¹ Weary in my soul, I will pour my words with groans upon him: I will speak being straitened in the bitterness of my soul. ² And I will say to the Lord, Do not teach me to be impious; and therefore have you thus judged me? ³ Is it good before you if I be unrighteous? for you have disowned the work of your hands, and attended to the counsel of the ungodly. ⁴ Or do you see as a mortal sees? or will you look as a man sees? ⁵ Or is your life human, or your years [the years] of a man, ⁶ that you have enquired into mine iniquity, and searched out my sins? ⁷ For you know that I have not committed iniquity: but who is he that can deliver out of your hands? ⁸ Your hands have formed me and made me; afterwards you did change [your mind], and strike me. ⁹ Remember that you have made me [as] clay, and you do turn me again to earth. ¹⁰ Hast you not poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese? ¹¹ And you did clothe me with skin and flesh, and frame me with bones and sinews. ¹² And you did bestow upon me life and mercy, and your oversight has preserved my spirit. ¹³ Having these things in yourself, I know that you can do all things; for nothing is impossible with you. ¹⁴ And if I should sin, you watch me; and you have not cleared me from iniquity. ¹⁵ Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me: and if I should be righteous, I can’t lift myself up, for I am full of dishonor. ¹⁶ For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again you have changed and are terribly destroying me; ¹⁷ renewing against me my torture: and you have dealt with me in great anger, and you have brought trials upon me. ¹⁸ Why then did you bring me out of the womb? and why did I not die, and no eye see me, ¹⁹ and I become as if I had not been? for why was I not carried from the womb to the grave? ²⁰ Is not the time of my life short? suffer me to rest a little, ²¹ before I go whence I shall not return, to a land of darkness and gloominess; ²² to a land of perpetual darkness, where there is no light, neither [can any one] see the life of mortals.

¹⁵ And if you do thus to me, kill me utterly, if I have found favor with you, that I may not see my affliction.

⁴ And he himself went a day's journey in the wilderness, and came and sat under a juniper tree; and asked concerning his life that he might die, and said, Let it be enough now, O Lord, take, I pray you, my life from me; for I am no better than my fathers.

²⁰ For why is light given to those who are in bitterness, and life to those souls which are in griefs? ²¹ who desire death, and obtain it not, digging [for it] as [for] treasures; ²² and would be very joyful if they should gain it? ²³ Death [is] rest to [such] a man, for God has hedged him in.

¹⁵ and let them perish in war, and let the weak escape from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ And let the weak have hope, but the mouth of the unjust be stopped.

²⁰ In famine he shall deliver you from death: and in war he shall free you from the power of the sword.

² Oh that one would indeed weigh the wrath that is upon me, and take up my griefs in a balance together! ³ And verily they would be heavier than the sand by the seashore: but, as it seems, my words are vain. ⁴ For the arrows of the Lord are in my body, whose violence drinks up my blood: whenever I am going to speak, they pierce me.

⁸ For oh that he would grant [my desire], and my petition might come, and the Lord would grant my hope! ⁹ Let the Lord begin and wound me, but let him not utterly destroy me.

²⁶ Neither will your reproof cause me to cease my words, for neither will I endure the sound of your speech.

¹¹ Then neither will I refrain my mouth: I will speak being in distress; being in anguish I will disclose the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁶ For I shall not live for ever, that I should patiently endure: depart from me, for my life [is] vain.

²¹ For even if I have sinned, I know it not [in] my soul: but my life is taken away.

¹⁵ Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me: and if I should be righteous, I can’t lift myself up, for I am full of dishonor. ¹⁶ For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again you have changed and are terribly destroying me;

¹³ For oh that you had kept me in the grave, and had hidden me until your wrath should cease, and you should set me a time in which you would remember me!

