¹ “My spirit is broken; my days are extinguished; the grave awaits me. ² Surely mockers surround me, and my eyes must gaze at their rebellion. ³ Give me, I pray, the pledge You demand. Who else will be my guarantor? ⁴ You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore You will not exalt them. ⁵ If a man denounces his friends for a price, the eyes of his children will fail. ⁶ He has made me a byword among the people, a man in whose face they spit. ⁷ My eyes have grown dim with grief, and my whole body is but a shadow. ⁸ The upright are appalled at this, and the innocent are stirred against the godless. ⁹ Yet a righteous one holds to his way, and the one with clean hands grows stronger. ¹⁰ But come back and try again, all of you. For I will not find a wise man among you. ¹¹ My days have passed; my plans are broken off—even the desires of my heart. ¹² They have turned night into day, making light seem near in the face of darkness. ¹³ If I look for Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed in darkness, ¹⁴ and say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister,’ ¹⁵ where then is my hope? Who can see any hope for me? ¹⁶ Will it go down to the gates of Sheol? Will we go down together into the dust?”

¹¹ What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What is my future, that I should be patient?

¹³ If I look for Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed in darkness, ¹⁴ and say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister,’

¹⁷ My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to my own family.

¹⁶ After this, Job lived 140 years and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.

³ For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. ⁴ I am counted among those descending to the Pit. I am like a man without strength. ⁵ I am forsaken among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, who are cut off from Your care.

¹⁰ I said, “In the prime of my life I must go through the gates of Sheol and be deprived of the remainder of my years.” ¹¹ I said, “I will never again see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living; I will no longer look on mankind with those who dwell in this world. ¹² My dwelling has been picked up and removed from me like a shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver; He cuts me off from the loom; from day until night You make an end of me. ¹³ I composed myself until the morning. Like a lion He breaks all my bones; from day until night You make an end of me. ¹⁴ I chirp like a swallow or crane; I moan like a dove. My eyes grow weak as I look upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; be my security.”

¹⁶ For I will not accuse you forever, nor will I always be angry; for then the spirit of man would grow weak before Me, with the breath of those I have made.

⁶ Because the LORD had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival would provoke her and taunt her viciously. ⁷ And this went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival taunted her until she wept and would not eat.

⁴ I am a laughingstock to my friends, though I called on God, and He answered. The righteous and upright man is a laughingstock.

⁹ Would it be well when He examined you? Could you deceive Him like a man?

²⁰ My friends are my scoffers as my eyes pour out tears to God.

³ Bear with me while I speak; then, after I have spoken, you may go on mocking.

¹³ His soul will dwell in prosperity, and his descendants will inherit the land.

¹⁴ I paced about as for my friend or brother; I was bowed down with grief, like one mourning for his mother. ¹⁵ But when I stumbled, they assembled in glee; they gathered together against me. Assailants I did not know slandered me without ceasing. ¹⁶ Like godless jesters at a feast, they gnashed their teeth at me.

¹ He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

³⁹ And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!” ⁴¹ In the same way, the chief priests, scribes, elders, and Pharisees mocked Him, saying, ⁴² “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. If He is the King of Israel, let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him. ⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” ⁴⁴ In the same way, even the robbers who were crucified with Him berated Him.

⁹ I will guarantee his safety. You may hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then may I bear the guilt before you all my life.

³² Indeed, your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father, saying, ‘If I do not return him to you, I will bear the guilt before you, my father, all my life.’

³³ Nor is there a mediator between us, to lay his hand upon us both.

¹²² Ensure Your servant’s well-being; do not let the arrogant oppress me.

¹¹ and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and need like a bandit.

¹⁵ He who puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but the one who hates indebtedness is secure.

¹⁸ A man lacking judgment strikes hands in pledge and puts up security for his neighbor.

¹⁶ Take the garment of the one who posts security for a stranger; get collateral if it is for a foreigner.

²⁶ Do not be one who gives pledges, who puts up security for debts.

¹⁴ I chirp like a swallow or crane; I moan like a dove. My eyes grow weak as I look upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; be my security.”

²² Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.

³¹ Now someone told David: “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David pleaded, “O LORD, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness!”

¹⁴ Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the LORD had purposed to thwart the good counsel of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.

¹⁶ While he was still speaking, the king asked, “Have we made you the counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but he said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not heeded my advice.”

¹⁴ The LORD has poured into her a spirit of confusion. Egypt has been led astray in all she does, as a drunkard staggers through his own vomit.

²⁵ At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

¹¹ He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

⁸ as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see, and ears that could not hear, to this very day.”

²⁰ Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

⁵ You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,

⁶⁵ Among those nations you will find no repose, not even a resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, and a despairing soul.

¹² Nevertheless, for the sake of your father David, I will not do it during your lifetime; I will tear it out of the hand of your son.

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them; they will hope for their last breath.”

