⁵⁵ The high priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus so that they might put him to death; but they could not find it.

²² But I say to you, that whoever becomes angry with his brother for no reason, is guilty before the court: and whoever should say to his brother, Raca (which means, I spit on you) is guilty before the congregation; and whoever says to his brother, you are a nurse maid, is condemned to hell fire.

⁵⁹ Now the high priests and the elders and the whole council were seeking witnesses against Jesus, so that they might put him to death. ⁶⁰ But they could not find any; then there came a great many false witnesses; but at the end two came forward,

¹¹ Then they sent men and instructed them to say, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. ¹² And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they rose up against him and seized him and brought him into the midst of the council. ¹³ And they appointed false witnesses who said, This man does not cease to speak against the law and against this holy land:

¹ AND after five days An-a-niÆas the high priest went down with the elders, together with Ter-tulÆlus, the orator, and they informed the governor against Paul. ² And when he was called forth, Ter-tulÆlus began to accuse him, saying, It is through you that we enjoy great tranquility, and owing to your care many excellent things have been done for this people. ³ And we all, everywhere, receive your favors, O most excellent FeÆlix. ⁴ But while I desire not to weary you with lengthy discussions, nevertheless, I beg you to hear in brief our humble complaint. ⁵ We have found this man to be a pestilent fellow and a worker of sedition among the Jews throughout the world, for he is the ringleader of the sect of the NazÆa-renes. ⁶ He sought to defile our temple: therefore when we seized him, we would have judged him according to our law. ⁷ But the chief captain LysÆias came, and by force took him away out of our hands and sent him to you, ⁸ Then he commanded his accusers to come to you. Now when you question him, you can learn for yourself concerning all these things of which we accuse him. ⁹ The Jews also witnessed against him, declaring that these things were true. ¹⁰ Then the governor beckoned to Paul to speak. Paul answered and said, For in as much as I know that you have been a judge for many years to this people, therefore I do the more cheerfully answer in my own defense: ¹¹ So that you may understand, that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem to worship. ¹² And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, nor have I had an assembly either in their synagogues or in the city: ¹³ Nor can they prove before you the things of which they accuse me.

¹⁶ Having a good conscience; so that they who speak evil of you, as of evil doers, may be ashamed as men who belittle your good works in Christ. ¹⁷ For it is better, if it is the will of God, that you suffer for good deeds, rather than for evil doing. ¹⁸ For Christ also once suffered for our sins, a just man for sinners, that he might bring you to God, wherefore while he died in the flesh, he lives in the Spirit.
