⁴ God sent forth his own son born of a woman, and subject to the law, to redeem those,

²³ a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," that is to say, God our Saviour.

¹⁵ and Jesus answer'd, Let it be so for the present, for it becometh us to do whatever is right. then John consented.

¹⁷ Don't think that I am come to abolish the law or the prophets: I am not come to abolish, but to complete them.

³⁵ the angel answered her, "the holy spirit shall descend upon thee, and the power of the most high shall over-shadow thee: wherefore thy holy offspring shall be called the son of God.

⁷ and being brought to bed of her first born, she swathed him, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

¹⁰ but the angel said to them, be not afraid, I am only come to bring you great news, which will be matter of joy to you and to the whole world. ¹¹ for the Lord Messiah your saviour is this day born, in the city of David:

²¹ The eighth day, when the child was to be circumcised, being come, he was named Jesus, the name, which the angel had given before his conception. ²² At length the time appointed by the law of Moses for the purification of women being accomplish'd, they carried the infant to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, according as his law directs, ²³ "every first born male-child shall be consecrated to the Lord." ²⁴ and to offer the sacrifice prescrib'd by the law, which was a pair of turtle-doves, or two young pidgeons. ²⁵ At that time there dwelt at Jerusalem one Simeon, an honest, religious man, one who expected the appearance of the Messiah, and was endued with the spirit of prophecy. ²⁶ to him it was revealed by the holy spirit, that he should not die till he had seen the Messiah of the Lord. ²⁷ by the divine direction he came into the temple, just as the parents of Jesus were bringing in the child to perform what the law required in his behalf.

¹⁴ The Logos became incarnate, and had his tabernacle among us, being full of grace and truth; and we contemplated his glory, such glory as the Monogenes derived from the father.

¹⁶ for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life.

³⁸ for I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.

⁴² Jesus said to them, if God were your father, ye would love me: for I was commissioned by God to come; I did not come of my self, but he sent me.

³⁶ how can you say that I blaspheme, I whom the father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, because I said I am the son of God?

⁷ and he said to them, it is not for you, to know the times or the seasons, which the father hath reserv'd in his own disposal.

³ with relation to his son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was of the lineage of David as to his body,

³ God having sent his own son invested with a body like that of sinful men, as a sacrifice for sin, thereby destroyed its power; which the law could not effect, human nature being in such a corrupted state.

⁵ who are the offspring of the patriarchs, and of whom as to the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

⁸ for I tell you, that Jesus Christ was a minister to the Jews, to manifest the veracity of God in fulfilling the promises made to the fathers:

¹⁰ when the full time of the dispensation was come, to reduce all things both in heaven and on earth, under one head in Christ.

⁶ who tho' he was the image of God, did not affect to appear with divine majesty, but divested himself thereof, ⁷ by assuming the form of a servant: being made in the likeness of men, ⁸ and his whole exterior showing nothing more than a meer man, he abased himself, and carried his submission so far as to die, even the death of the cross.

¹⁴ and cancell'd the obligation of the ceremonial law, which was disadvantageous to us, removing that which divided us, and nailing it to the cross.

¹⁶ the mystery of piety is the pillar and basts of truth; and certainly most extraordinary. God has appear'd in the flesh, been justified by the spirit, seen by angels, proclaim'd to the Gentiles, believ'd by the world, and assum'd into glory.

¹⁴ Since then the children were made subject to a state of mortality, so he himself likewise was subject to the same condition: that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

¹⁰ only in matters relating to meats and drinks, and divers baptisms, meer external rites which were to subsist only till the time of reformation.

⁵ wherefore at his appearing in publick, he saith, "sacrifice and offering thou wouldst not, but a body hast thou prepared me: ⁶ in burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure: ⁷ then said I, lo I come, as in the volume of the book it is written of me, to do thy will, O God."

² by this you may distinguish the spirit of God: "every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is from God.

⁹ by this was the love of God displayed towards us, in that God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we might live thro' him. ¹⁰ and what heightens his love, was this, that it was not we who first loved God, but it was he that first loved us, and sent his son to expiate our sins.

¹⁴ and we have seen, and do testify, that the father hath sent the son to be the saviour of the world.
