⁴³ And the men of Israel answered the men of Iuda & said: we haue ten partes in the kynge, and haue therto more ryght to Dauid them ye. Why then did ye despise vs, that oure aduyse had not bene fyrste had in restoryng oure kinge againe? And the wordes of the men of Iuda were fearcer then the wordes of the men of Israel.

¹ And the men of Ephraim sayd vnto hym. Why haste thou serued vs thus, that thou calledst vs not, when thou wentest to fyght with the Madianites. And they chode with hym a good.

²³ God sent an hate betwene Abymelech & the cytezens of Sichem. And the cytezens of Sichem rayled vpon Abimelech,

¹ And the men of Ephraim gathered themselues together, & wente northwarde, and sayde vnto Iephthah: Wherfore wenteste thou to fyght with the children of Ammon, & dydest not cal vs to go wt the? we wil therfore burne thine house vpon the, wyth fyre. ² And Iephthah sayde vnto them: I & my people were at greate stryfe with the children of Ammon. And I called you. But ye deliuered me not out of their handes. ³ And when I sawe that ye delyuered me not, I put my lyfe in my handes & went vpon the chyldren of Ammon, And the Lorde delyuered them into my handes. Wherfore then are ye come vpon me to fyght wyth me. ⁴ And Iephthah gathered together all the men of Galaad, and fought with the Ephraites. And the men of Galaad smote the Ephraites, because they sayd: Ye Galaadites are but runneagates of Ephraim among the Ephraites, and the Manassites. ⁵ Moreouer the men of Galaad toke the passages of Iordan from the Ephraytes. And when those Ephraytes, that were escaped, sayde: let vs go ouer. Then the men of Galaad sayde vnto them: Ye are Ephraytes, and they sayde naye. ⁶ Then the other answered: then saye Scyboleth. And they sayde Syboleth, and coulde not so pronounce, where vpon the other toke them, and slewe them at the passages of Iordan. And there were ouerthrowen at the tyme of the Ephraytes fourty thousande.

¹ Then came all the trybes of Israel to Dauid to Hebron & sayde: se, we are thy bones & thy flesh.

⁹ And al the people were at stryffe thorowoute al the trybes of Israel sayinge: the kinge deliuered vs out of the hand of oure enemies, And he delyuered vs out of the hand of the Philistines. And nowe he is fled out of the land for Absalom.

¹⁴ And he bowed the hertes of all the men of Iuda, as a man woulde bowe the hert of one man: so that they sent worde to the kynge, that he shoulde returne with al his seruauntes.

¹ And there happened to be an vnthryftye felow named Seba the sonne of Bochri a man of Gemini whyche blewe a trompet and sayde: we haue no parte in Dauid, nor inheritaunce in the sonne of Isai, o Israel, let vs depart therfore euery man to hys tent.

⁶ Wherfore the kinge saide to Abisai: now shal Seba the sonne of Bochri be worsse to vs then Absalom. Take thou therfore thy Lordes seruauntes and folowe after him: lest he get him walled cyties and escaped vs.

³⁰ And Ahiah caught the newe mantell that was on hym, & rent it in twelue peces, ³¹ and sayde to Ieroboam: take the ten peces. For thys sayth the Lord God of Israel: beholde, I wyll rent the kyngedome out of the handes of Salomon, and will geue ten trybes to the,

¹⁶ And when all Israel sawe that the kynge regarded them not, the people aunswered the kynge agayne sayinge: we haue no parte in Dauid, nor enheritaunce in the sonne of Isai. To youre tentes therfor Israel, & nowe se to thyne owne house Dauid. And so Israell departed vnto theyr tentes.

¹⁰ Among the proud ther is euer strife, but amonge those that do all thynges wyth aduysemente, ther is wysdome.

¹ A soft answere putteth downe displeasure. but frowarde words prouoke vnto anger.

¹⁴ He that soweth discord & strife, is lyke one that dyggeth vp a water broke: but an open enemy is like the water that breaketh out & renneth abroad.

¹⁹ The vnitie of brethren is stronger then a castel, and they that hold together are like the barre of a palayce.

²¹ Be not ouercome of euyl: But ouercome euil with goodnesse.

¹⁵ Yf ye byte and deuour one another: take hede leaste ye be consumed one of another.

²⁰ Idolatrye wytchecrafte, hatred, varyaunce, zele, wrathe stryfe, sedityon, sectes,

²⁶ Let vs not be vayne gloryouse, prouokynge one another, and enuyinge one another.

³ that nothing be done thorowe stryfe or vaine glorye, but that in mekenes of mynde euerye man esteme other better then him selfe,

²⁰ For the wrath of man worketh not that whiche is ryghtuous before God.

² for in many thinges we synne all. Yf a man synne not in worde, the same is a perfect man and able to tame al the bodye. ³ Beholde we put bittes into the horsses mouthes that they shoulde obeye vs, and we turne aboute all the body. ⁴ Behold also the shyppes, which though they be so greate and are dryuen of fyers wyndes, yet are they turned aboute wyth a verye smale helme, whether soeuer the vyolence of the gouerner wyll ⁵ euen so the tonge is a lyttell member, and boasteth greate thinges. Beholde howe greate a thynge a lyttell fyre kyndleth, ⁶ and the tonge is fyre, and a worlde of wickednes. So is the tong set among our members, that it defyleth the whole body and setteth a fyre all that we haue of nature, & is it selfe set a fyre euen of hell. ⁷ All the natures of beastes, and of byrdes, and of serpentes, and thynges of the sea, are meked and tamed of the nature of man. ⁸ But the tonge can no man tame. It is an vnrulye euyll ful of deadly poyson. ⁹ Therewyth blesse we God the father, and therewyth cursse wemen which are made after the similitude of God. ¹⁰ Out of one mouth proceadeth blessynge and curssynge. My brethren these thynges ought not so to be.

¹⁴ But, yf ye haue bitter enuyinge and strife in youre hertes, reioyce not: neyther be lyars agaynste the trueth. ¹⁵ Thys wysedome descendeth not from aboue: but is earthye, & naturall, and deuelyshe: ¹⁶ For where enuiynge and stryfe is there is vnstablenes and all maner of euyll workes.

¹ From whence commeth warre & fyghtynge amonge you: come they not hear hence? euen of your voluptuousnes, that rayne in youre membres. ² Ye luste & haue not. Ye enuye and haue dignacyon, and cannot obtayne. Ye fyght and war and haue not, because ye axe not. ³ Ye axe and receyue not, because ye axe a mysse: euen to consume it vpon youre voluptuousnes ⁴ Ye aduouterers, & women that breake matrimonye: knowe ye not, how that the frendeshyppe of the worlde is enmitie to God warde? Who so euer wyl be a frende of the worlde, is made the enemy of God. ⁵ Eyther do ye thynke that the scrypture sayeth in vayne. The spyryte that dwelleth in you lusteth euen contrarye to enuye:
