¹ And the word of Jehovah came to me, saying, ² Son of man, what is the vine tree more than any tree, the vine branch which is among the trees of the forest? ³ Shall wood be taken of it to make any work? Or will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel on it?
⁴ Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel. The fire has devoured both the ends of it and the midst of it is burned. Is it profitable for any work? ⁵ Behold, when it was whole, it was fit for no work. How much less, when the fire has devoured it and it is burned, will it yet be fit for any work!
⁶ Therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ⁷ And I will set my face against them. They will go forth from the fire, but the fire will devour them.
And you* will know that I am Jehovah when I set my face against them. ⁸ And I will make the land desolate because they have committed a trespass, says the lord Jehovah.

³² For their vine is of the vine of Sodom and of the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter. ³³ Their wine is the poison of serpents and the cruel venom of adders.

⁸ You brought a vine out of Egypt. You drove out the nations and planted it. ⁹ You prepared a place before it and it took deep root and filled the land. ¹⁰ The mountains were covered with the shadow of it and the branches of it were like cedars of God. ¹¹ It sent out its limbs to the sea and its offshoots to the River.
¹² Why have you broken down its walls, so that all those who pass by the way pluck it? ¹³ The boar out of the wood ravages it and the wild beasts of the field feed on it.
¹⁴ Turn again, we beseech you, O God of hosts. Look down from heaven, and behold and visit this vine, ¹⁵ and the stock which your right hand planted and the branch that you made strong for yourself. ¹⁶ It is burned with fire, it is cut down. They perish at the rebuke of your countenance.

¹³ The fig tree ripens her green figs and the vines are in blossom. They give forth their fragrance.
Arise, my love, my fair one and come away.

¹⁵ Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vineyards. For our vineyards are in blossom.

¹¹ I went down into the garden of nuts, to see the green plants of the valley, to see whether the vine budded and the pomegranates were in flower.

¹² Let us get up early to the vineyards. Let us see whether the vine has budded, its blossom is open, the pomegranates are in flower. There I will give you my love.

¹¹ Solomon had a vineyard at Baal-hamon. He let out the vineyard to keepers. Every one for the fruit of it was to bring a thousand pieces of silver. ¹² My vineyard, which is mine, is before me. You, O Solomon, will have the thousand and those who keep the fruit of it, two hundred.

¹ Let me sing for my well-beloved a song of my beloved concerning his vineyard. My well-beloved had a vineyard in a very fruitful hill. ² And he dug it and gathered out the stones of it and planted it with the choicest vine and built a tower in the midst of it and also hewed out a winepress in it. And he looked that it should bring forth grapes and it brought out wild grapes.
³ And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge, I beseech you*, between me and my vineyard. ⁴ What could have been done more to my vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, it brought out wild grapes?
⁵ And now I will tell you* what I will do to my vineyard. I will take away the hedge of it and it will be eaten up. I will break down the wall of it and it will be trodden down. ⁶ And I will lay it waste. It will not be pruned nor hoed, but there will come up briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
⁷ For the vineyard of Jehovah of hosts is the house of Israel and the men of Judah his pleasant plant. And he looked for justice, but, behold, oppression, for righteousness, but, behold, a cry.

²³ Sing, O you* heavens, for Jehovah has done it. Shout, you* lower parts of the earth. Break forth into singing, you* mountains, O forest and every tree in it. For Jehovah has redeemed Jacob and will glorify himself in Israel.

²¹ Yet I had planted you a noble vine, entirely a right seed. How then have you turned into the degenerate branches of a foreign vine to me?

¹ Israel is a luxuriant vine that puts forth his fruit. According to the abundance of his fruit he has multiplied his altars. According to the goodness of their land they have made good pillars.

¹² Therefore for your* sake Zion will be plowed as a field and Jerusalem will become heaps and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

² Wail, O fir tree, for the cedar has fallen, because the fine ones are destroyed. Wail, O you* oaks of Bashan, for the strong forest has come down.

