⁸ Be temperate, be vigilant: for your adversary the Devil goes about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

¹ Then was Jesus led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil:

¹¹ whereupon the devil left him, and immediately angels came and ministred unto him.

³⁹ the enemy that sowed them is the devil: the harvest is the conclusion of the age: and the reapers are the angels.

⁴² watch therefore, for ye know not at what hour your Lord shall come.

⁴⁸ but if he be dishonest, and says to himself, my Lord delays coming, ⁴⁹ and shall pretend to assault his fellow-servants, and spend his time with sots: ⁵⁰ the master of that servant will come in a day when he least expects it, and at an hour he is not aware of;

⁴¹ then will he say to those on the left, depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.

⁴⁵ but if the servant should say within himself, my master delays his return; and fall a beating his fellow-servants, indulging himself in eating and drinking to excess. ⁴⁶ his master will return on a day he does not expect him, and a an hour he is ignorant of; he will separate him from the rest, and give him a treatment answerable to his infidelity.

³⁴ set a guard upon yourselves, that ye be not stupified by surfeiting and drunkenness, or by the disquietudes of this life, and so that day come upon you with a surprize.

³⁶ be therefore upon your guard, be constant in prayer, that you may be accounted worthy to escape all those future ills, and be able to stand in the presence of the son of God.

³¹ Then said Jesus, Simon, Simon, satan has demanded to shake you, and my disciples, like wheat in a sieve.

⁴⁴ you, who have the devil for your father, will execute the designs of your father: he was a murderer from the beginning, and deserted the truth, since he has no love for the truth: when he lyes, he speaks like himself: for he is a lyar, and the father of a lyar.

¹¹ Consider likewise the present season, that now it is high time to rouse out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed. ¹² the night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore throw off the habits of darkness, and be invested with the ornaments of light. ¹³ let us behave with decency as in open view; not with rioting and drunkenness, not with lewdness and brutality, not with strife and envy.

²⁷ lest the devil take hold of the opportunity.

¹¹ put on the set of divine armour, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

⁶ therefore let us not sleep away our time like others, but be vigilant and temperate. ⁷ they that are sober take their rest in the night, whilst they that are sots, are drunk in the night: ⁸ but let us, who enjoy the light, be temperate; let us be arm'd with the breast-plate of faith and charity, and for an helmet, with the hope of salvation.

⁹ and that the women be decent in their apparel, adorned with modesty and reserve, not with broider'd hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

¹⁵ however the women may be saved by educating their children, and persevering themselves in faith, in charity, in holiness and chastity. this may be depended upon as true.

² a bishop therefore ought to be of an unspotted character, to have but one wife, to be sober, prudent, grave, hospitable, and qualified for teaching:

¹¹ their wives must be likewise grave, free from scandal, sober, and always faithful.

¹⁷ however the Lord assisted and strengthen'd me, that the gospel might be confirm'd by my remonstrance, and all the nations might hear it; so that I was deliver'd out of the mouth of the lion:

⁸ but a lover of hospitality, humane, prudent, just, holy, temperate;

² but what is agreeable to sound doctrine: advise the aged to be prudent, grave, temperate, sound in faith,

⁴ but to lectures on virtue, that they may teach the young women prudence, to love their husbands,

⁶ that the word of God may not be blasphemed. the young men likewise exhort to be modest.

¹² teaching us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and to practise temperance, justice and piety in this present world;

⁷ Surrender therefore to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

¹³ Let your minds then be duely prepar'd, be vigilant, and constantly expect the favour you will meet with at the appearance of Jesus Christ.

⁷ The consummation of all things draws nigh. be temperate, be vigilant in prayer.

⁸ he that lives in sin, imitates the devil; for the devil was a sinner from the beginning. for this purpose the son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil. ⁹ whosoever is born of God, does not commit sin; for the divine principle remaineth in him: he will not sin, because he is born of God. ¹⁰ In this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil: he that does not practise virtue, and fraternal benevolence, is not of God.

⁹ the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, call'd the devil or satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were precipitated with him.

¹² therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. WO to the land, and to the sea: for the devil is come down unto you, in great rage, because he knows that his time is but short."

² and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil and satan, and bound him for a thousand years,

¹⁰ the devil that seduced them, shall be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
