¹ Then there was given me a reed like a rod: with this direction, rise and measure the temple of God, with the altar, and those that worship therein. ² but don't measure the court which is without; for it is given to the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they trample under foot two and forty months. ³ by virtue of my power, my two witnesses shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days cloathed in sackcloth. ⁴ these are the two olive-trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the Lord of the earth. ⁵ if any man should offer to hurt them, fire will proceed out of their mouth, and destroy their enemies: whoever should hurt them, would by this means perish. ⁶ during their prophecy they have power to prevent any rain descending from heaven: their power extends over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with what plagues they please. ⁷ when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit, will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them. ⁸ their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which in the mystical stile is called Sodom and Egypt, where our Lord was crucified. ⁹ the people of different tribes, languages, and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and not suffer them to be buried in the grave. ¹⁰ the inhabitants of the land will rejoice, and triumph over them, they will send presents to one another; because the two prophets had gall'd the inhabitants of the land. ¹¹ but after three days and an half, the spirit of life from God enter'd into them: they stood upon their feet, and great fear fell upon those who saw them. ¹² then they heard a great voice from heaven, saying to them, "come up hither." and they ascended up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies beheld them. ¹³ at the same time there was a great earthquake; the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake seven thousand men were slain: and the remnant were frighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven. ¹⁴ the second wo is past, and behold, the third wo soon follows. ¹⁵ The seventh angel sounded, and there were great voices in heaven, crying, "the kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever." ¹⁶ then the four and twenty elders, who sat before God on their thrones, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, ¹⁷ saying, "we give thee thanks, O Lord God almighty, who. art, and who wast; because thou hast assum'd thy great power, and hast reigned. ¹⁸ the nations were enrag'd, but the time of thy vengeance is come, and the time when the dead are to be judged, when thou wilt reward thy servants the prophets, the saints, and those that fear thy name, small and great, and exterminate those who have corrupted the land." ¹⁹ THEN the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.

¹⁶ Don't you know, that you are the temple of God, and that the spirit of God dwells in you? ¹⁷ if any man divide the temple of God, him shall God destroy: for you, who are the temple of God, are consecrated to him.

¹⁶ and what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God has said, "I will dwell with, and walk among them; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

¹⁴ but far be it from me that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world is as contemptible to me, as I am to the world. ¹⁵ for in the dispensation of Jesus Christ, neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but the new creation. ¹⁶ as many as walk by this rule, peace and mercy be on them, even upon the Israel of God.

²⁰ being built upon the foundation laid by the apostles and prophets, whereof Jesus Christ himself is the main stone of the angle: ²¹ on which the whole structure rises with symmetry into a temple, consecrated by the Lord: ²² who by his spirit has likewise made you a part of this divine mansion.

⁵ you your selves are as so many living stones, you are the edifice, the spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, agreeable to God by Jesus Christ.

⁹ and this they were destin'd to. but you are the chosen race, you are kings and priests, the holy nation, the peculiar people, that you might display his glory, who called you out

¹ Then I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, invested with a cloud, a rainbow was upon his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. ² he held in his hand a little book open: his right foot was upon the sea, and his left foot on the land. ³ his voice was as loud as the roaring of a lion: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. ⁴ and when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: but I heard a voice saying to me, "seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not." ⁵ Then the angel which I saw standing upon the sea, and upon the land, lifted up his hand to heaven,

¹⁵ he that talked with me, had a golden reed to measure the city, its gates, and its walls.

⁵ then the devil took Jesus with him to Jerusalem, and having set him on the wing of the temple, he said to him,

¹³ Ye are the salt of the earth; but if the salt become insipid, how shall it recover its savour? it is no longer fit for any thing, but to be cast out and trod under foot.

⁵³ and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

²⁴ by the destructive sword shall they fall, and be led into captivity among all nations: and Jerusalem shall be kept waste by the nations, as long as those nations shall subsist.

