¹ Saul was … years old when he began to reign. And when he had reigned two years over Israel, ² Saul chose for him three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
³ And Jonathan killed* the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear. ⁴ And all Israel heard say that Saul had struck the garrison of the Philistines and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal. ⁵ And the Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel: thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth-aven.
⁶ When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves and in thickets and in rocks and in coverts and in pits.
⁷ Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead, but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal and all the people followed him trembling. ⁸ And he stayed seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal and the people were scattered from him. ⁹ And Saul said, Bring here the burnt offering to me and the peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
¹⁰ And it happened that, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
¹¹ And Samuel said, What have you done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me and that you did not come within the days appointed and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash, ¹² therefore I said, Now the Philistines will come down upon me to Gilgal and I have not entreated the favor of Jehovah. I forced myself therefore and offered the burnt offering.
¹³ And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of Jehovah your God, which he commanded you. For now Jehovah would have established your kingdom upon Israel until everlasting, ¹⁴ but now your kingdom will not continue. Jehovah has sought for him a man after his own heart and Jehovah has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what Jehovah commanded you.
¹⁵ And Samuel arose and got up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men. ¹⁶ And Saul and Jonathan his son and the people that were present with them, abode in Geba of Benjamin, but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
¹⁷ And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies. One company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual, ¹⁸ and another company turned the way to Beth-horon and another company turned the way of the border that looks down upon the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
¹⁹ Now there was no blacksmith found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make for them swords or spears, ²⁰ but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen every man his share and his coulter and his axe and his mattock. ²¹ Yet they had a file for the mattocks and for the coulters and for the pitchforks and for the axes and to set the cattle-prods.
²² So it happened in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan. But with Saul and with Jonathan his son there was found. ²³ And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.

⁵ Your* lamb will be without blemish, a male a year old. You* will take it from the sheep, or from the goats.

⁶ With what shall I come before Jehovah and bow myself before the high God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?

²⁸ and Zelah, Eleph and the Jebusite (what is Jerusalem), Gibeath, and Kiriath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the sons of Benjamin according to their families.

¹² And his master said to him, We will not turn aside into the city of a foreigner that is not of the sons of Israel, but we will pass over to Gibeah.

¹¹ And he said, This will be the manner of the king who will reign over you*: he will take your* sons and appoint them to him for his chariots and to be his horsemen and they will run before his chariots.

²⁶ And Saul also went to his house to Gibeah and mighty men went with him, whose hearts God had touched.

⁵ And the Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel: thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth-aven.

²³ And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.

⁵ The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmash and the other on the south in front of Geba.

³¹ And they killed* of the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. And the people were very faint,

⁵² And there was great war against the Philistines all the days of Saul. And when Saul saw any mighty man, or any valiant man, he took him to him.

³⁴ Then Samuel went to Ramah and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

⁶ let seven men of his sons be delivered to us and we will hang them up to Jehovah in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of Jehovah. And the king said, I will give them.

²⁸ He has come to Aiah. He has passed through Migron. At Michmash he lays up his baggage. ²⁹ They have gone over the pass. They have taken up their lodging at Geba. Ramah trembles. Gibeah of Saul has fled.

²⁴ and Chephar-ammoni and Ophni and Geba; twelve cities with their villages.

¹⁷ And out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its suburbs, Geba with its suburbs,

²⁷ And it happened, when he came, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim. And the sons of Israel went down with him from the hill-country and he before them.

³⁴ But the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Gideon and he blew a trumpet and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

⁵ After that you will come to the hill of God where is the garrison of the Philistines. And it will happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery and a timbrel and a pipe and a harp, before them and they will be prophesying.

¹⁶ And Saul and Jonathan his son and the people that were present with them, abode in Geba of Benjamin, but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

¹ Now it fell upon a day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, Come and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison that is on yonder side. But he did not tell his father.
² And Saul abode in the outermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron. And the people who were with him were about six hundred men, ³ and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of Jehovah in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.
⁴ And between the passes by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines' garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side. And the name of the one was Bozez and the name of the other Seneh. ⁵ The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmash and the other on the south in front of Geba.
⁶ And Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, Come and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Jehovah will work for us, for there is no limitation to Jehovah to save by many or by few.

²⁸ So Joab blew the trumpet. And all the people stood still and pursued after Israel no more, neither did they fight any more.

¹ And there happened to be there a worthless fellow whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite. And he blew the trumpet and said, We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to his tents, O Israel.

¹⁴ And David was then in the stronghold and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.

²⁹ They have gone over the pass. They have taken up their lodging at Geba. Ramah trembles. Gibeah of Saul has fled.

