the other people: the worcke is greate and large, and we are separated vpon the wall one farre from another. ²⁰ Loke in what place now ye heare the noyse of the trompet, resorte ye thether vnto vs. Oure God shall fyght for vs, ²¹ and we wyl be labouring in the worcke. And the halfe parte of them helde the speares from the morninge springe, tyll the starres came forth. ²² And at the same time saide I vnto the people: euery one abyde wyth hys seruaunt at Ierusalem, that in the nyght season we maye geue attendannce to the watche, and to laboure on the daye tyme. ²³ As for me and my brethren, and my seruauntes, and the men of the watche behynde me, we put neuer of oure clothes, so muche as to washe oure selues.

¹⁵ Persecute them euen so with thy tempest, and make them afrayed with thy storme.

⁵ Wylt thou be dyspleased at vs for euer? wylt thou stretch out thy wrath from one generacyon to another?

¹ O Lorde God, to whome vengeaunce belongeth: thou God to whome vengeaunce belongeth shewe thy self. ² Aryse thou iudge of the world & rewarde the proude after their deseruyng. ³ Lorde how longe shall the vngodly, how longe shall the vngodly triumphe? ⁴ How longe shall all wicked doers speake so disdaynfully, and make such proude boastynge? ⁵ They smyte doune thy people, O Lorde, and trouble thine heritage.

For then shal they laye vp nothinge behind them, nor vpon heapes: but the marchaundyse of Tyrus shall belong vnto the cytesins of the Lorde, to the feadynge and susteninge of the hungrye, and to the clothinge of the aged.

³⁰ The Lorde also shall set vp the power of his voyce, and declare his terryble arme, wyth hys angry countenaunce yea and the flamme of the consumynge fyre, with earthquake, tempest of wynde, and haile stones.

For God shall sprede out the lyne of desolacyon vpon it, and weye it with the stones of emptynes. ¹² When kinges are called vpon there shalbe none, and all prynces shalbe awaye. ¹³ Thornes shall growe in their palaces, nettels and thistles in theyr stronge holdes, that the dragons maye haue their pleasure therin, and that they maye be a courte for Estriches. ¹⁴ There shall straunge visures and monstruous beastes mete one another, and the wilde kepe companye together. There shall the lamya lye, and haue her lodginge. ¹⁵ There shall the hedghoge buylde, digge, be there at home, and brynge forth hys younge ones. There shall the kytes come together, ech one to his lyke. ¹⁶ Seke thorow the scrypture of the Lorde & rede it. There shall none of these thynges be left out, there shall not one (ner soche lyke) fayle. For what his mouth commaundeth, that same doth hys sprete gather together (or fulfylleth.) ¹⁷ Vpon whom soeuer the lot falleth, or to whom he dealeth it with the lyue: those shall possesse the enheritaunce from generacyon to generacyon, and dwell therin.

² She shall floryshe pleasauntlye, & be ioyfull, & euer be geuyng of thanckes more and more. For the glory of Libanus, the bewty of Charmel and Saron shalbe geuen her. These shall knowe the honour of the Lorde, and the magestie of oure God.

Thus haue I troden doune myne enemyes in my wrath, and set my fete vpon them in my indignacyon. And their bloude sprange vpon my clothes, and so haue I stayned al my raiment. ⁴ For the day of vengeaunce that I haue taken in hande, and the yeare of my delyueraunce is come. ⁵ I loked aboute me, and there was noman to shewe me any helpe, I fell doune, & no man helde me vp. Then I held me by myne owne arme, and my feruentnesse susteyned me: ⁶ and thus haue I troden doune the people in my wrath, and bathed them in my displeasure: In so muche that I haue shed their bloude vpon the earth. ⁷ I wyl declare the goodnesse of the Lorde, yea and the prayse of the Lorde for all that he hath geuen vs, for the great good that he hath done for Israel: whyche he hath geuen them of hys owne fauoure, and accordynge to the multytude of hys louynge kyndnesses.

¹ These are the Sermons of Ieremy the sonne of Helkiah the prieste, one of them that dwelt at Anathoth in the land of Beniamin:

¹ Come out of Ierusalem, ye strong children of Ben Iamin: blowe vp the trompettes ye Tecuytes, set vp a token vnto Bethcarem, for a plage and a greate myserye pepeth oute from the Northe.

¹⁸ But fyrst the cytie of Ierusalem, and all the cytyes of Iuda, theyr kinges and princes to make them desolate, waste, despised & cursed according as it is come to passe this day. ¹⁹ Ye & Pharao the kinge of Egipt, his seruauntes, his prynces & hys people altogether one with anoth ²⁰ & al kinges of the land of Hus, al kinges of the Philistines lande, Ascalon, Azah, Accaron & the remnaunt of Asdod,

Thus the mery cheare of the chyldren of men, shall come to confusyon. ¹³ Gyrde you, & make youre mone, O ye prestes: mourne ye mynysters of the aulter: go youre way in, and slepe in sackcloth, O ye offycers of my God: for the meate and drinckofferynge shall be taken awaye from the house of youre God.
