¹ The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. ² Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities, all is vanity. ³ What profit has man from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?
⁴ One generation goes and another generation comes, but the earth abides everlasting. ⁵ The sun also arises and the sun goes down and hastens to its place where it arises. ⁶ The wind goes toward the south and turns around to the north. It turns around continually in its course and the wind returns again to its circuits. ⁷ All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place from where the rivers come, they go there again.
⁸ All things are full of weariness, man cannot utter it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
⁹ What has been is what will be and what has been done is what will be done. And there is no new thing under the sun. ¹⁰ Is there a thing of which it may be said, See, this is new? It has been a thing of old, in the ages which were before us.
¹¹ There is no remembrance of the former things, nor will there be any remembrance of the latter that are to come, among those who will come after.
¹² I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. ¹³ And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven. It is a great task that God has given to the sons of men to be exercised by it.
¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.
¹⁵ What is crooked cannot be made straight and what is wanting cannot be numbered.
¹⁶ I spoke with my own heart, saying, Behold, I have become great and have increased wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge. ¹⁷ And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.
¹⁸ Because in much wisdom is much grief and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

⁴² And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. ⁴³ And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam his son reigned instead of him.

³⁰ And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years.

¹⁷ But as for the sons of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. ¹⁸ Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to forced-labor. And the sons of Israel stoned him to death with stones. And king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. ¹⁹ So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.

⁷ And you have also appointed prophets to preach of you at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah. And now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore and let us take counsel together.

⁹ I have proclaimed good news of righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I will not refrain my lips. O Jehovah, you know.

¹² I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

²⁷ Behold, I have found this, says the Preacher, laying one thing to another, to find out the account,

⁸ Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, all is vanity.
⁹ And further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge. Yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs. ¹⁰ The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words and what was written uprightly–words of truth.

¹ The Spirit of the lord Jehovah is upon me, because Jehovah has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind and the opening of bonds to those who are bound,

² Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city and preach to it the preaching that I bid you.

⁵ and he did not spare the ancient world, but guarded Noah, the eighth person spared, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood upon the world of ungodly people;

⁵ Behold, you have made my days as the width of hands and my life-time is as nothing before you. Surely every man at his best condition is altogether vanity. Selah.
⁶ Surely every man walks in a shadow. Surely they are in an uproar in vain. He heaps up and does not know who will gather them.

⁹ Surely men of low degree are vanity and men of high degree are a lie. They will go up in the balances. They are together lighter than vanity.
¹⁰ Do not trust in oppression and do not become vain in robbery. Because if riches increase, do not set your* heart on it.

⁴ Man is like vanity. His days are as a shadow that passes away.

¹¹ Then I looked on all the works that my hands had worked and on the labor that I had labored to do, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind and there was no profit under the sun.

¹⁵ Then I said in my heart, As it happens to the fool, so it will happen even to me and why then was I more wise? Then I said in my heart that this also is vanity.

¹⁷ So I hated life, because the work that is worked under the sun was grievous to me. Because all is vanity and a striving after wind.

¹⁹ And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have rule over all my labor in which I have labored and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

²¹ Because there is a man whose labor is with wisdom and with knowledge and with skillfulness, yet he will leave it to a man who has not labored in it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.

²³ Because all his tasks are but sorrows and his travail is grief, yes, even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.

²⁶ Because to the man who pleases him God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he gives tasks to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

¹⁹ Because what befalls the sons of men befalls beasts, even one thing befalls them; as the one dies, so dies the other. Yes, they all have one breath and man has no preeminence above the beasts; because all is vanity.

⁴ Then I saw all labor and every skillful work, that a man is envied for this by his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

⁸ There is one man who is alone and he has not a second, yes, he has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end of all his labor, nor are his eyes satisfied with riches. And he says, whom then do I labor and deprive my soul of good? This also is vanity, yes, it is a great task.

¹⁶ There was no end of all the people, even of all those whom he was over. Yet those who come after will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

¹⁰ He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver, nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.

