¹ And the men of Kiriath-jearim came and fetched up the ark of Jehovah and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill and made Eleazar his son holy to keep the ark of Jehovah. ² And it happened, from the day that the ark abode in Kiriath-jearim, that the time was long, for it was twenty years and all the house of Israel lamented after Jehovah.
³ And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, If you* do return to Jehovah with all your* heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you* and direct your* hearts to Jehovah and serve him only. And he will deliver you* out of the hand of the Philistines. ⁴ Then the sons of Israel did put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth and served Jehovah only.
⁵ And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpah and I will pray for you* to Jehovah. ⁶ And they gathered together to Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before Jehovah and fasted on that day and said there, We have sinned against Jehovah. And Samuel judged the sons of Israel in Mizpah.
⁷ And when the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel were gathered together to Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the sons of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. ⁸ And the sons of Israel said to Samuel, Do not cease to cry to Jehovah our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
⁹ And Samuel took a sucking lamb and offered it for a whole burnt offering to Jehovah. And Samuel cried to Jehovah for Israel and Jehovah answered him.
¹⁰ And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel, but Jehovah thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines and confused them and they were struck down before Israel. ¹¹ And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines and killed* them until they came under Beth-car.
¹² Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Jehovah has helped us to now. ¹³ So the Philistines were subdued and they came no more within the border of Israel and the hand of Jehovah was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. ¹⁴ And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath. And Israel delivered the border of it out of the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
¹⁵ And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. ¹⁶ And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel and Gilgal and Mizpah. And he judged Israel in all those places. ¹⁷ And his return was to Ramah, for his house was there. And there he judged Israel and there he built an altar to Jehovah.

¹⁴ And the border extended and turned around on the west quarter southward, from the mountain that lies before Beth-horon southward. And the goings out of it were at Kiriath-baal (what is Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the west quarter.

²¹ And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought back the ark of Jehovah. Come down and fetch it up to you*.

² And David arose and went with all the people who were with him, from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, even the name of Jehovah of hosts who sits above the cherubim.
³ And they set the ark of God upon a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart. ⁴ And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill, with the ark of God and Ahio went before the ark.

⁵ So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor the brook of Egypt even to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. ⁶ And David went up and all Israel, to Baalah, that is to Kiriath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, Jehovah who sits above the cherubim that is called by the Name. ⁷ And they carried the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab. And Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.

⁶ Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah. We found it in the field of the wood.

¹¹ Depart, depart, go out from there. Touch no unclean thing. Go out of the midst of her. Cleanse yourselves, you* who bear the vessels of Jehovah.

⁴ And it happened, when the messenger of Jehovah spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice and wept.

¹³ Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against Jehovah your God and have scattered your ways to the strangers under every green tree and you* have not obeyed my voice, says Jehovah.

²² Return, you* backsliding sons, I will heal your* backslidings. Behold, we have come to you, for you are Jehovah our God. ²³ Truly it is in vain from the heights, the multitude on the mountains. Truly in Jehovah our God is the salvation of Israel.
²⁴ But the shameful thing has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. ²⁵ Let us lie down in our shame and let our confusion cover us, for we have sinned against Jehovah our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day and we have not obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God.

⁹ They will come with weeping. And I will lead them with supplications. I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they will not stumble. For I am a father to Israel and Ephraim is my firstborn.

¹⁰ And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication. And they will look to me whom they have pierced. And they will mourn for him, as a man mourns for his only son and will be in bitterness for him, as a man who is in bitterness for his firstborn.
¹¹ In that day there will be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddo.

⁴ Those who are mourning are fortunate, because they will be comforted.

¹⁰ For the sorrow which is according to the will of God is working unregrettable repentance for salvation, but the sorrow of the world is working death. ¹¹ For behold how much diligence this same thing, (your being sorrowful according to the will of God), has worked in you : but what a defense, but what indignation, but what fear, but what longing, but what zeal, but what vengeance! In everything you commended yourselves to be pure in the matter.

² Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, Put away the foreign gods that are among you* and purify yourselves and change your* garments.

¹³ You will fear Jehovah your God and him you will serve and will swear by his name.

²⁰ You will fear Jehovah your God. Him you will serve and to him you will cling and by his name you will swear.

