²⁶ When the heavens shall be shut up, and there is no rain because they have sinned against You; if they pray toward this place, and confess Your name, and turn from their sin when You afflict them,

¹⁹ And I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your heaven like iron and your earth like bronze.

¹⁷ and Jehovah's wrath be kindled against you, and He shut up the heavens so that there will be no rain, and so that the land will not yield her fruit, and you perish quickly from off the good land which Jehovah gives you.

²³ And your heavens over your head shall be bronze, and the earth that is under you iron.

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, of the sojourners of Gilead, said to Ahab, As Jehovah, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except according to my word. ² And the Word of Jehovah came to him, saying, ³ Go away from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, before Jordan. ⁴ And it shall be, you shall drink of the brook. And I have commanded the ravens to feed you there. ⁵ So he went and did according to the Word of Jehovah. For he went and lived by the torrent Cherith, before Jordan. ⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the torrent. ⁷ And it happened after a while, the torrent dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. ⁸ And the Word of Jehovah came to him, saying, ⁹ Arise, go to Zarephath which belongs to Sidon, and live there. Behold, I have commanded a widow to keep you there. ¹⁰ And he arose and went to Zarephath, and came in to the entrance of the city, and, behold, the widow was gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, Please, bring me a little water in a vessel so that I may drink. ¹¹ And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, Please, bring me a piece of bread in your hand. ¹² And she said, As Jehovah your God lives, I do not have a cake, but only a handful of meal in a pitcher and a little oil in a jar. And behold, I am gathering two sticks, so that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, so that we may eat it and die. ¹³ And Elijah said to her, Do not fear, go. Do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it, and bring it to me. And then make for you and for your son. ¹⁴ For so says Jehovah, the God of Israel, The pitcher of meal shall not be emptied, nor shall the jar of oil fail, until the day that Jehovah sends rain on the earth. ¹⁵ And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah. And she and he and her house ate many days; ¹⁶ the pitcher of meal was not consumed, and the jar of oil did not fail, according to the Word of Jehovah which He spoke by Elijah. ¹⁷ And it happened after these things the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick. And his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. ¹⁸ And she said to Elijah, What do I have to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to call my sin to remembrance and to kill my son?

¹² And when he was in affliction, he sought Jehovah his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. ¹³ And he prayed to Him, and He was entreated of him, and heard his prayer, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. And Manasseh knew that Jehovah is God.

¹³ He who covers his sins shall not be blessed; but whoever confesses and leaves them shall have mercy.

⁶ and I will lay it waste; it shall not be pruned nor dug; but briers and thorns shall come up. And I will command the clouds that they rain no rain on it.

¹ So says Jehovah, Where is your mother's bill of divorce, whom I have put away? Or to which of My creditors have I sold you? Behold, you were sold for your iniquities, and your mother is put away for your sins. ² Who knows why I have come, and no one is here? I called and no one answered. Is My hand shortened at all so that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at My rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness; their fish stink, because there is no water, and die for thirst.

¹ The Word of Jehovah that came to Jeremiah concerning the matter of droughts. ² Judah mourns, and its gates droop. They are black to the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem has gone up. ³ And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters; they came to the cisterns, and found no water. They returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads. ⁴ Because the ground was cracked, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed; they covered their heads. ⁵ Yea, the doe also calved in the field and forsook it, because there was no grass. ⁶ And the wild asses stood in the high places; they snuffed up the wind like jackals; their eyes failed because there was no grass. ⁷ O Jehovah, though our iniquities testify against us, act for Your name's sake; for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against You. ⁸ O the Hope of Israel, its Savior in time of trouble, why should You be as a stranger in the land, and as a traveler turning in to lodge? ⁹ Why should You be as a man stunned, as one mighty, yet who cannot save? Yet You, O Jehovah, are in our midst, and we are called by Your name. Do not leave us!

¹³ Son of man, when a land sins against Me by traitorous betraying, then I will stretch out My hand on it, and will break the staff of its bread, and will send famine on it, and will cut off man and beast from it.

²⁷ Again, when the wicked turns away from his wickedness that he has committed and does that which is lawful and righteous, he shall save his soul alive. ²⁸ Because he looks carefully, and turns away from all his sins that he has committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. ²⁹ Yet says the house of Israel: The way of Jehovah is not fair. O house of Israel, are not My ways fair? Are not your ways unfair? ³⁰ So I will judge you, O house of Israel, each one of you according to his ways, says the Lord Jehovah. Turn and be made to turn from all your sins; and iniquity shall not be your stumbling-block. ³¹ Cast away from you all your sins by which you have sinned; and make you a new heart and a new spirit; for why will you die, O house of Israel? ³² For I have no delight in the death of him who dies, says the Lord Jehovah. Therefore turn and live.

¹⁵ I will go; I will return to My place until they confess their guilt and seek My face; in their affliction they will seek Me diligently.

¹³ Gird up and lament, priests; howl, ministers of the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, ministers of my God. For the food offering and the drink offering are held back from the house of your God. ¹⁴ Set apart a fast; call a solemn gathering; gather the elders and all the people of the land into the house of Jehovah your God, and cry to the Lord, ¹⁵ Alas for the day! For the day of Jehovah is at hand, and it shall come as a ruin from the Almighty. ¹⁶ Is not the food cut off before our eyes, and joy and gladness from the house of our God? ¹⁷ The seed is rotten under their clods; the storage bins are laid waste; the barns are broken down, for the grain has dried up. ¹⁸ How the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are troubled because they have no pasture. Yes, the flocks of sheep are destroyed. ¹⁹ O Jehovah, to You will I cry; for the fire has burned up the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field. ²⁰ The beasts of the field also cry to You; for the rivers of water are dried up, and the fire has burned up the pastures of the wilderness.

¹⁵ Blow a trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn gathering. ¹⁶ Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, gather the elders, gather the children and those who suck the breasts. Let the bridegroom go forth out of his chamber, and the bride out of her room. ¹⁷ Let the priests, the ministers of Jehovah, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Have pity on Your people, O Jehovah, and give not Your inheritance to shame, for a proverb among those of the nations. Why should they say among the people, Where is their God?

⁴ Come to Bethel and transgress; to Gilgal and multiply transgressing at Gilgal. And bring your sacrifices for the morning, your tithes for three years; ⁵ and offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving from that which is leavened, and cry out; call out the voluntary offerings! For so you love to do, O sons of Israel, says the Lord Jehovah. ⁶ And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places, and you have not returned to Me, says Jehovah. ⁷ And I have also withheld the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest. And I caused rain to fall on one city and caused it not to rain on another city; one piece was rained on, and the piece on which it did not rain dried up. ⁸ So two or three cities wandered to one city to drink water, but they were not satisfied; yet you have not returned to Me, says Jehovah. ⁹ I have stricken you with blasting and mildew. When your gardens and your vineyards, and your fig trees. and your olive trees increased, the creeping locust devoured them; yet you have not returned to Me, says Jehovah.

²⁵ But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land.

⁶ These have authority to shut up the heaven, that it may not rain in the days of their prophecy. And they have authority over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire.