¹¹ Because there are many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

⁸ Yes, if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all. But let him remember the days of darkness, because they will be many. All that comes is vanity.

¹⁰ Therefore remove sorrow from your heart and put away evil from your flesh, because youth and the dawn of life are vanity.

⁸ Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, all is vanity.

²⁰ For the creation was subjected to futility, not voluntarily, but because of the one who subjected it, in hope

⁴ Do not weary yourself to be rich. Cease out of your own wisdom. ⁵ Will you set your eyes upon what is not? Because it certainly makes itself wings, like an eagle that flies toward heaven.

²² Because what has a man of all his labor and of the striving of his heart in which he labors under the sun?

⁹ What profit has he who works in that in which he labors?

³ Yes, better than them both is he who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

⁷ Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun.

¹⁶ And this also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so he will go. And what profit has he that he labored for the wind?

¹⁸ Behold, what I have seen to be good and to be fitting is for a man to eat and to drink and to enjoy good in all his labor in which he labors under the sun all the days of his life which God has given him, because this is his portion.

¹² Because who knows what is good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow? For who can tell a man what will be after him under the sun?

¹¹ Wisdom is as good as an inheritance, yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun.

¹⁵ Then I commended joy, because a man has no better thing under the sun, than to eat and to drink and to be cheerful. For that will abide with him in his labor all the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.
¹⁶ When I applied my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done upon the earth (because also there is he who sees sleep with his eyes neither day nor night), ¹⁷ then I beheld all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. Because however much a man labors to seek it out, yet he will not find it. Yes moreover, though a wise man thinks to know it, yet he will not be able to find it.

³ This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event to all.
Yes also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil and madness is in their heart while they live and after that they go to the dead.

⁶ As well their love, as their hatred and their envy, has perished long ago, nor have they anymore a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun.

¹³ I have also seen wisdom under the sun this way and it seemed great to me.

² Why do you* spend money for what is not bread and your* labor for what does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me and eat you* what is good and let your* soul delight itself in fatness.

¹³ Behold, is it not of Jehovah of hosts that the peoples labor for the fire and the nations weary themselves for vanity?

¹⁸ What profits the graven image, that the maker of it has engraved it, the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he who fashions its form trusts in it, to make dumb idols?

²⁶ For what is a man profited, if he gains the whole world, and should forfeit his soul? Or what shall a man give as an exchange for his soul?

³⁶ For what will it profit a man, if he has gained the whole world and should forfeit his soul? ³⁷ Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

²⁷ Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will be giving to you; for God, the Father, has sealed this one.

³ And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years and fathered a son in his own likeness, according to his image and called his name Seth. ⁴ And the days of Adam were eight hundred years after he fathered Seth. And he fathered more sons and daughters. ⁵ And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years and he died.
⁶ And Seth lived a hundred and five years and fathered Enosh. ⁷ And Seth lived eight hundred and seven years after he fathered Enosh and fathered more sons and daughters. ⁸ And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years and he died.

²⁸ And Lamech lived a hundred and eighty-two years and fathered a son. ²⁹ And he called his name Noah, saying, This one will comfort us in our work and in the toil of our hands, because of the ground which Jehovah has cursed. ³⁰ And Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years after he fathered Noah and fathered more sons and daughters. ³¹ And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years and he died.

²⁰ And Reu lived thirty-two years and fathered Serug. ²¹ And Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he fathered Serug and fathered more sons and daughters.
²² And Serug lived thirty years and fathered Nahor. ²³ And Serug lived two hundred years after he fathered Nahor and fathered more sons and daughters.
²⁴ And Nahor lived twenty-nine years and fathered Terah. ²⁵ And Nahor lived a hundred and nineteen years after he fathered Terah and fathered more sons and daughters.
²⁶ And Terah lived seventy years and fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran.
²⁷ Now these are the genealogies of Terah were : Terah fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran fathered Lot. ²⁸ And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
²⁹ And Abram and Nahor took wives to themselves. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah. ³⁰ And Sarai was barren; she had no child.
³¹ And Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his son's son and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife. And they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan. And they came to Haran and dwelt there. ³² And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years and Terah died in Haran.

