⁶³ And the men who were guarding him began to mock* him while* they beat him,*

⁹ His wrath has torn, and he has been hostile toward me; he gnashed at me with his teeth. My foe sharpens his eyes against me. ¹⁰ They gaped at me with their mouth; they struck my cheeks with disgrace; they have massed themselves together against me.

⁹ "But now I am their mocking song, and I have become a byword for them. ¹⁰ They abhor me; they keep aloof from me, and they do not withhold spit from my face ¹¹ because he has loosened his bowstring and humbled me, and they have thrown off restraint _⌊in my presence_⌋.* ¹² On the right hand the brood rises* up; _⌊they put me to flight_⌋,* and they build up their _⌊siege ramps_⌋* against me. ¹³ They destroy my path; they promote my destruction; they have no helper. ¹⁴ As through a wide breach they come; amid a crash they rush on.

⁶ But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by humankind and despised by people. ⁷ All who see me mock me. They open wide their lips; they shake the head, saying:

¹³ They open their mouth against me like a lion tearing and roaring.

¹⁵ But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered together; smiters whom I did not know gathered against me. They tore and did not cease. ¹⁶ Among the ungodly of the mockers at feasts,* they gnashed at me with their teeth.

²⁵ Do not let them say in their hearts,* "Aha, our desire." Let them not say, "We have swallowed him up."

⁷ Because on account of you I have borne reproach; disgrace has covered my face. ⁸ I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother's sons, ⁹ because the zeal for your house* has consumed me, and the reproaches of those reproaching you have fallen on me. ¹⁰ When I wept in the fasting of my soul, it became reproaches for me. ¹¹ When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became for them a byword. ¹² Those sitting at the gate talk about me as also* the songs of the drunkards.

⁷ Thus says Yahweh, the redeemer of Israel, his holy one,
to the one who despises* life, to the one who abhors the nation, to the slave of rulers: "Kings shall see and stand up; princes, and they shall bow down, for the sake of Yahweh, who is faithful, the holy one of Israel, and he has chosen you."

⁶ I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out my _⌊beard_⌋;* I did not hide my face from insults and spittle. ⁷ And the Lord Yahweh helps me,
therefore I have not been put to shame; therefore I have set my face like flint. And I know that I shall not be ashamed;

¹⁴ Just as many were appalled at you— such was his appearance beyond human disfigurement, and his form beyond the sons of mankind—

³ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering, and acquainted with* sickness, and like _⌊one from whom others hide their faces_⌋,* he was despised, and we did not hold him in high regard.

¹ * Now muster troops, O daughter of troops; a siege he puts against us. They strike the ruler of Israel with a rod on the cheek.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order that they could put him to death. ⁶⁰ And they did not find it,* although* many false witnesses came forward. And finally two came forward ⁶¹ and* said, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it* within three days.'" ⁶² And the high priest stood up and* said to him, "Do you reply nothing? What are these people testifying against you?" ⁶³ But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, "I put you under oath by the living God, that you tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God!" ⁶⁴ Jesus said to him, "You have said it.* But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power* and coming on the clouds of heaven." ⁶⁵ Then the high priest tore his robes, saying, "He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have just now heard the blasphemy! ⁶⁶ What do you think?" And they answered and* said, "_⌊He deserves death_⌋!"* ⁶⁷ Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists, and they slapped him,* ⁶⁸ saying, "Prophesy for us, you Christ! Who is it who hit you?"

²⁸ And they stripped him and* put a scarlet military cloak around him, ²⁹ and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it* on his head, and put* a reed in his right hand. And kneeling down before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" ³⁰ And they spat on him and* took the reed and repeatedly struck* him* on his head. ³¹ And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the military cloak and put his own clothes on him, and led him away in order to crucify him.*

³⁹ And those who passed by reviled him, shaking their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, "The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it* in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!" ⁴¹ In the same way also the chief priests, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking him,* saying, ⁴² "He saved others; he is not able to save himself! He is the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him! ⁴³ He trusts in God; let him deliver him now if he wants to,* because he said, 'I am the Son of God'!" ⁴⁴ And in the same way even the robbers who were crucified with him were reviling him.

⁵⁵ Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, and they did not find it.* ⁵⁶ For many gave false testimony against him, and their* testimony was not consistent. ⁵⁷ And some stood up and* began to give false testimony* against him, saying, ⁵⁸ "We heard him saying, 'I will destroy this temple made by hands, and within three days I will build another not made by hands." ⁵⁹ And their testimony was not even consistent about this. ⁶⁰ And the high priest stood up in the midst of them and* asked Jesus, saying, "Do you not reply anything? What are these people testifying against you?" ⁶¹ But he was silent and did not reply anything. Again the high priest asked him and said to him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" ⁶² And Jesus said, "I am, and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power* and coming with the clouds of heaven." ⁶³ And the high priest tore his clothes and* said, "What further need do we have of witnesses? ⁶⁴ You have heard the blasphemy! What _⌊do you think_⌋?"* And they all condemned him _⌊as deserving death_⌋.* ⁶⁵ And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him with their fists, and to say to him "Prophesy!" And the officers received him with slaps in the face.*

¹⁶ So the soldiers led him away into the palace (that is, the governor's residence) and called together the whole cohort. ¹⁷ And they put a purple cloak on him, and after* weaving a crown of thorns they placed it* on him. ¹⁸ And they began to greet him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" ¹⁹ And they repeatedly struck* him on the head with a reed, and were spitting on him, and _⌊they knelt down_⌋* and* did obeisance to him. ²⁰ And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes* on him, and they led him out so that they could crucify him.

²⁷ And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.*

²⁹ And those who passed by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it* in three days, ³⁰ save yourself by* coming down from the cross!" ³¹ In the same way also the chief priests, along with the scribes, were mocking him* to one another, saying, "He saved others; he is not able to save himself! ³² Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe! Even those who were crucified with him were reviling him.

²² Now when* he had said these things, one of the officers who was standing by gave a slap in the face to Jesus, saying, "Do you reply to the high priest in this way?"

² fixing our eyes on Jesus, the originator and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

²³ who when he* was reviled, did not revile in return; when* suffering, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly,
