⁶⁹ Peter sat without in the palace, and a damsel came to him, saying, "Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee." ⁷⁰ But he denied before them all saying, "I know not what thou sayest." ⁷¹ When he was gone out into the porch, another wench saw him, and said unto them that were there, "This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth." ⁷² And again he denied with an oath that he knew the man. ⁷³ And after a while, came unto him they that stood by, and said unto Peter, "Surely thou art even one of them, for thy speech betrayeth thee." ⁷⁴ Then began he to curse and to swear, that he knew not the man. And immediately the cock crew. ⁷⁵ And Peter remembered the words of Jesus, which he said unto him, "Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice": and went out at the doors and wept bitterly.

And anon after, they that stood by, said again to Peter, "Surely thou art one of them, for thou art of Galilee, and thy speech agreeth thereto." ⁷¹ And he began to curse and to swear, saying, "I know not this man of whom ye speak." ⁷² And again the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus said unto him. "Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice," and began to weep.

⁵⁴ Then took they him, and led him, and brought him to the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. ⁵⁵ When they had kindled a fire in the midst of the palace, and were set down together, Peter also sat down among them. ⁵⁶ And one of the wenches, as he sat, beheld him by the fire and set good eyesight on him, and said, "This same was also with him." ⁵⁷ Then he denied him, saying, "Woman I know him not." ⁵⁸ And after a little while, another saw him and said, "Thou art also of them." And Peter said, "Man I am not." ⁵⁹ And about the space of a hour after, another affirmed, saying, "Verily even this fellow was with him, for he is of Galilee." ⁶⁰ And Peter said, "Man, I know not what thou sayest." And immediately while he yet spake, the cock crew. ⁶¹ And the Lord turned back and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the words of the Lord, how he said unto him, "Before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice."

⁷ And lest I should be exalted out of measure through the abundance of revelations, there was given unto me of God unquietness of the flesh: the messenger of Satan to buffet me, because I should not be exalted out of measure. ⁸ For this thing besought I the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me, ⁹ and he said unto me, "My grace is sufficient for thee. For my strength is made perfect through weakness." Very gladly therefore will I rejoice of my weakness, that the strength of Christ may dwell in me. ¹⁰ Therefore have I delectation in infirmities, in rebukes, in need, in persecutions, in anguish, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.

¹⁶ At my first answering for myself, no man assisted me, but all forsook me. I pray God, that it may not be laid to their charges: ¹⁷ notwithstanding the Lord assisted me, and strengthed me, that by me the preaching should be fulfilled to the utmost and that all the gentiles should hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