³³ Hear another parable: there was a certain man, a householder, who planted a vineyard and placed a fence around it, and shoveled a winepress in it, and built a tower and rented it out to farmers, and went-abroad. ³⁴ Now when the time of the fruits drew near, he sent his bondservants to the farmers, to receive his fruits. ³⁵ And then the farmers took his bondservants and whipped one, and killed one and stoned one. ³⁶ Again, he sent other bondservants, more-than the first, and they did to them likewise. ³⁷ But later he sent to them his son, saying, They will be revering my son. ³⁸ But the farmers, when they saw the son, said among themselves, This is the heir. Come-here. We should kill him, and we might hold-onto his inheritance. ³⁹ And having taken him, they cast him forth outside the vineyard, and killed him. ⁴⁰ Therefore, whenever the lord of the vineyard comes, what shall he do to those farmers?
⁴¹ They say to him, He will evilly destroy those evil men, and will be renting the vineyard to other farmers, who will be giving to him the fruits at their seasons.

¹ And he began to speak to them in parables: A man planted a vineyard and placed a fence around it and shoveled a winepress in it and built a tower, and rented it out to farmers and went-abroad. ² And at the harvest time, he sent a bondservant to the farmers, in order that he might receive from the fruit of the vineyard from the farmers. ³ But they took him and whipped him and sent him away empty handed. ⁴ And again, he sent another bondservant to them, and having stoned him, they bashed his head and sent him away, having dishonored him. ⁵ And again, he sent another, and they killed him and many others, whipping some but killing others. ⁶ Therefore, he still had one, his beloved son; he also sent him last to them, saying, They will be revering my son. ⁷ But those farmers said to themselves, This is the heir. Come-here. We should kill him and the inheritance will be ours. ⁸ And they took him and killed him and cast him forth outside the vineyard. ⁹ Therefore, what will the lord of the vineyard be doing? He will come and will destroy the farmers and will be giving the vineyard to others.

⁹ Now he began to speak to the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and rented it to farmers, and went-abroad for a considerable time. ¹⁰ And in the harvest season, he sent a bondservant to the farmers, in order that they might give to him from the fruit of the vineyard, but the farmers whipped him and sent him away empty handed. ¹¹ And he sent yet a different bondservant, and they also whipped and dishonored him, and sent him away empty. ¹² And he sent yet a third, and they also traumatized him and cast him forth. ¹³ But the lord of the vineyard said, What should I do? I will be sending my beloved son; perchance seeing him, they will be revering him. ¹⁴ But when the farmers saw him, they were reasoning with themselves, saying, This is the heir. Come-here. We should kill him, in order that the inheritance may become ours. ¹⁵ And they cast him forth outside the vineyard, and killed him. Therefore, what will the lord of the vineyard do to them? ¹⁶ He will come and destroy these farmers, and will be giving the vineyard to others.
But having heard this, they said, Let it not happen!

¹ I am the true vine and my Father is the farmer. ² Every branch which is not bringing forth fruit in me, he takes it away and every branch which is bringing forth fruit, he prunes it, in order that it may bring forth more fruit. ³ Already you are clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. ⁴ Abide in me and I in you. Just-as the branch is not able to bring forth fruit from itself, if it does not abide in the vine; so neither can you if you do not abide in me. ⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me and I in him, this one is bringing forth much fruit, because you are not able to do anything separate from me. ⁶ If anyone is not abiding in me, he was cast outside like a branch and was dried up, and they gather them and cast them into the fire and it is burned.

⁸ And as the bad figs, which cannot be eaten they are so bad, surely Jehovah says thus: So will I give up Zedekiah the king of Judah and his rulers and the residue of Jerusalem, who remain in this land and those who dwell in the land of Egypt.

¹³ You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt is flavorless, then with what shall it be salted? It is still not strong-enough to be used for anything, except to be cast outside and trampled by men.

⁵⁰ The salt is good, but if the salt has become non-salty, in what shall you season it? Have salt in yourselves and be at peace one with another.

