¹⁷ this therefore I say, that the law, which was not till four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul the promise, that was ratified before by God, so as to set the promise afoot.

⁶⁸ "blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he hath regarded and wrought a deliverance for his people: ⁶⁹ he hath rais'd up a powerful saviour for us, in the family of his servant David, ⁷⁰ according to the antient promise he made by the mouth of the holy prophets, ⁷¹ to deliver us from our enemies, and from the power of all that hate us: ⁷² to show regard to our forefathers, in performing his holy covenant, ⁷³ the oath which he made to our father Abraham, to grant us this favour, ⁷⁴ that we should be delivered from the power of our enemies, and serve him with security, ⁷⁵ in the sincere practice of holiness and justice, all our days. ⁷⁶ and you, dear babe, you shall be the prophet of the most high: for you shall go before the Lord, in order to prepare his way, ⁷⁷ by acquainting his people how they may be saved by the remission of their sins, ⁷⁸ through the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun has visited us from on high, ⁷⁹ to enlighten those, who are in darkness, and in the shadow of death, and to direct our steps into the ways of peace."

¹⁷ the law indeed was delivered by Moses, but grace and truth was the dispensation of Jesus Christ.

⁵⁶ your father Abraham long'd to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. ⁵⁷ then said the Jews to him, you are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham? ⁵⁸ Jesus said to them, verily, verily I say unto you, before Abraham was I AM.

⁶ God declar'd likewise, "that his posterity should sojourn in a strange land, where they should be enslaved and abused four hundred years.

³ for what if some betrayed their trust? shall their unfaithfulness render

²⁵ whom God had ordained, thro' faith, to be the propitiatory victim by his blood, for the manifestation of his goodness, by patiently passing over their past transgressions: to manifest,

¹³ Besides, the promise that he should possess the world, was not made to Abraham, or to his posterity in consideration of the law, but with regard to the righteousness by faith. ¹⁴ for if they only who are of the law have right of possession, faith is made useless, and the promise becomes of no effect.

¹² I mean that one or other of you cries out "I am of Paul, and I of Apollos, and I of Cephas,

¹⁷ for Christ did not send me to baptize: but to preach the gospel: tho' not with the preaching of the wise, lest the cross of Christ should have been hinder'd in its efficacy.

²⁹ This I say, brethren, because the time is coming, when they who have wives will be as those that have none;

¹⁹ that the idol, or that what is offered in sacrifice to the idol, is a matter of consequence?

²⁰ for all the promises of God do center in him, and are verifyed by him to the glory of God by our preaching.

⁶ remember, " he who sows sparingly, shall reap also sparingly: and he who sows bountifully, shall reap also bountifully."

¹⁵ Brethren, I speak according to the practice of men; contracts between men, when once ratified, cannot be disannulled or altered afterwards by any man.

²¹ Is the law then opposite to the promises? by no means. for if there had been a law given, which could have given life, certainly justification should have been by the law.

⁴ Christ is of no use to you, whoever of you seek to be justified by the law; you have lost all interest in the gospel-dispensation.

¹⁶ I say then, conduct yourselves by the spirit, and you will not then gratify the animal passions.

¹⁷ This I say therefore, and conjure you by the Lord not to live for the future as other Gentiles do, in the vanity of their minds,

⁴ I mention this, lest any one should deceive you by specious pretences.

¹³ For when God gave his promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, saying, ¹⁴ "surely I will heap blessings upon thee, and will give thee a numerous posterity." ¹⁵ and after he had patiently waited, he obtained what was promised. ¹⁶ for when men swear by a superior, the ratifying what they say with an oath, puts an end to all further debate. ¹⁷ wherefore God was willing to give the heirs of promise a stronger proof of the immutability of his counsel, by the intervention of an oath: ¹⁸ that by two immutable things in which it was impossible for God to deceive us, we, who have no other refuge to fly to, but to maintain our present hopes,

¹⁸ wherefore the preceeding law is abolished for its being weak and useless.

¹³ These all died in faith, without receiving what was promised, having only a distant view of what they eagerly expected, professing to live as strangers and pilgrims in the land.

¹⁷ 'Twas by faith that Abraham, when put to the trial, offered up Isaac: HE offered up his darling son, to whose posterity the promises were to be made good: ¹⁸ of whom it was said, "only the descendants of Isaac shall be counted your posterity:" ¹⁹ concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the grave; from whence, in a figurative sense, be may be said to have been recover'd.

³⁹ Tho' these were all celebrated for their faith, they did not receive the reward that was promised: ⁴⁰ because God out of his distinguishing kindness to us, would not let them arrive before us to the enjoyment of perfect felicity.

¹¹ when the spirit of Christ inform'd the minds of the prophets of his future sufferings, and of the glorious consequences, they were solicitous to know the circumstances of the times pointed at: ¹² and were answer'd, that it was not they, but we, who were concern'd in the events which they predicted, events which have been now represented to you by those, whom the holy spirit from heaven inspired to preach the gospel to you: a secret which the angels desire to penetrate into.

²⁰ who was destin'd before the creation of the world, tho' 'tis of late only that he has appear'd, upon your account:
