¹ When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling. He exalted himself in Israel, but when he offended in Baal, he died.
² And now they sin more and more and have made themselves molten images of their silver, even idols according to their own understanding, all of them the work of the craftsmen. They say of them, Let the men who sacrifice kiss the calves.
³ Therefore they will be as the morning cloud and as the dew that passes away early, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing-floor and as the smoke out of the chimney.
⁴ Yet I am Jehovah your God from the land of Egypt and you will know no god but me and besides me there is no savior. ⁵ I knew you in the wilderness, in the land of great drought. ⁶ According to their pasture, so they were filled. They were filled and their heart was exalted. Therefore they have forgotten me.
⁷ Therefore I am to them as a lion. As a leopard I will watch by the way. ⁸ I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her cubs and will tear the encasement of their heart. And there I will devour them like a lioness. The wild beast will tear them. ⁹ It is your destruction, O Israel, that you are against me, against your help.
¹⁰ Where now is your king, that he may save you in all your cities and your judges, of whom you said, Give me a king and rulers? ¹¹ I have given you a king in my anger and have taken him away in my wrath.
¹² The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up. His sin is laid up in store. ¹³ The sorrows of a travailing woman will come upon him. He is an unwise son, for it is time he should not abide in the place of the breaking forth of sons.
¹⁴ I will ransom them from the power of Sheol. I will redeem them from death. O death, where are your plagues? O Sheol, where is your sting? Repentance will be hid from my eyes.
¹⁵ Though he is fruitful among his brothers, an east wind will come, the breath of Jehovah coming up from the wilderness and his spring will become dry and his fountain will be dried up. He will make spoil of the treasure of all desirable vessels. ¹⁶ Samaria will bear her guilt, for she has rebelled against her God. They will fall by the sword. Their infants will be dashed in pieces and their women with child will be ripped up.

¹⁷ but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you will not eat from it. For in the day that you eat from it, you will surely die.
¹⁸ On the west side will be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies. And the ruler of the sons of Ephraim will be Elishama the son of Ammihud. ¹⁹ And his army and those who were numbered of them, were forty thousand and five hundred. ²⁰ And next to him will be the tribe of Manasseh. And the ruler of the sons of Manasseh will be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. ²¹ And his army and those who were numbered of them, were thirty-two thousand and two hundred.

²² And the standard of the camp of the sons of Ephraim set forward according to their armies and over his army was Elishama the son of Ammihud.

⁸ of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun;

¹⁶ These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

¹⁶ Let Jehovah, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, ¹⁷ who may go out before them and who may come in before them and who may lead them out and who may bring them in, that the congregation of Jehovah is not as sheep which have no shepherd.
¹⁸ And Jehovah said to Moses, You take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit and lay your hand upon him, ¹⁹ and set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation and give him a charge in their sight. ²⁰ And you will put of your honor upon him, that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may obey. ²¹ And he will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before Jehovah. At his word will they go out and at his word they will come in, both he and all the sons of Israel with him, even all the congregation.
²² And Moses did as Jehovah commanded him. And he took Joshua and set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation. ²³ And he laid his hands upon him and gave him a charge, as Jehovah spoke by Moses.

⁷ And Jehovah said to Joshua, This day I will begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

¹ And the men of Ephraim said to him, Why have you done thus to us, that you did not call us when you went to fight with Midian? And they chided with him sharply.

¹ And the men of Ephraim were gathered together and passed northward. And they said to Jephthah, Why did you pass over to fight against the sons of Ammon and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house upon you with fire.

¹⁷ And Samuel said, Though you were little in your own sight, were you not made the head of the tribes of Israel? And Jehovah anointed you king over Israel.

²⁵ Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim and dwelt in it. And he went out from there and built Penuel.

²⁹ And in the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab the son of Omri began to reign over Israel. And Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-two years. ³⁰ And Ahab the son of Omri did what was evil in the sight of Jehovah above all who were before him.
³¹ And it happened, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took a wife, Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians and went and served Baal and worshiped him.
³² And he reared up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he had built in Samaria. ³³ And Ahab made the Asherah. And Ahab did yet more to provoke Jehovah, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

¹⁸ And he answered, I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house, in that you* have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah and you have followed the Baals.
¹⁹ Now therefore send and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, who eat at Jezebel's table.

¹⁶ And they forsook all the commandments of Jehovah their God and made for them molten images, even two calves and made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal.
¹⁷ And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire and used divination and enchantments and sold themselves to do what was evil in the sight of Jehovah to provoke him to anger.
¹⁸ Therefore Jehovah was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. There was none left but only the tribe of Judah.

¹² Before destruction the heart of man is haughty and before honor is humility.

² For all these things my hand has made and all these things came to be, says Jehovah.
But to this man I will look, even to him who is poor and of a crushed spirit and who trembles at my word.

² The more the prophets called them, the more they went from them. They sacrificed to the Baals and burned incense to graven images.

