²¹ Was not our father Abraham justified by works, when he raised Isaac his son upon the altar?

⁹ And do not think and say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father; for I say to you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones.

³⁷ For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be found guilty.

³¹ When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all his holy angels with him, then he will sit upon the throne of his glory. ³² And all nations will gather before him; and he will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; ³³ And he will set the sheep at his right, and the goats at his left. ³⁴ Then the King will say to those at his right, Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom which has been prepared for you from the foundation of the world. ³⁵ For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger and you took me in; ³⁶ I was naked, and you covered me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me. ³⁷ Then the righteous will say to him, Our Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you? or thirsty and gave you drink? ³⁸ And when did we see you a stranger, and took you in? Or that you were naked, and covered you? ³⁹ And when did we see you sick, or in the prison, and come to you? ⁴⁰ The king then will answer and say to them, Truly I tell you, Inasmuch as you have done it to one of these least brethren, you did it to me.

⁷³ And the oaths which he swore to Abraham our father,

²⁴ And he called in a loud voice and said, O my father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and wet my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

³⁰ But he said to him, No, my father Abraham; but if only a man from the dead go to them, they will repent.

³⁹ They answered and said to him, Our own father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were the sons of Abraham, you would be doing the works of Abraham.

⁵³ Why, are you greater than our father Abraham who died, and the prophets who died? Whom do you make yourself?

² He said, Men, brethren and our fathers, harken: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was still in Mes-opo- taÆmi-a before he came to dwell in HaÆran.

²⁰ For by the deeds of the law, no flesh shall be justified before his presence: for by means of the law, sin is known.

¹ WHAT then shall we say concerning Abraham, the chief of our forefathers, who lived according to the flesh before God called him?

¹² So that the father of circumcision is not only to those who are of circumcision, but also to those who walk in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham while he was yet uncircumcised.

¹⁶ Therefore it is by faith that we will be justified by grace; so that the promise might be sure to all his seed; not only to him who is of the law, but also to him who is of the faith of Abraham who is the father of us all,

¹⁸ For a man may say, You have faith, and I have works: show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

²⁴ You see then, how a man by works becomes righteous, and not by faith only.
