¹⁸ And say to the people, Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat flesh. For you have wept in the ears of the Lord, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat, for it was well with us in Egypt? Therefore Jehovah will give you flesh, and you shall eat.

² Then Jacob said to his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods among you, and be clean, and change your garments.

³ And the sons of Israel said to them, O that we had died by the hand of Jehovah in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh-pots, when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us forth into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger. ⁴ Then Jehovah said to Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from the heavens for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain amount every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My Law or not. ⁵ And on the sixth day it shall happen, they shall prepare what they bring in. And it shall be twice as much as they gather day by day. ⁶ And Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, At evening, then you shall know that Jehovah has brought you out from the land of Egypt. ⁷ And in the morning, then you shall see the glory of Jehovah. For He hears your murmurings against Jehovah. And what are we, that you murmur against us?

¹⁰ And Jehovah said to Moses, Go to the people and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes.

¹⁵ And he said to the people, Be ready for the third day. Do not approach a woman.

¹ And the people were evil, as those complaining in the ears of Jehovah. And Jehovah heard, and His anger was kindled. And the fire of Jehovah burned among them and devoured in the outermost parts of the camp.

⁴ And the mixed multitude in their midst lusted with great lust. And the sons of Israel also turned and wept, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? ⁵ We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic. ⁶ But now our soul is dried away; there is nothing at all besides this manna before our eyes.

² And all the sons of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. And the whole congregation said to them, Oh that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or, Oh that we had died in the wilderness! ³ And why has Jehovah brought us into this land to fall by the sword, so that our wives and our sons should be a prey? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?

¹³ Up! Sanctify the people and say, Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow. For thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, A cursed thing is in the midst of you, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the cursed thing from among you.

² And the people came to the house of God and stayed there until evening before God, and lifted up their voice and wept grievously,

³⁹ to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but thrust him away and turned back again to Egypt in their hearts,