³⁴ The salt is good, but if the salt is flavorless, in what shall it be seasoned? ³⁵ It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure-pile. Cast it outside. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

¹⁶ It is burned with fire, it is cut down. They perish at the rebuke of your countenance.

³¹ And the strong man will be as flax and his work as a spark. And they will both burn together and none will quench them.

¹¹ When the limbs of it are withered, they will be broken off. The women will come and set them on fire, for it is a people of no understanding. Therefore he who made them will not have compassion upon them and he who formed them will show them no favor.

¹⁴ And fire has gone out of the twigs of its branches. It has devoured its fruit, so that there is no strong twig in it to be a scepter to rule. This is a lamentation and will be for a lamentation.

¹¹ I have overthrown cities among you*, as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and you* were as a brand plucked out of the burning.
Yet you* have not returned to me, says Jehovah.

¹ For, behold, the day comes, it burns as a furnace and all the proud and all who work wickedness, will be stubble. And the day that comes will burn them up, says Jehovah of hosts, that it will leave them neither root nor branch.

¹² whose winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will be thoroughly cleansing his threshing floor, and he will be gathering his grain into the barn, but the chaff he will be burning up with unquenchable fire.

⁶ If anyone is not abiding in me, he was cast outside like a branch and was dried up, and they gather them and cast them into the fire and it is burned.

⁸ But when it is bringing forth thorns and thistles, it is unapproved and near to a curse; whose end is for burning.

²⁹ for our God is also a consuming fire.

¹⁶ And it will happen, when you* are multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, says Jehovah, they will no more say, The ark of the covenant of Jehovah, nor will it come to mind. Neither will they remember it, nor will they miss it. Neither will it be made any more.

¹ Let me sing for my well-beloved a song of my beloved concerning his vineyard. ²⁴ Therefore as the tongue of fire devours the stubble and as the dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root will be as rottenness and their blossom will go up as dust, because they have rejected the law of Jehovah of hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
²⁵ Therefore the anger of Jehovah is kindled against his people and he has stretched forth his hand against them and has struck them. And the mountains tremble and their dead bodies are as refuse in the midst of the streets.
For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

⁷ A lion has gone up from his thicket and a destroyer of nations. He is on his way, he has gone forth from his place, to make your land desolate, that your cities be laid waste, without inhabitant.

²⁰ Therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out upon this place, upon man and upon beast and upon the trees of the field and upon the fruit of the ground. And it will burn and will not be quenched.

⁷ And afterward, says Jehovah, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people, even such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life and he will kill* them with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them, nor have pity, nor have mercy.

⁸ And as the bad figs, which cannot be eaten they are so bad, surely Jehovah says thus: So will I give up Zedekiah the king of Judah and his rulers and the residue of Jerusalem, who remain in this land and those who dwell in the land of Egypt.
⁹ I will even give them up to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth for evil, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places where I will drive them. ¹⁰ And I will send the sword, the famine and the pestilence, among them, till they are consumed from the land that I gave to them and to their fathers.

⁹ behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, says Jehovah and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant and will bring them against this land and against the inhabitants of it and against all these nations all around. And I will utterly destroy them and make them an astonishment and a hissing and everlasting desolations.
¹⁰ Moreover I will take from them the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. ¹¹ And this whole land will be a desolation and an astonishment. And these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

¹⁸ Jerusalem and the cities of Judah and the kings of it and the rulers of it, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, a hissing and a curse, as it is this day,

²¹ The incense that you* burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you* and your* fathers, your* kings and your* rulers and the people of the land, did Jehovah not remember them and did it not come into his mind? ²² So that Jehovah could no longer bear, because of the evil of your* practices and because of the abominations which you* have committed. Therefore your* land has become a desolation and an astonishment and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day. ²³ Because you* have burned incense and because you* have sinned against Jehovah and have not obeyed the voice of Jehovah, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies, therefore this evil has happened to you*, as it is this day.
²⁴ Moreover Jeremiah said to all the people and to all the women, Hear the word of Jehovah, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt: ²⁵ Jehovah of hosts says thus, the God of Israel, saying, You* and your* wives have both spoken with your* mouths and with your* hands have fulfilled it, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her. Establish then your* vows and perform your* vows.
²⁶ Therefore hear the word of Jehovah, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: Behold, I have sworn by my great name, says Jehovah, that my name will no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, As the lord Jehovah lives.
²⁷ Behold, I watch over them for evil and not for good. And all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there is an end of them.