⁶ And would there were strength in my mouth, and I would not spare the movement of my lips. ⁷ For if I should speak, I shall not feel the pain of my wound: and if I should be silent, how shall I be wounded the less? ⁸ But now he has made me weary, and a worn-out fool; and you have laid hold of me. ⁹ My falsehood has become a testimony, and has risen up against me: it has confronted me to my face. ¹⁰ In his anger he has cast me down; he has gnashed his teeth upon me: the weapons of his robbers have fallen upon me. ¹¹ He has attacked me with the keen glances of his eyes; with his sharp [spear] he has struck me [down] upon my knees; and they have run upon me with one accord. ¹² For the Lord has delivered me into the hands of unrighteous men, and thrown me upon the ungodly. ¹³ When I was at peace he distracted me: he took me by the hair of the head, and plucked it out: he set me up as a mark. ¹⁴ They surrounded me with spears, aiming at my reins: without sparing [me] they poured out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁵ They overthrew me with fall upon fall: they ran upon me in [their] might. ¹⁶ They sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and my strength has been spent on the ground.

⁴ Yes verily, I have erred in truth, (but the error abides with myself) in having spoken words which it was not right [to speak]; and my words err, and are unreasonable.

² Hear you⌃, hear you⌃ my words, that I may not have this consolation from you. ³ Raise me, and I will speak; then you⌃ shall not laugh me to scorn. ⁴ What! is my reproof of man? and why should I not be angry?

³ Sing to him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise. ⁴ For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are faithful. ⁵ He loves mercy and judgment; the earth is full the mercy of the Lord.

¹⁷ For you have chosen my soul, that it should not perish: and you have cast all [my] sins behind me.

³ And now, Lord God, take my life from me; for [it is] better for me to die than to live.

⁸ And it came to pass at the rising of the sun, that God commanded a burning east wind; and the sun struck on the head of Jonas, and he fainted, and despaired of his life, and said, [It is] better for me to die than to live.

⁵ But be you early in prayer to the Lord Almighty. ⁶ If you are pure and true, he will listen to your supplication, and will restore to you the habitation of righteousness.

²⁹ But since I am ungodly, why have I not died?

³¹ For [there is] one that says to the Mighty One, I have received [blessings]; I will not take a pledge: ³² I will see apart from myself: do you show me if I have done unrighteousness; I will not do [so] any more.

¹ For the End, a Psalm of David among the Hymns for the eighth. O Lord, rebuke me not in your wrath, neither chasten me in your anger. ² Pity me, O Lord; for I am weak: heal me, O Lord; for my bones are vexed. ³ My soul also is grievously vexed: but you, O Lord, how long? ⁴ Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: save me for your mercy's sake.

⁷ to hear the voice of praise, and to declare all your wonderful works.

¹ (39) For the end, a Song of David, to Idithun. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I set a guard on my mouth, while the sinner stood in my presence. ² I was dumb, and humbled myself, and kept silence from good [words]; and my grief was renewed. ³ My heart grew hot within me, and a fire would kindle in my meditation: I spoke with my tongue, ⁴ O Lord, make me to know mine end, and the number of my days, what it is; that I may know what I lack. ⁵ Behold, you have made my days old; and my existence [is] as nothing before you: nay, every man living [is] altogether vanity. Pause. ⁶ Surely man walks in a shadow; nay, he is disquieted in vain: he lays up treasures, and knows not for whom he shall gather them. ⁷ And now what [is] my expectation? [is it] not the Lord? and my ground [of hope] is with you. Pause. ⁸ Deliver me from all my transgressions: you have made me a reproach to the foolish.

² My mercy, and my refuge; my helper, and my deliverer; my protector, in whom I have trusted; who subdues my people under me.

⁴⁰ NUN. Our way has been searched out and examined, and we will turn to the Lord. ⁴¹ Let us lift up our hearts with [our] hand to the lofty One in heaven. ⁴² We have sinned, we have transgressed; and you have not pardoned.