³ don't be led into any mistake, because the previous rebellion does not yet appear, nor the man of sin throw off the disguise, that offspring of perdition: ⁴ that adversary that exalts it self above the divine authority of majesty: that is seated in the temple of God, pretending to be it self divine. ⁵ don't you remember, I told you this, when I was with you? ⁶ and you know what hinders his throwing off the disguise at a time which he enjoys for the present. ⁷ for the secret spirit of misrule is ready to break out as soon as the obstacle is taken away: ⁸ and then the lawless will be discover'd, whom the Lord will extirpate by the spirit of his mouth, and at his glorious advent, will intirely abolish him, ⁹ who by the instigation of satan will make his parade with various arts, with fallacious signs and prodigies, ¹⁰ and with all the vile methods of imposture, to the ruin of those, who are averse to the truth, by which they might be saved. ¹¹ wherefore God will suffer a spirit of delusion to work them into the belief of a lye: ¹² to the condemnation of all those, who instead of embracing the gospel, had pleasure in iniquity.

¹ Now the spirit says expresly, that in the latter times some shall abandon the faith, by giving credit to seducing spirits, and the doctrine concerning demons; ² broach'd by hypocrititical impostors, whose consciences are cauteriz'd, ³ interdicting marriage; and the use of animal food; which God created for the repast of the faithful, who embrace the truth with thankfulness.

¹ Take notice that in the latter days difficult incidents will arise; ² for men will be selfish, avaricious, vain, proud, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, ³ villainous, unnatural, perfidious, defamers, debauchees, ⁴ cruel, enemies to virtue, traitors, insolent, conceited, and more devoted to pleasure than to piety: ⁵ of which they wear the appearance, but disclaim its influence. have no intercourse with such. ⁶ Of this number are they, who insinuate themselves into families, to make a prey of the weaker sex, who are inveigled by their vitious suggestions, abetted by their own subtle passions,

²⁹ don't you think then that he deserves a much greater punishment, who hath despised the son of God, and counted the blood of the covenant wherewith be was sanctified, to have been justly shed, thereby offering an indignity to the spirit of grace?

³ by virtue of my power, my two witnesses shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days cloathed in sackcloth.

¹¹ but after three days and an half, the spirit of life from God enter'd into them: they stood upon their feet, and great fear fell upon those who saw them.

⁶ but the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her maintenance, during a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

¹ Then I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads, and ten horns; upon his horns were ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. ² and the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority. ³ and I saw one of his heads, as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world went wondring after the beast. ⁴ They worshipped the dragon which had given his power to the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, "who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?" ⁵ there was given to him a mouth speaking great things, and blasphemy; and power was given to him for two and forty months. ⁶ and he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and those that dwell in heaven, ⁷ he was permitted to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all the tribes, and provinces, and nations. ⁸ all that dwell upon the earth will worship him, whose names are not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the lamb, that was slain. ⁹ if any man have an ear, let him hear. ¹⁰ he hath leadeth into captivity, shall be led into captivity: he that killeth with the sword, shall perish by the sword. here is the patience and the faith of the saints. ¹¹ Then I beheld another beast coming out of the earth, it had two horns like a lamb, but it spake like a dragon. ¹² he exercised all the power of the first beast by his authority, and caused the earth, and those who dwell therein, to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. ¹³ he perform'd great wonders, so as to make fire come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men. ¹⁴ and he deceived the inhabitants of the earth, by the prodigys which he had power to effect by the influence of the beast, by telling the inhabitants of the earth, that he had made an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, but yet did revive. ¹⁵ he had power likewise to animate the image made for the beast, so that the image was made to speak, and as many as would not worship the image were order'd to be killed. ¹⁶ he likewise obliged all, both small and great, rich and poor, the freeman and the slave, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and order'd, ¹⁷ that no body should buy or sell unless he had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. ¹⁸ here is wisdom. let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred sixty six.

² and I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, descend from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

¹⁹ and if any one shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall exclude him from any interest in the tree of life, and in the holy city, and in the things which are written in this book."