⁴ You* will walk after Jehovah your* God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice and you* will serve him and cling to him.

² and will return to Jehovah your God and will obey his voice according to all that I command you this day, you and your sons, with all your heart and with all your soul, ³ that then Jehovah your God will turn your captivity and have compassion upon you and will return and gather you from all the peoples where Jehovah your God has scattered you.
⁴ If any of your outcasts be in the outermost parts of heaven, from there Jehovah your God will gather you and from there he will fetch you. ⁵ And Jehovah your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed and you will possess it and he will do you good and multiply you above your fathers. ⁶ And Jehovah your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your seed, to love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.
⁷ And Jehovah your God will put all these curses upon your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. ⁸ And you will return and obey the voice of Jehovah and do all his commandments which I command you this day.
⁹ And Jehovah your God will make you plenteous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body and in the fruit of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground, for good. For Jehovah will again rejoice over you for good, as he rejoiced over your fathers, ¹⁰ if you will obey the voice of Jehovah your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law; if you turn to Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

¹⁴ Now therefore fear Jehovah and serve him in sincerity and in truth. And put away the gods which your* fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt and serve you* Jehovah.

²³ Now therefore, he said, put away the foreign gods which are among you* and incline your* heart to Jehovah, the God of Israel.

¹³ And they forsook Jehovah and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

⁶ And the sons of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of Jehovah and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth and the gods of Syria and the gods of Sidon and the gods of Moab and the gods of the sons of Ammon and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook Jehovah and did not serve him.

¹⁶ And they put away the foreign gods from among them and served Jehovah. And his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

¹⁰ And they put his armor in the house of the Ashtaroth and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.

⁴⁸ if they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who carried them captive and pray to you toward their land, which you gave to their fathers, the city which you have chosen and the house which I have built for your name,

¹⁹ Now set your* heart and your* soul to seek after Jehovah your* God. Arise therefore and build you* the sanctuary of Jehovah God, to bring the ark of the covenant of Jehovah and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of Jehovah.

⁹ And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind, for Jehovah searches all hearts and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

³ Nevertheless there are good things found in you, in that you have put away the Asheroth out of the land and have set your heart to seek God.

¹⁹ who sets his heart to seek God, Jehovah, the God of his fathers, though he is not according to the purification of the sanctuary.

¹³ If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him, ¹⁴ if wickedness is in your hand, put it far away and do not let unrighteousness dwell in your tents.

¹ The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from Jehovah.

⁷ Let the wicked man forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts. And let him return to Jehovah and he will have mercy upon him and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

³ For Jehovah says thus to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, Break up your* tillable ground and sow not among thorns. ⁴ Circumcise yourselves to Jehovah and take away the foreskins of your* heart, you* men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my wrath go forth like fire and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your* practices.

³¹ Cast away from you* all your* transgressions, by which you* have transgressed and make you* a new heart and a new spirit. For why will you* die, O house of Israel?

¹ Come and let us return to Jehovah, for he has torn and he will heal us. He has struck and he will bind us up. ² After two days he will revive us. On the third day he will raise us up and we will live before him.

¹ O Israel, return to Jehovah your God, for you have fallen by your iniquity.

¹² Yet even now, says Jehovah, turn to me with all your* heart and with fasting and with weeping and with mourning. ¹³ And tear your* heart and not your* garments and turn to Jehovah your* God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness and relents of the evil.

¹⁰ Then Jesus says to him, Go behind me, Adversary! For it has been written, ‘You will worship the Lord your God and you will give-divine service to him only.’

²⁴ No one is able to serve two lords, for either he will hate the one and will love the other; or he will hold to one and will despise the other. You are not able to serve God and ^{F} money.

⁸ ‘These people are drawing near to me with their mouth, and are honoring me with their lips, but their heart is faraway from me.

⁸ And Jesus answered and said to him, Go behind me, Adversary! It has been written, ‘You will be worshiping the Lord your God and you will be giving-divine service to him only.’

²⁴ God is a Spirit, and it is essential for those who are worshiping him to worship in spirit and truth.

¹¹ And the sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of Jehovah and served the Baals.