¹⁶ The crown has fallen [from] our head: yes, woe to us! for we have sinned. ¹⁷ For this has grief come; our heart is sorrowful: for this our eyes are darkened.

²⁰ For the Lord will by no means reject the harmless man; but he will not receive any gift of the ungodly.

²² Therefore I said, Wrath slays the great and mighty man.

²⁴ For they are delivered into the hands of the unrighteous [man]: he covers the faces of the judges [of the earth]: but if it be not he, who is it?

¹⁵ Then shall you call, and I will listen to you: but do not you reject the work of your hands.

¹⁶ For their good things were in [their] hands, but he regards not the works of the ungodly.

¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel for the wicked is far from him.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous: the Lord has removed my judgment. ⁶ And he has erred in my judgment: my wound is severe without unrighteousness [of mine]. ⁷ What man is as Job, drinking scorning like water?

¹⁸ [He is] ungodly that says to a king, You are a transgressor, [that says] to princes, O most ungodly one. ¹⁹ [Such a one] as would not reverence the face of an honorable man, neither knows how to give honor to the great, so as that their persons should be respected.

⁷ He will not turn away his eyes from the righteous, but [they shall be] with kings on the throne: and he will establish them in triumph, and they shall be exalted. ⁸ But they that are bound in fetters shall be holden in cords of poverty. ⁹ And he shall recount to them their works, and their transgressions, for such will act with violence.

¹⁷ [there is] a deep gulf [and] a rushing stream beneath it, and your table came down full of fatness. Judgment shall not fail from the righteous; ¹⁸ but there shall be wrath upon the ungodly, by reason of the ungodliness of the bribes which they received for iniquities.

² Nay, gird up now your loins like a man; and I will ask you, and do you answer me.

⁸ And hide them together in the earth; and fill their faces with shame.

⁸ If I should go up to heaven, you are there: if I should go down to hell, you are present.

⁸ And now, O Lord, you are our Father, and we are clay, all [of us] the work of your hands.

¹ Righteous are you, O Lord, that I may make my defence to you, yes, I will speak to you [of] judgments. Why [is it] that the way of ungodly [men] prospers? [that] all that deal very treacherously are flourishing? ² You have planted them, and they have taken root; they have begotten children, and become fruitful; you are near to their mouth, and far from their reins. ³ But you, Lord, know me; you have proved my heart before you; purify them for the day of their slaughter.

² He has taken me, and led me away into darkness, and not [into] light. ³ Nay, against me has he turned his hand all the day. ⁴ He has made old my flesh and my skin; he has broken my bones. ⁵ BETH. He has built against me, and compassed my head, and brought travail [upon me]. ⁶ He has set me in dark places, as them that have long been dead. ⁷ He has builded against me, and I can’t come forth: he has made my brazen [chain] heavy. ⁸ GIMEL. Yes, [though] I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayer. ⁹ DALETH. He has built up my ways, he has hedged my paths; ¹⁰ he has troubled me, [as] a she-bear lying in wait: he is to me [as] a lion in secret places. ¹¹ He pursued [me] after I departed, and brought me to a stand: he has utterly ruined me. ¹² HE. He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins. ¹⁴ I became a laughing stock to all my people; and their song all the day. ¹⁵ VAU. He has filled me with bitterness, he has drenched me with gall. ¹⁶ And he has dashed out my teeth with gravel, he has fed me with ashes. ¹⁷ He has also removed my soul from peace: I forgot prosperity. ¹⁸ Therefore my success has perished, and my hope from the Lord.

⁷ But the Lord said to Samuel, Look not on his appearance, nor on his stature, for I have rejected him; for God sees not as man looks; for man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.

³² For you are not man like me, with whom I could contend, that we might come together to judgment.

²⁶ Behold, the Mighty One is great, and we shall not know [him]: the number of his years is even infinite.