¹⁶ but if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that the remonstrances of two or three persons may have its effect.

⁴⁸ you are witnesses of these things.

⁵ Jesus answered, I tell thee, except a man be renewed by the spiritual baptism, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. ⁶ the cleansing of the body is only external, but the purification of the spirit is spiritual. ⁷ be not surprized that I said to thee, you must be born again. ⁸ the wind bloweth where it listeth, and you hear the sound thereof, but cannot tell whence it comes, or whither it goes: such is the change in every one that is renewed by the spirit.

²⁷ but John made them this answer, a man can have no authority, but what he derives from heaven.

²⁷ and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

⁸ but ye shall receive the influence of the holy spirit, which will descend upon you: and ye shall be witnesses for me, in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth.

³² 'tis this Jesus whom God hath raised up, of which we all are witnesses.

¹⁵ but killed the prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

³¹ and for many days he was seen by those, who had accompany'd him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and they are now his witnesses to the people.

²⁸ which God has placed in the church, first apostles, next prophets, then teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, assistants, governours, interpreters of languages.

¹ This is the third time I am coming to you: "in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established."

¹¹ It is he then that made some, apostles: some, prophets: some, evangelists: and others, pastors, and teachers:

⁵ and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth: unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins by his own blood,

⁵ there was given to him a mouth speaking great things, and blasphemy; and power was given to him for two and forty months.

¹⁰ then I fell at his seet to worship him: but he said to me, "forbear: I am the servant of God, as you and your brethren are, that bear testimony to Jesus: worship God: for to give testimony to Jesus, is the very design of prophecy."

⁴ I saw likewise thrones, where persons were seated, to whom the power of judging was given: and I saw the souls of those that were beheaded for the testimony they had given to Jesus, and for the word of God, who had not worshipped the beast, nor his image, nor had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

¹⁴ ye are the light of the world. a city that is situated on an hill, cannot be hid; ¹⁵ and when men light a lamp, they do not put it under a bushel: but on the stand, to give light to all the family. ¹⁶ even so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father who is in heaven.

³³ However, when a man has once lighted his lamp, he does not hide it in a by-place, or under a bushel; but sets it on a stand, that all who come in may have light.

¹⁷ if then, some of the branches are broken off, and thou like a wild olive, were grafted in their place to partake of the root and sap of the olivestock;

²⁰ the conceal'd meaning of the seven stars which you saw in my right hand, and of the seven golden candlesticks, is this: the seven stars signify the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which you saw, signify the seven churches.

⁴ and he fell to the ground, and heard a voice which said to him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? ⁵ and he said, who art thou, Lord? and the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: [it is hard for thee to kick against the goad. Then trembling with the fright Saul said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? and the Lord said to him,]

²⁵ I assure you, though there were many widows in Israel, when the heaven had furnished no rain for three years and a half, and a great famine spread through all the land:

¹⁶ confess then to one another the offences you have committed, and pray for one another, that you may be healed; the fervent prayer of a virtuous man has great influence. ¹⁷ Elias was only a man, as we are; however, having ardently prayed, that it might not rain, it did not rain in that country for three years and a half: ¹⁸ then be pray'd again: the heavens sent its showers, and the earth push'd out its fruit.

³² but he answered them, go, tell that fox, that to-day and to-morrow I am casting out demons, and performing cures, and the third day my course will be finished:

⁴ I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

³⁰ when Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, it is finished: and bowing his head, he expir'd.

²⁴ things that little affect me, nor is life so much my concern, as to finish my course, and the charge I receiv'd from the Lord Jesus, to attest the declaration of the divine favour.

⁸ and then the lawless will be discover'd, whom the Lord will extirpate by the spirit of his mouth, and at his glorious advent, will intirely abolish him, ⁹ who by the instigation of satan will make his parade with various arts, with fallacious signs and prodigies,

⁷ I have struggled in a glorious cause: I have finish'd my career: I have stood to the faith:

¹ And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. ² and he opened the bottomless pit, and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkned by reason of the smoke of the pit.