¹⁵ And the sons of Israel said to Jehovah, We have sinned. Do to us whatever seems good to you, please only deliver us this day. ¹⁶ And they put away the foreign gods from among them and served Jehovah. And his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

³³ because that they have forsaken me and have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab and Milcom the god of the sons of Ammon. And they have not walked in my ways, to do what is right in my eyes and to keep my statutes and my ordinances as David his father did.

³ Assyria will not save us. We will not ride upon horses, nor will we say any more to the work of our hands, Our gods. For in you the fatherless finds mercy.

⁸ Ephraim will say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have answered and will regard him. I am like a green fir tree. From me, your fruit is found.

³⁸ and Dilean and Mizpeh and Joktheel,

¹ Then all the sons of Israel went out. And the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, with the land of Gilead, to Jehovah at Mizpah.

¹² Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Jehovah has helped us to now.

¹⁶ And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel and Gilgal and Mizpah. And he judged Israel in all those places.

¹⁷ And Samuel called the people together to Jehovah to Mizpah.

²³ Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against Jehovah in ceasing to pray for you*. But I will instruct you* in the good and the right way.

²³ Now when all the captains of the forces, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and Johanan the son of Kareah and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite and Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

¹ Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month the sons of Israel were assembled with fasting and with sackcloth and earth upon them.

¹⁶ Gather the people. Sanctify the assembly. Assemble the old men. Gather the sons and those who suck the breasts. Let the bridegroom go forth from his chamber and the bride out of her closet.

⁴⁰ And they will confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, in their trespass which they trespassed against me and also that, because they walked contrary to me,

¹⁰ And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him and he judged Israel. And he went out to war and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.

¹⁰ And the sons of Israel cried to Jehovah, saying, We have sinned against you, even because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.

¹⁵ And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Jehovah.

¹⁴ For we must die and are as water split on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; God does not take away life, but devises means that he who is banished is not an outcast from him.

⁴⁷ yet if they will rethink themselves in the land where they are carried captive and turn again and make supplication to you in the land of those who carried them captive, saying, We have sinned and have done perversely, we have dealt wickedly,

³ And Jehoshaphat was afraid and set himself to seek for Jehovah. And he proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

²¹ Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek of him a straight way for us and for our little ones and for all our substance. ²² For I was ashamed to ask of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way, because we had spoken to the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all those who seek him, for good, but his power and his wrath are against all those who forsake him. ²³ So we fasted and besought our God for this and he was entreated by us.

⁵ And at the evening oblation I arose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe torn and I fell upon my knees and spread out my hands to Jehovah my God, ⁶ and I said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God, for our iniquities are increased over our head and our guiltiness has grown up to the heavens. ⁷ Since the days of our fathers we have been exceedingly guilty to this day. And for our iniquities have we, our kings and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity and to plunder and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
⁸ And now for a little moment favor has been shown from Jehovah our God, to leave us a remnant to escape and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes and give us a little reviving in our bondage. ⁹ For we are bondmen, yet our God has not forsaken us in our bondage, but has extended loving kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God and to repair the ruins of it and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem. ¹⁰ And now, O our God, what will we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,

¹ Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month the sons of Israel were assembled with fasting and with sackcloth and earth upon them. ² And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers. ³ And they stood up in their place and read in the book of the law of Jehovah their God a fourth part of the day and another fourth part they confessed and worshiped Jehovah their God.

²⁷ Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them. And in the time of their trouble, when they cried to you, you heard from heaven and according to your great mercies you gave them saviors who saved them out of the hand of their adversaries.

²⁰ My friends scoff at me. My eye pours out tears to God

²⁷ He sings before men and says, I have sinned and perverted what was right and it did not profit me.

⁴ Behold, I am of small account. What shall I answer you? I lay my hand upon my mouth.

⁶ Therefore I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.

⁶ I am weary with my groaning. Every night I make my bed to swim. I water my couch with my tears.

³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation, nor is there any health in my bones because of my sin.
⁴ Because my iniquities have gone over my head. As a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds are loathsome and corrupt, because of my foolishness.
⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ Because my loins are filled with burning and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am faint and severely bruised. I have groaned because of the roaring of my heart.

³ My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, Where is your God?

⁸ Trust in him at all times, you* the people. Pour out your* heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.

⁶ We have sinned with our fathers. We have committed iniquity. We have done wickedly.

¹³⁶ Streams of water run down my eyes, because they do not observe your law.