² He shall say to the Lord, You are my helper and my refuge: my God; I will hope in him. ³ For he shall deliver you from the snare of the hunters, from [every] troublesome matter. ⁴ He shall overshadow you with his shoulders, and you shall trust under his wings: his truth shall cover you with a shield.

¹² As far as the east is from the west, [so far] has he removed our transgressions from us.

¹⁴ And if I should sin, you watch me; and you have not cleared me from iniquity. ¹⁵ Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me: and if I should be righteous, I can’t lift myself up, for I am full of dishonor. ¹⁶ For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again you have changed and are terribly destroying me; ¹⁷ renewing against me my torture: and you have dealt with me in great anger, and you have brought trials upon me.

¹⁶ But you have numbered my devices: and not one of my sins shall escape you?

³⁴ and in your hands has been found the blood of innocent souls; I have not found them in holes, but on every oak.

¹² And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] I will search Jerusalem with a candle, and will take vengeance on the men that despise the things committed to them; but they say in their hearts, The Lord will not do any good, neither will he do any evil.

³⁹ Behold, behold that I am [he], and there is no god beside me: I kill, and I will make to live: I will strike, and I will heal; and there is none who shall deliver out of my hands.

¹⁰ For he knows already my way; and he has tried me as gold.

¹³ And if too he has thus judged, who is he that has contradicted, for he has both willed [a thing] and done it.

⁶ (for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence:)

¹⁴ what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer?

³⁵ (Oh that I had a hearer,) and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and [as to] the written charge which I had against any one,

⁷ And it came to pass after the Lord had spoken all these words to Job, [that] the Lord said to Eliphaz the Thaemanite, You have sinned, and your two friends: for you⌃ have not said anything true before me, as my servant Job [has].

⁶ For the Lord knows the way of the righteous; but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

³ O Lord my God, if I have done this; (if there is unrighteousness in my hands;)

⁸ The Lord shall judge the nations: judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to my innocence that is in me. ⁹ Oh let the wickedness of sinners come to an end; and [then] you shall direct the righteous, O God that search the hearts and reins.

³ I will call upon the Lord with praises, and I shall be saved from mine enemies.

¹ (27) [A Psalm] of David, before he was anointed. The Lord is my light and my Saviour; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the defender of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? ² When evil-doers drew near against me to eat up my flesh, my persecutors and mine enemies, they fainted and fell. ³ Though an army should set itself in array against me, my heart shall not be afraid: though war should rise up against me, in this am I confident. ⁴ One thing have I asked of the Lord, this will I earnestly seek: that I should dwell in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life, that I should behold the fair beauty of the Lord, and survey his temple. ⁵ For in the day of mine afflictions he hid me in his tabernacle: he sheltered me in the secret of his tabernacle; he set me up on a rock.

¹ (140) For the end, a Psalm of David. Rescue me, O Lord, from the evil man; deliver me from the unjust man. ² Who have devised injustice in their hearts; all the day they prepared war.

¹⁵ Now then if you⌃ be ready, whenever you⌃ shall hear the sound of the trumpet, and pipe, and harp, and sackbut, and lute, and harmony, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the golden image which I have made; [well]: but if you⌃ worship not, in the same hour you⌃ shall be cast into the burning fiery furnace; and who is the God that shall deliver you out of my hand?

¹⁰ And now I will expose her uncleanness before her lovers, and no one shall by any means deliver her out of my hand.

⁶ then God laid it to heart that he had made man upon the earth, and he pondered [it] deeply. ⁷ And God said, I will blot out man whom I have made from the face of the earth, even man with cattle, and reptiles with flying creatures of the sky, for I am grieved that I have made them.

³ Is it good before you if I be unrighteous? for you have disowned the work of your hands, and attended to the counsel of the ungodly.

