And you shall know that I am Jehovah when I set My face against them. ⁸ And I will make the land to be desolate, because they have committed a treacherous act, says the Lord Jehovah.

⁷ And afterward, says Jehovah, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and those who are left in this city from the plague, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life. And he shall strike them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, nor have pity, nor have mercy.

So your land is a waste, and a wonder, and a curse, without anyone in it, as it is today. ²³ Because you have burned incense, and because you have sinned against Jehovah, and have not obeyed the voice of Jehovah, nor walked in His Law, nor in His statutes, nor did you walk in His testimonies, therefore this evil has happened to you, as at this day. ²⁴ And Jeremiah said to all the people, and to all the women, Hear the Word of Jehovah, all Judah that is in the land of Egypt. ²⁵ So says Jehovah of Hosts, the God of Israel, saying: You and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hands, saying, We will surely fulfil our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her. You will surely fulfil your vows and surely carry out your vows. ²⁶ Therefore hear the Word of Jehovah, all Judah that lives in the land of Egypt. Behold, I have sworn by My great name, says Jehovah, that My name will no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord Jehovah lives. ²⁷ Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good. And all the men of Judah in the land of Egypt shall be destroyed by the sword and by the famine, until there is an end of them.

³ And say, So says the Lord Jehovah: A great eagle with great wings, long of pinion, full of feathers, who had different colors, came to Lebanon and took the highest branch of the cedar. ⁴ He plucked off the top of its young twigs and carried it into a land of traders. He set it in a city of merchants. ⁵ He also took of the seed of the land and planted it in a fruitful field. He placed it by great waters and set it as a willow tree. ⁶ And it grew and became a spreading low vine, whose branches turned toward him. And its roots were under him. So it became a vine and brought out branches and shot out boughs. ⁷ There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers. And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him and shot out its branches toward him, that he might water it, away from the beds of its planting. ⁸ It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring out branches, and that it might bear fruit, to be a splendid vine. ⁹ Say, So says the Lord Jehovah: Shall it prosper? Shall he not pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, and wither it? All the leaves of its sprouting shall wither, and not with great arm, nor by many people shall any raise it by its roots. ¹⁰ And behold, being planted, shall it prosper? Shall it not utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It shall wither in the beds where it sprouted.

²⁰ And I will spread My net on him, and he shall be taken in My snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and I will judge him there with his sin which he has sinned against Me.

¹⁴ And fire has gone out from a rod of her branches, which has licked up her fruit so that there is no strong rod in her to be a scepter to rule. This is a mourning and shall be for a mourning.

³⁸ And I will purge out from among you the rebels and those who sin against Me. I will bring them out from the land where they reside, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am Jehovah.

So says the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall burn up every green tree in you, and every dry tree among you. The flaming flame shall not be put out, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned in it. ⁴⁸ And all flesh shall see that I Jehovah have kindled it. It shall not be put out.

¹ Israel is a luxuriant vine; he brings out fruit to himself. According to the multitude of his fruit, he has increased the altars. They have made beautiful images according to the goodness of his land.

There was a certain housemaster who planted a vineyard and hedged it round about, and dug a winepress in it, and built a tower, and rented it to vinedressers, and went into a far country. ³⁴ And when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers to receive its fruits. ³⁵ And the vinedressers took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. ³⁶ Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did the same to them. ³⁷ But last of all he sent his son to them, saying, They will respect my son. ³⁸ But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and get hold of his inheritance. ³⁹ And taking him, they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. ⁴⁰ Therefore when the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers? ⁴¹ They said to Him, Bad men! He will miserably destroy them and will rent out his vineyard to other vinedressers who will give him the fruits in their seasons.

What then shall the lord of the vineyard do to them? ¹⁶ He shall come and destroy these vinedressers and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard this, they said, Let it not be!

And they gather and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