¹⁰ All the land will be made like the Arabah, from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. And she will be lifted up and will dwell in her place, from Benjamin's gate to the place of the first gate, to the corner gate and from the tower of Hananel to the king's wine-presses.

³⁰ And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, You* have troubled me, to make me stink to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. And I being few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill* me and I will be destroyed, I and my house.

³⁴ that you* will say, Your servants have been keepers of cattle from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers, that you* may dwell in the land of Goshen, because every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.

²¹ and they said to them, Jehovah look upon you* and judge, because you* have made our fragrance to be stink in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill* us.

⁹ And Jehovah said to Joshua, This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you*. Therefore the name of that place was called Gilgal, to this day.

⁸ And you will go down before me to Gilgal. And behold, I will come down to you, to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings. You will abide seven days till I come to you and show you what you will do.

¹⁴ Then Samuel said to the people, Come and let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingdom there. ¹⁵ And all the people went to Gilgal. And there they made Saul king before Jehovah in Gilgal and there they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Jehovah and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

⁸ And I cut off the three shepherds in one month, for my soul was weary of them and their soul also loathed me.

¹⁷ that in blessing I will bless you and in multiplying I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is upon the sea _shore and your seed will possess the gate of his enemies

² And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Bethel and spoke to them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. And the men went up and spied out Ai.

⁴ And they went out, they and all their armies with them, many people, even as the sand that is upon the sea-shore in multitude, with horses and chariots, very many.

¹² And their border on the north quarter was from the Jordan and the border went up to the side of Jericho on the north and went up through the hill-country westward. And the goings out of it were at the wilderness of Beth-aven.

¹² And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the sons of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude and their camels were without number, as the sand which is upon the sea-shore for multitude.

²³ So Jehovah saved Israel that day and the battle passed over by Beth-aven.

⁹ Now, O Jehovah God, let your promise to David my father be established. For you have made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.

¹⁹ Your seed also would have been as the sand and the offspring of your guts like the grains of it. His name would not be cut off nor destroyed from before me.

⁸ Their widows have increased to me above the sand of the seas. I have brought upon them, against the mother of the young men, a destroyer at noonday. I have caused anguish and terrors to fall upon her suddenly.

¹⁵ Though you, Israel, play the prostitute, yet do not let Judah offend and do not come to Gilgal, nor go up to Beth-aven, nor swear, As Jehovah lives.

⁸ Blow you* the cornet in Gibeah and the trumpet in Ramah. Shout an alarm at Beth-aven, behind you, O Benjamin.

⁵ The inhabitants of Samaria will be in terror for the calves of Beth-aven. For the people of it will mourn over it and the priests of it, who rejoiced over it for the glory of it, because it has departed from it.

²⁷ Now Isaiah cries on behalf of Israel, ‘If the number of the sons of Israel is like the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved;

¹⁰ And when Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them and they were very afraid. And the sons of Israel cried out to Jehovah.
¹¹ And they said to Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt thus with us, to bring us forth out of Egypt? ¹² Is not this the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it were better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.

²⁰ And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven and they had no power to flee this way or that way. And the people who fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

² And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. And because of Midian the sons of Israel made for themselves the dens which are in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds.

⁹ And the sons of Ammon passed over the Jordan to also fight against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was exceedingly distressed.

⁴¹ And the men of Israel turned and the men of Benjamin were dismayed, for they saw that evil had come upon them.

¹¹ And both of them disclosed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

¹⁹ Then the Ziphites came up to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Does not David hide himself with us in the strongholds in the forest, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of the desert?

³ And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where was a cave and Saul went in to cover his feet. Now David and his men were abiding in the innermost parts of the cave.

¹⁴ And David said to Gad, I am in a great strait. Let us fall now into the hand of Jehovah, for his mercies are great and do not let me fall into the hand of man.

²² But this is a people robbed and plundered. They are all of them snared in holes and they are hid in prison-houses. They are for a prey and none delivers, for a spoil and none says, Restore.

²³ But I am troubled from the two ends, having the desire, that I should vacate and be together with Christ, but it is much better rather

³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in the wildernesses and mountains and caves and the holes of the earth.

¹⁷ And I will set my face against you* and you* will be struck before your* enemies. Those who hate you* will rule over you* and you* will flee when no man pursues you*.

³⁶ And as for those who are left of you*, I will send a faintness into their heart in the lands of their enemies. And the sound of a driven leaf will chase them and they will flee as a man flees from the sword and they will fall when no man pursues. ³⁷ And they will stumble one upon another, as it were before the sword, when no man pursues. And you* will have no power to stand before your* enemies.

