¹ Afterwards I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit, with a great chain in his hand. ² and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil and satan, and bound him for a thousand years, ³ then cast him into the bottomless pit, there shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should seduce the nations no more, till the thousand years should he fulfilled: and after that, he was to be loosed for a short time. ⁴ I saw likewise thrones, where persons were seated, to whom the power of judging was given: and I saw the souls of those that were beheaded for the testimony they had given to Jesus, and for the word of God, who had not worshipped the beast, nor his image, nor had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. ⁵ but the rest of the dead shall not live again until the thousand years are finished. this is the first resurrection. ⁶ happy and holy are they that have part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God, and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. ⁷ When the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, ⁸ and shall go out to seduce the nations, which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to assemble them to battle: they will be as numerous as the sand of the sea. ⁹ they will spread on the surface of the earth, and encompass the camp of the saints, and the beloved city: and fire shall descend from God out of heaven, and devour them. ¹⁰ the devil that seduced them, shall be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. ¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose presence the earth and the heaven fled away, so that they disappear'd. ¹² and I saw the dead, small and great, stand before the throne; the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out. of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. ¹³ the sea gave up the dead which were in it; death and the grave delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every one according to their works. ¹⁴ and death and the grave were cast into the lake of fire: this is the second death. ¹⁵ and whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.

³¹ and they entreated him not to condemn them to the abyss.

⁴ for since God did not spare the angels, who had sinned, but having precipitated them to hell, confin'd them to chains of darkness, where they are reserv'd for judgment:

⁶ and the angels which kept not their original dignity, but deserted their proper abode, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness, to the judgment of the great day.

¹⁸ I am he that liveth; I was dead; but now you see I am alive for all eternity, amen; and I have the keys of the grave, and of death."

¹ And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. ² and he opened the bottomless pit, and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkned by reason of the smoke of the pit.

¹ Then I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, invested with a cloud, a rainbow was upon his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire.

¹ After this I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightned with his glory.

²⁹ and they roar'd out, Jesus, thou son of God, what injury have we done you? are you come here to torment us before the time?

²⁹ and every one that abandons his family, his brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my sake, shall receive in that age an hundred times the value, and shall inherit hereafter everlasting life.

⁷ and crying with a loud voice, said, "what injury have I done you, Jesus, thou son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, not to torment me."

²⁰ but if I cast out demons by the finger of God, it follows, that the reign of the Messiah is now begun among you. ²¹ when a man that is stout and well arm'd guards his palace, his possessions are safe. ²² but if a stronger than he should assault, and overcome him, he will strip him of all his furniture on which he relyed, and divide the plunder.

³¹ now is this world condemn'd: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

¹¹ of judgment, because the prince of this world is condemn'd.

²⁰ the God of peace will soon bruise Satan under your feet. the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

¹⁴ Since then the children were made subject to a state of mortality, so he himself likewise was subject to the same condition: that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

⁸ Be temperate, be vigilant: for your adversary the Devil goes about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

¹¹ they had for their king the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek his name is Apollyon.

⁹ the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, call'd the devil or satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were precipitated with him.

¹³ The dragon then finding that he was precipitated to the earth, persecuted the woman, who brought forth the man-child.

¹⁵ and the serpent spouted from his throat a flood of water, after the woman, in order to drown her with the flood.

¹⁷ which so enrag'd the dragon against the woman, that he went to make war with the rest of her race, who keep the commandments of God, and bear testimony to Jesus.

² and the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority.

⁴ They worshipped the dragon which had given his power to the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, "who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?"

²⁴ for there shall arise false Messiahs, and false prophets, and shall shew such astonishing miracles and prodigies, as to deceive, if that can do it, the very converts themselves.

⁶⁶ accordingly they went, and having clapt a seal upon the stone, they posted a guard to secure the sepulchre.

³ but I fear lest by some means or other, as Eve was beguiled by the subtilly of the serpent, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is due to Christ.

¹³ for these are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguised so as to pass for true apostles. ¹⁴ and no wonder; for satan himself may put on the appearance of an angel of light. ¹⁵ therefore it is not strange if his agents are so disguised as to appear like ministers of the gospel; but their end shall be answerable to their actions.

⁹ who by the instigation of satan will make his parade with various arts, with fallacious signs and prodigies, ¹⁰ and with all the vile methods of imposture, to the ruin of those, who are averse to the truth, by which they might be saved. ¹¹ wherefore God will suffer a spirit of delusion to work them into the belief of a lye:

⁸ But there is one thing, my brethren, you ought to be appriz'd of, which is this, that "with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."

