⁶ And the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, for the people were distressed. And the people hid themselves in caves, and in crevices, and in crags, and in tombs, and in cisterns.

¹⁰ And Pharaoh came near, and the sons of Israel raised their eyes, and, behold! The Egyptians were marching after them! And they were greatly afraid. And the sons of Israel cried to Jehovah. ¹¹ And they said to Moses, Were there no graves in Egypt, that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What is this you have done to us, to bring us out from Egypt? ¹² Is this not the word which we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, Go away from us, and let us serve the Egyptians. For it is better for us to serve the Egyptians, than to die in the wilderness.

²⁰ And the men of Ai looked behind them, and saw; and, behold! The smoke of the city had gone up into the sky. And there was no power in them to flee here or there. And the people who had fled to the wilderness turned back against the pursuers.

² And the hand of Midian was strong against Israel. And the sons of Israel made dens for themselves before the faces of Midian, in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

⁹ And the sons of Ammon crossed over the Jordan to fight against Judah also, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim. And Israel was greatly distressed.

⁴¹ And the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were troubled. For they had seen that evil had struck them.

¹¹ And both of them were revealed to the fort of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, See, Hebrews coming out from the holes there where they hid themselves!

¹⁹ And the men of Ziph went to Saul, to Gibeah, saying, Is not David hiding himself with us in strongholds, in the forest, in the hill of Hachilah, which is south of the wilderness?

³ And on the way he came in to the folds of the flock. And there was a cave. And Saul went in to cover his feet. And David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave.

¹⁴ And David said, Because of this I am in great distress. Let us fall now into the hand of Jehovah, for many are His mercies; and do not let me fall into the hand of man.

²² But it is a people robbed and spoiled; they shall all be snared in holes; they were hidden in prison houses. They were for spoil, and no one delivers; a prey, and no one says, Return!

²³ For I am pressed together by the two: having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better,

³⁸ of whom the world was not worthy, wandering in deserts, and mountains, and caves, and the holes of the earth.
