⁸ if that people against whom I have thus devised convert from their wickedness: Immediately, I repent of the plague, that I devised to bring upon them.

¹² Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, 'For a mischief did he bring them out: even for to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth.' Turn from thy fierce wrath, and have compassion over the wickedness of thy people.

³⁶ "For the LORD will do justice unto his people, and have compassion on his servants. For it shall be seen that their power shall fail, and at the last they shall be prisoned and forsaken.

¹⁸ And when the LORD raised up judges unto them, the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hands of their enemies all the days of the judge: for the LORD had compassion over their sorrowings which they had by the reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

¹⁵ But the children of Israel said unto the LORD, "We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever please thee, and deliver us only at this time." ¹⁶ And they put away the strange gods from them and served the LORD. And the misery of Israel grieved his soul.

³³ When thy people Israel be put to the worse before their enemies, because they have sinned against thee, and afterward turn again to thee and praise thy name, and pray and make supplication unto thee in this house: ³⁴ Then hear thou up to heaven and be merciful unto the sin of thy people Israel, and bring thee again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers.

⁶ Whereupon the lords of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, "The LORD is righteous."

¹³ Turn thee again, O LORD, at the last, and be gracious unto thy servants.

⁴⁵ He thought upon his covenant, and pitied them, according unto the multitude of his mercies;

¹⁴ For the LORD will avenge his people, and be gracious unto his servants.

¹⁶ Thus saith the LORD God: Wash and be clean; put away the wickedness of your imaginations out of my sight. Cease to do evil and learn to do well. ¹⁷ Study to do righteously, and help the oppressed. Avenge the fatherless and defend the cause of widows. Come, let us show each his grief to other and make an atonement, saith the LORD. ¹⁸ And so though your sins be like to purple, they shall be made as white as snow; and though they be as red as scarlet, they shall be made like white wool. ¹⁹ If ye will agree and hearken, ye shall eat the best of the land, saith the LORD God.

³ Thus sayeth the LORD of Hosts the God of Israel. Amend your ways and your counsels, and I will let you dwell in this place. ⁴ Trust not in false lying words, saying, 'Here is the temple of the LORD, here is the temple of the LORD, here is the temple of the LORD.' ⁵ "For if ye will amend your ways and counsels, if ye will judge right betwixt a man and his neighbour; ⁶ If ye will not oppress the stranger, the fatherless and the widow; if ye will not shed innocent blood in this place; if ye will not cleave to strange gods to your own destruction; ⁷ then will I let you dwell in this place, yea in the land that I gave afore time unto your fathers forever.

⁶ seeing thou goest from me and turnest backward? Sayeth the LORD: Therefore I will stretch out mine hand against thee, to destroy thee, and I will not be entreated.

³ if peradventure they will hearken, and turn every man from his wicked way: that I may also repent of the plague, which I have determined to bring upon them, because of their wicked inventions.

¹³ Therefore amend your ways, and your advisements, and be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God: so shall the LORD repent of the plague, that he had devised against you.

¹⁹ Did Hezekiah king of Judah and the people of Judah put him to death for this? No verily, but rather feared the LORD, and made their prayer unto him. For the which cause also the LORD repented of the plague, that he had devised against them. Should we then do such a shameful deed against our souls?"

³ That when the house of Judah heareth of the plague, which I have devised for them, they may peradventure turn, every man from his wicked way, that I may forgive their offenses and sins."

¹⁰ If ye will dwell in this land, I shall build you up, and not break you down. I shall plant you, and not root you out. For I am pacified, as concerning the trouble that I have done to you.

²¹ And yet the wicked, if he turn from all his sins which he did, and keep all mine ordinances, and do justly and righteously; he shall live and not die.

¹¹ Tell them, 'As truly as I live, sayeth the LORD God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but much rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn you, turn you from your ungodly ways, O ye of the house of Israel. Oh, wherefore will ye die?'

¹³ If I say unto the righteous, that he shall surely live, and so he trust to his own righteousness, and do sin: then shall his righteousnesses be no more thought upon, but in the wickedness that he hath done he shall die.

⁸ What great things have I given thee, O Ephraim? How faithfully have I defended thee, O Israel? Have I dealt with thee as with Adam? Or have I entreated thee like Zeboim? No, my heart is otherwise minded. Yea, my mercy is to fervent:

¹³ And tear your hearts and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God. For he is full of mercy and compassion, long ere he be angry, and great in mercy and repentance when he is at the point to punish. ¹⁴ Who can tell whether the Lord will turn and have compassion and shall leave after him a blessing? Sacrifice, and drink offering unto the LORD your God.

³ So the LORD was gracious therein, and the LORD said, "Well, it shall not be." ⁴ Again, the LORD showed me this vision: behold, the LORD God called the fire to punish withal, and it devoured the great deep: yea, it consumed a part already. ⁵ Then said I, "O LORD God, hold thine hand: who should else help up Jacob that is brought so low?" ⁶ So the LORD was merciful therein, and the LORD God said, "Well, it shall not be."

⁵ The water compassed me even unto the very soul of me; the deep lay about me, and the weeds were wrapped about mine head. ⁶ And I went down unto the bottom of the hills, and was barred in with earth on every side forever. And yet thou, LORD my God, broughtest up my life again out of corruption. ⁷ When my soul fainted in me, I thought on the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, even into thy holy temple. ⁸ They that observe vain vanities, have forsaken him that was merciful unto them. ⁹ But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving, and will pay that that I have vowed, that saving cometh of the LORD." ¹⁰ And the LORD spake unto the fish: and it cast out Jonah again upon the dry land.

⁹ "Who can tell whether God will turn and repent, and cease from his fierce wrath, that we perish not?" ¹⁰ And when God saw their works, how they turned from their wicked ways, he repented on the evil which he said he would do unto them, and did it not.

² And he prayed unto the LORD and said, "O LORD, was not this my saying when I was yet in my country? And therefore I hasted rather to flee to Tarshish: for I knew well enough that thou wast a merciful god, full of compassion long before thou be angry, and of great mercy and repentest when thou art come to take punishment.

³ I tell you, Nay, but except ye repent, ye shall all in likewise perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen upon which the tower in Siloam fell and slew them: think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwell in Jerusalem? ⁵ I tell you, Nay: But except ye repent, ye all shall likewise perish."