¹¹ Because everyone who is exalting himself will be humbled, and he who is humbling himself will be exalted.

¹² Because of this, just-as sin entered into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death has gone forth to all men, in which all have sinned.

¹⁴ For the love of Christ is holding us together with him, having judged this thing: if one died on behalf of all, consequently, all died;

¹⁴ And behold, you* have risen up in your* fathers' stead, an brood of sinful men, to consume yet the fierce anger of Jehovah toward Israel.

¹ Then Samuel took the vial of oil and poured it upon his head and kissed him and said, Is it not that Jehovah has anointed you to be prince over his inheritance?

¹⁸ Yet I have reserved for me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal and every mouth which has not kissed him.

¹³ and said to them, You* will not bring in the captives here. For you* propose what will bring upon us a trespass against Jehovah, to add to our sins and to our trespass. For our trespass is great and there is fierce wrath against Israel.

²³ And he did not humble himself before Jehovah, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself, but this same Amon trespassed more and more.

¹² Kiss the Son, lest he is angry and you* perish in the way, because his wrath will soon be kindled. All those who take refuge in him are fortunate.

⁴ Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. ⁵ They have mouths, but they do not speak. They have eyes, but they do not see. ⁶ They have ears, but they do not hear. They have noses, but they do not smell. ⁷ They have hands, but they do not handle. They have feet, but they do not walk, nor do they speak through their throat.
⁸ Those who make them will be like them. Yes, everyone who trusts in them.

¹⁷ They have ears, but they do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths.

⁵ Why will you* still be stricken, that you* revolt more and more? The whole head is sick and the whole heart faint.

¹ Woe to the rebellious sons, says Jehovah, who take counsel, but not of me and who make a league, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin,

¹⁷ And the residue of it he makes a god, even his graven image. He falls down to it and worships and prays to it and says, Deliver me, for you are my god.
¹⁸ They do not know, nor do they consider. For he has shut their eyes, that they cannot see and their hearts, that they cannot understand. ¹⁹ And none calls to mind, nor is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire. Yes, I have also baked bread upon the coals of it. I have roasted flesh and eaten it. And shall I make the residue of it an abomination? Shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
²⁰ He feeds on ashes. A deceived heart has turned him aside. And he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

²⁰ Assemble yourselves and come, draw near together, you* that are escaped of the nations. They have no knowledge that carry the wood of their graven image and pray to a god that cannot save.

⁶ Such as lavish gold out of the bag and weigh silver in the balance, they hire a goldsmith and he makes it a god. They fall down, yes, they worship.

⁸ Remember this and show yourselves men. Bring it again to mind, O you* transgressors.

⁴ They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it not move.

⁸ But they are together stupid and foolish, the instruction of idols! It is but a block of wood.

⁸ For she did not know that I gave her the grain and the new wine and the oil and multiplied to her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.

⁴ They have set up kings, but not by me. They have made rulers and I knew it not. They have made themselves idols of their silver and their gold, that they may be cut off.

⁶ For even this is from Israel: the workman made it and it is no God. Yes, the calf of Samaria will be broken in pieces.

¹ Israel is a luxuriant vine that puts forth his fruit. According to the abundance of his fruit he has multiplied his altars. According to the goodness of their land they have made good pillars.

⁶ And the sword will fall upon their cities and will consume their bars and devour them, because of their own counsels.

¹⁸ What profits the graven image, that the maker of it has engraved it, the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he who fashions its form trusts in it, to make dumb idols?
¹⁹ Woe to him who says to the wood, Awake! To the dumb stone, Arise! Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

²² They were foolish, claiming to be wise, ²³ and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into the likeness of an image of corruptible man and of birds and of four footed mammals and of reptiles.
²⁴ Hence also, God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts into uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves. ²⁵ They exchanged the truth of God into a lie and worshiped and gave-divine service to the created thing contrary to the one who created it, who is gracious forever. Amen.

⁵ But you store up wrath for yourself according to your hardness and unrepentant heart in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

⁴ But what does the divine-answer say to him? ‘I have left to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’

¹³ But evil men and impostors will be progressing from bad on to worse, misleading and being misled.

⁴ The wicked are not so, because they are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

² As smoke is driven away, so drive them away. As wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

¹² who said, Let us take to ourselves in possession the habitations of God.
¹³ O my God, make them like the whirling dust, as stubble before the wind, ¹⁴ as the fire that burns the forest and as the flame that sets the mountains on fire. ¹⁵ So pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your storm.
¹⁶ Fill their faces with confusion, that they may seek your name, O Jehovah.
¹⁷ Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever. Yes, let them be confounded and perish,

¹³ The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters, but he will rebuke them. And they will flee far off and will be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind and like the whirling dust before the storm.

