¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the elders, for I keep your precepts.

⁶ Then King Rehoboam consulted with the old men who had been _⌊serving_⌋* before Solomon his father when he was alive, saying, "How are you advising me _⌊to answer this people_⌋?"* ⁷ They said to him, "If you will be a servant today to this people, then you will serve them; and if you answer them and speak good words to them, they will always be your servants." ⁸ But he rejected the advice of the old men, which they gave him, and he consulted with the youngsters who had grown up with him, who were _⌊serving_⌋* before him. ⁹ He said to them, "What are you advising that we should reply to this people who spoke to me by saying, 'Lighten the yoke your father put on us.'" ¹⁰ Then the youngsters who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you shall say to this people who spoke to you: 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but you lighten it for us,' you shall say to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's loins. ¹¹ So then, my father loaded a heavy yoke on all of you, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions!'" ¹² Jeroboam and all of the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had spoken: "Return to me on the third day." ¹³ Then the king answered all the people harshly, as he had rejected the advice of the old men that they had offered. ¹⁴ He spoke to them according to the advice of the youngsters, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add onto your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions." ¹⁵ So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turning of events from Yahweh in order to fulfill his word which Yahweh had spoken through the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

¹² Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding is in length of days.

⁹ What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us? ¹⁰ Both the gray-haired and the old are among us— _⌊those older than your father_⌋.*

²⁸ And to the human beings he said, 'Look, the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding.'"

⁴ Thus Elihu had waited for Job _⌊to speak_⌋* because _⌊they were older than he_⌋.*

⁷ I thought,* 'Let days* speak, and let many years teach wisdom.' ⁸ "Truly, it is a spirit in a human being, and the breath of Shaddai teaches them. ⁹ It is not _⌊the aged_⌋* who are wise, or* it is not the elders who understand justice. ¹⁰ Therefore I say, 'Listen to me; let me also declare my knowledge myself.'

¹⁰ The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom; all who do them* have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.

⁸ How can you say, 'We are wise and the law of Yahweh is with us'? Look, surely _⌊the lying stylus of the scribes_⌋* has made it a lie. ⁹ The wise will be put to shame, they will be dismayed, and they will get taken. Look, they have rejected the word of Yahweh, and what is wisdom to them?

²⁴ "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his* good behavior his works, with the humility of wisdom.