² Son of man, what is the vine tree more than any tree, the vine branch which is among the trees of the forest?

³ and say, The lord Jehovah says thus: A great eagle with great wings and long pinions, full of feathers, which had various colors, came to Lebanon and took the top of the cedar. ⁴ He cropped off the topmost of the young twigs of it and carried it to a land of merchandise. He set it in a city of merchants.
⁵ He took also of the seed of the land and planted it in a fruitful soil. He placed it beside many waters. He set it as a willow tree. ⁶ And it grew and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him and the roots of it were under him. So it became a vine and brought out branches and shot forth sprigs.
⁷ There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers. And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him and shot forth its branches toward him, from the beds of its plantation, that he might water it. ⁸ It was planted in a good soil by many waters that it might bring forth branches and that it might bear fruit that it might be a splendid vine.
⁹ You say, The lord Jehovah says thus: Shall it flourish? Shall he not pull up the roots of it and cut off the fruit of it, that it may wither? It will wither in all its fresh springing leaves, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots of it. ¹⁰ Yes, behold, being planted, will it flourish? Shall it not utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It will wither in the beds where it grew.

⁴⁷ And say to the forest of the South, Hear the word of Jehovah. The lord Jehovah says thus: Behold, I will kindle a fire in you and it will devour every green tree in you and every dry tree. The flaming flame will not be quenched and all faces from the south to the north will be burnt by it. ⁴⁸ And all flesh will see that I, Jehovah, have kindled it. It will not be quenched.

⁶ But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not overtake your* fathers? And they turned and said, Like as Jehovah of hosts thought to do to us, according to our ways and according to our practices, so he has dealt with us.

¹⁰ And whatever man there is of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that journey among them, who eats any manner of blood, I will set my face against that soul who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people.

³ I also will set my face against that man and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given of his seed to Molech, to defile my sanctuary and to profane my holy name. ⁴ And if the people at the land do at all hide their eyes from that man, when he gives of his seed to Molech and do not put him to death, ⁵ then I will set my face against that man and against his family and will cut him off and all who play the prostitute after him, to play the prostitute with Molech, from among their people.
⁶ And the soul that turns to those who have familiar spirits and to the wizards, to play the prostitute after them, I will even set my face against that soul and will cut him off from among his people.

¹⁷ And I will set my face against you* and you* will be struck before your* enemies. Those who hate you* will rule over you* and you* will flee when no man pursues you*.

¹⁷ And it will happen, that he who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill. And he who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill.

¹⁶ Jehovah has made himself known. He has executed justice. The wicked man is snared in the work of his own hands. A meditation. Selah.

¹⁶ (The face of Jehovah is against those who do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.)

¹⁸ And it will happen, that he who flees from the noise of the fear will fall into the pit and he who comes up out of the midst of the pit will be taken in the snare. For the windows on high are opened and the foundations of the earth tremble.

¹⁰ For I have set my face upon this city for evil and not for good, says Jehovah. It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon and he will burn it with fire.

⁴³ Fear and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of Moab, says Jehovah. ⁴⁴ He who flees from the fear will fall into the pit and he who gets up out of the pit will be taken in the snare. For I will bring upon him, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, says Jehovah.

⁷ And the slain will fall in the midst of you*.
And you* will know that I am Jehovah.

⁴ And my eye will not spare you, nor will I have pity. But I will bring your ways upon you and your abominations will be in the midst of you.
And you* will know that I am Jehovah.

¹⁰ You* will fall by the sword. I will judge you* in the border of Israel.
And you* will know that I am Jehovah.