¹⁵ Behold, I have made you as a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth. You will thresh the mountains and beat them small and will make the hills as chaff. ¹⁶ You will winnow them and the wind will carry them away and the whirlwind will scatter them. And you will rejoice in Jehovah. You will glory in the Holy One of Israel.

³⁵ Then the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver and the gold, was broken in pieces together and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors. And the wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them. And the stone that killed* the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

⁴ O Ephraim, what shall I do to you? O Judah, what shall I do to you? For your* goodness is as a morning cloud and as the dew that goes away early.

² I am Jehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. ³ You will have no other gods before me.

⁹ There will be no strange god in you, nor will you worship any foreign god.
¹⁰ I am Jehovah your God who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.

³ For I am Jehovah your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I have given Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in your stead.

¹⁰ You* are my witnesses, says Jehovah and my servant whom I have chosen, that you* may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me there was no God formed, nor will there be after me.
¹¹ I, even I, am Jehovah and besides me there is no savior. ¹² I have declared and I have saved and I have shown and there was no strange god among you*. Therefore you* are my witnesses, says Jehovah and I am God. ¹³ Yes, since the day was I am he and there is none that can deliver out of my hand. I will work and who can hinder it?

⁶ Jehovah says thus, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, Jehovah of hosts: I am the first and I am the last and besides me there is no God.
⁷ And who, as I, will call and will declare it and set it in order for me, since I established the people of old? And let them declare the things that are coming and that will happen. ⁸ Do not fear, nor be afraid. Have I not declared to you of old and shown it? And you* are my witnesses. Is there a God besides me? Yes, there is no Rock. I do not know any.

²¹ Declare and bring it forth. Yes, let them take counsel together. Who has shown this from long-ago? Who has declared it long since? Have not I, Jehovah? And there is no other God besides me, a just God and a Savior. There is none besides me. ²² Look to me and be you* saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God and there is none else.

⁹ But I am Jehovah your God from the land of Egypt. I will yet again make you to dwell in tents, as in the days of the solemn feast.

¹² And there is salvation in none other; for neither is there any other name, that has been given among men, in which it is essential for us to be saved.

²⁵ And God saw the sons of Israel and God took knowledge of them.

⁷ For Jehovah your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years Jehovah your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.

¹⁵ who led you through the great and terrible wilderness–fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where was no water–who brought you forth water out of the rock of flint,

¹⁰ He found him in a desert land and in the waste howling wilderness. He compassed him about. He cared for him. He kept him as the apple of his eye.

⁶ Because Jehovah knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

⁷ I will be glad and rejoice in your loving kindness, for you have seen my affliction. You have known my soul in adversities,

¹ O God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you, my flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where is no water.

³ When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, you knew my path. In the way in which I walk they have hidden a snare for me.

² Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Jehovah says thus, I remember for you the kindness of your youth, the love of your espousals, how you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

⁶ Nor did they say, Where is Jehovah who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that none passed through and where no man dwelt?

⁷ Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble and he knows those who take refuge in him.

³ but if anyone loves God, this one has been known by him.

⁹ But now having known God, but rather having been known by God, how are you turning back again to the weak and poor fundamental principles? Do you again wish to be enslaved to these anew?

¹⁰ And it will be, when Jehovah your God will bring you into the land which he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, to give you, great and pleasant cities, which you did not build, ¹¹ and houses full of all good things, which you did not fill and cisterns hewn out, which you did not hew, vineyards and olive trees, which you did not plant and you will eat and be full, ¹² then beware lest you forget Jehovah, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

¹² Lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built pleasant houses and dwelt in it, ¹³ and when your herds and your flocks multiply and your silver and your gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, ¹⁴ then your heart be lifted up and you forget Jehovah your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage,

¹³ He made him ride on the high places of the earth and he ate the increase of the field and he made him to suck honey out of the rock and oil out of the flinty rock, ¹⁴ butter of the herd and milk of the flock, with fat of lambs and rams of the breed of Bashan and goats, with the finest of the wheat and of the blood of the grape you drank wine.
¹⁵ But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked. You have grown fat. You have grown thick. You have become sleek. Then he forsook God who made him and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

¹⁸ You are unmindful of the Rock that fathered you and have forgotten God who gave you birth.

²⁵ And they took fortified cities and a fat land and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns hewn out, vineyards and olive-groves and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in your great goodness.
²⁶ Nevertheless they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their back and killed your prophets who testified against them to turn them again to you and they worked great provocations.

³⁵ For they have not served you in their kingdom and in your great goodness that you gave them and in the large and fat land which you gave before them, neither did they turn from their wicked works.

⁴ The wicked man, in the pride of his countenance, says, He will not require it. All his thoughts are, There is no God.

¹⁰ For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not been mindful of the rock of your strength.
Therefore you plant pleasant plants and set it with foreign slips.

³¹ O generation, see you* the word of Jehovah. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why do my people say, We have broken loose. We will come no more to you? ³² Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

¹³ And I will visit upon her the days of the Baals, to which she burned incense when she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels and went after her lovers and forgot me, says Jehovah.

