⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* lived in the midst of the Canaanites,* the Hittites,* the Amorites,* the Perizzites,* the Hivites,* and the Jebusites.*

¹ All the _⌊Israelites_⌋* went out, from Dan to Beersheba, including the land of Gilead, and they gathered as one body* to Yahweh at Mizpah.

⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said, "Who in the assembly has not come up from all the tribes of Israel to Yahweh?" For a solemn oath was taken concerning whoever did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah, saying, "He will certainly be put to death."

⁸ They asked, "Which one is there from the tribes of Israel who did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah?" And behold, no one came from Jabesh-gilead to the camp, to the assembly.

⁵ Then Samuel said, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to Yahweh for you." ⁶ So they gathered to Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before Yahweh. They fasted on that day and said there, "We have sinned against Yahweh!" So Samuel judged the _⌊Israelites_⌋* at Mizpah. ⁷ Now when the Philistines heard that the _⌊Israelites_⌋* had gathered at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the _⌊Israelites_⌋* heard of it, _⌊they were afraid of the Philistines_⌋.*

¹⁷ Then Samuel summoned the people to Yahweh at Mizpah,

¹⁶ When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, Yahweh regretted about the evil, and he said to the angel who brought destruction among the people, "Enough, now relax your hand." Now the angel of Yahweh was at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

³ Then Ishmael killed all the Judeans who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, _⌊along with_⌋* the Chaldeans who were found there, _⌊the soldiers_⌋.*

¹⁴ So all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and returned and went to Johanan the son of Kareah.