¹⁴ and he deceived the inhabitants of the earth, by the prodigys which he had power to effect by the influence of the beast, by telling the inhabitants of the earth, that he had made an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, but yet did revive.

¹⁴ for they are the spirits of demons working miracles, which make a progress to the kings of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God almighty. ¹⁵ "I shall come with surprize, happy he that is upon the watch, and keepeth his garments pure, that his vices may not put him to shame." ¹⁶ and he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue, Armageddon.

² by whom the kings of the earth became idolaters, and the inhabiters of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of idolatry."

⁸ the beast that thou sawest, was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, shall wonder when they behold the beast that was, and is not, but shall be.

¹⁰ why then do the Scribes say, that Elias must first come? ¹¹ Jesus answered, 'tis true, Elias was to come first and set all things right. ¹² but I tell you, that Elias is already come, tho' they knew him not, but treated him in an arbitrary manner; with such usage as the son of man shall likewise suffer at their hands. ¹³ then the disciples perceiv'd, that what he said was meant of John the Baptist.

²⁸ Jesus reply'd, I declare unto you, that in the new age, when the son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye that have followed me shall likewise sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

¹⁰ then shall many relapse, and shall pursue one another with mutual treachery and hatred.

¹⁶ but Herod, from what he had heard, said, 'tis John himself, whom I caused to be beheaded, who is risen from the dead.

²⁷ but immediately dispatch'd the proper officer with orders to bring the head of John the Baptist.

¹¹ At length they started this question, why do the Scribes say, that Elias must first come?

¹⁷ and he shall march before him, in the spirit and power of Elias, to reconcile parents and children together, and the unruly to the practice of justice, that the people may be duly dispos'd to receive the Lord.

⁷ Now Herod the tetrarch was inform'd of all his transactions: and was perplex'd at the relation of some, that John was risen from the dead: whilst others said, Elias appear'd: ⁸ and others, that one of the old prophets was come to life again. ⁹ but Herod said, John was beheaded by my order, who then can this be, who, they say, performs such strange things? and he desired to have a sight of Jesus.

³⁰ that you may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom, and seated on thrones may judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

¹⁹ yet a little while, and the world shall see me no more: but ye shall see me: because I shall live again, and ye shall live also.

¹⁷ and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; although we now suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.

¹⁵ for, if by rejecting them, the world may be reconciled; what shall their restoration be, but a general resurrection?

² don't you know that these are to judge the world? if the world is to be judg'd by you, are not you qualify'd to decide your petty causes? ³ don't you know that we shall be judges of angels? much more then of the affairs of life?

¹² if we suffer, we shall also reign: if we renounce him,

⁹ I JOHN, who am your brother, and partake in the tribulation, in the reign, and in the patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony I gave of Jesus Christ.

²¹ to him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my father in his throne.

⁹ and they sung a new song, saying, "thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every tribe, and language, and people, and nation; ¹⁰ and hast made us kings and priests unto our God: and we shall reign on the earth."

⁹ When he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they maintain'd.

³ by virtue of my power, my two witnesses shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days cloathed in sackcloth.

⁷ when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit, will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.

¹¹ but after three days and an half, the spirit of life from God enter'd into them: they stood upon their feet, and great fear fell upon those who saw them.

¹⁵ The seventh angel sounded, and there were great voices in heaven, crying, "the kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever."

¹¹ they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word to which they gave testimony; for their lives they expos'd to the last.

¹² he exercised all the power of the first beast by his authority, and caused the earth, and those who dwell therein, to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. ¹³ he perform'd great wonders, so as to make fire come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men. ¹⁴ and he deceived the inhabitants of the earth, by the prodigys which he had power to effect by the influence of the beast, by telling the inhabitants of the earth, that he had made an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, but yet did revive. ¹⁵ he had power likewise to animate the image made for the beast, so that the image was made to speak, and as many as would not worship the image were order'd to be killed. ¹⁶ he likewise obliged all, both small and great, rich and poor, the freeman and the slave, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and order'd, ¹⁷ that no body should buy or sell unless he had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

¹¹ the smoke of their torment shall ascend for ever and ever: they who worship the beast or his image, they who receive the mark of his name, shall have no rest either day or night."

² and I saw as it were a sea of glass, mingled with fire; and those that had been victorious over the beast, and over his image, and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, with their divine harps in their hands.

⁶ happy and holy are they that have part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God, and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

⁵ no night shall be there, nor any need of a lamp, or of the light of the sun; for the Lord God will give them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

¹⁴ and you shall be happy in not receiving a requital: for you shall be recompenc'd at the resurrection of the just.

¹¹ in order to obtain the resurrection of the just.