⁷ [even] all who are called by my name: for I have prepared him for my glory, and I have formed him, and have made him:

³ So I went down to the potter's house, and behold, he was making a vessel on the stones. ⁴ And the vessel which he was making with his hands fell: so he made it again another vessel, as it seemed good to him to make [it]. ⁵ And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ⁶ Shall I not be able, O house of Israel, to do to you as this potter? behold, as the clay of the potter are you⌃ in my hands. ⁷ [If] I shall pronounce a decree upon a nation, or upon a kingdom, to cut them off, and to destroy [them]; ⁸ and that nation turn from all their sins, then will I repent of the evils which I purposed to do to them. ⁹ And [if] I shall pronounce a decree upon a nation and kingdom, to rebuild and to plant [it]; ¹⁰ and they do evil before me, so as not to listen to my voice, then will I repent of the good which I spoke of, to do it to them.

⁷ And God formed the man [of] dust of the earth, and breathed upon his face the breath of life, and the man became a living soul.

¹⁹ In the sweat of your face shall you eat your bread until you return to the earth out of which you were taken, for earth you are and to earth you shall return.

⁷ Remember then that my life is breath, and mine eye shall not yet again see good.

¹⁴ I have called upon death to be my father, and corruption [to be] my mother and sister.

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocency, and compass your altar, O Lord: ⁷ to hear the voice of praise, and to declare all your wonderful works.

³ For he shall deliver you from the snare of the hunters, from [every] troublesome matter.

⁴ They wandered in the wilderness in a dry land; they found no way to a city of habitation.

⁷ [before] the dust also return to the earth as it was, and the spirit return to God who gave it.

⁹ What excellent thing have I prepared as clay of the potter? Will the plowman plow the earth all day? shall the clay say to the potter, What are you doing that you do not work, nor have hands? shall the thing formed answer him that formed it?

⁶ Shall I not be able, O house of Israel, to do to you as this potter? behold, as the clay of the potter are you⌃ in my hands.

¹⁷ And the great trees make a shadow over him with their branches, and [so do] the bushes of the field. ¹⁸ If there should be a flood, he will not perceive it; he trust that Jordan will rush up into his mouth.

⁴ And he said to me, Prophesy upon these bones, and you shall say to them, You⌃ dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. ⁵ Thus says the Lord to these bones; Behold, I [will] bring upon you the breath of life: ⁶ and I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and will spread skin upon you, and will put my Spirit into you, and you⌃ shall live; and you⌃ shall know that I am the Lord. ⁷ So I prophesied as [the Lord] commanded me: and it came to pass while I was prophesying, that, behold, [there was] a shaking, and the bones approached each one to his joint. ⁸ And I looked, and behold, sinews and flesh grew upon them, and skin came upon them above: but there was not breath in them.

¹⁹ since your servant has found mercy before you, and you have magnified your righteousness, in what you do towards me that my soul may live, —but I shall not be able to escape to the mountain, lest perhaps the calamity overtake me and I die.

⁴ The Divine Spirit is that which formed me, and the breath of the Almighty that which teaches me.

⁹ When he wrought on the left hand, then I observed [it] not: his right hand shall encompass me but I shall not see [it].

¹³ And if too he has thus judged, who is he that has contradicted, for he has both willed [a thing] and done it.

⁶ For to every thing there is time and judgment; for the knowledge of a man is great to him. ⁷ For there is no one that knows what is going to be: for who shall tell him how it shall be?

⁷ I am he that prepared light, and formed darkness; who make peace, and create evil; I am the Lord God, that does all these things.

¹⁵ For you are God, yet we knew [it] not, the God of Israel, the Saviour.

⁹ and remember the former things [that were] of old: for I am God, and there is none other beside me, ¹⁰ telling beforehand the latter events before they come to pass, and they are accomplished together: and I said, all my counsel shall stand, and I will do all things that I have planned: ¹¹ calling a bird from the east, and from a land afar off, for the things which I have planned: I have spoken, and brought [him]; I have created and made [him]; I have brought him, and prospered his way.

³⁷ Who has thus spoken, and it has come to pass? the Lord has not commanded it.

