¹⁸ On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?”

³⁸ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” ³⁹ Jesus replied, “A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. ⁴⁰ For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. ⁴¹ The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now One greater than Jonah is here. ⁴² The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now One greater than Solomon is here.

¹ Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came and tested Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven. ² But He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘The weather will be fair, for the sky is red,’ ³ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but not the signs of the times. ⁴ A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” Then He left them and went away.

²³ When Jesus returned to the temple courts and began to teach, the chief priests and elders of the people came up to Him. “By what authority are You doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave You this authority?”

¹¹ Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, testing Him by demanding from Him a sign from heaven.

²⁷ After their return to Jerusalem, Jesus was walking in the temple courts, and the chief priests, scribes, and elders came up to Him. ²⁸ “By what authority are You doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave You the authority to do them?” ²⁹ As the crowds were increasing, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It seeks a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet.

²⁵ asked him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

³⁰ So they asked Him, “What sign then will You perform, so that we may see it and believe You? What will You do?

⁷ They had Peter and John brought in and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”

²⁸ “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us responsible for this man’s blood.”