⁹ And these are the genealogies of Esau (the father of the Edomites) in Mount Seir. ¹⁰ These are the names of Esau's sons: Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau. ¹¹ And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho and Gatam and Kenaz. ¹² And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son and she bore to Eliphaz: Amalek. These are the sons of Adah, Esau's wife. ¹³ And these are the sons of Reuel: Nahath and Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah, these were the sons of Basemath, Esau's wife. ¹⁴ And these were the sons of Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon, Esau's wife: and she bore to Esau Jeush and Jalam and Korah. ¹⁵ These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau: The sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau were : chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz, ¹⁶ chief Korah, chief Gatam, chief Amalek. These are the chiefs that came by Eliphaz in the land of Edom. These are the sons of Adah. ¹⁷ And these are the sons of Reuel, Esau's son: chief Nahath, chief Zerah, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah. These are the chiefs that came by Reuel in the land of Edom. These are the sons of Basemath, Esau's wife. ¹⁸ And these are the sons of Oholibamah, Esau's wife: chief Jeush, chief Jalam, chief Korah. These are the chiefs that came by Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau's wife. ¹⁹ These are the sons of Esau and these are their chiefs. The same is Edom.

⁹ And Jacob said to Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.

⁶ And Joseph died and all his brothers and all that generation. ⁷ And the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly and multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty and the land was filled with them.

¹⁶ And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their genealogy: Gershon and Kohath and Merari. And the years of the life of Levi were a hundred thirty-seven years.
¹⁷ The sons of Gershon were : Libni and Shimei, according to their families. ¹⁸ And the sons of Kohath were : Amram and Izhar and Hebron and Uzziel. And the years of the life of Kohath were a hundred thirty-three years. ¹⁹ And the sons of Merari were : Mahli and Mushi. These are the Levite families according to their genealogy.
²⁰ And Amram took him Jochebed his father's sister as a wife and she bore him Aaron and Moses. And the years of the life of Amram were a hundred and thirty-seven years. ²¹ And the sons of Izhar were : Korah and Nepheg and Zichri. ²² And the sons of Uzziel were : Mishael and Elzaphan and Sithri.
²³ And Aaron took him Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab, the sister of Nahshon, as a wife and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. ²⁴ And the sons of Korah were : Assir and Elkanah and Abiasaph. These are the Korahite families.
²⁵ And Eleazar Aaron's son took to him one of the daughters of Putiel as a wife and she bore to him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers of the Levites according to their families.
²⁶ These are that Aaron and Moses, to whom Jehovah said, Bring out the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies. ²⁷ These are those who spoke to Pharaoh King of Egypt, to bring out the sons of Israel from Egypt. These are that Moses and Aaron.

⁴⁷ O remember how short my time is, for what vanity you have created all the sons of men!
⁴⁸ What man is he who will live and not see death, who will deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah.

⁹ Because all our days are passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh.
¹⁰ The days of our years are threescore years and ten, or even by reason of strength eighty years, yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, because it is soon gone and we fly away.

²⁴ I said, O my God, do not take me away in the midst of my days. Your years are throughout all generations.
²⁵ You laid of old the foundation of the earth and the heavens are the work of your hands. ²⁶ They will perish, but you will endure. Yes, all of them will grow old like a garment. As a raiment you will change them and they will be changed, ²⁷ but you are the same and your years will have no end.
²⁸ The sons of your servants will continue and their seed will be established before you.

⁵ who laid the foundations of the earth that it should not be shaken everlasting and forever.

⁹⁰ Your faithfulness is to all generations. You have established the earth and it abides. ⁹¹ They abide this day according to your ordinances, because all things are your servants.

⁵ Your* fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live everlasting?

³⁵ The heaven and the earth will be passing away, but my words may never pass away.

¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will be coming like a thief in the night; in which the heavens will be passing away with a crashing-sound, and the elements will be dissolved, being burnt with heat, and the earth and the works which are in it will be burned up. ¹¹ Therefore, with all these things being dissolved, see what sort of things you ought to possess in all holy conduct and godliness, ¹² expecting, and diligently wanting the presence of the day of God, through which, the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt, being burnt with heat. ¹³ But according to his promise, we are expecting new heavens and a new earth, in which dwells righteousness.

²² While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest and cold and heat and summer and winter and day and night will not cease.

¹³ And the sun stood still and the moon stayed, until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Is this not written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stayed in the midst of heaven and hastened not to go down about a whole day. ¹⁴ And there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah listened to the voice of a man, for Jehovah fought for Israel.

⁴ Their line has gone out through all the earth and their words to the end of the world. He has set a tabernacle for the sun in them, ⁵ which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber and rejoices as a strong man to run his course.
⁶ His going forth is from the end of the heavens and his circuit to the ends of it and there is nothing hid from the heat of it.

¹ As the male-deer pants after the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, O God.

³⁶ His seed will endure everlasting and his throne as the sun before me. ³⁷ It will be established everlasting as the moon and as the faithful witness in the sky. Selah.

¹⁹ He appointed the moon for seasons. The sun knows his going down. ²⁰ You make darkness and it is night, during which all the beasts of the forest creep forth.
²¹ The young lions roar after their prey and seek their food from God. ²² The sun arises; they get away and lie down in their dens.
²³ Man goes forth to his work and to his labor until the evening.

²⁰ Jehovah says thus: If you* can break my covenant of the day and my covenant of the night, so that there will not be day and night in their season,

¹¹ The sun and moon stood still in their habitation, at the light of your arrows as they went, at the shining of your glittering spear.

⁹ Out of the chamber of the south comes the storm and cold out of the north.

¹⁷ How your garments are warm when the earth is still because of the south wind?

²⁵ For he commands and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up the waves of it.

²⁹ He makes the storm a calm, so that the waves of it are still.

⁵ As you do not know what is the way of the wind, nor how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, even so you do not know the work of God who does it all.

⁴ But Jehovah sent out a great wind upon the sea and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken.

²⁴ Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and practices them, he will be similar to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock;

²⁷ and the rain came down and the rivers came up and the winds blew and hit that house and it fell and great was its fall.

⁸ The Spirit is blowing where he wills and you hear his voice, but do not know from where he is coming and where he is going, so is everyone who has been born from the Spirit.

¹³ Now when wind from the south blew softly, having thought to have taken-hold of the ir purpose, they lifted the anchor up and were coasting-along, closer to Crete. ¹⁴ But not long after, a typhoon wind, being called Euroclydon, was cast against her; ¹⁵ and when the ship was seized and it was not able to face the wind, having given her to the wind, we were being carried along.

¹⁰ and marked out for it my bound and set bars and doors, ¹¹ and said, This far you will come, but no farther and here your proud waves will be stayed?

⁶ You covered it with the deep as with a raiment. The waters stood above the mountains. ⁷ At your rebuke they fled. At the voice of your thunder they hastened away.
⁸ The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place which you had founded for them. ⁹ You have set a bound that they may not pass over, that they do not turn again to cover the earth.

⁵ My soul will be satisfied as with marrow and fatness. And my mouth will praise you with joyful lips

²⁰ Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied and the eyes of man are never satisfied.

¹⁵ The leach has two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yes, four that do not say, Enough: ¹⁶ Sheol and the barren womb, the earth that is not satisfied with water and the fire that does not say, Enough.

¹ Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of such as were oppressed and they had no comforter. And on the side of their oppressors there was power, but they had no comforter.
² Therefore I praised the dead who have long been dead more than the living who are yet alive. ³ Yes, better than them both is he who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
⁴ Then I saw all labor and every skillful work, that a man is envied for this by his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

¹⁰ He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver, nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity. ¹¹ When goods increase, they are increased who eat them. And what advantage is there to the owner of it, except the beholding of them with his eyes?

