⁴ Do not answer a fool according to his folly lest you become like him—even you.

¹ The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed over to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, "Why did you cross over and make war against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and why did you not call us to go with you? We will burn down your house over you with fire." ² And Jephthah said to them, "I and my people were engaged in great conflict with the _⌊Ammonites_⌋;* I called you, but you did not deliver me from their hand. ³ I saw that you would not deliver us; _⌊I risked my own life_⌋,* and I crossed over to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and Yahweh gave them into my hand. Why have you come up to me this day to fight against me?" ⁴ Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead, and he made war with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead defeated Ephraim because they said, "You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh." ⁵ Then Gilead captured the fords of the Jordan from Ephraim, and whenever a fugitive of Ephraim said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead said to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" When he said, "No," ⁶ they said to him, "Please say Shibboleth," and if he said, "Sibboleth"—because he could not _⌊pronounce it_⌋* correctly—they grabbed him and executed him at the fords of Jordan. At that time forty-two thousand from Ephraim fell.

⁴¹ Suddenly, all the men of Israel were coming to the king. They said to the king, "Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen away and brought the king and his household over the Jordan, with all the men of David?" ⁴² Then all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, "Because the king is my close relative! Why are you this angry over this matter? _⌊Have we by any means eaten anything from the king? Did we take by any means anything that was not ours_⌋?"* ⁴³ Then the people of Israel answered the men of Judah and said, "I have _⌊ten times as much_⌋* in the king, moreover in David I have more than you. Why did you treat me with contempt _⌊by not giving me first chance_⌋* to bring back my king?" But the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the word of the men of Israel.

¹⁴ He spoke to them according to the advice of the youngsters, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add onto your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions."

¹⁶ When all of Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, "_⌊What share do we have in David_⌋?* There is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now look to your house, David!" Then Israel went to their* tents.

⁸ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu king of Israel, saying, "Come let us meet _⌊face-to-face_⌋."* ⁹ So Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah, saying, "The thornbush which is in Lebanon sent to the cedar which is in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son as wife,' but an animal of the field which is in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thornbush. ¹⁰ You have indeed defeated Edom and your heart is lifted up; enjoy the honor and stay home. Why should you provoke trouble so that you fall and Judah with you?"

¹⁴ Like the release of water is the beginning of strife; before it breaks out, stop the quarrel.

⁵ Answer a fool according to his folly, or else he will be wise in his own eyes.

²¹ But* they were silent and did not answer him a word, for the command of the king was, "You must not answer him."

²¹ For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his footsteps, ²² who did not commit sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth,* ²³ who when he* was reviled, did not revile in return; when* suffering, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly,

⁹ not repaying evil for evil or insult for insult, but on the other hand blessing others, because for this reason you were called, so that you could inherit a blessing.

⁹ But Michael the archangel, when he argued with the devil, disputing concerning the body of Moses, did not dare to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"