⁸ And I will set my face against that man and will make him an astonishment, for a sign and a proverb. And I will cut him off from the midst of my people.
And you* will know that I am Jehovah.

³⁸ And I will purge out from among you* the rebels and those who transgress against me. I will bring them forth out of the land where they journey, but they will not enter into the land of Israel.
And you* will know that I am Jehovah.

⁴² And you* will know that I am Jehovah when I will bring you* into the land of Israel, into the country which I swore to give to your* fathers.

⁴⁴ And you* will know that I am Jehovah when I have dealt with you* for my name's sake, not according to your* evil ways, nor according to your* corrupt practices, O you* house of Israel, says the lord Jehovah.

¹⁹ As if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall and a serpent bit him.

¹ I saw the Lord standing beside the altar. And he said, Strike the capitals, that the thresholds may shake and break them in pieces on the head of all of them and I will kill the last of them with the sword. There will not one of them flee away and there will not one of them escape.
² Though they dig into Sheol, from there my hand will take them and though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down. ³ And though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out from there. And though they are hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, from there I will command the serpent and it will bite them. ⁴ And though they go into captivity before their enemies, from there I will command the sword and it will kill them. And I will set my eyes upon them for evil and not for good.

¹⁴ Moreover all the chiefs of the priests and the people, trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations. And they polluted the house of Jehovah which he had made holy in Jerusalem.
¹⁵ And Jehovah, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling-place. ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of Jehovah arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

¹¹ Then I said, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until cities be waste without inhabitant and houses without man and the land become utterly waste,

³ The earth will be utterly emptied and utterly laid waste, for Jehovah has spoken this word. ⁴ The earth mourns and fades away. The world languishes and fades away. The lofty people of the earth languish.
⁵ The earth also is polluted under the inhabitants of it, because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.
⁶ Therefore the curse has devoured the earth and those who dwell in it are found guilty. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned and few men left. ⁷ The new wine mourns. The vine languishes. All the merry-hearted do sigh. ⁸ The joy of tambourine ceases. The noise of those who rejoice ends. The joy of the harp ceases. ⁹ They will not drink wine with a song. Strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it. ¹⁰ The waste city is broken down. Every house is shut up, that no man may come in. ¹¹ There is a crying in the streets because of the wine. All joy is darkened. The gladness of the land has gone. ¹² Desolation is left in the city and the gate is struck with destruction.

¹⁴ And I will stretch out my hand upon them and make the land desolate and waste, from the wilderness toward Diblah, throughout all their habitations.
And they will know that I am Jehovah.

¹³ Son of man, when a land sins against me by committing a trespass and I stretch out my hand upon it and break the staff of the bread of it and send famine upon it and cut off from it man and beast, ¹⁴ though these three men, Noah, Daniel and Job, were in it, they would deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, says the lord Jehovah.
¹⁵ If I cause evil beasts to pass through the land and they ravage it and it is made desolate, so that no man may pass through because of the beasts, ¹⁶ though these three men were in it, as I live, says the lord Jehovah, they would deliver neither sons nor daughters, they only would be delivered, but the land would be desolate.
¹⁷ Or if I bring a sword upon that land and say, Sword, go through the land, so that I cut off from it man and beast, ¹⁸ though these three men were in it, as I live, says the lord Jehovah, they would deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only would be delivered themselves.
¹⁹ Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out my wrath upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast, ²⁰ though Noah, Daniel and Job, were in it, as I live, says the lord Jehovah, they would deliver neither son nor daughter, they would but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.
²¹ For thus says the lord Jehovah: How much more when I send my four severe judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword and the famine and the evil beasts and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast!

²⁰ And I will spread my net upon him and he will be taken in my snare. And I will bring him to Babylon and will enter into judgment with him there for his trespass that he has trespassed against me.

²⁹ Then they will know that I am Jehovah when I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment, because of all their abominations which they have committed.

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of Jehovah's wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy. For he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.
