¹¹ A man’s insight gives him patience, and his virtue is to overlook an offense.

¹⁵ When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph bears a grudge? Then he will surely repay us for all the evil that we did to him.” ¹⁶ So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Before he died, your father commanded, ¹⁷ ‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I beg you, please forgive the transgression and sin of your brothers, for they did you wrong.’ So now, Joseph, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph wept. ¹⁸ His brothers also came to him, bowed down before him, and said, “We are your slaves!” ¹⁹ But Joseph replied, “Do not be afraid. Am I in the place of God? ²⁰ As for you, what you intended against me for evil, God intended for good, in order to accomplish a day like this—to preserve the lives of many people. ²¹ Therefore do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones.” So Joseph reassured his brothers and spoke kindly to them.

¹⁶ A fool’s anger is known at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.

²⁹ A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man promotes folly.

¹⁸ A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger calms dispute.

³² He who is slow to anger is better than a warrior, and he who controls his temper is greater than one who captures a city.

¹⁴ To start a quarrel is to release a flood; so abandon the dispute before it breaks out.

³ It is honorable for a man to resolve a dispute, but any fool will quarrel.

²¹ If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.

⁴⁴ But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, ⁴⁵ that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

²¹ Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?” ²² Jesus answered, “I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!

¹⁸ If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. ¹⁹ Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.” ²⁰ Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. For in so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head.” ²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

³² Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave us.

¹² Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. ¹³ Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as Christ forgave you.

¹⁹ So then, my beloved brothers, everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,