¹³ Jehovah will go forth as a mighty man. He will stir up his zeal like a man of war. He will cry, yes, he will shout aloud. He will do mightily against his enemies.

⁶ Therefore a lion out of the forest will kill them; a wolf of the evenings will destroy them; a leopard will watch against their cities. Everyone who goes out from there will be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many and their backslidings are increased.

¹⁰ He is to me as a bear lying in wait, as a lion in concealed places.

¹⁴ For I will be to Ephraim as a lion and as a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will tear and go away, I will carry off and there will be none to deliver.

² And he said, Jehovah will roar from Zion and utter his voice from Jerusalem and the pastures of the shepherds will mourn and the top of Carmel will wither.

⁴ Will a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he has taken nothing?

⁸ The lion has roared, who will not fear? The lord Jehovah has spoken, who can but prophesy?

⁸ Hushai said moreover, You know your father and his men, that they are mighty men and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. And your father is a man of war and will not lodge with the people.

²² Now consider this, you* who forget God, lest I tear you* in pieces and there is none to deliver:

¹³ The boar out of the wood ravages it and the wild beasts of the field feed on it.

¹² Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs, rather than a fool in his folly.

²⁹ Their roaring will be like a lioness. They will roar like young lions. Yes, they will roar and lay hold of the prey and carry it away safe and there will be none to deliver.

⁹ All you* beasts of the field, come to devour, yes, all you* beasts in the forest.

⁹ Is my heritage to me as a speckled bird of prey? Are the birds of prey against her all around? Go you*, assemble all the beasts of the field; bring them to devour.

¹ I saw the Lord standing beside the altar. And he said, Strike the capitals, that the thresholds may shake and break them in pieces on the head of all of them and I will kill the last of them with the sword. There will not one of them flee away and there will not one of them escape.
² Though they dig into Sheol, from there my hand will take them and though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down. ³ And though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out from there. And though they are hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, from there I will command the serpent and it will bite them.

²⁶ There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides upon the heavens for your help and in his excellency on the skies.

²⁹ You are fortunate, O Israel. Who is like you, a people saved by Jehovah, the shield of your help and the sword of your excellency! And your enemies will submit themselves to you and you will tread upon their high places.

⁷ And it was so, because the sons of Israel had sinned against Jehovah their God who brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh King of Egypt and had feared other gods, ⁸ and walked in the statutes of the nations, whom Jehovah cast out from before the sons of Israel and of the kings of Israel, which they made.
⁹ And the sons of Israel did things secretly that were not right against Jehovah their God. And they built for them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city. ¹⁰ And they set up for them pillars and Asherim upon every high hill and under every green tree, ¹¹ and there they burnt incense in all the high places, as the nations did whom Jehovah carried away before them. And they worked wicked things to provoke Jehovah to anger. ¹² And they served idols, of which Jehovah had said to them, You* will not do this thing.
¹³ Yet Jehovah testified to Israel and to Judah, by every prophet and every seer, saying, Turn from your* evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your* fathers and which I sent to you* by my servants the prophets. ¹⁴ Notwithstanding, they would not hear, but stiffened their neck, like the neck of their fathers who did not believe in Jehovah their God.
¹⁵ And they rejected his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and his testimonies which he testified to them. And they followed vanity and became vain and went after the nations that were all around them, concerning whom Jehovah had charged them that they should not do like them.
¹⁶ And they forsook all the commandments of Jehovah their God and made for them molten images, even two calves and made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal.

²⁰ Our soul has waited for Jehovah. He is our help and our shield.

¹ God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

¹ I will lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where will my help come? ² My help is from Jehovah, who made heaven and earth.

⁵ He who has the God of Jacob for his help is fortunate, whose hope is in Jehovah his God,

³² He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who would destroy his own soul does it.

³⁶ But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul.
All those who hate me love death.

⁹ The show of their countenance witnesses against them and they declare their sin as Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have done evil to themselves.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked! It is ill with him, for what his hands have done will be done to him.

¹⁷ Have you not procured this to yourself, in that you have forsaken Jehovah your God when he led you by the way?

¹⁹ Your own wickedness will discipline you and your backslidings will reprove you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that you have forsaken Jehovah your God and that my fear is not in you, says the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

¹⁸ Your way and your practices have procured these things to you. This is your wickedness, for it is bitter, for it reaches to your heart.

²⁵ Your* iniquities have turned away these things and your* sins have withheld good from you*.

⁴ Yet I am Jehovah your God from the land of Egypt and you will know no god but me and besides me there is no savior.

¹ O Israel, return to Jehovah your God, for you have fallen by your iniquity.

⁹ You* say, And now, I beseech you*, entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us; this has been by your* means. Will he accept any of your* persons? says Jehovah of hosts.

