³⁶ For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?

⁴ And Satan answered Jehovah and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man has he will give for his life.

² Can a man be useful to God, as he who is wise may be useful to himself?

¹⁷ for when he dies he shall take nothing away; his glory shall not go down after him.

¹⁸ Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down into ruin. ¹⁹ How have they been brought into grief, as in a moment! They are fully eaten up with terrors, ²⁰ like a dream when one awakens; so, O Jehovah, when You awake, You shall despise their image.

¹⁴ You have said, It is vain to serve God; and, What profit is it that we have kept His charge, and that we have walked as mourners before Jehovah of Hosts?

⁸ Again, the Devil took Him up into a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. ⁹ And he said to Him, All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me. ¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, Go, Satan! For it is written, "You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve."

²⁵ For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world and loses himself, or is cast away?

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat drink and be merry. ²⁰ But God said to him, Fool! This night your soul shall be required of you, then whose shall be those things which you have prepared?

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man who was customarily clothed in purple and fine linen and making merry in luxury every day. ²⁰ And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. But even the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it happened that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich one also died and was buried. ²³ And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

²¹ What fruit did you have then in those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

⁷ But whatever things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. ⁸ But no, rather, I also count all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them to be dung, so that I may win Christ ⁹ and be found in Him; not having my own righteousness, which is of the Law, but through the faith of Christ, the righteousness of God by faith,

²⁴ Having become great, Moses by faith refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, ²⁵ choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a time, ²⁶ esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.

⁹ But let the humble brother rejoice in his exaltation; ¹⁰ and the rich one rejoice in his humiliation, because he shall pass away as the flower of the grass. ¹¹ For the sun rose with the hot wind and dried up the grass, and its flower fell out, and the beauty of its appearance perished; so also the rich one will fade away in his ways.

⁷ As much as she has glorified herself and has lived in luxury, so much torment and sorrow give her. For she says in her heart, I sit as a queen, and I am not a widow; and I do not see mourning at all. ⁸ Therefore her plagues will come in one day, death and mourning and famine. And she will be consumed with fire, for the Lord God who judges her is strong.