¹³ Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against Jehovah your God and have scattered your ways to the strangers under every green tree and you* have not obeyed my voice, says Jehovah.
¹⁴ Return, O backsliding sons, says Jehovah, for I am a husband to you*. And I will take you*, one of a city and two of a family and I will bring you* to Zion.

¹ Oh that my head were waters and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned back. I repented and after I was instructed, I killed* upon my thigh. I was ashamed, yes, even confounded, because I bore the reproach of my youth.

¹¹ My eyes fail with tears, my heart is troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the young sons and the nursing-babes faint in the streets of the city.

¹⁸ Their heart cried to the Lord. O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night. Give yourself no respite. Do not let the apple of your eye cease. ¹⁹ Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches. Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lift up your hands toward him for the life of your young sons, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.

⁴⁹ My eye pours down and does not cease, without any intermission,

⁴ Will you judge them, son of man, will you judge them? Cause them to know the abominations of their fathers,

³ And I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.
⁴ And I prayed to Jehovah my God and made confession and said, Oh, Lord, the great and fearful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments, ⁵ we have sinned and have dealt perversely and have done wickedly and have rebelled, even turning aside from your precepts and from your ordinances,

¹² Yet even now, says Jehovah, turn to me with all your* heart and with fasting and with weeping and with mourning.

¹ And the word of Jehovah came to Jonah the second time, saying, ² Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city and preach to it the preaching that I bid you.
³ So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of Jehovah. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, of three days' journey. ⁴ And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey. And he cried out and said, Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.
⁵ And the people of Nineveh believed God and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
⁶ And the news reached the king of Nineveh and he arose from his throne and laid his robe from him and covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. ⁷ And he made proclamation and proclaimed through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Do not let them feed, nor drink water, ⁸ but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and beast and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn each one from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.
⁹ Who knows whether God will not turn and relent and turn away from his fierce anger, that we not perish?
¹⁰ And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. And God relented of the evil which he said he would do to them and he did not do it.

¹⁸ After having risen up, I will be traveling to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned at heaven, and in your sight.

¹⁰ And when Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them and they were very afraid. And the sons of Israel cried out to Jehovah.

⁶ When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves and in thickets and in rocks and in coverts and in pits.

¹¹ And when Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

¹⁹ And all the people said to Samuel, Pray for your servants to Jehovah your God that we not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask a king for us.
²⁰ And Samuel said to the people, Do not fear. You* have indeed done all this evil, yet do not turn aside from following Jehovah, but serve Jehovah with all your* heart. ²¹ And do not turn not aside after vain things which cannot profit nor deliver, for they are vain.
²² For Jehovah will not forsake his people for his great name's sake, because it has pleased Jehovah to make you* a people to himself. ²³ Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against Jehovah in ceasing to pray for you*. But I will instruct you* in the good and the right way.
²⁴ Only fear Jehovah and serve him in truth with all your* heart, for consider what great things he has done for you*.

⁴ It may be Jehovah your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God and will rebuke the words which Jehovah your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.

¹ For Zion's sake I will not hold my peace and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness and her salvation as a lamp that burns.

⁶ I have set watchmen upon your walls, O Jerusalem. They will never keep silent day nor night. You* who are Jehovah's reminders, take no rest, ⁷ and give him no rest, till he establishes and till he makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.

¹⁶ Therefore confess your trespasses to one another, and pray on behalf of one another, that you may be healed. The supplication of a righteous man prevails; much in its working.

²⁶ And build an altar to Jehovah your God upon the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner and take the second bullock and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you will cut down.

²⁸ And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down and the Asherah was cut down that was by it and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

¹⁴ And the cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite and stood there where there was a great stone. And they split the wood of the cart and offered up the cows for a burnt offering to Jehovah. ¹⁵ And the Levites took down the ark of Jehovah and the coffer that was with it, in which the jewels of gold were and put them on the great stone. And the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day to Jehovah.

¹⁷ And his return was to Ramah, for his house was there. And there he judged Israel and there he built an altar to Jehovah.

¹² And they answered them and said, He is. Behold, he is before you. Make haste now, for he has come today into the city, for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place.

⁸ And you will go down before me to Gilgal. And behold, I will come down to you, to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings. You will abide seven days till I come to you and show you what you will do.

² And Samuel said, How do I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with you and say, I have come to sacrifice to Jehovah.