²⁴ What is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out?
²⁵ I turned about and my heart was set to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the reason of things and to know that wickedness is folly and that foolishness is madness.
²⁶ And I find more bitter than death, the woman whose heart is snares and nets and whose hands are chains. He who pleases God will escape from her, but the sinner will be taken by her.

⁶ Those who hunger and are thirsty for righteousness are fortunate, because they will be fed.

²⁸ Come-here to me, all you who labor and have been loaded down, and I will be giving-rest to you.

²² For we know that all creation groans and travails together in pain till now. ²³ But not only they, but we ourselves also who have the first-fruit of the Spirit, even we ourselves are groaning in ourselves, waiting for our sonship, that is, the redemption of our body.

¹⁶ They will not be hungry anymore, nor thirsty anymore; nor should the heat of the sun fall upon them, nor any heat, ¹⁷ because the Lamb, who is in the midst of the throne, is shepherding them and is guiding them to the springs of waters of life and God will be wiping-away every tear from their eyes.

¹² And I turned myself to behold wisdom and madness and folly. Because what can the man do who comes after the king? Even what has been done long ago.

¹⁵ What is, has been long ago and what is to be, has long ago been. And God seeks again what has passed away.

¹⁰ Whatever has been, the name of it was given long ago and it is known that he is man. Neither can he contend with him who is mightier than he.

¹⁰ Do not say, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? Because you do not inquire wisely concerning this.

¹⁹ Behold, I will do a new thing. Now it will spring forth. Shall you* not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

²² How long will you go here and there, O you backsliding daughter? For Jehovah has created a new thing in the earth: a woman will encompass a man.

¹ But false prophets happened to be also among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will be smuggling in sects of destruction, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing quick destruction upon themselves.

¹ And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and there is no sea anymore.

⁵ And he who sits upon the throne said, Behold, I am making all things new. And he says to me, Write, because these are the faithful and true words.

¹² Rejoice and be glad, because your reward is much in the heavens; for thus, they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

³⁰ and say, If we were in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in the blood of the prophets. ³¹ So-then you are testifying to yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. ³² And you, fill up the measure of your fathers.

²⁶ And just-as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will also be in the days of the Son of Man. ²⁷ They were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being betrothed, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. ²⁸ Likewise, even as it happened in the days of Lot; they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building; ²⁹ but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. ³⁰ According to these things, it will be in the day that the Son of Man is revealed.

⁵¹ You are stiff-necked and non-circumcised in heart and ears. You are habitually defying the Holy Spirit, like your fathers, like you also!

¹⁴ For brethren, you became imitators of the congregations of God, which are in Judea in Christ Jesus, because you also suffered the same things by your own countrymen, just-as they did also by the Jews. ¹⁵ The Jews, who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and banished us, and were not pleasing to God, and are adverse to all men; ¹⁶ forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles in order that they might be saved; that they should always fill up their sins, but the wrath has arrived-unexpectedly upon them–to the end.

⁸ Now in the manner that Jannes and Jambres stood against Moses so also, are these standing against the truth. Men having been utterly corrupted in their mind, unapproved concerning the faith.

⁶ The enemy have come to an end. They are desolate forever and the cities which you have overthrown. The very memory of them has perished,

¹⁶ Because of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no everlasting remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. And how the wise man dies even as the fool!

⁵ Because the living know that they will die, but the dead do not know anything, nor have they anymore a reward, because the memory of them is forgotten.

²² Let them bring forth and declare to us what will happen. Declare the former things, what they are, that we may consider them and know the latter end of them, or show us things to come.
²³ Declare the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you* are gods. Yes, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed and behold it together. ²⁴ Behold, you* are of nothing and your* work is of nothing. An abomination is he who chooses you*.
²⁵ I have raised up him from the north and he has come, he who calls upon my name from the rising of the sun. And he will come upon rulers as upon mortar and as the potter treads clay.
²⁶ Who has declared it from the beginning, that we may know and formerly, that we may say, He is right? Yes, there is none who declares. Yes, there is none who shows. Yes, there is none who hears your* words.

