¹ And Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying, ² "Speak to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* saying, 'Appoint for yourselves cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through the hand of Moses. ³ Anyone who kills a person by accident or unintentionally* may flee there; they will be for yourselves a refuge from the avenger of blood. ⁴ The killer will flee to one of these cities, stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and _⌊state his case to the elders of that city_⌋;* and they will take him* into the city and give him a place, and he will dwell among them. ⁵ And if the avenger of blood pursues after him, they will not hand over the killer into his hand, because he killed his neighbor unintentionally, and _⌊he did not hate him previously_⌋.* ⁶ The killer will stay in that city until he stands before the congregation for the trial, until the death of the one who is the high priest in those days. Then _⌊the killer will return_⌋* to his city and to his house, to the city from which he fled.'" ⁷ So _⌊they set apart_⌋* Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba* (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah. ⁸ Beyond the Jordan east of Jericho, they appointed Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau, from the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead, from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in the Bashan, from the tribe of Manasseh. ⁹ These were the cities designated for all the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and for the foreigners* dwelling among them, for anyone that kills a person unintentionally to flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, _⌊until there is a trial_⌋* before the congregation.

¹⁴ And he said, "Neither. I have come now as the commander of Yahweh's army." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and _⌊he bowed down_⌋* and said to him, "What is my lord commanding his servant?"

² And Yahweh said to Joshua, "Look, I am giving Jericho into your hand, its king and the soldiers of the army.

¹⁰ And Yahweh said to Joshua, "Stand up! _⌊Why_⌋* have you fallen on your face?

¹ Now Joshua was old and _⌊advanced in years_⌋,* and Yahweh said to him, "You are old and _⌊advanced in years_⌋,* and very much of the land remains to be possessed. ² This is the remaining land: all the regions of the Philistines, and all of the Geshurites,* ³ from the Shihor, which is _⌊east of Egypt_⌋,* up to the border of Ekron to the north, which is reckoned as Canaanite; there are five Philistine rulers: the Gazites,* Ashdodites,* Ashkelonites,* Gittites,* Ekronites,* and the Avvim. ⁴ In the south; all the land of the Canaanites,* and Mearah, which belongs to the Sidonians up to Aphek, to the border of the Amorites,* ⁵ and the land of the Gebalites, and all the Lebanon,* _⌊toward the east_⌋,* from Baal Gad _⌊at the foot of_⌋* Mount Hermon up to Lebo-Hamath; ⁶ all the inhabitants of the hill country, from the Lebanon* up to Misrephoth Maim, and all the Sidonians. I will drive them out from before the _⌊Israelites_⌋;* only allocate it to Israel as an inheritance just as I have commanded you. ⁷ Therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh."

¹³ But if he did not lie in wait _⌊and it was an accident_⌋,* I will appoint for you a place to which he may flee. ¹⁴ But if a man schemes against his neighbor to kill him by treachery,* you will take him from my altar to die.

⁶ "All the cities that you will give the Levites will be six cities of refuge, to which the killer can flee; in addition to them you will give forty-two cities.

¹¹ you will select for yourselves cities for your cities of refuge, that a killer who has killed a person unintentionally can flee there. ¹² The cities will be to you a refuge from a redeemer, so that the killer will not die until he stands before the community for judgment. ¹³ The cities that you are to give will be your six cities of refuge. ¹⁴ You will give three cities across the Jordan and three cities in the land of Canaan; they will be cities of refuge. ¹⁵ To the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* to the alien, and to the temporary resident in their midst there will be these six cities as a refuge to which anyone who unintentionally kills a person may flee. ¹⁶ " 'But if he hit him with an object of iron, so that he dies, the killer must surely be put to death. ¹⁷ And if he hit him with a stone in the hand, by which he will die, and he does die, he is a killer; the killer must surely be put to death. ¹⁸ Or if he hit him with a wooden object, by which he will die, and he does die, he is a killer; the killer must surely be put to death. ¹⁹ The blood avenger himself will put the killer to death; he must put him to death when meeting him. ²⁰ If he shoves him in hatred, or he throws something at him with intention, and he dies, ²¹ or if he hits him in hostility with his hand, and he dies, the one that struck him will put to death the killer when meeting him. ²² " 'Or if in an instant he shoved him, not in hostility, or threw something at him without intention, ²³ or with any stone, without seeing it dropped on him so that he dies, while he was not seeking his injury, ²⁴ then the community will judge between the striker and between the blood avenger according to these ordinances.