¹ Now the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle. And when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle, ² the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the rulers of the congregation, saying, ³ Ataroth and Dibon and Jazer and Nimrah and Heshbon and Elealeh and Sebam and Nebo and Beon, ⁴ the land which Jehovah killed* before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle and your servants have cattle. ⁵ And they said, If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Bring us not over the Jordan.

³³ And Moses gave to them, even to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon King of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og King of Bashan, the land, according to the cities of it with their borders, even the cities of the land all around.
³⁴ And the sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer, ³⁵ and Atroth-shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah, ³⁶ and Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran: fortified cities and folds for sheep.
³⁷ And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities which they built.
³⁹ And the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it and dispossessed the Amorites that were in it. ⁴⁰ And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh and he dwelt in it. ⁴¹ And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the towns of it and called them Havvoth-jair. ⁴² And Nobah went and took Kenath and the villages of it and called it Nobah, after his own name.

¹² And we took this land in possession at that time. From Aroer, which is by the valley of the Arnon and half the hill-country of Gilead and the cities of it, I gave to the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

⁸ And the officers will speak further to the people and they will say, What man is there who is fearful and faint-hearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother's heart melt as his heart.

²⁵ Jehovah will cause you to be struck before your enemies. You will go out one way against them and will flee seven ways before them. And you will be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth.

²⁴ And Moses gave to the tribe of Gad, to the sons of Gad, according to their families. ²⁵ And their border was Jazer and all the cities of Gilead and half the land of the sons of Ammon, to Aroer that is before Rabbah, ²⁶ and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir, ²⁷ and in the valley, Beth-haram and Beth-nimrah and Succoth and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan and the border of it, to the outermost part of the sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan eastward. ²⁸ This is the inheritance of the sons of Gad according to their families, the cities and the villages of it.
²⁹ And Moses gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh and it was for the half-tribe of the sons of Manasseh according to their families. ³⁰ And their border was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities. ³¹ And half Gilead and Ashtaroth and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh, even for the half of the sons of Machir according to their families.

³ Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty-two thousand and there remained ten thousand.

¹⁰ They will walk after Jehovah, who will roar like a lion. For he will roar and the sons will come trembling from the west. ¹¹ They will come trembling as a bird out of Egypt and as a dove out of the land of Assyria. And I will make them to dwell in their houses, says Jehovah.

⁶ And there you* will bring your* burnt offerings and your* sacrifices and your* tithes and the heave offering of your* hand and your* vows and your* free-will offerings and the first-offspring of your* herd and of your* flock.

¹² therefore I said, Now the Philistines will come down upon me to Gilgal and I have not entreated the favor of Jehovah. I forced myself therefore and offered the burnt offering.
¹³ And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of Jehovah your God, which he commanded you. For now Jehovah would have established your kingdom upon Israel until everlasting,

¹⁸ And Saul said to Ahijah, Bring here the ark of God. For the ark of God was there at that time with the sons of Israel.

²¹ But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice to Jehovah your God in Gilgal.
²² And Samuel said, Has Jehovah as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Jehovah? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice and to listen than the fat of rams.

²⁵ And David built there an altar to Jehovah and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So Jehovah was entreated for the land and the plague was halted from Israel.

⁴ And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings upon that altar.

⁷ Rest in Jehovah and wait patiently for him. Do not inflame yourself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who makes wicked devices.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

²² Do not say, I will recompense evil. Wait for Jehovah and he will save you.

³ To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to Jehovah than sacrifice.

²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination. Much more when he brings it with a wicked mind!

³ He who slaughters an ox is as he who kills a man. He who sacrifices a lamb, as he who breaks a dog's neck. He who offers an oblation, as swine's blood. He who burns frankincense, as he who graces an idol.
Yes, they have chosen their own ways and their soul delights in their abominations.

⁴ And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem and said to the reapers, Jehovah be with you*. And they answered him, Jehovah bless you.

¹³ And Samuel came to Saul. And Saul said to him, You are blessed of Jehovah. I have performed the commandment of Jehovah.

⁸ Neither do those who go by say, The blessing of Jehovah be upon you*. We praise you in the name of Jehovah.

¹³ And Jehovah God said to the woman, What is this that you have done?
And the woman said, The serpent deceived me and I ate.

¹⁰ And he said, What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries to me from the ground.

¹⁹ And Joshua said to Achan, I beseech you, my son give glory to Jehovah, the God of Israel and make confession to him and tell me now what you have done. Hide it not from me.

