⁷ The rich rule over the poor and the borrower is servant to the lender.

¹ Now a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, Your servant my husband is dead and you know that your servant feared Jehovah and the creditor has come to take my two children to him to be bondmen.

⁴ There were also who said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute upon our fields and our vineyards. ⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our sons as their sons. And behold, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already. Neither is it in our power to help it, for other men have our fields and our vineyards.

³¹ He who oppresses a poor man reproaches his maker, but he who has mercy on a needy man honors him.

²³ A poor man uses entreaties, but a rich man answers roughly.

¹⁶ He who oppresses a poor man to his increase and he who gives to a rich man, comes only to want.

²² Do not rob a poor man, because he is poor, nor oppress an afflicted man in the gate.

² And it will be, as with the people, so with the priest, as with the servant, so with his master, as with the maid, so with her mistress, as with the buyer, so with the seller, as with the creditor, so with the debtor, as with the taker of interest, so with the giver of interest to him.

⁶ Jehovah says thus: For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four, I will not turn away the punishment of it, because they have sold a righteous man for silver and a needy man for a pair of shoes–

¹ Hear this word, you* cows of Bashan, who are in the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their lords, Bring and let us drink.

¹¹ Inasmuch therefore as you* trample upon the poor and take exactions of wheat from him. You* have built houses of hewn stone, but you* will not dwell in them. You* have planted pleasant vineyards, but you* will not drink the wine of it.
¹² For I know how great are your* transgressions and how mighty are your* sins–you* who afflict the just man, who take a bribe and who turn aside the needy in the gate.

⁴ Hear this, O you* who would swallow up a needy man and cause the poor of the land to fail,

⁶ that we may buy the poor for silver and a needy man for a pair of shoes and sell the refuse of the wheat?

²⁵ But he did not have anything to repay him with, so his lord commanded him and his wife and children and all things, as many things as he was holding, to be sold and the money to be repaid to him.

⁶ But you have dishonored the poor. Are the rich not oppressing you? And are they themselves not dragging you into the courts?

¹ Come now you rich, weep, howling in your miseries, in those which are coming upon you.

⁴ Behold, the wages of the workers who mowed your farmlands, the wages which have been defrauded by you, are crying out against you and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