I will tell thee the mystical meaning of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. ⁸ the beast that thou sawest, was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, shall wonder when they behold the beast that was, and is not, but shall be.

¹⁹ Then I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, with their armies assembled, to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. ²⁰ and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles in his favour, by which he seduc'd those that had received the mark of the beast, and those that worshipped his image. these were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

¹⁵ I declare unto you, the people of Sodom and Gomorrha shall find less severity in the day of judgment, than that city.

³³ till then I must be stirring about, to-day, and to-morrow, and the next day: for a prophet cannot be put to death any where, but at Jerusalem. ³⁴ "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest those, who are sent unto thee: how often would I have gather'd thy children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and ye would not?"

⁴ and he fell to the ground, and heard a voice which said to him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁶ if they shall fall away, to re-instate themselves by repentance: seeing, as far in them lies, they crucify the son of God afresh, and expose him to open shame.

¹² for Jesus likewise suffered without the gate, to show he was the expiatory victim for the people.

⁶ since he condemn'd the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha to an entire subversion, and reduc'd them to ashes, to make them serve for examples to future impiety:

⁷ so it was with Sodom, Gomorrha, and the neighbouring cities, who abandoning themselves to the same licentiousness and abominable passions, were made examples by suffering the punishment of eternal fire.

⁹ the people of different tribes, languages, and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and not suffer them to be buried in the grave.

¹³ at the same time there was a great earthquake; the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake seven thousand men were slain: and the remnant were frighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

⁸ And a second angel followed, saying, "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, because she has made all nations drink of the deadly wine of her fornication."

¹⁹ and the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

¹ Then there came one of the seven angels that had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying "come hither, I will explain to you the judgment of the great whore, that sitteth upon many waters:

⁵ Upon her forehead this mystical title was written, Babylon the great, the mother of harlots, and abominations of the earth.

² and he cried with a strong voice, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the abode of demons, the dungeon of every foul spirit, and a cage of every impure ill-boding bird.

¹⁰ frightned at her torments they will stand afar off, and cry, "alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! what! is thy condemnation so suddenly come?"

¹⁸ and cry out, when they see the smoke of her burning, what city could be compar'd to this great city?

²¹ Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great milstone, and threw it into the sea, saying, "thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, never to be found any more.

²⁴ here it was, that the blood of the prophets, of the saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth, was found."

² for according as ye judge others, ye shall be judged yourselves: the measure you mete, shall be measured to you again.

⁸ when he had taken the book, the four animals, and the four and twenty elders fell down before the lamb, every one of them having harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of the saints.

¹¹ then he said to me, "thou must prophesy again of many people, nations, provinces, and kings."

¹⁵ Then he said to me, the waters which you saw, where the prostitute has her seat, are the people, the multitude, nations, and provinces.

¹⁷ I saw likewise an angel standing upon the sun; and he cryed with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, "come and gather your selves together to the supper of the great God; ¹⁸ that ye may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses, and of those that ride on them, the flesh of all that are free, and all that are slaves, both small and great."

²² and ye shall be hated by all the world for professing my name: but he that perseveres unto the end, shall escape.

⁷ the world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I plainly show, that their works are evil.

²⁰ verily, verily I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

³³ When they heard that, they were so enraged, they consulted to take away their lives.

⁵⁴ When they heard these things, they were transported with rage, and gnashed their teeth against him. ⁵⁵ but he, full of the holy spirit, fix'd his eyes towards heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. ⁵⁶ and he said, there I see the heavens open, and the son of man standing on the right hand of God. ⁵⁷ then they broke out into a loud cry, and stopping their ears, fell upon him all at once.