⁹ Behold, the former things have happen and I declare new things. Before they spring forth I tell you* of them.

¹ And king Solomon was king over all Israel.
² And these were the rulers whom he had: Azariah the son of Zadok, the priest; ³ Elihoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha, scribes; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, the recorder; ⁴ and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the army; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests; ⁵ and Azariah the son of Nathan was over the officers; and Zabud the son of Nathan was chief minister, and the king's friend; ⁶ and Ahishar was over the household; and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the men subject to forced-labor.
⁷ And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel who provided provisions for the king and his household. Each man had to make provision for a month in the year. ⁸ And these are their names: Ben-hur, in the hill-country of Ephraim; ⁹ Ben-deker, in Makaz and in Shaalbim and Beth-shemesh and Elon-beth-hanan; ¹⁰ Ben-hesed, in Arubboth (to him pertained Socoh and all the land of Hepher); ¹¹ Ben-abinadab, in all the height of Dor (he had Taphath the daughter of Solomon as a wife); ¹² Baana the son of Ahilud, in Taanach and Megiddo and all Beth-shean which is beside Zarethan, beneath Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-meholah, as far as beyond Jokmeam; ¹³ Ben-geber, in Ramoth-gilead (to him pertained the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead; even to him pertained the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and brazen bars); ¹⁴ Ahinadab the son of Iddo, in Mahanaim; ¹⁵ Ahimaaz, in Naphtali (he also took Basemath the daughter of Solomon as a wife); ¹⁶ Baana the son of Hushai, in Asher and Bealoth; ¹⁷ Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar; ¹⁸ Shimei the son of Ela, in Benjamin; ¹⁹ Geber the son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan and he was the only officer who was in the land.

¹ The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

¹⁹ You will eat bread by the sweat of your face, till you return to the ground, because out of it you were taken. For you are dust and you will return to dust.

² The works of Jehovah are great, sought out by all those who have pleasure in it.

² so as to incline your ear to wisdom and apply your heart to understanding, ³ because, if you cry after discernment and lift up your voice for understanding, ⁴ if you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures,

⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing. Get wisdom, yes, get understanding with all your substance.

¹ He who desires to separate himself seeks excuses and rages against all sound-wisdom.

¹⁵ The heart of a prudent man gets knowledge and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

²⁶ My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways.

¹⁷ And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.

¹⁰ I have seen the tasks which God has given to the sons of men to be humbled by it.

²⁵ I turned about and my heart was set to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the reason of things and to know that wickedness is folly and that foolishness is madness.

⁹ All this I have seen and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun. There is a time in which one man has power over another to his hurt.

¹² And furthermore, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

¹⁵ Meditate on these things; be diligent in them; in order that your progress may be apparent to all.

³⁰ And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. ³¹ For he was wiser than all men: than Ethan the Ezrahite and Heman and Calcol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame was in all the nations all around.
³² And he spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs were a thousand and five.

¹⁷ And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.
¹⁸ Because in much wisdom is much grief and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

⁹ Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

⁶ and that he would show you the secrets of wisdom! For he is great in understanding. Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.

²⁹ When he gives quietness, who then can condemn? And when he hides his face, who then can behold him? It is the same whether to a nation, or to a man,

¹⁴ I know that, whatever God does, it will be forever. Nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it. And God has done it that men should fear before him.

¹² Because wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense. But the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.
¹³ Consider the work of God. Because who can make that straight, which he has made crooked?

⁴ Every valley will be exalted and every mountain and hill will be made low. And the crooked will become straight and the rough places smooth.

³⁷ Who is he that says and it happens, when the Lord does not command it?

³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing and he does according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. And none can stay his hand, or say to him, What are you doing?

²⁷ Now which one out of you is able to add one cubit upon his stature by being anxious?

¹² behold, I have done according to your word. Behold, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart, so that there has been none like you before you, neither after you will any arise like you.
¹³ And I have also given you what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you all your days.

³⁰ And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt.

⁷ However I did not believe the words until I came and my eyes had seen it. And behold, the half was not told me; your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame which I heard.