³⁰ And Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down.
³¹ And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob to whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel will be your name. ³² And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah. And he made a trench around the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. ³³ And he put the wood in order and cut the bullock in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood. ³⁴ And he said, Do it the second time and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time and they did it the third time. ³⁵ And the water ran all around the altar and he also filled the trench with water.
³⁶ And it happened at the time of the offering of the evening oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and that I have done all these things at your word. ³⁷ Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that you, Jehovah, are God and that you have turned their heart back again.
³⁸ Then the fire of Jehovah fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust and licked up the water that was in the trench.

¹⁵ And call upon me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you and you will glorify me.

⁶ Moses and Aaron among his priests and Samuel among those who call upon his name, they called upon Jehovah and he answered them.

¹ Then Jehovah said to me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind would not be toward this people. Cast them out of my sight and let them go forth.

²³ And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven and Jehovah sent thunder and hail and fire ran down to the earth and Jehovah rained hail upon the land of Egypt. ²⁴ So there was hail and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, such as had not been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.
²⁵ And throughout all the land of Egypt the hail killed* all that was in the field, both man and beast and the hail killed* every herb of the field and broke every tree of the field.

³ and will say to them, Hear, O Israel, you* draw near this day to battle against your* enemies. Do not let your* heart faint. Do not fear, nor tremble, neither be you* frightened at them. ⁴ For Jehovah your* God is he who goes with you*, to fight for you* against your* enemies, to save you*.

¹⁰ And Jehovah confused them before Israel and he killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and killed* them to Azekah and to Makkedah.

¹⁵ And Jehovah confused Sisera and all his chariots and all his army, with the edge of the sword before Barak. And Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on his feet.

⁸ They chose new gods, then war was in the gates. Was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?

²⁰ From heaven the stars fought; from their courses they fought against Sisera.

¹⁰ Those who contend with Jehovah will be broken to pieces. He will thunder against them in heaven. Jehovah will judge the ends of the earth and he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.

¹⁷ Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call to Jehovah that he may send thunder and rain and you* will know and see that your* wickedness is great, which you* have done in the sight of Jehovah in asking a king for you*.

¹⁴ Jehovah thundered from heaven and the Most High uttered his voice. ¹⁵ And he sent out arrows and scattered them, lightning and confused them.

¹¹ He made darkness his hiding-place, his pavilion all around him, darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
¹² At the brightness before him his thick clouds passed, hailstones and coals of fire. ¹³ Jehovah also thundered in the heavens and the Most High uttered his voice, hailstones and coals of fire. ¹⁴ And he sent out his arrows and scattered them, Yes, lightnings shot out and confused them.

¹⁶ The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you. They were afraid. The depths also trembled. ¹⁷ The clouds poured out water. The skies sent out a sound. Your arrows also went abroad.
¹⁸ The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind. The lightnings lightened the world. The earth trembled and shook.

³ A fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries all around. ⁴ His lightnings lightened the world. The earth saw and trembled.

⁶ Then he answered and spoke to me, saying, This is the word of Jehovah to Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says Jehovah of hosts.

¹⁸ And there became lightnings and thunders and voices, and there became a great earthquake, such-as has not happened from which time men were born upon the earth, so-great an earthquake–so great! ¹⁹ And the great city became divided into three parts and the cities of the nations fell and Babylon the great was remembered in God’s sight, to give to her the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath. ²⁰ And every island fled away and the mountains were not found. ²¹ And great hail, approximately a talant’s poundage,
comes down from heaven upon men and men blasphemed God from the wound of the hail, because its wound is extremely great.

¹⁴ And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh. As it is said to this day, It will be provided in the mountain of Jehovah.

¹⁸ And Jacob rose up early in the morning and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil upon the top of it. ¹⁹ And he called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at first.

⁴⁵ And Jacob took a stone and lifted it up for a pillar. ⁴⁶ And Jacob said to his brothers, Gather stones and they took stones and made a heap. And they ate there by the heap. ⁴⁷ And Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha.
⁴⁸ And Laban said, This heap is witness between me and you this day. Therefore the name of it was called Galeed, ⁴⁹ and Mizpah. For he said, May Jehovah watch between me and you, when we are absent one from another, ⁵⁰ if you will afflict my daughters and if you will take wives besides my daughters, no man is with us, see, God is witness between me and you.
⁵¹ And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap and behold the pillar, which I have set between me and you. ⁵² This heap is witness and the pillar is witness, that I will not pass over this heap to you and that you will not pass over this heap and this pillar for harm to me.