² Saul chose for him three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

²⁴ Then Joab came to the king and said, What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you. Why is it that you have sent him away and he has gone?

²⁵ But he went in and stood before his master. And Elisha said to him, From where did you come, Gehazi? And he said, Your servant went nowhere.

²⁸ He has come to Aiah. He has passed through Migron. At Michmash he lays up his baggage.

⁷ Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Jehovah. And his name was Doeg the Edomite, the foremost of the herdsmen who belonged to Saul.

²⁶ And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now the kingdom will return to the house of David. ²⁷ If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of Jehovah at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah. And they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.

³ Say to God, How awesome are your works! Through the greatness of your power your enemies will submit themselves to you.

⁵ saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small and the shekel great and dealing falsely with balances of deceit,

⁷ Let each man give just-as he proposes in his heart; not out of sorrow or out of necessity; for God loves a joyful giver.

¹¹ I regret that I have set up Saul to be king, for he has turned back from following me and has not performed my commandments. And Samuel was angry and he cried out to Jehovah all night.

²² And Samuel said, Has Jehovah as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Jehovah? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice and to listen than the fat of rams.

²⁸ And Samuel said to him, Jehovah has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of your, who is better than you.

⁷ And Nathan said to David, You are the man. Jehovah says thus, the God of Israel, I anointed you king over Israel and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. ⁸ And I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your bosom and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if that had been too little, I would have added to you such and such things.
⁹ Why have you despised the word of Jehovah, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have slain him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.

¹⁸ And he answered, I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house, in that you* have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah and you have followed the Baals.

²⁰ And Ahab said to Elijah, Have you found me, O my enemy? And he answered, I have found you because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of Jehovah.

⁹ For the eyes of Jehovah run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong to those whose heart is perfect toward him. In this you have done foolishly, for from hereafter you will have wars.

² And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him and said to king Jehoshaphat, Should you help the wicked and love those who hate Jehovah? For this thing wrath is upon you from before Jehovah.

¹⁵ Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Amaziah. And he sent a prophet to him, who said to him, Why have you sought after the gods of the people, which have not delivered their own people out of your hand?
¹⁶ And it happened, as he talked with him, that the king said to him, Have we made you of the king's counsel? Cease. Why should you be struck? Then the prophet ceased and said, I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.

¹⁸ who says to a king, You are worthless, to ranking men, You * are wicked,

⁸ I will not reprove you for your sacrifices and your burnt offerings being continually before me. ⁹ I will take no bullock out of your house, nor male-goats out of your folds.
¹⁰ Because every beast of the forest is mine and the cattle upon a thousand hills. ¹¹ I know all the birds of the mountains and the wild beasts of the field are mine.
¹² If I were hungry, I would not tell you, because the world is mine and the fullness of it. ¹³ Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
¹⁴ Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving and pay your vows to the Most High. ¹⁵ And call upon me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you and you will glorify me.

³ The foolishness of a man subverts his way and his heart rages against Jehovah.

³ For Herod had took-hold of John, and bound him, and placed him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.
⁴ For John said to him, It is not legal for you to have her.

³⁰ Therefore Jehovah, the God of Israel, says, I said indeed that your house and the house of your father, should walk before me everlasting, but now Jehovah says, Be it far from me, for those who honor me I will honor and those who despise me will be lightly esteemed.

¹⁶ Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin and you will anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. And he will save my people out of the hand of the Philistines, for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.

¹ And Jehovah said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for me a king among his sons.

¹² And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and of a beautiful countenance and fine to look upon. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he.

² In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And Jehovah said to you, You will be shepherd of my people Israel and you will be prince over Israel.

¹⁵ but my loving kindness will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul whom I put away before you. ¹⁶ And your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever before you; your throne will be established until everlasting.

⁵ Turn back and say to Hezekiah the prince of my people, Jehovah says thus, the God of David your father, I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you. On the third day you will go up to the house of Jehovah.

⁷⁰ He also chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds.