⁷ and keeping justice and mercy for thousands, taking away iniquity, and unrighteousness, and sins; and he will not clear the guilty; bringing the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and to the children's children, to the third and fourth generation.

¹⁸ The Lord [is] longsuffering and merciful, and true, removing transgressions and iniquities and sins, and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the sins of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation.

²¹ Why have you not forgotten my iniquity, and purged my sin? but now I shall depart to the earth; and in the morning I am no more.

²⁸ I quake in all my limbs, for I know that you will not leave me alone [as] innocent.

²⁶ for you have written evil things against me, and you have compassed me with the sins of my youth. ²⁷ And you have placed my foot in the stocks; and you have watched all my works, and have penetrated my heels.

³ Let Israel hope in the Lord, from henceforth and for ever.

¹ (140) For the end, a Psalm of David. Rescue me, O Lord, from the evil man; deliver me from the unjust man.

⁷ And the Lord said to Moses, I have surely seen the affliction of my people that is in Egypt, and I have heard their cry [caused] by their taskmasters; for I know their affliction.

¹² If he would take away, who shall turn him back? or who shall say to him, What have you done?

¹⁵ For though I be righteous, he will not listen to me: I will entreat his judgment.

²⁰ For though I should seem righteous, my mouth will be profane: and though I should seem blameless, I shall be proved perverse. ²¹ For even if I have sinned, I know it not [in] my soul: but my life is taken away.

⁷ For you know that I have not committed iniquity: but who is he that can deliver out of your hands?

⁶ For even when I remember, I am alarmed, and pains seize my flesh.

¹⁵ Therefore am I troubled at him; and when I was reproved, I thought of him. Therefore let me take good heed before him: I will consider, and be afraid of him.

⁷ Nay rather, but let mine enemies be as the overthrow of the ungodly, and they that rise up against me, as the destruction of transgressors.

¹⁷ Let sinners be driven away into Hades, [even] all the nations that forget God.

¹¹ Woe to the transgressor! evils shall happen to him according to the works of his hands.

⁵ And I said, Woe is me, for I am pricked to the heart; for being a man, and having unclean lips, I dwell in the midst of a people having unclean lips; and I have seen with mine eyes the King, the Lord of hosts.

⁵ For [these blessings] shall happen to them that work righteousness, and they shall remember your ways: behold, you were angry and we have sinned; therefore we have erred, ⁶ and we are all become as unclean, and all our righteousness as a filthy rag: and we have fallen as leaves because of our iniquities; thus the wind shall carry us [away].

²⁰ RHECHS. Behold, O Lord; for I am afflicted: my belly is troubled, and my heart is turned within me; for I have been grievously rebellious: abroad the sword has bereaved me, even as death at home.

¹ Remember, O Lord, what has happened to us: behold, and look on our reproach. ² Our inheritance has been turned away to aliens, our houses to strangers: ³ we are become orphans, we have no father, our mothers are as widows. ⁴ We have drunk our water for money; our wood is sold to us [for a burden] on our neck: ⁵ we have been persecuted, we have laboured, we have had no rest. ⁶ Egypt gave the hand [to us], Assur to their own satisfaction. ⁷ Our fathers sinned, [and] are not: we have borne their iniquities. ⁸ Servants have ruled over us: there is none to ransom [us] out of their hand. ⁹ We shall bring in our bread with [danger of] our lives, because of the sword of the wilderness. ¹⁰ Our skin is blackened like an oven; they are convulsed, because of the storms of famine. ¹¹ They humbled the women in Sion, the virgins in the cities of Juda. ¹² Princes were hanged up by their hands: the elders were not honored. ¹³ The chosen men lifted up [the voice in] weeping, and the youths fainted under the wood. ¹⁴ And the elders ceased from the gate, the chosen men ceased from their music. ¹⁵ The joy of our heart has ceased; our dance is turned into mourning. ¹⁶ The crown has fallen [from] our head: yes, woe to us! for we have sinned. ¹⁷ For this has grief come; our heart is sorrowful: for this our eyes are darkened. ¹⁸ Over the mountain of Sion, because it is made desolate, foxes have walked therein. ¹⁹ But you, O Lord, shall dwell for ever; your throne [shall endure] to generation and generation. ²⁰ Therefore will you utterly forget us, and abandon us a long time? ²¹ Turn us, O Lord, to you, and we shall be turned; and renew our days as before. ²² For you have indeed rejected us; you have been very angry against us.

