My God, my God why have you forsaken me? Why are you far from helping me, far from the words of my groaning? ² O my God, I call by day and you do not answer, and by night but I have no rest.* ³ Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. ⁴ Our ancestors* trusted you; they trusted and you delivered them. ⁵ They cried to you and were saved; they trusted you and were not ashamed. ⁶ But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by humankind and despised by people. ⁷ All who see me mock me. They open wide their lips; they shake the head, saying: ⁸ "_⌊He trusts Yahweh_⌋.* Let him rescue him. Let him deliver him because he delights in him." ⁹ Yet you took me from the belly; you made me trust while on my mother's breasts. ¹⁰ On you I was cast from the womb. From my mother's belly you have been my God. ¹¹ Do not be far from me because trouble is near; because there is no helper. ¹² Many bulls have encircled me; mighty bulls of Bashan have surrounded me. ¹³ They open their mouth against me like a lion tearing and roaring. ¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it is melted _⌊within me_⌋.* ¹⁵ My strength is dry like a potsherd, and my tongue is sticking to my jaws; and you have placed me in the dust of death. ¹⁶ Because dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has encircled me. Like the lion* they are at my hands and my feet. ¹⁷ I can count all my bones; they gaze, they look at me. ¹⁸ They divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.* ¹⁹ But you, O Yahweh, do not remain distant. O my help, hasten to help me. ²⁰ Rescue my life from the sword, my only life from the power of the dogs.* ²¹ Save me from the mouth of the lion, and from the horns of the wild oxen answer me. ²² I will tell your name to my brothers; inside the assembly I will praise you. ²³ You who revere Yahweh, praise him! Glorify him, all you seed of Jacob, and be in awe of him, all you seed of Israel, ²⁴ because he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and has not hid his face from him; but he listened to him when he cried for help. ²⁵ From you is my praise. In the great assembly, I will pay my vows before those who revere him. ²⁶ The afflicted will eat and will be satisfied. Those who seek him will praise Yahweh. May your* heart live forever. ²⁷ All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to Yahweh. All the families of the nations will worship before you. ²⁸ Because the kingship belongs to Yahweh, and he rules over the nations. ²⁹ All the _⌊healthy ones_⌋* of the earth will eat and worship. Before him all of those descending into the dust will kneel, even he who cannot keep his soul alive. ³⁰ Descendants* will serve him. Regarding the Lord, it will be told to the next generation. ³¹ They will come and tell his saving* deeds to a people yet to be born, that he has done it.

Save me, O God, because waters have come up to my neck.* ² I sink in the mud of the deep, and there is no foothold. I have come to watery depths, and the torrent floods over me. ³ I am weary with my calling out; my throat is parched. My eyes are exhausted in my waiting for my God. ⁴ More numerous than the hairs of my head are those hating me without a cause. Those who are destroying me—my enemies wrongfully*— are mighty. What I did not steal, I then must restore. ⁵ O God, _⌊you yourself know_⌋* my foolishness, and my guilty deeds are not hidden from you. ⁶ Let those who wait for you not be put to shame because of me, O Lord Yahweh of hosts. Let those who seek you not be disgraced because of me, O God of Israel. ⁷ Because on account of you I have borne reproach; disgrace has covered my face. ⁸ I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother's sons, ⁹ because the zeal for your house* has consumed me, and the reproaches of those reproaching you have fallen on me. ¹⁰ When I wept in the fasting of my soul, it became reproaches for me. ¹¹ When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became for them a byword. ¹² Those sitting at the gate talk about me as also* the songs of the drunkards. ¹³ But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Yahweh, for a favorable time, O God, according to the abundance of your loyal love. Answer me with the faithfulness of your salvation. ¹⁴ Deliver me from the mud and do not let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me and from the watery depths. ¹⁵ Do not let the torrent of waters flood over me, or the deep swallow me, or the pit close its mouth over me. ¹⁶ Answer me, O Yahweh, because your loyal love is good; according to your abundant mercies, turn to me, ¹⁷ and do not hide your face from your servant. Because I am in trouble, answer me quickly. ¹⁸ Draw near to my soul; redeem it. Because of my enemies, ransom me. ¹⁹ You know my reproach, my shame and my disgrace. _⌊Fully known_⌋* to you are all my adversaries. ²⁰ Reproach has broken my heart and I am sick. And I hoped for sympathy, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. ²¹ They also gave me gall for food,* and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. ²² Let their table before them be a trap, and their times of peace a snare. ²³ Let their eyes be dark so they cannot see, and make their loins continually tremble. ²⁴ Pour out your indignation on them, and let your burning anger overtake them. ²⁵ Let their camp be desolate. Let none dwell in their tents, ²⁶ because they persecute those whom you, yourself, have struck, and they tell of the pain of those you have wounded. ²⁷ _⌊Add guilt on top of their guilt_⌋,* and do not let them _⌊be acquitted_⌋.* ²⁸ Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and let them not be recorded with the righteous. ²⁹ But as for me, though I am afflicted and pained, your salvation will protect* me, O God. ³⁰ I will praise the name of God in song, and magnify him with thanksgiving. ³¹ For Yahweh it will be better than an ox or bull, horned and hoofed.* ³² The afflicted will see and rejoice. O God seekers, let your heart revive,* ³³ because Yahweh hears the needy and does not despise his own who are prisoners. ³⁴ Let heavens and earth praise him, the seas and all that moves in them, ³⁵ because God will save Zion and build the cities of Judah, that they may dwell there and possess it. ³⁶ And the offspring of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will abide in it.

