⁴ Wealth adds many friends, but the poor will be left by his friends.

¹⁵ My companions are treacherous like a torrent-bed; like a streambed of wadis* they flow away, ¹⁶ which are growing dark because of ice upon them, it will pile up snow. ¹⁷ In time they dry up, they disappear; when it is hot, they vanish from their place. ¹⁸ The paths of their way wind around; they go up into the wasteland, and they perish. ¹⁹ The caravans of Tema looked; the traveling merchants of Sheba hope for them. ²⁰ They are disappointed, because they trusted; they came _⌊here_⌋* and they are confounded. ²¹ "For now you* have become _⌊such_⌋;* you see terrors, and you fear. ²² Is it because I have said, 'Give to me,' or,* 'Offer a bribe for me from your wealth'? ²³ or,* 'Save me from the foe's hand,' or,* 'Ransom me from the tyrants' hand'?

¹³ "He has removed my kinsfolk from me, and my acquaintances have only* turned aside from me. ¹⁴ My relatives have failed, and my close friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ The sojourners in* my house and my slave women count me as a stranger; I have become a foreigner in their eyes. ¹⁶ I call to my servant, but* he does not answer; I must _⌊personally_⌋* plead with him. ¹⁷ My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to _⌊my own family_⌋.*

¹⁵ The wealth of the rich is the city of his strength; the ruin of the poor is their poverty.

²⁰ The poor is disliked even by his neighbor, but the lovers of the rich are many.

⁶ Many will seek favor before the generous, and everyone is the friend of a man of gifts.* ⁷ All the brothers of the poor, if they hate him, how much more will his friends keep away from him. He pursues them with words, and they are gone.*

¹³ And after not many days, the younger son gathered everything and* went on a journey to a distant country, and there he squandered his wealth by* living wastefully. ¹⁴ And after* he had spent everything, there was a severe famine throughout that country, and he began to be in need. ¹⁵ And he went and* hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to tend pigs.