³ The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is gracious, who has blessed us in every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, ⁴ just-as he chose us in him before the conception of the world, for us to be holy and unblemished in his sight in love. ⁵ Having predetermined us to the sonship through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the delight of his will,

³ For we were also previously foolish, disobedient, being misled, serving in various lusts and sensual-delights, leading lives in malice and envy, spiteful, hating one another. ⁴ But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love of mankind had appeared: ⁵ he saved us (not from any works done in righteousness, which we practiced), but according to his mercy, through the full-washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, ⁶ which he poured out upon us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior; ⁷ in order that we might become heirs according to the hope of everlasting life, having been made righteous in that grace.

³⁷ And he will say, Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge, ³⁸ which ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you*, let them be your* protection.
³⁹ See now that I, even I, am he and there is no god with me. I kill and I make alive. I wound and I heal. And there is none that can deliver out of my hand.

¹⁶ And Jehovah raised up judges who saved them out of the hand of those who despoiled them. ¹⁷ And yet they did not listen to their judges, for they played the prostitute after other gods and bowed themselves to them. They turned aside quickly out of the way in which their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah. They did not do so.
¹⁸ And when Jehovah raised up judges for them, then Jehovah was with the judge and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. For Jehovah regretted because of their groaning because of those who oppressed them and distressed them.

⁵ And they said to him, Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make for us a king to judge us like all the nations.
⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to Jehovah.

¹⁹ But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel. And they said, No, but we will have a king over us ²⁰ that we also may be like all the nations and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.

¹¹ And Jehovah sent Jerubbaal and Bedan and Jephthah and Samuel and delivered you* out of the hand of your* enemies on every side and you* dwelt in safety.
¹² And when you* saw that Nahash the king of the sons of Ammon came against you*, you* said to me, No, but a king will reign over us, when Jehovah your* God was your* king.

²⁰ And it happened, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was returned, that they sent and called him to the congregation and made him king over all Israel. There was none that followed the house of David, but only the tribe of Judah.

⁴ And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea, for he had sent messengers to So King of Egypt and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison.

¹⁶ Jehovah is King everlasting and forever. The nations have perished out of his land.

⁴ You are my King, O God. Command deliverance for Jacob.

⁶ Sing praise to God, sing praises. Sing praises to our King, sing praises.
⁷ Because God is the King of all the earth. Sing praises with understanding.

¹² Yet God is my King of long-ago, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

¹⁸ Because our shield belongs to Jehovah and our king to the Holy One of Israel.

² Let Israel rejoice in him who made him. Let the sons of Zion be joyful in their King.

²² For Jehovah is our judge. Jehovah is our lawgiver. Jehovah is our king, he will save us.

¹⁵ I am Jehovah, your* Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your* King.

²⁸ But where are your gods that you have made you? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble. For according to the number of your cities are your gods, O Judah.

¹⁹ Behold, the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people from a land that is very far off: Is not Jehovah in Zion? Is not her King in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images and with foreign vanities?

³ Surely now they will say, We have no king, for we do not fear Jehovah. And the king, what can he do for us?

⁹ And Jehovah will be King over all the earth. In that day Jehovah will be one and his name one.

⁴⁹ Nathanael answered and says to him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.

⁷ And Jehovah said to Samuel, Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.
⁸ According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me and served other gods, so do they also to you.
⁹ Now therefore listen to their voice. However you will protest solemnly to them and will show them the manner of the king who will reign over them.

¹⁹ but you* have this day rejected your* God who himself saves you* out of all your* calamities and your* distresses and you* have said to him, No, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before Jehovah by your* tribes and by your* thousands.

¹³ Now therefore behold the king whom you* have chosen and whom you* have asked for. And behold, Jehovah has set a king over you*.

²² And Samuel said, Has Jehovah as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Jehovah? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice and to listen than the fat of rams. ²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and stubbornness is as idolatry and household-idol. Because you have rejected the word of Jehovah, he has also rejected you from being king.

¹ And Jehovah said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for me a king among his sons.

¹ Now the Philistines fought against Israel. And the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell down slain in Mount Gilboa.
² And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons and the Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi shua, the sons of Saul. ³ And the battle went severely against Saul and the archers overtook him and he was greatly distressed because of the archers.
⁴ Then Saul said to his armor bearer, Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through and abuse me. But his armor bearer would not, for he was very afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword and fell upon it.
⁵ And when his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died and his three sons and his armor bearer and all his men, that same day together.
⁷ And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled. And the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

¹⁵ So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a thing brought about by Jehovah, that he might establish his word, which Jehovah spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
¹⁶ And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your* tents, O Israel. Now see to your own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents.

²⁶ And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now the kingdom will return to the house of David. ²⁷ If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of Jehovah at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah. And they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.
²⁸ Upon it the king took counsel and made two calves of gold. And he said to them, It is too much for you* to go up to Jerusalem. Behold your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt. ²⁹ And he set the one in Bethel and the other he put in Dan. ³⁰ And this thing became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one, even to Dan. ³¹ And he made houses of high places and made priests from among all the people who were not of the sons of Levi.
³² And Jeroboam made a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah and he went up to the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.