⁵ but the unbelieving Jews thro' envy, by the assistance of some loose strolers, rais'd a mob, set the whole city in an uproar, and attack'd Jason's house, thinking to find them there, and deliver them up to the populace. ⁶ but not finding them, they dragg'd Jason and some of the brethren to the magistrates, crying out, these that have been every where the disturbers of the publick peace, are come hither also, and have been entertain'd by Jason.

⁶ it does not countenance injustice, but smiles upon virtue;

¹⁰ because you have kept my precept about patience, I also will keep you in the time of persecution, which shall happen to all the world, to try the inhabitants of the earth.

¹³ The dragon then finding that he was precipitated to the earth, persecuted the woman, who brought forth the man-child.

⁸ all that dwell upon the earth will worship him, whose names are not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the lamb, that was slain.

¹⁴ and he deceived the inhabitants of the earth, by the prodigys which he had power to effect by the influence of the beast, by telling the inhabitants of the earth, that he had made an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, but yet did revive.

¹⁰ And the FIFTH angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain.

⁵ at these words Ananias fell down dead upon the spot: which struck the minds of all that heard of it with great dread.

¹¹ which affected the whole assembly, and all that heard of it with great dread.

² for the christian dispensation of a spiritual life has set me free from the legal state of sin and death.

¹¹ for if the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead, dwell in you; he that raised up Christ from the dead, shall likewise restore your mortal bodies to life, by his spirit that dwelleth in you.

²³ and being in the infernal regions of torments, he lift up his eyes, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bower.

⁹ After this discourse, while they beheld, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight.

³⁴ who shall condemn them? shall Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, and makes intercession for us? ³⁵ what shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or penury, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ for as it is written, "for thy sake we are sacrificed every day; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter:" ³⁷ yet after all we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us.

⁵ did raise us all, who were in that deadly state of sin, to life by Christ, for by grace ye are saved: ⁶ he hath raised us up together, and made us partakers of his heavenly kingdom.

¹⁷ then we, who shall be still alive, shall be convey'd together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall ever be with the Lord.

²¹ to him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my father in his throne.

¹ At another time I had a vision, when I saw a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard talking to me, was like the sound of a trumpet; which said, "come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter."

⁵ and she brought forth a man-child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up to be with God, and about his throne.

¹⁵ At that time the disciples being assembled, to the number of about an hundred and twenty, Peter rose up in the midst of them,

⁴ thou hast a few persons in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

¹² And when I beheld the opening of the sixth seal, there was a great earthquake: the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; the stars

⁵ and the angel took the censer, and having filled it with the fire of the altar, he cast it upon the land: and there was a noise of thunders, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

⁹ and the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. ¹⁰ And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning like a flambeau, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters. ¹¹ the name of the star was wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. ¹² And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkned, and the day lost a third part of its light, and the night likewise.

¹⁹ THEN the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.

¹ Then I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads, and ten horns; upon his horns were ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. ² and the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority. ³ and I saw one of his heads, as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world went wondring after the beast.

⁷ "fear the Lord, and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgment is come: adore therefore him that made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and the fountains."

⁴ who will not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: and all nations shall come to adore thee; because thy judgments have been display'd."

⁹ and men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, who hath power over these plagues: and they repented not, to give him glory. ¹⁰ And the FIFTH angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain. ¹¹ and blasphemed the God of heaven, because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

¹⁸ and there were voices, thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake and so great. ¹⁹ and the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

⁷ let us rejoyce, and triumph, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the lamb is come, and his spouse is already adorn'd.

¹³ then I beheld, and heard an eagle flying thro' the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, wo, wo, wo to the inhabitants of the earth, by reason of the sound of the trumpets which the other three angels are yet to sound.

¹² One wo is past, and now two woes are to follow.

¹ I saw another prodigy in heaven, great and marvellous, SEVEN ANGELS, having the seven last plagues, for by them the divine vengeance is consummated.