²¹ I will be partial to no one, nor will I flatter any man. ²² For I do not know how to flatter, or my Maker would remove me in an instant.

² They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips and a double heart. ³ May the LORD cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue.

¹⁹ He who reveals secrets is a constant gossip; avoid the one who babbles with his lips.

⁵ A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

¹⁷ All the while our eyes were failing as we looked in vain for help. We watched from our towers for a nation that could not save us.

⁵ As you know, we never used words of flattery or any pretext for greed. God is our witness!

²⁷ Why did you run away secretly and deceive me, without even telling me? I would have sent you away with joy and singing, with tambourines and harps.

⁷ then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, and I will banish from My presence this temple I have sanctified for My Name. Then Israel will become an object of scorn and ridicule among all peoples.

⁹ And now they mock me in song; I have become a byword among them.

¹⁴ You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.

¹² At their feasts are the lyre and harp, tambourines and flutes and wine. They disregard the actions of the LORD and fail to see the work of His hands.

⁸ You have bound me, and it has become a witness; my frailty rises up and testifies against me.

¹⁶ My face is red with weeping, and deep shadows ring my eyes;

⁷ My eyes fail from grief; they grow dim because of all my foes.

⁹ Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eyes fail from sorrow, my soul and body as well. ¹⁰ For my life is consumed with grief and my years with groaning; my iniquity has drained my strength, and my bones are wasting away.

²³ I am fading away like a lengthening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.

¹² For who knows what is good for a man during the few days in which he passes through his fleeting life like a shadow? Who can tell a man what will come after him under the sun?

¹⁷ Because of this, our hearts are faint; because of these, our eyes grow dim—

¹⁹ The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent mock them:

³⁰ that godless men should not rule or lay snares for the people.

¹² Behold, these are the wicked—always carefree as they increase their wealth. ¹³ Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure; in innocence I have washed my hands. ¹⁴ For I am afflicted all day long and punished every morning. ¹⁵ If I had said, “I will speak this way,” then I would have betrayed Your children.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor and the denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be astonished at the matter; for one official is watched by a superior, and others higher still are over them.

¹³ Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil, and You cannot tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. But since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.

³³ O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways!

⁵ Didn’t Abraham tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this in the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands.”

³⁰ He will deliver even one who is not innocent, rescuing him through the cleanness of your hands.”

⁴ He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear deceitfully.

⁶ I wash my hands in innocence that I may go about Your altar, O LORD,

¹³ Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure; in innocence I have washed my hands.

⁷ They go from strength to strength, until each appears before God in Zion.

¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and a shield; the LORD gives grace and glory; He withholds no good thing from those who walk with integrity.

¹⁸ The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday.

¹⁶ A wise man fears and turns from evil, but a fool is careless and reckless.

¹⁵ When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; even though you multiply your prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood. ¹⁶ Wash and cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds from My sight. Stop doing evil!

⁸ And there will be a highway called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not travel it—only those who walk in the Way—and fools will not stray onto it. ⁹ No lion will be there, and no vicious beast will go up on it. Such will not be found there, but the redeemed will walk upon it. ¹⁰ So the redeemed of the LORD will return and enter Zion with singing, crowned with everlasting joy. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee.

²⁹ He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. ³⁰ Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. ³¹ But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.

² And seeing some of His disciples eating with hands that were defiled—that is, unwashed—they found fault.

⁹ But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. ¹⁰ That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

⁵ who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they did not belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But their departure made it clear that none of them belonged to us.

²⁹ Reconsider; do not be unjust. Reconsider, for my righteousness is at stake.

² “Truly then you are the people with whom wisdom itself will die!

⁹ What do you know that we do not? What do you understand that is not clear to us?

⁴ You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore You will not exalt them.

⁹ It is not only the old who are wise, or the elderly who understand justice.

⁷ After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken about Me accurately, as My servant Job has.

¹⁸ So you will again distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.”

⁵ I say this to your shame. Is there really no one among you wise enough to arbitrate between his brothers?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end without hope.

²⁵ My days are swifter than a runner; they flee without seeing good. ²⁶ They sweep by like boats of papyrus, like an eagle swooping down on its prey.

⁹ A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.

²¹ Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose of the LORD will prevail.

¹⁰ Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, for in Sheol, where you are going, there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.

¹⁰ Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted; state a proposal, but it will not happen. For God is with us.”

¹⁰ I said, “In the prime of my life I must go through the gates of Sheol and be deprived of the remainder of my years.”

³⁷ Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it?

¹³ I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, how often I planned to come to you (but have been prevented from visiting until now), in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

¹⁵ Confident of this, I planned to visit you first, so that you might receive a double blessing. ¹⁶ I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to return to you from Macedonia, and then to have you help me on my way to Judea. ¹⁷ When I planned this, did I do it carelessly? Or do I make my plans by human standards, so as to say “Yes, yes” when I really mean “No, no”?