⁷ Go, tell Jeroboam, Jehovah says thus, the God of Israel: Forasmuch as I exalted you from among the people and made you prince over my people Israel, ⁸ and tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it you and yet you have not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments and who followed me with all his heart to do only what was right in my eyes, ⁹ but have done evil above all who were before you and have gone and made you other gods and molten images to provoke me to anger and have cast me behind your back, ¹⁰ therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam and will cut off from Jeroboam every one who urinates on the wall, he who is shut up and he who is left at large in Israel and will utterly sweep away the house of Jeroboam as a man sweeps away manure, till it is all gone.
¹¹ He who dies of Jeroboam in the city will the dogs eat and he who dies in the field will the birds of the heavens eat, for Jehovah has spoken it.
¹² Arise you therefore, get you to your house. When your feet enter into the city, the child will die. ¹³ And all Israel will mourn for him and bury him, for he only of Jeroboam will come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward Jehovah, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.
¹⁴ Moreover Jehovah will raise up a king for him over Israel who will cut off the house of Jeroboam that day. But what? Even now. ¹⁵ For Jehovah will kill* Israel as a reed is shaken in the water. And he will root up Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers and will scatter them beyond the River because they have made their Asherim, provoking Jehovah to anger. ¹⁶ And he will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he has sinned and with which he has made Israel to sin.

¹ In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea the son of Elah began to reign in Samaria over Israel, and reigned nine years. ² And he did what was evil in the sight of Jehovah, yet not as the kings of Israel who were before him. ³ Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against him. And Hoshea became his servant and brought him tribute.
⁴ And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea, for he had sent messengers to So King of Egypt and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison.

² For the transgression of a land many are the rulers of it. But by men of understanding and knowledge the state will be prolonged.

⁷ As for Samaria, its king is cut off, as foam upon the water.

³⁴ Is not this laid up in store with me, sealed up among my treasures?
³⁵ Vengeance is for me and recompense at the time when their foot will slip. For the day of their calamity is at hand and the things that are to come upon them will make haste.

¹⁹ You * say, God lays up his wickedness for his sons. Let him recompense it to himself that he may know it.

³ And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble and of rebuke and of blasphemy, for the sons have come to the birth and there is no strength to bring forth.

⁶ Trembling took hold of them there, pain, as of a woman in travail.

³ A prudent man sees the evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and suffer for it.

⁸ And they will be dismayed. Pangs and sorrows will take hold. They will be in pain as a woman in travail. They will look in amazement one at another, their faces, faces of flame.

³ Therefore my loins are filled with anguish. Pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in travail. I am pained so that I cannot hear. I am dismayed so that I cannot see.

¹⁷ As a woman with child, who draws near the time of her delivery, is in pain and cries out in her pangs, so we have been before you, O Jehovah.

³ And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble and of rebuke and of blasphemy, for the sons have come to the birth and there is not strength to bring forth.

⁹ Shall I bring to the birth and not cause to bring forth? says Jehovah. Shall I who cause to bring forth shut the womb? says your God.

³¹ For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, the anguish as of her who brings forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, who gasps for breath, who spreads her hands, saying, Woe is me now! For my soul faints before the murderers.

²¹ What will you say when he will set over you as head those whom you yourself have taught to be friends to you? Shall not sorrows take hold of you as of a woman in travail?

²³ O inhabitant of Lebanon, who makes your nest in the cedars, how greatly to be pitied you will be when pangs come upon you, the pain as of a woman in travail!

⁶ Ask you* now and see whether a man travails with child. Why do I see every man with his hands on his loins as a woman in travail and all faces are turned into paleness?

²⁴ Damascus has grown feeble. She turns herself to flee and trembling has seized on her. Anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her, as of a woman in travail.

⁹ Now why do you cry out aloud? Is there no king in you. Has your counselor perished, that pangs have taken hold of you as of a woman in travail? ¹⁰ Be in pain and labor to bring forth, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in travail.
For now you will go forth out of the city and will dwell in the field and will come even to Babylon. There you will be rescued. There Jehovah will redeem you from the hand of your enemies.

²⁹ Now when he asked for lights, he dashed in and came in trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, ³⁰ and having led them out, he said, Lords, what is essential for me to do in order that I might be saved?
³¹ Now they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, you and your house. ³² And they spoke the word of the Lord to him, to all who were in his house. ³³ And having taken them in that same hour of the night, he fully-washed their lashes, and he and all his household were instantly immersed^*. \ulnone\nosupersub ³⁴ And he led them up into his house and placed a table before them, and was glad with all his household, all having believed in God.

²⁵ But while reasoning concerning righteousness and self-control and the future judgment which will be, Felix having become fearful, answered, Travel on now, and when I take the next opportunity, I myself will call you.

