¹⁰ And then many will stumble and fall, and will betray one another, and hate one another.

²¹ "And brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against their parents and put them to death.

"This very night even you will all stumble and fall away from me; for it is written, 'I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' ³² But after I am raised up I will go before you into Galilee." ³³ "If they all stumble and fall away from you," answered Peter, "I will never do so!" ³⁴ Jesus said to him, "In solemn truth I tell you that on this very night, before cockcrow, you will deny me three times!"

¹⁷ but because they have no root in themselves they last for a time; but when suffering or persecution ensues because of the Word, they at once fall away.