¹³ Come now, you who say, “Today and tomorrow let us go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.” ¹⁴ You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. ¹⁵ Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord is willing, let us live and do this or that.”

⁶⁷ In the morning you will say, ‘If only it were evening!’ and in the evening you will say, ‘If only it were morning!’—because of the dread in your hearts of the terrifying sights you will see.

³ So I am allotted months of futility, and nights of misery are appointed me. ⁴ When I lie down I think: ‘When will I get up?’ But the night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn.

¹³ When I think my bed will comfort me and my couch will ease my complaint, ¹⁴ then You frighten me with dreams and terrify me with visions,

¹⁴ When daylight is gone, the murderer rises to kill the poor and needy; in the night he is like a thief. ¹⁵ The eye of the adulterer watches for twilight. Thinking, ‘No eye will see me,’ he covers his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses; by day they shut themselves in, never to experience the light.

¹³ For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest

²¹ before I go—never to return—to a land of darkness and gloom, ²² to a land of utter darkness, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”

¹⁴ When a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, until my renewal comes.

¹ “My spirit is broken; my days are extinguished; the grave awaits me.

²³ Yes, I know that You will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for all the living.

¹⁴ Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous. Wait patiently for the LORD!

⁸ If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.

² Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest, lying down in death.

²⁵ The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. ²⁶ It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.

²⁸ So man wastes away like something rotten, like a moth-eaten garment.

²⁶ Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.

²⁶ But together they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.

³² He is carried to the grave, and watch is kept over his tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley are sweet to him; everyone follows behind him, and those before him are without number.

²⁰ The womb forgets them; the worm feeds on them; they are remembered no more. So injustice is like a broken tree.

³⁰ My skin grows black and peels, and my bones burn with fever.

¹⁰ For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay.

⁹ that he should live on forever and not see decay.

¹¹ Your pomp has been brought down to Sheol, along with the music of your harps. Maggots are your bed and worms your blanket.

²⁷ because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay. ²⁸ You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.’ ²⁹ Brothers, I can tell you with confidence that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. ³⁰ But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that from his descendants according to the flesh He would raise up the Christ to seat Him on his throne. ³¹ Foreseeing this, David spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not abandoned to Hades, nor did His body see decay.

³⁴ In fact, God raised Him from the dead, never to see decay. As He has said: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’ ³⁵ So also, He says in another Psalm: ‘You will not let Your Holy One see decay.’ ³⁶ For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep. His body was buried with his fathers and saw decay. ³⁷ But the One whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.

⁴² So will it be with the resurrection of the dead: What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable.

⁵³ For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. ⁵⁴ When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come to pass: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

⁶ Is your reverence not your confidence, and the uprightness of your ways your hope?

¹⁵ Though He slay me, I will hope in Him. I will still defend my ways to His face.

¹⁰ He tears me down on every side until I am gone; He uproots my hope like a tree.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from raging, and there the weary find rest. ¹⁸ The captives enjoy their ease; they do not hear the voice of the oppressor. ¹⁹ Both small and great are there, and the slave is freed from his master.

¹³ It devours patches of his skin; the firstborn of death devours his limbs. ¹⁴ He is torn from the shelter of his tent and is marched off to the king of terrors.

¹⁸ to preserve his soul from the Pit and his life from perishing by the sword. ¹⁹ A man is also chastened on his bed with pain and constant distress in his bones, ²⁰ so that he detests his bread, and his soul loathes his favorite food. ²¹ His flesh wastes away from sight, and his hidden bones protrude. ²² He draws near to the Pit, and his life to the messengers of death. ²³ Yet if there is a messenger on his side, one mediator in a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him, ²⁴ to be gracious to him and say, ‘Spare him from going down to the Pit; I have found his ransom,’ ²⁵ then his flesh is refreshed like a child’s; he returns to the days of his youth. ²⁶ He prays to God and finds favor; he sees God’s face and shouts for joy, and God restores His righteousness to that man. ²⁷ Then he sings before men with these words: ‘I have sinned and perverted what was right; yet I did not get what I deserved. ²⁸ He redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit, and I will live to see the light.’

⁴ I am counted among those descending to the Pit. I am like a man without strength. ⁵ I am forsaken among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, who are cut off from Your care. ⁶ You have laid me in the lowest Pit, in the darkest of the depths. ⁷ Your wrath weighs heavily upon me; all Your waves have submerged me. Selah ⁸ You have removed my friends from me; You have made me repulsive to them; I am confined and cannot escape.

⁷ Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide Your face from me, or I will be like those who descend to the Pit.

¹⁷ Surely for my own welfare I had such great anguish; but Your love has delivered me from the pit of oblivion, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back. ¹⁸ For Sheol cannot thank You; Death cannot praise You. Those who descend to the Pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness.

¹¹ Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Look, they are saying, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished; we are cut off.’

⁶ To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!

⁹ Indeed, we felt we were under the sentence of death, in order that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God, who raises the dead.