¹⁹ Then you spoke in a vision to your holy ones and said, I have laid help upon a mighty man. I have exalted a chosen man out of the people.
²⁰ I have found David my servant. I have anointed him with my holy oil, ²¹ with whom my hand will be established. My arm also will strengthen him.
²² The enemy will not exact from him, nor the son of wickedness afflict him. ²³ And I will beat down his adversaries before him and kill* those who hate him, ²⁴ but my faithfulness and my loving kindness will be with him and in my name will his horn be exalted.
²⁵ I will also set his hand on the sea and his right hand on the rivers.
²⁶ He will cry to me, You are my Father, my God and the rock of my salvation. ²⁷ I also will make him firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
²⁸ I will keep my loving kindness for him everlasting. And my covenant will stand fast with him. ²⁹ I will also make his seed to endure forever and his throne as the days of heaven.
³⁰ If his sons forsake my law and do not walk in my ordinances, ³¹ if they break my statutes and do not keep my commandments, ³² then I will visit their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes, ³³ but my loving kindness I will not utterly take from him, nor allow my faithfulness to fail.
³⁴ I will not break my covenant, nor alter the thing that has gone out of my lips.
³⁵ I have sworn once by my holiness; I will not lie to David. ³⁶ His seed will endure everlasting and his throne as the sun before me. ³⁷ It will be established everlasting as the moon and as the faithful witness in the sky. Selah.

⁴⁶ David, who found favor in God’s sight, asked to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

²² And having removed him, he lifted up David to be king to them; to whom he also testified and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man according to my own heart, who will be practicing all my will.

¹⁰ For it was suitable for him, because of whom are all things and through whom are all things, having led many sons to glory, to complete the author of their salvation through sufferings.

⁶ When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves and in thickets and in rocks and in coverts and in pits.
⁷ Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead, but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal and all the people followed him trembling.

² And Saul abode in the outermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron. And the people who were with him were about six hundred men,

³ And Jonathan killed* the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

²³ and Avvim and Parah and Ophrah,

³ and Hazar-shual and Balah and Ezem,

¹¹ And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and killed* the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And it happened, that those who remained were scattered so that not two of them were left together.

¹⁵ And there was a trembling in the camp, in the field and among all the people. The garrison and the spoilers, they also trembled. And the earth quaked, so there was an exceedingly great trembling.

² that they made war with Bera King of Sodom and with Birsha King of Gomorrah, with Shinab King of Admah and with Shemeber King of Zeboiim and the King of Bela (which is Zoar).

¹¹ And it happened, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them to Azekah and they died. More died with the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword.

³ and it went down westward to the border of the Japhletites, to the border of Beth-horon the nether, even to Gezer. And the goings out of it were at the sea.

⁵ And the border of the sons of Ephraim according to their families was thus : the border of their inheritance eastward was Ataroth-addar, to Beth-horon the upper,

¹³ And the border passed along from there to Luz, to the side of Luz (what is Bethel), southward and the border went down to Ataroth-addar, by the mountain that lies on the south of Beth-horon the nether.
¹⁴ And the border extended and turned around on the west quarter southward, from the mountain that lies before Beth-horon southward. And the goings out of it were at Kiriath-baal (what is Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the west quarter.

⁶⁸ and Jokmeam with its suburbs and Beth-horon with its suburbs,

⁵ Also he built Beth-horon the upper and Beth-horon the lower, fortified cities, with walls, gates and bars,

³⁴ Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat,

⁸ How shall I give you up, Ephraim? How shall I cast you off, Israel? How shall I make you as Admah? How shall I set you as Zeboiim? My heart is turned within me. My compassions are kindled together.

⁸ They chose new gods, then war was in the gates. Was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?

¹⁴ And he carried away all Jerusalem and all the rulers and all the mighty men of valor, even ten thousand captives and all the craftsmen and the blacksmiths. None remained except the poorest sort of the people of the land.

¹⁶ Behold, I have created the smith who blows the fire of coals and brings forth a weapon for his work. And I have created the waster to destroy.

¹ Jehovah showed me, and behold, two baskets of figs set before the temple of Jehovah, after Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah and the rulers of Judah, with the craftsmen and smiths, from Jerusalem and had brought them to Babylon.

⁴⁷ and that all this assembly may know that Jehovah saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is Jehovah's and he will give you* into our hand.

⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone and killed* the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David.

⁶ Then he answered and spoke to me, saying, This is the word of Jehovah to Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says Jehovah of hosts.

²⁷ But God chose the foolish things of the world, in order that he might shame the wise, and God chose the weak things of the world, in order that he might shame the strong; ²⁸ and God chose the ignoble things of the world and the things which have been scorned and the things which are not, in order that he might do-away-with the things which are; ²⁹ that no flesh might boast in God’s sight.

⁷ But we have this treasure in clay vessels, in order that the excellence of the power may be from God and not from us.

² Saul chose for him three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
³ And Jonathan killed* the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

¹ Now it fell upon a day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, Come and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison that is on yonder side. But he did not tell his father.

⁴ And between the passes by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines' garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side. And the name of the one was Bozez and the name of the other Seneh. ⁵ The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmash and the other on the south in front of Geba.