²⁰ and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles in his favour, by which he seduc'd those that had received the mark of the beast, and those that worshipped his image. these were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. ²¹ all the rest were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were satiated with their flesh.

⁸ and shall go out to seduce the nations, which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to assemble them to battle: they will be as numerous as the sand of the sea. ⁹ they will spread on the surface of the earth, and encompass the camp of the saints, and the beloved city: and fire shall descend from God out of heaven, and devour them.

¹⁵ One of the company hearing that, said to him, happy is he that shall be entertain'd in the kingdom of God.

¹ I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God to you, that you present your bodies a living victim, holy, acceptable unto God, as the service of a rational being.

⁵ you your selves are as so many living stones, you are the edifice, the spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, agreeable to God by Jesus Christ.

⁹ and this they were destin'd to. but you are the chosen race, you are kings and priests, the holy nation, the peculiar people, that you might display his glory, who called you out

⁶ who hath made us kings and priests to his God and father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

¹¹ he that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith to the churches, he that overcometh, shall not be hurt by the second death."

¹⁰ and hast made us kings and priests unto our God: and we shall reign on the earth."

¹³ Then I heard a voice from heaven, saying to me, "write, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord; yes, from henceforth, saith the spirit, they shall rest from their labours; and the recompence of their labours shall follow them."

⁴ I saw likewise thrones, where persons were seated, to whom the power of judging was given: and I saw the souls of those that were beheaded for the testimony they had given to Jesus, and for the word of God, who had not worshipped the beast, nor his image, nor had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. ⁵ but the rest of the dead shall not live again until the thousand years are finished. this is the first resurrection.

⁸ but the fearful, and incredulous, the abominable, the murderer, the licentious, the poisoner, the idolater, and every lyar shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: this is the second death."

⁷ I shall soon come: happy is he that attends to the prophecies of this book."

¹² so that even a single person whose vigour was gone, gave rise to a posterity as numerous as the stars of the sky, or the sands on the sea-shore, which cannot be numbred.

⁵⁴ his disciples James and John observing this, said, Lord, shall we command fire to descend from heaven, as Elias did, in order to consume them?

²⁹ but the very day that Lot went out of Sodom, a storm of lightning and thunder fell from heaven and destroy'd them all.

⁴³ for the time will shortly come, when your enemies shall open their trenches before thee, hem you in, and closely besiege you:

²⁰ Now when you shall see Jerusalem invested by an army, then be assured that the desolation of it is nigh.

⁸ in flaming fire, to take vengeance on those, who know not God, and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

¹³ let us therefore decamp, and bear the reproach of following his example:

⁵ if any man should offer to hurt them, fire will proceed out of their mouth, and destroy their enemies: whoever should hurt them, would by this means perish.

¹³ he perform'd great wonders, so as to make fire come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men.

⁴¹ then will he say to those on the left, depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.

⁴⁶ and these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

¹⁰ he shall drink of the wine of the divine vengeance, the strongest wine that can be poured out of the cup of his indignation; He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the lamb: ¹¹ the smoke of their torment shall ascend for ever and ever: they who worship the beast or his image, they who receive the mark of his name, shall have no rest either day or night."

¹³ and I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

⁵ however by your impenitence, and the insensibility of your heart, you treasure up for yourself wrath against the day of wrath, and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

⁷ but the heavens and the earth now existing are kept in store by his Logos, reserv'd for the conflagration of doomsday, when the impious shall be involv'd in perdition.

¹⁰ As for that day of the Lord, it will advance like a thief: then the heavens will rush with violence, the boiling elements will be dissolved, and the earth with all its contents, shall be burnt away. ¹¹ Since then this whole system is to be destroyed, how holy should your conduct be, and how ardent your piety? ¹² expecting, and vehemently desiring the day of the Lord would come, when the heavens all on fire shall be dissolv'd, and the elements shall melt with intense heat.

² Immediately I was in an extasy: and I saw a throne placed in heaven, and one sitting on the throne.

¹⁴ every mountain and island were moved out of their places: the kings of the earth, the great men,

⁸ they lost their place in heaven:

²⁰ and every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

¹¹ Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse appear'd; and he that sat upon him was called the faithful and the true: in righteousness he judges and makes war:

¹ Afterwards I saw a new heaven, and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were vanished; and there was no more sea .

²⁷ for the son of man shall come in the glory of his father, with his angels; and then shall be make retribution to every man according to his works.

²⁰ however, let not this be the matter of your rejoicing, that the spirits are subject to you: but rejoice, that you have a title to the joys of heaven.

²⁸ let not this surprize you: for the time is coming, when all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and they that have done good, ²⁹ shall rise to the possession of life; and they that have done evil, shall rise to their condemnation.

