¹³ Whoever stops his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

⁷ If there is among you a poor man of one of your brothers inside any of your gates in your land which Jehovah your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother. ⁸ But you shall open your hand wide to him, and shall surely lend him enough for his need, that which he lacks. ⁹ Beware that there is not a thought in your wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand, and your eye may be evil against your poor brother, and you give him nothing. And he may cry to Jehovah against you, and it is sin to you. ¹⁰ You shall surely give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing Jehovah your God shall bless you in all your works, and in all that you put your hand to. ¹¹ For the poor shall never cease out of the land. Therefore, I command you saying, You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor, and to your needy, in your land.

¹ And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brothers the Jews. ² For certain ones said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many. Let us get grain for them, so that we may eat and live. ³ Some also said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses. Let us buy grain because of the famine. ⁴ And some said, We have borrowed money on our lands and vineyards for the king's tax. ⁵ Yet now our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our sons like their sons. And, lo, we bring our sons and our daughters into bondage, to be slaves, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage. And there is no power for our hand, for other men have our lands and vineyards.

¹³ Also I shook my lap and said, So let God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, who does not keep this promise, even may he be shaken out this way and emptied. And all the congregation said, amen, and praised Jehovah. And the people did according to this promise.

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save; even to Jehovah, but He did not answer them.

⁴ Their poison is like the poison of a snake; like the deaf adder, he stops his ear,

²⁸ Then they shall call upon me, and I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me;

²⁷ He who gives to the poor shall not lack, but he who hides his eyes shall have many a curse.

¹⁵ And when you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; yea, when you make many prayers, I will not hear; your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ learn to do good; seek judgment, reprove the oppressor. Judge the orphan, plead for the widow.

⁶ Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed ones go free, and that you break every yoke? ⁷ Is it not to break your bread to the hungry, and that you should bring home the wandering poor? When will you see the naked and cover him; and you will not hide yourself from your own flesh? ⁸ Then shall your light break out as the dawn, and your health shall spring out quickly; and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of Jehovah shall gather you. ⁹ Then you shall call, and Jehovah shall answer; you shall cry, and He shall say, Here I am. If you take the yoke away from among you, the pointing of the finger, and speaking vanity;

¹⁶ But you turned and defiled My name, and each man caused his slave, and each man caused his slave woman, whom you had set free to do as they pleased, to return. And you brought them into service to be slaves and slave women to you. ¹⁷ So Jehovah says this: You have not listened to Me to proclaim liberty each man to his brother, and each man to his neighbor! Behold, I call for freedom for you, says Jehovah, to the sword, to the plague, and to the famine. And I will cause you to be a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁹ So speaks Jehovah of Hosts, saying, Judge true judgment, and practice kindness and pity, each man to his brother. ¹⁰ And do not crush the widow or the orphan, the alien or the poor. And do not devise evil in your heart, of a man against his brother. ¹¹ But they refused to listen, and gave a stubborn shoulder, and made heavy their ears from hearing. ¹² And they made their hearts adamant from hearing the Law and the Words which Jehovah of Hosts has sent through His Spirit, by the former prophets. And great wrath came from Jehovah of Hosts. ¹³ And it will be, as He called, and they did not listen, so they called, and I did not listen, says Jehovah of Hosts.

¹⁴ For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you;

² For with whatever judgment you judge, you shall be judged; and with whatever measure you measure out, it shall be measured to you again.

³⁰ And he would not, but went and cast him into prison until he should pay the debt. ³¹ So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry. And they came and told their lord all that was done. ³² Then his lord, after he had called him, said to him, O wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. ³³ Should you not also have pitied your fellow servant, even as I had pity on you? ³⁴ And his lord was angry, and delivered him to the tormentors until he should pay all that was due to him. ³⁵ So likewise shall My heavenly Father do also to you, unless each one of you from your hearts forgive his brother their trespasses.

⁴¹ Then He also shall say to those on the left hand, Depart from Me, you cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the Devil and his angels. ⁴² For I was hungry, and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me no drink; ⁴³ I was a stranger and you did not take Me in; I was naked, and you did not clothe Me; I was sick, and in prison, and you did not visit me. ⁴⁴ Then they will also answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to You? ⁴⁵ Then He shall answer them, saying, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me. ⁴⁶ And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into everlasting life.

²⁵ And once the Master of the house has risen up and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us, and He shall answer and say to you, I do not know you; from where are you;

⁵⁷ And crying out with a loud voice, they stopped their ears and ran on him with one accord.

¹³ For he who has shown no mercy shall have judgment without mercy, and mercy exults over judgment. ¹⁴ My brothers, what profit is it if a man says he has faith and does not have works? Can faith save him? ¹⁵ If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and if one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, but you do not give them those things which are needful to the body, what good is it?