²³ So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom. ²⁴ And all the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.

²⁰ But Gehazi the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master has spared this Naaman the Syrian, in not receiving at his hands what he brought. As Jehovah lives, I will run after him and take something from him.

¹⁰ Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people. For who can judge this your people, that is so great?
¹¹ And God said to Solomon, Because this was in your heart and you have not asked riches, wealth, or honor, nor the life of those who hate you, neither yet have asked long life, but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge my people over whom I have made you king, ¹² wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. And I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who have been before you, neither will any after you have the like.

¹² Huram said moreover, Praise Jehovah, the God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who has given to David the king a wise son, endued with discretion and understanding, that should build a house for Jehovah and a house for his kingdom.

²² So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. ²³ And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.

⁴ Stand in awe and do not sin. Speak with your* own heart upon your* bed and be still. Selah.

⁶ I call to remembrance my song in the night. I meditate with my own heart and my spirit makes diligent search.

⁹ I got for me male-singers and female-singers and the luxuries of the sons of men and a wife and wives.
So I was great and increased more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me.

⁷ However he does not so reason, nor does his heart so think, but it is in his heart to destroy and to cut off nations not a few. ⁸ For he says, Are not my rulers all of them kings? ⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images excelled those of Jerusalem and of Samaria, ¹¹ shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?
¹² Therefore it will happen, that, when the Lord has performed his whole work upon Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the glory of his high looks.
¹³ For he has said, I have done it by the strength of my hand and by my wisdom, for I have understanding. And I have removed the bounds of the peoples and have robbed their treasures. And like a valiant man I have brought down those who sit on thrones. ¹⁴ And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the peoples. And like a gathering of eggs that are forsaken, I have gathered all the earth. And there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

¹⁴ who says, I will build me a wide house and spacious chambers and cuts out windows for himself and it is overlaid with cedar and painted with vermilion.

¹⁰ The lord Jehovah says thus: It will happen in that day, that things will come into your mind and you will devise an evil plan.
¹¹ And you will say, I will go up to the land of un-walled villages. I will go to those who are at rest, who dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls and having neither bars nor gates,

³⁰ The king spoke and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?

¹⁴ But solid nourishment is for the mature ones, from those who, through their habit, have had their senses exercised to the discerning of both good and evil.

¹³ And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven. It is a great task that God has given to the sons of men to be exercised by it.
¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

³ I searched in my heart how to prolong my flesh with wine (my heart yet guiding me with wisdom) and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what it was good for the sons of men that they should do under heaven all the days of their life.

¹⁰ And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any joy. Because my heart rejoiced because of all my labor and this was my portion from all my labor.
¹¹ Then I looked on all the works that my hands had worked and on the labor that I had labored to do, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind and there was no profit under the sun.
¹² And I turned myself to behold wisdom and madness and folly. Because what can the man do who comes after the king? Even what has been done long ago.

²³ All this I have proved in wisdom. I said, I will be wise, but it was far from me. ²⁴ What is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out?
²⁵ I turned about and my heart was set to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the reason of things and to know that wickedness is folly and that foolishness is madness.

²¹ Test all things. Hold-onto the good things.

²⁸ And to man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom and to depart from evil is understanding.

¹⁶ Do not be over-righteous, nor show yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?

¹² And furthermore, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
¹³ This is the end of the matter, all has been heard: Fear God and keep his commandments, because this is the whole of man.

¹⁸ Let no one deceive himself. If anyone seems to be wise in this age among you, let him become foolish, in order that he may become wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it has been written, ‘ It is he who grabs the wise in their craftiness'; ²⁰ and again, ‘The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are futile.’

¹³ Who is wise and knowledgeable among you? Let him show out of his good conduct his works in meekness of wisdom. ¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not boast and lie against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not a wisdom coming down from above, but is earthly, physical, demonic. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is unrest and every evil matter. ¹⁷ But the wisdom which is from above is indeed first pure, thereafter is peaceful, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and non-pretended.