²⁵ Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me shall live even though he were dead: ²⁶ and no man living that believeth in me, shall ever die.

¹⁵ I have the same expectations from the DEITY, which they themselves entertain, that of the resurrection both of the just and of the unjust.

⁶ who will render to every man according to his actions: eternal life to those,

¹⁰ why then dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou think contemptibly of thy brother? since we shall all of us be brought before the judgment-seat of Christ. ¹¹ for it is written, "as I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall give praise to God." ¹² Since then every one of us shall give an account of himself to God;

⁵ therefore suspend your judgment till the Lord comes, who will bring to light the secrets of darkness, and expose the counsels of mens hearts: and then shall every man have his due reward from God.

²¹ for since by man came death, by man the resurrection of the dead will likewise come. ²² for as by Adam all die, even so by Christ shall all be restored to life. ²³ but every one in proper order: Christ has the precedence, next they who were Christians shall rise at his advent.

¹⁰ for we must all appear before the tribunal of Christ; that every one may receive the retribution, according as his actions in the body were either good or evil.

³ yea, I intreat thee too, my faithful collegue, to assist them both, for they assisted me in the gospel, as well as Clement, and my other collegues, whose names are in the book of life.

¹⁵ for one thing I have in charge to tell you from the Lord, that we, who shall be found still alive at the coming of the Lord, shall not get the advance of those that are dead: ¹⁶ for the Lord himself will descend from heaven, and by the voice of the archangel, with the trumpet of God, resound the summons: they who died christians shall rise first: ¹⁷ then we, who shall be still alive, shall be convey'd together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall ever be with the Lord.

²³ I will strike her children dead; and all the churches shall know that I am he who searcheth the reins and the heart: and I will give to every one of you according to your works.

⁵ he that overcometh, the same shall be cloathed in white raiment; I will not efface his name out of the book of life, but I will own him before my father, and before his angels.

¹⁸ the nations were enrag'd, but the time of thy vengeance is come, and the time when the dead are to be judged, when thou wilt reward thy servants the prophets, the saints, and those that fear thy name, small and great, and exterminate those who have corrupted the land."

⁸ all that dwell upon the earth will worship him, whose names are not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the lamb, that was slain.

⁵ and a voice came out of the throne, saying, "praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great."

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose presence the earth and the heaven fled away, so that they disappear'd.

²⁷ and nothing that is impure, no one that is guilty of any abomination, or a lye, shall ever enter there: but they alone who are written in the lamb's book of life.

¹² behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

⁵⁰ this I say, my brethren, because the body, as it is at present, cannot possess the kingdom of God; and what is corruptible, can't enjoy incorruptibility. ⁵¹ I shall now tell you a very great secret: we shall not all of us sleep, but we shall all be changed, ⁵² in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the sound of the last trumpet (for the trumpet shall sound) and the dead shall rise incorruptible; but as for us, we shall be changed. ⁵³ for this corruptible body must be invested with incorruptibility, this mortal be invested with immortality. ⁵⁴ but when this corruptible shall be invested with incorruptibility, and this mortal with immortality, then shall be fulfilled that passage of scripture, " death is swallowed up for ever." ⁵⁵ "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" ⁵⁶ the sting of death was sin; and the strength of sin was the law. ⁵⁷ but thanks be to God, who has given us the victory, thro' our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁵⁸ therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye inflexibly steady, and continually surpass others in the work of the Lord, knowing that he will not leave your christian labour unrewarded.

⁸ and I looked, and there was a pale horse; the name of him that sat thereon was DEATH, and the Grave followed with him: and power was given to them, over the fourth part of the land to kill with sword, with famine, with pestilence, and with wild beasts.

¹² and I saw the dead, small and great, stand before the throne; the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out. of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

¹⁶ he that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that disbelieves, shall be condemned.

¹⁸ he that believeth on him, shall not be condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the only begotten son of God. ¹⁹ and this is the subject of their condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

³⁶ he that believeth on the son, hath a right to everlasting life: and he that disobeys the son, shall not enjoy life; but be expos'd to divine wrath.

⁶ Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man can come to the father, but by me.

¹² salvation is not to be had by any other: for there is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we can be saved.

³ how shall we escape, if we neglect that salutary doctrine? which was first published by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those that heard him;

²⁵ Take care that you be not deaf to him that speaketh: for if they did not escape, who disregarded the oracles pronounc'd on earth, much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him that delivered the oracles from heaven:

¹¹ Now what is testified, is this, that God has given to us eternal life: and this life is by his son. ¹² he that receives the son, is intitled to life; and he that does not receive the son of God, has no title to life.