¹ THEN I heard a terrible voice from the temple, crying to the seven angels, "go pour out the VIALS of divine vengeance upon the earth." ² Immediately the FIRST went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisom and grievous ulcer upon the men who had the mark of the beast, and upon those who worshipped his image. ³ The SECOND angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. ⁴ The THIRD angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains; and they became blood. ⁵ and I heard the angel of the waters say, "thou art just, who art, and hast always been holy, because thou hast judged thus: ⁶ for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets: thou hast given them blood to drink; for they have deserv'd it." ⁷ and I heard another from the altar say, "oh! Lord God almighty, true and just are thy judgments." ⁸ The FOURTH angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given to him to scorch mankind with its fire. ⁹ and men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, who hath power over these plagues: and they repented not, to give him glory. ¹⁰ And the FIFTH angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain. ¹¹ and blasphemed the God of heaven, because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. ¹² And the SIXTH angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. ¹³ and I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. ¹⁴ for they are the spirits of demons working miracles, which make a progress to the kings of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God almighty. ¹⁵ "I shall come with surprize, happy he that is upon the watch, and keepeth his garments pure, that his vices may not put him to shame." ¹⁶ and he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue, Armageddon. ¹⁷ And the SEVENTH angel poured out his vial into the air; and there a loud voice issued from the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, "it is done." ¹⁸ and there were voices, thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake and so great. ¹⁹ and the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. ²⁰ and every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. ²¹ and there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a TALENT: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

¹³ and let us not be left under temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."

³³ he shall reign over the house of Jacob, and of his kingdom there shall be no end."

⁶ and when he comes home, call his friends and neighbours together, and say to them, rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep, that was lost?

¹⁰ even so, I assure you, the angels in heaven rejoice, when any one sinner becomes a penitent.

⁸ but to the son he saith, "God is thy throne for ever and ever; the sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of equity.

² Then I saw the seven angels who attend in the presence of God; and to them were given seven trumpets. ³ and another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given to him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar, which was before the throne. ⁴ and the smoke of the incense together with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God, out of the angel's hand. ⁵ and the angel took the censer, and having filled it with the fire of the altar, he cast it upon the land: and there was a noise of thunders, and lightnings, and an earthquake. ⁶ Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets, prepared themselves to sound.

¹² And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkned, and the day lost a third part of its light, and the night likewise.

¹ And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

¹³ then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar, which is before God,

⁷ but when the seventh angel should speak, and the trumpet should sound, the mystery of God should be accomplish'd, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

¹⁰ then I heard a loud voice, which cry'd in the heaven, "the time of salvation, and power, the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ are now come: for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, is cast down.

¹⁷ And the SEVENTH angel poured out his vial into the air; and there a loud voice issued from the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, "it is done."

¹⁴ they will make war with the lamb, but the lamb, who is lord of lords, and king of kings, together with those that are called, chosen, and faithful, shall overcome them.

¹ And after these things I heard a great voice of a numerous multitude in heaven, saying, "alleluia; salvation, glory, honour, and power unto the Lord our God:

⁶ and I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, which was like the sound of many waters, or like a volley of thunder, saying, "alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent does reign."

⁴ round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty Elders sitting, cloathed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

¹⁰ four and twenty elders fell down before him that sat on the throne, and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

⁵ and one of the elders said to me, weep not: behold, the lion of the tribe of Juda, the offspring of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. ⁶ And I beheld, and saw before the throne, in the midst of the four animals, and in the midst of the elders, a lamb which seem'd to have been slain, having seven horns, and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. ⁷ and he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sate upon the throne. ⁸ when he had taken the book, the four animals, and the four and twenty elders fell down before the lamb, every one of them having harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of the saints.

¹⁴ and the four animals said, amen. and the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.

¹¹ and all the angels who stood round about the throne, and about the elders, and the four animals fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, saying, amen:

⁴ Then the four and twenty elders, and the four animals fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, "amen; alleluia."

²⁵ At the same time Jesus, continuing his discourses, said, "I thank thee, O father, Lord of heaven and earth, for having revealed unto babes what thou hast hid from the wise and prudent.