² (for he says, ‘I heard you at an acceptable time and I helped you in a day of salvation;' behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation),

³ For whenever they are saying, Peace and security; then sudden utter-destruction stands by them, just-like the travail a woman has in her womb, and they may never flee away from it.

⁷ Hence, as the Holy Spirit says, ‘Today if you hear his voice, ⁸ do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, according to the day of the testing in the wilderness,

¹⁹ God is not a man, that he should lie, neither the son of man, that he should repent. Has he said and will he not do it? Or has he spoken and will he not make it good?

²⁹ And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent, for he is not a man that he should repent.

²⁵ But as for me I know that my Redeemer lives and at last he will stand up upon the earth. ²⁶ And after my skin, this body, is destroyed, then outside my flesh I will see God, ²⁷ whom I, even I, will see on my side and my eyes will behold and not as a stranger. My heart is consumed within me.

²⁴ then God is gracious to him and says, Deliver him from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom.

¹⁰ Because you will not leave my soul to Sheol, nor will you allow your holy man to see corruption.

³ O Jehovah, you have brought up my soul from Sheol. You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

¹⁵ But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, because he will receive me. Selah.

²⁰ You, who have shown us many and great troubles, will revive us again and will bring us up again from the depths of the earth.

¹³ Because great is your loving kindness toward me and you have delivered my soul from the lowest Sheol.

⁸ He will swallow up death in victory and the lord Jehovah will wipe away tears from all faces. And he will take away the reproach of his people from all the earth. For Jehovah has spoken it.

¹⁹ Your dead will live. My dead bodies will arise. Awake and sing, you* who dwell in the dust, for your dew is as the dew of herbs and the earth will cast forth the dead.

⁶ You have rejected me, says Jehovah. You have gone backward. Therefore I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you. I am weary with relenting.

¹¹ Then he said to me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, Our bones are dried up and our hope is lost. We are clean cut off.
¹² Therefore prophesy and say to them, The lord Jehovah says thus: Behold, I will open your* graves and cause you* to come up out of your* graves, O my people and I will bring you* into the land of Israel.
¹³ And you* will know that I am Jehovah when I have opened your* graves and caused you* to come up out of your* graves, O my people. ¹⁴ And I will put my Spirit in you* and you* will live. And I will place you* in your* own land. And you* will know that I, Jehovah, have spoken it and performed it, says Jehovah.

² After two days he will revive us. On the third day he will raise us up and we will live before him.

⁶ For I, Jehovah, do not change. Therefore you*, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

¹⁵ For if the casting away of them is the reconciliation of the world, what is the receiving of them, except life from the dead?

²⁹ For the gifts and the calling of God are unregrettable.

²¹ For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead also came through a man. ²² For just-as all die in Adam, so all will also be given-life in Christ.

⁵² in the briefest moment, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the last trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised up incorruptible and we will be changed. ⁵³ For it is essential this corruptible body to be clothed with incorruption and this mortal body to be clothed with immortality. ⁵⁴ But whenever this corruptible body has been clothed with incorruption and whenever this mortal has been clothed with immortality, then the word that has been written will become so, Death is swallowed up in victory. ⁵⁵ O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? ⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; ⁵⁷ but gratitude to God, who is giving us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁴ For indeed we who are in this tabernacle are groaning, being burdened; not in which we wish to be stripped, but we wish for ourselves to be clothed, in order that the mortal one may be swallowed up by life.

²¹ He will fashion the body of our humbleness, that it may become transformed to the body of his glory, according to the working of which he is able to even subject all things to himself.

¹⁴ For if we believe that Jesus died and rose up again, so those who have fallen-asleep through Jesus, God will also be bringing together with him.

¹⁷ Every good act of giving, and every complete gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change, nor a shadow of turning.

¹³ And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them and they were judged each one according to their works.

⁴ And he will be wiping-away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no death anymore. There will be no mourning, no crying, no pain anymore because the first things have passed away.

⁵² And the name of the second he called Ephraim, because God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.

¹⁹ And his father refused and said, I know, my son, I know. He also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother will be greater than he and his seed will become a multitude of nations.

²² Joseph is a fruitful son, a fruitful son by a fountain, his daughters run over the wall.

¹⁷ The first-offspring of his herd, majesty is his. And his horns are the horns of the wild-ox. With them he will push the peoples, all of them, even the ends of the earth. And they are the ten thousands of Ephraim and they are the thousands of Manasseh.

¹⁶ His roots will be dried up beneath and above his limbs be will cut off.

¹³ Let his posterity be cut off. Let their name be blotted out in the following generation.

²¹ Prepare you* slaughter for his sons for the iniquity of their fathers, that they not rise up and possess the earth and fill the face of the world with cities.

¹⁶ You will winnow them and the wind will carry them away and the whirlwind will scatter them. And you will rejoice in Jehovah. You will glory in the Holy One of Israel.

