⁶ And they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, which was in the court of the prison. And they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And there was no water in the pit, only mud. So Jeremiah sank into the mud.

⁵² My haters have hunted me, like a bird, without cause. ⁵³ They have cut off my life in the pit, and cast a stone at me. ⁵⁴ Waters flowed over my head; then I said, I am cut off.

¹⁶ Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions' den. The king answered and said to Daniel, Your God, whom you always serve, will deliver you. ¹⁷ And a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den. And the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords, that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.

⁸ For, brothers, we would not have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength; so much so that we despaired even of life. ⁹ But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, so that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; ¹⁰ who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver; in whom we trust that He will yet deliver us,

¹⁷ For the lightness of our present affliction works out for us a far more excellent eternal weight of glory,

¹² Beloved, do not be astonished at the fiery trial which is to try you, as though a strange thing happened to you, ¹³ but rejoice according as you are partakers of Christ's suffering, so that when His glory shall be revealed, you may be glad also with exceeding joy.