¹⁸ Then shall you⌃ return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, and between him that serves God, and him that serves [him] not.

²⁹ If these men shall die according to the death of all men, if also their visitation shall be according to the visitation of all men, then the Lord has not sent me. ³⁰ But if the Lord shall show by a wonder, and the earth shall open her mouth and swallow them up, and their houses, and their tents, and all that belongs to them, and they shall go down alive into Hades, then you⌃ shall know that these men have provoked the Lord.

⁵⁹ then the Lord shall magnify your plagues, and the plagues of your seed, great and wonderful plagues, and evil and dwelling diseases.

⁹ who does great things and untraceable, glorious things also, and marvelous, of which there is no number:

¹³ In that day I was given up as to a lion until the morning: so has he broken all my bones: for I was so given up from day [even] to night.

¹⁰ he has troubled me, [as] a she-bear lying in wait: he is to me [as] a lion in secret places.

⁷ And I will be to them as a panther, and as a leopard. ⁸ I will meet them by the way of the Assyrians, as a she-bear excited, and I will rend the caul of their heart, and the lions' whelps of the thicket shall devour them there; the wild beasts of the field shall rend them in pieces.

⁸ A lion shall roar, and who will not be alarmed? the Lord God has spoken, and who will not prophesy?

²¹ I went out full, and the Lord has brought me back empty: and why call you⌃ me Noemin, whereas the Lord has humbled me and the Mighty One has afflicted me?

⁸ But now he has made me weary, and a worn-out fool; and you have laid hold of me.

⁶ Know then that it is the Lord that has troubled [me], and has raised his bulwark against me. ⁷ Behold, I laugh at reproach; I will not speak: [or] I will cry out, but [there is] nowhere judgment. ⁸ I am fenced round about, and can by no means escape: he has set darkness before my face. ⁹ And he has stripped me of my glory, and has taken the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He has torn me around about, and I am gone: and he has cut off my hope like a tree. ¹¹ And he has dreadfully handled me in anger, and has counted me for an enemy.

¹¹ And Joanan the son of Caree, and all the leaders of the host that were with him, heard of all the evil deeds which Ismael had done.

¹⁰ because it shut not up the gates of my mother's womb, for [so] it would have removed sorrow from my eyes. ¹¹ For why died I not in the belly? and [why] did I not come forth from the womb and die immediately?

²⁰ But safety shall fail them; for their hope is destruction, and the eyes of the ungodly shall waste away.

¹⁰ But a man that has died is utterly gone; and when a mortal has fallen, he is no more.

¹⁰ Woe is me, [my] mother! you have born me as some man of strife, and at variance with the whole earth; I have not helped [others], nor has any one helped me; my strength has failed among them that curse me.

¹⁴ Cursed be the day wherein I was born: the day wherein my mother brought me forth, let it not be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought the glad tidings to my father, saying, A male child is born to you. ¹⁶ Let that man rejoice as the cities which the Lord overthrew in wrath, and repented not: let him hear crying in the morning, and loud lamentation at noon; ¹⁷ because he killed me not in the womb, and my mother became not my tomb, and her womb always great with me. ¹⁸ Why is it that I came forth of the womb to see troubles and distresses, and my days are spent in shame?

⁸ But you, Lord, will laugh them to scorn; you will utterly set at nothing all the heathen.