¹¹ At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow, nor to cleanse,

⁵ Moreover I will give all the riches of this city and all the gains of it and all the precious things of it, yes, all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies. And they will make them a prey and take them and carry them to Babylon.

³⁶ Therefore Jehovah says thus: Behold, I will plead your cause and take vengeance for you. And I will dry up her sea and make her fountain dry.

¹⁰ Yes, behold, being planted, will it flourish? Shall it not utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It will wither in the beds where it grew.

¹² But it was plucked up in fury. It was cast down to the ground and the east wind dried up its fruit. Its strong twigs were broken off and withered. The fire consumed them.

⁸ And also their gods, with their molten images and with their desirable vessels of silver and of gold, he will carry captive into Egypt and he will refrain from the king of the north some years.

¹⁹ The wind has wrapped her up in its wings and they will be put to shame because of their sacrifices.

¹¹ As for Ephraim, their glory will fly away like a bird. There will be no birth and none with child and no conception.

⁹ You* take the spoil of silver. Take the spoil of gold. For there is no end of the store, the glory of all desirable furniture.

¹² And Hazael said, Why do you weep my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that you will do to the sons of Israel: their strongholds you will set on fire and their young men you will kill with the sword and will dash in pieces their little ones and rip up their women with child.

¹⁶ Then Menahem killed* Tiphsah and all that were in it and the borders of it, from Tirzah, because they did not open to him, therefore he killed* it. And all the women in it who were with child he ripped up.

⁶ In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away to Assyria and placed them in Halak and on the Habor, the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes.

¹⁸ Therefore Jehovah was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. There was none left but only the tribe of Judah.

⁹ And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he comes out to fight against you, he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, ¹⁰ Thus will you* speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. ¹¹ Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. And will you be delivered?

⁸ O daughter of Babylon, who is to be destroyed, he will be fortunate who rewards you as you have served us. ⁹ He will be fortunate who takes and smashes your little ones against the rock.

⁸ For the head of Syria is Damascus and the head of Damascus is Rezin. And within sixty-five years Ephraim will be broken in pieces, so that is will not be a people. ⁹ And the head of Ephraim is Samaria and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's son. If you* will not believe, surely you* will not be established.

⁴ For before the child will have knowledge to cry, My father, and, My mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.

¹⁶ Their infants also will be dashed in pieces before their eyes. Their houses will be rifled and their wives ravished.

³ And the fortress will cease from Ephraim and the kingdom from Damascus. And the remnant of Syria, they will be as the glory of the sons of Israel, says Jehovah of hosts.

¹⁴ And they have not cried to me with their heart, but they howl upon their beds. They assemble themselves for grain and new wine. They rebel against me.

² Their heart is divided. Now they will be found guilty. He will kill* their altars. He will destroy their pillars.

¹⁴ Therefore a tumult will arise among your people and all your fortresses will be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel in the day of battle; the mother was dashed in pieces with her sons. ¹⁵ So will Bethel do to you* because of your* great wickedness. At daybreak the King of Israel will be utterly cut off.

¹³ Jehovah says thus: For three transgressions of the sons of Ammon, yes, for four, I will not turn away the punishment of it, because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they may enlarge their border.

⁹ Proclaim you* in the palaces at Ashdod and in the palaces in the land of Egypt and say, Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria and behold what great tumults are in it and what oppressions are in the midst of it.

¹ Woe to those who are at ease in Zion and to those who are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come! ² Pass to Calneh and see and from there go to Hamath the great, then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms? Or is their border greater than your* border?
³ You* who put far away the evil day and cause the seat of violence to come near, ⁴ who lie upon beds of ivory and stretch themselves upon their couches and eat the lambs out of the flock and the calves out of the midst of the stall, ⁵ who scatter-words to the mouth of the harp, who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David, ⁶ who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the chief oils, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
⁷ Therefore they will now go into exile with the first who go into exile and the banqueting of those who stretched themselves will pass away.
⁸ The lord Jehovah has sworn by himself, Jehovah, the God of hosts says: I abhor the excellency of Jacob and hate his palaces, therefore I will deliver up the city with all that is in it.

¹ I saw the Lord standing beside the altar. And he said, Strike the capitals, that the thresholds may shake and break them in pieces on the head of all of them and I will kill the last of them with the sword. There will not one of them flee away and there will not one of them escape.

⁴ And the mountains will be melted under him and the valleys will be split, as wax before the fire, as waters that are poured down a steep place.

¹⁶ For the statutes of Omri are kept and all the works of the house of Ahab and you* walk in their counsels, that I may make you a desolation and the inhabitants of it a hissing. And you* will bear the reproach of my people.

¹⁰ Yet she was carried away. She went into captivity. Her young sons also were dashed in pieces at the head of all the streets. And they cast lots for her honorable men and all her great men were bound in chains.