²¹ At that very time Jesus fell into a divine transport, and said, "I magnify thee, O father, the Lord of heaven and earth, for having conceal'd these things from the artful and the crafty, whilst thou hast reveal'd them to the unskilful. justly, O father, hast thou thus dispens'd thy favour."

⁴¹ then they took away the stone from the place where the corps was laid. and Jesus lifting up his eyes to heaven said, "father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

¹⁴ but thanks be to God, who maketh me triumph, thro' Christ, and spreads his healing doctrine by me, in eevery place:

¹⁵ thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift.

¹² I offer thanks to Jesus Christ our Lord, who qualified me for the ministry he has plac'd me in, for having appointed me to such a trust,

⁴ JOHN to the seven churches which are in Asia: favour and peace be with you from him WHO IS, WHO WAS, WHO WILL BE; and from the seven spirits who are before his throne;

⁸ I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, saith the Lord, who is, and who was, and who will be, the almighty.

⁸ the four animals had each of them six wings about him, and they were full of eyes within; and they never ceas'd day and night, crying, HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, Lord God ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS, WHO IS, AND WHO WILL BE. and when those animals gave glory, ⁹ and honour, and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, the

¹⁵ The seventh angel sounded, and there were great voices in heaven, crying, "the kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever."

³ and they sung the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the lamb, saying, "great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou king of ages.

⁵ and I heard the angel of the waters say, "thou art just, who art, and hast always been holy, because thou hast judged thus:

⁷ and I heard another from the altar say, "oh! Lord God almighty, true and just are thy judgments."

¹⁴ for they are the spirits of demons working miracles, which make a progress to the kings of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God almighty.

¹¹ Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse appear'd; and he that sat upon him was called the faithful and the true: in righteousness he judges and makes war:

¹² Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great will be your reward in heaven: for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

⁵⁰ his mercy is on them that fear him, from generation to generation.

⁵ by which you may be assur'd, that they will be punish'd by the divine justice, and that you shall be rewarded with the kingdom of God, for which you suffer; ⁶ since it is agreeable to his justice to afflict those in their turn, who afflict you: ⁷ and that you, who are distress'd, should obtain your repose, together with us, when the Lord Jesus, with his angels, the ministers of his power, shall descend from heaven,

²⁷ as then it is appointed that men should die but once, after which the judgment ensues;

²⁵ chusing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; ²⁶ esteeming the sufferings of Israel greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he had an eye to the reward.

¹⁰ and they cried with a loud voice, saying, "how long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou defer doing justice, and avenging our blood on those that dwell on the earth?" ¹¹ and white robes were given to every one of them, and it was said unto them, that they should have patience yet for a little while, till the number of their fellow-servants, and their brethren, that should be killed, as they were, should be complete.

¹⁵ the rich men, the chief captains, and the mighty men, every bond-man, and every free-man, bid themselves in the caverns, and in the rocks of the mountains; and said to the mountains, and to the rocks, ¹⁶ "fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the lamb: ¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to subsist?"

⁹ the people of different tribes, languages, and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and not suffer them to be buried in the grave. ¹⁰ the inhabitants of the land will rejoice, and triumph over them, they will send presents to one another; because the two prophets had gall'd the inhabitants of the land.

¹⁰ he hath leadeth into captivity, shall be led into captivity: he that killeth with the sword, shall perish by the sword. here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

¹⁰ he shall drink of the wine of the divine vengeance, the strongest wine that can be poured out of the cup of his indignation; He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the lamb:

⁷ and one of the four animals gave to the seven angels, seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.

¹² the ten horns which you saw, are ten kings, who have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings for a while with the beast. ¹³ they all agree in this, to give their power and strength to the beast. ¹⁴ they will make war with the lamb, but the lamb, who is lord of lords, and king of kings, together with those that are called, chosen, and faithful, shall overcome them. ¹⁵ Then he said to me, the waters which you saw, where the prostitute has her seat, are the people, the multitude, nations, and provinces.

