² Therefore when you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, just as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the market places, so that they may be glorified by men. Truly I say to you, that they have already received their reward.

¹⁸ For truly I tell you, Until heaven and earth pass away, not even one yoth * or a dash shall pass away from the law until all of it is fulfilled.

⁵ And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who like to pray, standing in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, that they have already received their reward.

¹⁶ When you fast, do not look sad like the hypocrites; for they disfigure their faces, so that they may appear to men that they are fasting. Truly I say to you, that they have already received their reward.

⁵ O hypocrites, first take out the beam from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to get out the splinter from your brotherÆs eye.

⁷ O you hypocrites, the prophet Isaiah well prophesied concerning you and said,

³ And in the morning you say, It is a winter day, for the sky is red and cloudy. O hypocrites, you know how to judge the face of the sky, but the signs of the present time you are not able to distinguish.

¹⁸ But Jesus knew their evil, and said, Why do you tempt me, O hypocrites?

⁶ And they like the chief places at feasts, and the front seats in the synagogues,

¹³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you embezzle the property of widows, with the pretense that you make long prayers; because of this you shall receive a greater judgment.* ¹⁴ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you have shut off the kingdom of heaven against men; for you do not enter into it yourselves, and do not permit those who would enter. ¹⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you traverse sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him the son of hell twice more than yourselves. ¹⁶ Woe to you, blind guides, for you say, Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold which is in the temple, he is guilty! ¹⁷ O you fools and blind! for which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? ¹⁸ And whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the offering that is on it, he is guilty. ¹⁹ O you fools and blind! for which is greater, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering? ²⁰ Therefore he who swears by the altar, he swears by it and by everything that is on it. ²¹ And whoever swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it. ²² And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it. ²³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you take tithes on mint, dill, and cummin, and you have overlooked the more important matters of the law, such as justice, mercy, and trustworthiness. These were necessary for you to have done, and the same by no means to have left undone. ²⁴ O blind guides, who strain at gnats and swallow camels! ²⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of extortion and iniquity. ²⁶ Blind Pharisees! clean first the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that their outside may also be clean. ²⁷ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like tombs painted white, which look beautiful from the outside, but inside are full of dead bones and all kinds of corruption. ²⁸ Even so, from the outside you appear to men to be righteous, but from within you are full of iniquity and hypocrisy. ²⁹ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs of the prophets, and you decorate the graves of the righteous;

⁵¹ And he will severely scourge him, and give him a portion like that of the hypocrites; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁶ He said to them, The prophet Isaiah well prophesied about you, O hypocrites, as it is written, This people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far away from me.

³⁹ And the front seats in the synagogues, and the head places at banquets;

²⁴ But woe to you, rich men! for you have already received your comforts.

⁴² Or how can you say to your brother, My brother, let me take out the splinter from your eye, when behold, you do not see the beam in your own eye? O hypocrites, first take out the beam from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the splinter from your brotherÆs eye.

⁴¹ But give alms of what you have; and, behold, everything will be clean to you.

⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! for you love chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the streets.

³³ Sell your possessions and give them as alms; make for yourselves purses which do not wear out, and a treasure in heaven that does not run short, where the thief does not come near, and moth does not destroy.

⁵⁶ O you hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the earth and of the sky; how then is it that you do not discern this time?

¹⁵ Jesus answered and said to him, O hypocrites, does not each one of you loosen his ox or his ass, from the manger, and go with it to give it drink?

⁴⁶ Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and love to be greeted in the streets, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the high places at the banquets;

⁴¹ I do not receive any praise from men.

⁴⁴ How can you believe, when you accept praise one from another, but the praise from God only, you do not want?

¹⁸ He who speaks of his own accord seeks glory for himself; but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him, he is true, and there is no deception in his heart.

²⁹ For some of them thought, because the purse was with Judas, that he ordered him to buy what was needed for the feast; or to give something to the poor.

³⁶ Now there was in the city of Joppa a woman disciple called TabÆi-tha, which means gazelle and interpreted Dorcas; she was rich in good works and in charitable acts.

² A righteous and God-fearing man as were all his household; which gave much alms to the people, and always sought after God.

⁴ And he looked at the angel and was afraid, and he said, What is it, my LORD? And the angel said to him, Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.

³¹ And said to me, Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are a memorial before God.

²⁹ Then the disciples, each one according to his ability, determined to set aside for relief to the brethren who dwelt in Ju-dµÆa.

¹⁷ Now after many years, I came to my own people to distribute alms and to present an offering.

⁸ Some of consolation, in consoling: he that gives, let him do it with sincerity; he that rules, with diligence; he that shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

⁶ But remember this, He who sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he who sows generously shall reap also generously. ⁷ So let every man give according to what he has decided in his mind, not grudgingly or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver. ⁸ God is able to make all goodness abound to you, and may you always have enough of everything for yourselves, and may you abound in every good work: ⁹ As it is written, He has distributed liberally; and given to the poor; and his righteousness endures for ever. ¹⁰ Now he who gives seed to the sower, and bread for food, will supply and multiply your seed, and cause the fruits of your righteousness to grow; ¹¹ That you may be enriched in everything, in all liberality, for such generosity enables us to perfect thanksgiving to God. ¹² For the administration of this service not only supplies the wants of the saints, but it also is made abundant by many thanksgivings to God. ¹³ By this experiment of charitable service they glorify God in that you have subjected yourselves to the faith of the gospel of Christ, and through your generosity you have become partakers with them and with all men, ¹⁴ And they offer prayer on your behalf with greater love, because of the abundance of the grace of God which has been on you. ¹⁵ Thanks be to God for his incomparable gift.

¹⁰ Only they would that we should remember the poor; and that I have endeavored to do.

²⁸ From henceforth let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor with his hands and do good deeds, that he may have something to give to him who is in need.

⁶ And we have not sought support from men, neither from you, nor from others, when we could have been burdensome on you for our maintenance, as the apostles of Christ should be.

¹⁸ That they do good works, and become rich in good deeds, and be ready to give and willing to share,

⁷ For we have great joy and consolation in your love, and the hearts of the saints are refreshed.

¹⁶ And do not forget kindness and fellowship with the poor: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

¹⁵ If a brother or sister be naked, and lacking of daily food, ¹⁶ And one of you say to them, Depart in peace, be warmed, and be filled; yet you do not give to them those things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?

¹¹ If any man preach, let him preach the word of God; and if any man minister, let him do it according to the ability which God has given him: so that in everything you do, God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs glory and honour for ever and ever. Amen.

¹⁷ Whoever has worldly goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts his mercy from him, how can the love of God dwell in him? ¹⁸ My children, let us not love one another in word and in tongue, but in deed and in truth. ¹⁹ And by this we shall know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before he comes.