¹⁴ And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he spoke with him, a pillar of stone. And he poured out a drink offering on it and poured oil on it.

¹⁵ And Moses built an altar and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi.

⁹ And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood and they are there to this day.

²⁰ And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal. ²¹ And he spoke to the sons of Israel, saying, When your* sons will ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What do these stones mean?
²² Then you* will let your* sons know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. ²³ For Jehovah your* God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you*, until you* were passed over, as Jehovah your* God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were passed over, ²⁴ that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of Jehovah, that it is mighty, that you* may fear Jehovah your* God forever.

²⁶ And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God. And he took a great stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Jehovah.
²⁷ And Joshua said to all the people, Behold, this stone will be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of Jehovah which he spoke to us. It will be therefore a witness against you*, lest you* deny your* God.

¹ And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle and encamped beside Ebenezer and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

¹ Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God and they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

⁶ I have been held up by you from the womb. You are he who took me out of my mother's guts. My praise will be continually of you.

¹⁷ O God, you have taught me from my youth and I have declared your wondrous works until now.

¹⁹ In that day will there be an altar to Jehovah in the midst of the land of Egypt and a pillar to Jehovah at the border of it.

³ Listen to me, O house of Jacob and all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from their birth, who have been carried from the womb. ⁴ And even to old age I am he and even to hoar hairs I will carry you *. I have made and I will bear, yes, I will carry and will deliver.

²² Therefore, having obtained the assistance which is from God, I am standing to this day, testifying both to the little and to the great, saying nothing outside of what both the prophets and Moses said was about to happen.

¹⁰ who rescued us out of so-great a death and is rescuing us; in whom we have hoped that he will also still be rescuing us.

¹ And the sons of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of Jehovah and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

⁵ for behold, you will conceive and bear a son. And no razor will come upon his head, for the child will be a Nazirite to God from the womb. And he will begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

¹ Saul was … years old when he began to reign. And when he had reigned two years over Israel, ² Saul chose for him three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
³ And Jonathan killed* the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear. ⁴ And all Israel heard say that Saul had struck the garrison of the Philistines and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal. ⁵ And the Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel: thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth-aven.

⁶ And Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, Come and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Jehovah will work for us, for there is no limitation to Jehovah to save by many or by few. ⁷ And his armor bearer said to him, Do all that is in your heart. Turn and behold, I am with you according to your heart.
⁸ Then Jonathan said, Behold, we will pass over to the men and we will disclose ourselves to them. ⁹ If they say thus to us, Abide until we come to you*, then we will stand still in our place and will not go up to them. ¹⁰ But if they say thus, Come up to us, then we will go up, for Jehovah has delivered them into our hand and this will be the sign to us.
¹¹ And both of them disclosed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves. ¹² And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer and said, Come up to us and we will show you* a thing. And Jonathan said to his armor bearer, Come up after me, for Jehovah has delivered them into the hand of Israel.
¹³ And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet and his armor bearer after him. And they fell before Jonathan and his armor bearer killed them after him.
¹⁴ And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armor bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow's length in an acre of land. ¹⁵ And there was a trembling in the camp, in the field and among all the people. The garrison and the spoilers, they also trembled. And the earth quaked, so there was an exceedingly great trembling. ¹⁶ And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude melted away and they went here and there.

²⁰ And Saul and all the people who were with him were gathered together and came to the battle. And behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great confusion.
²¹ Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines as formerly and who went up with them into the camp, from the country all around, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. ²² Likewise all the men of Israel who had hid themselves in the hill-country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed close after them in the battle. ²³ So Jehovah saved Israel that day and the battle passed over by Beth-aven.

⁴⁹ And David put his hand in his bag and took from there a stone and slung it and killed* the Philistine in his forehead. And the stone sank into his forehead and he fell upon his face to the earth.
⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone and killed* the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David.
⁵¹ Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of the sheath of it and killed him and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
⁵² And the men of Israel and of Judah arose and shouted and pursued the Philistines until you come to Gai and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath and to Ekron. ⁵³ And the sons of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines and they plundered their camp.

