¹⁷ Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who ignores reproof goes astray.

¹⁶ While he was still speaking, the king asked, “Have we made you the counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but he said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not heeded my advice.”

²⁵ because you neglected all my counsel, and wanted none of my correction, ²⁶ in turn I will mock your calamity; I will sneer when terror strikes you,

³⁰ They accepted none of my counsel; they despised all my reproof.

¹ My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; ² for they will add length to your days, years and peace to your life.

¹⁸ She is a tree of life to those who embrace her, and those who lay hold of her are blessed.

⁴ he taught me and said, “Let your heart lay hold of my words; keep my commands and you will live.

¹³ Hold on to instruction; do not let go. Guard it, for it is your life.

¹² and you will say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof!

²³ For this commandment is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way to life,

¹ Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.

¹⁰ Discipline is harsh for him who leaves the path; he who hates correction will die.

¹⁷ Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise—apply your mind to my knowledge— ¹⁸ for it is pleasing when you keep them within you and they are constantly on your lips. ¹⁹ So that your trust may be in the LORD, I instruct you today—yes, you.

¹ A man who remains stiff-necked after much reproof will suddenly be shattered beyond recovery.

⁶ Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, and do not tell the messenger that your vow was a mistake. Why should God be angry with your words and destroy the work of your hands?

²⁴ Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them I will liken to a wise man who built his house on the rock. ²⁵ The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock. ²⁶ But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. ²⁷ The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its collapse!”

²⁸ But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

¹ We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

²⁵ See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if the people did not escape when they refused Him who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject Him who warns us from heaven?

⁵ For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; ⁶ and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; ⁷ and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. ⁸ For if you possess these qualities and continue to grow in them, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ But whoever lacks these traits is nearsighted to the point of blindness, having forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. ¹⁰ Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure. For if you practice these things you will never stumble, ¹¹ and you will receive a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