¹ Who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed? ² For* he went* up like a shoot before him, and like a root from dry ground. He had no form and no majesty that* we should see him, and no appearance that* we should take pleasure in him. ³ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering, and acquainted with* sickness, and like _⌊one from whom others hide their faces_⌋,* he was despised, and we did not hold him in high regard. ⁴ However, he was the one who lifted up our sicknesses, and he carried our pain, yet* we ourselves assumed him stricken, struck down by God and afflicted. ⁵ But* he was pierced* because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; the chastisement for* our peace* was upon him, and by his wounds* _⌊we were healed_⌋.* ⁶ All of us have wandered about like sheep; we each have turned to his own way; and Yahweh let fall on him the iniquity of us all. ⁷ He was oppressed and afflicted, yet* he did not open his mouth; he was brought like a lamb to the slaughter, and like a sheep is dumb before its shearers, so* he did not open his mouth. ⁸ He was taken by restraint of justice, and who concerned himself with his generation? For he was cut off from the land of the living; he received a blow because of the transgression of my people. ⁹ He made* his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. ¹⁰ Yet* Yahweh was pleased to crush him; he _⌊made him sick_⌋.* If she* places* his life a guilt offering,* he will see offspring. He will prolong days, and the will of Yahweh will succeed in his hand. ¹¹ From the trouble of his life* he will see;* he will be satisfied. In his knowledge, the righteous one, my servant, shall declare many righteous,* and he is the one who will bear their iniquities. ¹² Therefore, I will divide to him a portion among the many,* and with the strong ones he will divide bounty, _⌊because_⌋* he poured his life out to death and was counted with the transgressors; and* he was the one who bore the sin of many and will intercede for the transgressors.

⁷ "O sword, awake against my shepherd, against the man who is my associate," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh of hosts. "Strike the shepherd, so that the sheep* may be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the small ones.

⁷ saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of men who are sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise?"

⁴⁴ And he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I* was still with you, that everything that is written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled."

⁴⁶ and said to them, "Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day,

³ explaining and demonstrating that it was necessary for the Christ* to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ."*

³ For I passed on to you _⌊as of first importance_⌋* what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, ⁴ and that he was buried, and that he was raised up on the third day according to the scriptures,

⁸ you subjected all things under his feet.*
For in subjecting all things,* he left nothing that was not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him, ⁹ but we see Jesus, for a short time made lower than the angels, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that apart from God* he might taste death on behalf of everyone. ¹⁰ For it was fitting for him for whom are all things and through whom are all things in bringing many sons to glory to perfect the originator of their salvation through sufferings.

²² Indeed, nearly everything is purified with blood according to the law, and apart from the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. ²³ Therefore it was necessary for the sketches of the things in heaven to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves to be purified with better sacrifices than these.

² fixing our eyes on Jesus, the originator and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

¹¹ investigating for what person or which time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he* testified beforehand to the sufferings with reference to Christ and the glories after these things,