⁶ reward her according to her dealings, and repay her double, according to her works: give her twice as much in the same cup which she gave you to drink,

¹⁶ crying, alas, alas, that great city, that was cloathed in fine linnen, purple, and scarlet: decked with gold, precious stones and pearls: ¹⁷ her wealth is all sunk in a moment! the pilots and the passengers: the ships-crew, and the super-cargo's shall stand afar off, ¹⁸ and cry out, when they see the smoke of her burning, what city could be compar'd to this great city? ¹⁹ they will scatter dust on their heads, and cry with tears, and bemoaning, "alas, alas, that great city, which enrich'd all the traders by sea, by the consumption she made: how is she reduc'd to a desert, in an instant!" ²⁰ O heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets, triumph at her ruin, since God hath avenged you on her. ²¹ Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great milstone, and threw it into the sea, saying, "thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, never to be found any more. ²² the musick of the harp, of the flute, and of the trumpet, shall never be heard again in thee: no artist of any kind shall be found again in thee; the sound of a milstone shall never be heard again in thee; ²³ the lamp shall no more be lighted in thee; the bridal-song shall be heard there no more: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; all nations were seduc'd by thy enchantments. ²⁴ here it was, that the blood of the prophets, of the saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth, was found."

⁵ and a voice came out of the throne, saying, "praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great."

¹⁵ out of his mouth went a sharp sword, in order to smite the nations: for he shall rule them with an iron sceptre: and tread the wine-press of the fierce vengeance of almighty God.

¹⁹ Then I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, with their armies assembled, to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. ²⁰ and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles in his favour, by which he seduc'd those that had received the mark of the beast, and those that worshipped his image. these were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. ²¹ all the rest were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were satiated with their flesh.

⁴ I saw likewise thrones, where persons were seated, to whom the power of judging was given: and I saw the souls of those that were beheaded for the testimony they had given to Jesus, and for the word of God, who had not worshipped the beast, nor his image, nor had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. ⁵ but the rest of the dead shall not live again until the thousand years are finished. this is the first resurrection.

¹² and I saw the dead, small and great, stand before the throne; the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out. of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

¹⁵ and whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.

¹² behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

¹⁴ besides, their minds were greatly prejudiced: for that very veil would still have obstructed the understanding of the old testament, unless it had been taken away by Christ. ¹⁵ nevertheless, when Moses is read, the veil upon their mind continues unto this day: ¹⁶ but when their mind shall turn to the Lord, that veil too shall be taken away.

⁴ there was the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant gilded all over with gold, wherein was the golden urn containing the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the alliance. ⁵ over the ark were the cherubims of glory covering the propitiatory with their wings, of which we cannot now enter into a particular detail. ⁶ These things being thus disposed, the priests went at all times into the first part of the tabernacle, to officiate the divine service. but into the other part, ⁷ the high priest only enter'd, and that but once every year, when he carried the blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people. ⁸ the holy spirit showing thereby, that the way to the holy of holys, was not yet open, while the first tabernacle was standing.

⁵ out of the throne proceeded lightnings, and thundrings, and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.

⁷ the first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, which fell upon the earth: and a third part of the earth, and a third part of the trees was burnt up, and all the green grass.

¹⁵ and a sharp sickle in his hand. and another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, "thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the reaping time is come; for the ¹⁶ harvest of the earth is ripe." so he that sat on the cloud, stretch'd out his sickle to the earth; and the earth was reaped. ¹⁷ Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven,

⁵ After that I looked, and the tabernacle of the testimony in the heavenly temple was opened: ⁶ then the seven angels, who held the seven plagues, came out of the temple, cloathed in pure white linen, wearing upon their breasts girdles of gold. ⁷ and one of the four animals gave to the seven angels, seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever. ⁸ the temple was filled with smoke from the emanations of divine power; and no one could enter into the temple, till the seven plagues were executed by the seven angels.