⁴¹ Then Moses set apart three cities _⌊on the other side of the Jordan_⌋,* _⌊toward the east_⌋,* ⁴² in order for _⌊a manslayer_⌋* to flee there who has killed his neighbor _⌊without intent_⌋* and was not hating him _⌊previously_⌋,* and so he could flee to one of these cities _⌊and be safe_⌋.* ⁴³ He set apart Bezer in the wilderness* in the land of the plateau of the Reubenites;* Ramoth in Gilead of the Gadites,* and Golan in Bashan of the Manassites.*

² you shall set apart three cities for you in the midst of your land that Yahweh your God is giving to you to take possession of it. ³ You shall prepare the roads* for yourselves, and you shall divide the regions of your land into thirds that Yahweh your God gives you as a possession, so that _⌊it will be available for any manslayer to flee there_⌋.* ⁴ "Now this is the case of the manslayer who may flee there and live there who has killed his neighbor _⌊unintentionally_⌋,* and he did not hate him _⌊previously_⌋.* ⁵ _⌊For example_⌋,* when somebody goes with his neighbor into the forest to cut wood, and the iron head slips from the handle of the tool and strikes his neighbor and he dies, then he may flee to one of these cities, and so he may live. ⁶ He does this lest the avenger of blood might pursue after the killer, because _⌊he is hot with anger_⌋* and he overtakes him, because it is a long distance to the city of refuge, and so _⌊he kills him_⌋,* but _⌊he did not deserve a death sentence_⌋,* because he was not hating him _⌊before_⌋.* ⁷ Therefore I am commanding you, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'You shall set apart three cities.' ⁸ Then if Yahweh your God enlarges your territory just as he swore to your ancestors* and gives* to you all the land that he _⌊promised_⌋* to give to your ancestors,* ⁹ then _⌊if you diligently observe this entire commandment_⌋* that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋* by loving Yahweh your God and by going* in his ways _⌊at all times_⌋,* then you shall add three more cities for yourselves to these three. ¹⁰ Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed* in the midst of your land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance and thereby bloodguilt would be on you.* ¹¹ But if someone hates* his neighbor and lies in wait for him and rises up* against him _⌊and murders him_⌋,* and the murderer flees to one of these cities, ¹² then the elders of his city shall send and take him from there, and they shall give him into the hand of the avenger of blood, and he shall be put to death. ¹³ Your eye shall not take pity on him, and you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, _⌊so that good will be directed toward you_⌋.*

¹ Consequently, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

³³ Who will bring charges against God's elect? God is the one who justifies. ³⁴ Who is the one who condemns? Christ* is the one who died, and more than that, who was raised, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

¹⁸ in order that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge may have powerful encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us, ¹⁹ which we have like an anchor of the soul, both firm and steadfast, and entering into the inside of the curtain,

¹ And Boaz had gone up to the city gate and sat there. And look, the redeemer of whom Boaz had spoken was passing by. And he said, "Come over here to sit, _⌊friend_⌋."* And he came over and sat. ² And he took ten men from the elders of the city and said, "Sit here." And they sat.

⁴ His children are far from deliverance, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer—

⁷ "At my going out the gate to the city, I secured my seat in the square.

⁹ Do not destroy me* with the sinners, nor my life with men of bloodshed,

⁷ When Ebed-melech the Cushite, _⌊a eunuch_⌋* who was in the house of the king, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the pit*—now the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin—

⁶ Then the king of Israel assembled the prophets, about four hundred men, and he said to them, "Shall I go against Ramoth-Gilead for the battle, or should I refrain?" Then they said, "Go up, for the Lord will give it into the hand of the king."

⁷⁸ And beyond the Jordan at Jericho, on the east side of the Jordan, out of the tribe of Reuben: Bezer in the wilderness with its pasturelands, Jahzah with its pasturelands,