⁶ And my life is lighter than a word, and has perished in vain hope. ⁷ Remember then that my life is breath, and mine eye shall not yet again see good.

¹⁶ For I shall not live for ever, that I should patiently endure: depart from me, for my life [is] vain. ¹⁷ For what is man, that you have magnified him? or that you give heed to him? ¹⁸ Will you visit him till the morning, and judge him till [the time of] rest? ¹⁹ How long do you not let me alone, nor let me go, until I shall swallow down my spittle? ²⁰ If I have sinned, what shall I be able to do, O you that understand the mind of men? why have you made me as your accuser, and [why] am I a burden to you? ²¹ Why have you not forgotten my iniquity, and purged my sin? but now I shall depart to the earth; and in the morning I am no more.

⁹ (for we are of yesterday, and know nothing; for our life upon the earth is a shadow:)

²⁵ But my life is swifter than a post: [my days] have fled away, and they knew it not. ²⁶ Or again, is there a trace of [their] path [left] by ships? or is there one of the flying eagle as it seeks [its] prey?

²¹ Withhold [your] hand from me: and let not your fear terrify me.

¹ For a mortal born of a woman [is] short lived, and full of wrath.

⁵ O Lord my God, you have multiplied your wonderful works, and in your thoughts there is none who shall be likened to you: I declared and spoke [of them]: they exceeded number.

¹³ Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; O Lord, draw near to help me.

¹⁵ and wine makes glad the heart of man, to make his face cheerful with oil: and bread strengthens man's heart. ¹⁶ The trees of the plain shall be full [of sap]; [even] the cedars of Libanus which he has planted.

²³ But now it is dead, why should I fast thus? shall I be able to bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

¹⁴ For we shall surely die, and be as water poured upon the earth, which shall not be gathered up, and God shall take the life, even as he devises to thrust forth from him his outcast.

⁵ But let darkness and the shadow of death seize it; let blackness come upon it;

¹³ Now I should have lain down and been quiet, I should have slept and been at rest,

⁸ The eye of him that sees me shall not see me [again]: your eyes are upon me, and I am no more. ⁹ [I am] as a cloud that is cleared away from the sky: for if a man go down to the grave, he shall not come up again: ¹⁰ and he shall surely not return to his own house, neither shall his place know him any more.

¹⁰ But a man that has died is utterly gone; and when a mortal has fallen, he is no more. ¹¹ For the sea wastes in [length of] time, and a river fails and is dried up. ¹² And man that has lain down [in death] shall certainly not rise again till the heaven be dissolved, and they shall not awake from their sleep. ¹³ For oh that you had kept me in the grave, and had hidden me until your wrath should cease, and you should set me a time in which you would remember me! ¹⁴ For if a man should die, shall he live [again], having accomplished the days of his life? I will wait till I exist again?

²² Oh that a man might plead before the Lord, even [as] the son of man with his neighbor!

⁴ He that is innocent in his hands and pure in his heart; who has not lifted up his soul to vanity, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor.

⁶ For who in the heavens shall be compared to the Lord? and who shall be likened to the Lord among the sons of God?

¹¹ The heavens are your, and the earth is your: you have founded the world, and the fullness of it. ¹² You have created the north and the west: Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in your name.

¹¹ I said, I shall no more at all see the salvation of God in the land of the living: I shall no more at all see the salvation of Israel on the earth: I shall no more at all see man.

⁶ And they said not, Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who guided us in the wilderness, in an untried and trackless land, in a land which no man at all went through, and no man lived there?

²² Neither shall there be a place for the workers of iniquity to hide themselves.

¹⁷ And do the gates of death open to you for fear; and did the porters of hell quake when they saw you?

¹² You have created the north and the west: Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in your name.

¹⁶ Give glory to the Lord your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble on the dark mountains, and you⌃ shall wait for light, and behold the shadow of death, and they shall be brought into darkness.