³ Now Samuel was dead and all Israel had lamented him and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those who had familiar spirits and the wizards, out of the land.
⁴ And the Philistines gathered themselves together and came and encamped in Shunem. And Saul gathered all Israel together and they encamped in Gilboa. ⁵ And when Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid and his heart trembled greatly.

¹ Now the Philistines fought against Israel. And the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell down slain in Mount Gilboa.
² And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons and the Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi shua, the sons of Saul. ³ And the battle went severely against Saul and the archers overtook him and he was greatly distressed because of the archers.
⁴ Then Saul said to his armor bearer, Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through and abuse me. But his armor bearer would not, for he was very afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword and fell upon it.
⁵ And when his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died and his three sons and his armor bearer and all his men, that same day together.
⁷ And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled. And the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

² and when Jehovah your God will deliver them up before you and you will kill* them, then you will utterly destroy them. You will make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them.

¹⁶ And you will consume all the peoples that Jehovah your God will deliver to you. Your eye will not pity them. Neither will you serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.

¹⁷ However Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

³⁴ They did not destroy the peoples, as Jehovah commanded them,

¹⁶ And Jehovah raised up judges who saved them out of the hand of those who despoiled them.

¹⁰ And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him and he judged Israel. And he went out to war and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.
¹¹ And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

⁶ And they gathered together to Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before Jehovah and fasted on that day and said there, We have sinned against Jehovah. And Samuel judged the sons of Israel in Mizpah.

¹ And Samuel said to all Israel, Behold, I have listened to your* voice in all that you* said to me and have made a king over you*.

¹¹ And Jehovah sent Jerubbaal and Bedan and Jephthah and Samuel and delivered you* out of the hand of your* enemies on every side and you* dwelt in safety.

¹ And Samuel died. And all Israel gathered themselves together and lamented him and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

²⁰ After these things for approximately four hundred and fifty years, he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. ²¹ And from thereon, they asked for a king. And God gave to them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

¹⁰ Tell, you* who ride on white donkeys, you* who sit on rich carpets and you* who walk by the way.

⁴ And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkey colts and they had thirty cities, which are called Havvoth-jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead.

¹⁴ And he had forty sons and thirty sons' sons who rode on seventy donkey colts and he judged Israel eight years.

² When I will find the set time, I will judge in uprightness;

³ Judge the poor man and the orphan. Do justice to the afflicted and destitute man. ⁴ Rescue the poor and needy man. Deliver him from the hand of the wicked man.

⁷ And Jehovah appeared to Abram and said, I will give this land to your seed. And there he built an altar to Jehovah, who appeared to him. ⁸ And he moved from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to Jehovah and called upon the name of Jehovah.

²⁰ And he erected an altar there and called it El-Elohe-Israel.

⁷ And he built there an altar and called the place El-bethel, because God was revealed to him there, when he fled from the face of his brother.

⁴ And it happened on the morrow, that the people rose early and built there an altar and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
⁵ And the sons of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that did not come up in the assembly to Jehovah? For they had made a great oath concerning him who did not come up to Jehovah to Mizpah, saying, He will surely be put to death.

¹ Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill-country of Ephraim. And his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

¹⁹ And they rose up in the morning early and worshiped before Jehovah and returned and came to their house to Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife and Jehovah remembered her.

⁴ Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together and came to Samuel to Ramah.

¹⁵ And all the people went to Gilgal. And there they made Saul king before Jehovah in Gilgal and there they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Jehovah and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

¹⁸ Now David fled and escaped and came to Samuel to Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth. ¹⁹ And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.
²⁰ And Saul sent messengers to take David. And when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul and they also prophesied. ²¹ And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time and they also prophesied.
²² Then he also went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.
²³ And he went there to Naioth in Ramah and the Spirit of God came upon him also and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

³⁰ And Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down.
³¹ And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob to whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel will be your name. ³² And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah. And he made a trench around the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. ³³ And he put the wood in order and cut the bullock in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood. ³⁴ And he said, Do it the second time and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time and they did it the third time. ³⁵ And the water ran all around the altar and he also filled the trench with water.
³⁶ And it happened at the time of the offering of the evening oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and that I have done all these things at your word.
